Easy Steps. To my friends at easy steps. I did my job yesterday and i followed your method. Very happy results; thank you. I have 3 busted shocks in my garage and i waned to cover a few things. If you are buying air shocks from a auto salvage yard, which i sometimes do. Make sure the bottom of the shock is not loose. nothing good will happen if the shock is sloppy in fit below before installation. Once you have installed the shock always remember to keep the right front wheel on asphalt. if you pull of the highway [ road ] on the shoulder pick your spots. In the Mercedes [ CLS S500 E500 and others ] the lower control arm are a bear claw knuckle [ very strong ] but if the bushings are worn a lot of lateral force will be exerted on the base of the shock and that can cause ruptures and / or leaks; i also have to admit that i blew mine out going over a crappy railroad crossing at too high a speed. thank you for shearing.

Did this job last night and it took me about 3.5 hours going slow to do it. A couple of tips, I had to smack the upper ball joint very hard 4-5x with a heavy hammer to pop that ball joint out. Also, had a tough time getting the bottom screw back in through the hole of the replacement shock. Had to use a wedge to keep the lower control arm down a bit and really lean hard down on the caliper to line up the hole so the screw would slide in. Probably the hardest part of the job was that. All is good now, thanks a bunch for the video. It was super helpful!!
Great video that gave me the confidence to tackle my W211 wagon front left strut. I just want to add a few notes on top of this. 1) This job took me 3.5 hours with the help of one other person. It may only take an hour for a good backyard mech but for us norms, block off the morning 2) The hammer trick on the ball joint did not work for me. Have a ball joint popper available 3) The dead front strut did not wiggle out as easily as shown here. Maybe it's the W211 chassis vs the W219. Either way, I got around this by compressing the strut with a ratchet strap and then pulling it out 4) Since the replacement comes fully pressurized, you won't be able to reverse the process without deflating it. To do this I got two of the top bolts in and then hooked up the top electrical connection. From there I turned the car on and lifted/lowered the car 10 or so times. You'll hear the air releasing and the bellow will get soft. From there I undid the nuts, compressed with the ratchet strap and then put it back in Thanks again for putting this up. Hopefully my notes help the next person to tackle their dead airstrut

I am thirty minutes away from replacing the air suspension on my cls55 with coil overs and it was great to be able to see you do this for some peace of mind. Congrats and keep up the great videos!! I have a 2006 CLS500. You used an Arnot shock in this video. Why Arnot? Do you know anything about the Dorman brand of shock which is quite a bit less expensive?
Torque specs: - Top mounting nuts: 30 Nm - Air pressure line: 2 Nm - Upper control arm: (stage 1) 20 Nm then (stage 2) 90 degrees - Strut to spring control arm: 165 Nm

@@EasySteps_Sidhu I believe the spring control arm has to be tightened to specifications when the car is on the ground. If doing this DIY you want an alignment after the job, you can ask them to loosen and re-tighten the bolt as needed. I am getting ready to do this job this weekend on my E63 wagon. You indicate a mix of metric and imperial units. I would assume that it would be all metric. Is the 13/16 spring control arm really 20 mm?

