I love how the ballad tone shifts with him. When Tracy Chapman sang it it made it sound like someone with a toxic partner and they want better things in life. However, when Luke sings it, from his perspective, you can hear it as a boy who has an alcoholic father and he dropped out of school to be with him and the dad just drinks all day instead of getting better so he wants a fast car to leave. Like take this verse: "You got a fast car I got a job that pays all our bills You stay out drinking late at the bar See more of your friends than you do of your kids I'd always hoped for better Thought maybe together you and me'd find it I got no plans, I ain't going nowhere Take your fast car and keep on driving" In Tracy's version is her partner who drinks all day and doesn't even see his kids. In Luke's version I hear a son trying to live with his dad after dropping out, working, and the dad just keeps drinking and not changing and doesn't even spend time with him, and he's losing any hope he had left.
Sorry, great song (thanks Tracy!), but Luke’s version could be by anyone singing at an open mic. Nothing special. I suggest to go listen to the original AND listen to her Gimme One Reason song.

Both "Fast Car" and "Luka" were poignant sad songs that became huge hits for both ladies! There were such an amazing amount of music and movies that came out during the 1980s which influenced all genres of music and movies since then!