Brilliant video thank you so much. The tutorial gave me the confidence to tackle the job myself. I bought two airstruts for about $1000 and installed myself (Arnot Remanufactured with Lifetime warranty). The quote at Merchants Tire and Auto was $2500 (for the same struts). I had to chuckle a bit when you said the whole process took about an hour. At least not for me.. Just getting off the locking nut from the upper control arm took a while to figure out, and I ended up buying a special tool, no big deal. Also I noticed that used a 17mm socket, but the locking nut on my vehicle was about a SAE 5/8". Perhaps my w219 is a bit different (cls500, 2006, non-amg)? I also couldn't get the suspension to level until after I raised the vehicle (with the button) and let it go back down again. But finally the car leveled which brought Please consider making a video for the rear air struts!! It's not clear whether or not the rear need STAR reprogramming to level, which would make it a PITA for a DIY..
Great video!! Not sure if you stated this, but the new strut comes under pressure. In order to release the air disconnect the negative connection on your battery and place the new strut in your engine compartment. Connect the electrical connection. Now reconnect and disconnect your battery connection about 16 times. You will will hear the air releasing from the strut. This will allow you to use the crowbar to compress the strut enough to slide it into place over the control arm. I used a small 18 inch crowbar, which worked perfectly. I did both both pair of my front struts.
Very helpful video. Airmatic is a beautiful system. With ABC [ active body control ] you have the advantage of fluid leaks [ PENTOSIN ] indicating the failed components but with air leaks it is not so evident; and one leaking strut can cause a variation of symptoms, sometimes its better to change both fronts at the same time. the rear suspension has a much longer service life.

Replaced mine today. Ball joint had me stumped. Video helped and car is good. HOWEVER...I should read about installing the new air line. TIP: Remove old fitting from air line leaving new fitting in NEW strut and just push line in.

A couple of things: 1- New or used struts are under pressure, you cannot install them easily unless you release the pressure (connect the top plug lock and unlock car a few times OR use 9v battery and supply that to the top connector. 2- Raising both sides of the car makes it easy to uninstall the old strut you wont have to push the whole wheel hub down 3- Tightening the ball joint of upper control arm, you need to hold the bolt while you tighten the nut (there is a hole in it for hex bit)
Hey man great video. I had a few questions I would like to ask you in regards to my 2012 CLS 550. I was told I need to replace the left and right rear air suspension strut. This part is said to be covered under my CPO extended warranty. However, I am being told that it isn’t covered bc it’s not a part not in fact covered. Am I being given the run around or could this be true? Not sure how many parts go in to the suspension. Thought it was the actual air bag and strut. Could use your expertise. Thanks.
21DannyC lol wow I just had mine done , last week. 2k parts & labor for 2012 cls550, both bags. Have noticed alittle sagging still, not much though. Was told to too winter cold temps. ??
Yes, please disconnect the negative terminal. The strut, please do exactly as I have shown in the video press the rotor assembly down and then it will fit easily. I hope it helps, thanks for watching. Good luck with your DIY project.

Wow, I did it! And I thank you, Sidhu for your great video showing concise step by step instructions, giving me the confidence I needed. You can imagine my trepidation to do a job like this on my 2008 CLS 550, that I bought new and paid cash for. Especially since I paid my dealer $2,000 to change the other shock a few years ago. This time it was just the cost of the part (and a few Tylenol for my aching muscles). The steps were as straightforward as you said. Great job!

Another way to separate the ball joint is to rent a hinged ball joint separation tool at Auto Zone, and use it to separate the ball joint without damaging the rubber boot. If you don't remove the loosened nut, the suspension won't fly apart when the ball joint separates. If you return the tool within the time limit, you get your money back!
how much of a space is there supposed to be between the control arm and tire? my sister has a cls 550 and says it's normal to be slightly rubbing the tire
I have a 2009 Cls 550 recently the battery died due to the lights been left on over night. I got the car started but now I have a suspension malfunction light on the dash. And the car is sitting low in the front. Do I need to replace the suspension now?
Hi Chris, it can be three things. First, did your cls550 used to sit low in the front before the battery issue? If so, then yes you definitely have a bad suspension bag. Two, if it did not use to fall down before, then possibly your ride height sensor has gone bad (these control the height of the suspension) and when the car falls down, sometimes these go bad. Three, it can be that your battery has drained and is not at full capacity anymore, Mercedes are very sensitive to battery voltages and need the most optimal voltage to run correctly.

Hi, I have couple of questions with regards to the process. 1. Did you have to disconnect the battery before starting the replacement? 2. With the Arnott strut, as I understand it is already pressurized, did that cause a problem when fitting in? I read some forums where they said to decompress the strut and take the air out (using 5v batteries connected to the upper connection points of the strut) - did you need to do any of that? 3. Once installed did you need to use a STAR system in order for the car to align itself with the correct pressure on all 4 tires? I am planning to do my replacement tomorrow so if you could respond at the earliest I would appreciate it (this is for a W211 E55)

So you’re telling me that the cls Amg doesn’t have active body control ? I thought the cls would have the abc system . I wish my s55 have the airmatic instead of the abc .
As far a i know [ ABC ] Active body control is a trade name that Mercedes Benz has used for the fluid operated suspension installed in several of their models. sometimes older models [ versions ] of the same car example S55 had ABC

My favorite video yet, my only question is, did you have to depressurize the system before taking out the strut and before installing the new one?

After you install another strut do you need any kind of programming so it makes the psi as on the other struts?
No, there is a level sensor that takes care of adjusting the height.

Yes, please disconnect the negative terminal.
The strut, please do exactly as I have shown in the video press the rotor assembly down and then it will fit easily.

You can imagine my trepidation to do a job like this on my 2008 CLS 550, that I bought new and paid cash for. Especially since I paid my dealer $2,000 to change the other shock a few years ago. This time it was just the cost of the part (and a few Tylenol for my aching muscles). The steps were as straightforward as you said. Great job!

Kindly advise if there is enough space to use a air tool to undo the bolt & nut off the control arm!! It can be quite stubborn.
I had no luck hammering the ball joint to free it. Bought the separator tool, but placed it correctly as to not damage the ball joint rubber.

When you do this, do you unplug the electrical on the brakes as well? So as to not tear Those lines?
Not Needed!! since there is enough room and line length to do the repair comfortably.
Another way to separate the ball joint is to rent a hinged ball joint separation tool at Auto Zone, and use it to separate the ball joint without damaging the rubber boot. If you don't remove the loosened nut, the suspension won't fly apart when the ball joint separates. If you return the tool within the time limit, you get your money back!

how much of a space is there supposed to be between the control arm and tire? my sister has a cls 550 and says it's normal to be slightly rubbing the tire

I have a 2009 Cls 550 recently the battery died due to the lights been left on over night. I got the car started but now I have a suspension malfunction light on the dash. And the car is sitting low in the front. Do I need to replace the suspension now?
Hi Chris, it can be three things. First, did your cls550 used to sit low in the front before the battery issue? If so, then yes you definitely have a bad suspension bag. Two, if it did not use to fall down before, then possibly your ride height sensor has gone bad (these control the height of the suspension) and when the car falls down, sometimes these go bad. Three, it can be that your battery has drained and is not at full capacity anymore, Mercedes are very sensitive to battery voltages and need the most optimal voltage to run correctly.

You didnt have to disconnect the air compressor relay or deactivate it?
Hi,
I have couple of questions with regards to the process.
1. Did you have to disconnect the battery before starting the replacement?
2. With the Arnott strut, as I understand it is already pressurized, did that cause a problem when fitting in? I read some forums where they said to decompress the strut and take the air out (using 5v batteries connected to the upper connection points of the strut) - did you need to do any of that?
3. Once installed did you need to use a STAR system in order for the car to align itself with the correct pressure on all 4 tires?
I am planning to do my replacement tomorrow so if you could respond at the earliest I would appreciate it (this is for a W211 E55)

So you’re telling me that the cls Amg doesn’t have active body control ? I thought the cls would have the abc system . I wish my s55 have the airmatic instead of the abc .
As far a i know [ ABC ] Active body control is a trade name that Mercedes Benz has used for the fluid operated suspension installed in several of their models. sometimes older models [ versions ] of the same car example S55 had ABC

Doesn’t work on cls55. The sway bar has to be disconnected from the control arm.
No it doesn’t, just disconnect the ball joint first before doing the strut bolt and it will drop enough to access the strut bolt.
