  • Welcome to this video update of all the new and exciting things in the blacksmith shop. I’m very thankful for how far this new shop has come. Praise God for his kindness in providing for me a shop that is functional and nice to work in with lots of space.
Speaking of space, one thing that I forgot to mention in the tour is that since the last video a partition wall has been put up in the shop. I’m referring to the tin-clad wall nearest the truck and the tractor. The total square footage of the building I am in is 5400 ft.². The partition wall brings the blacksmith shop portion of the building to 3240. The reason I put the wall in was because I figured that it was all the space I really needed especially since it included one of the bay doors. It saves on having to finish and then heat the entire shop. The other side is currently cold storage and I think it’s an efficient way of splitting up the building.

I'm so happy for you, that you've put together a dream of a shop at an age where you can get decades of use from it. Looking forward to seeing it in person sometime when I'm heading to Edmonton, (don't worry I'll check in first and not just show up . . .) That is a nice layout.

Beautiful shop, I love all the old stuff. Those are some monster tongs leaning against your crane! I'm starting on my dream shop this summer!

Love the shop tour, and especially the tour guide! It does sound like she wants a raise though....

What an awe inspiring workshop. I have an old hand cranked winch that I want to setup in my shop. I'll mount it at the base of a jib crane and run a chain loop for heavy stock.

    Amazing shop. Well done sir.
If you are planning to heat it, I suggest you look into a waste oil furnace. Used one years ago on Baffin Island. They pump out the BTUs and the fuel is free. Only drawback is they require frequent maintainence.

That's a pretty nice set up. Your grinding room is nearly half the size of my shop (24x24). You'll probably wind up filling it right quick.
Actually, try leveling the lathes off of the cross slide with a good level. You can twist a little bit of that wear out.

What an awesome setup. Love the big railroad lathe. Just wondering if it would be feasible to remove the hardware and reverse the bed in order to put the worn area way down at the end where it would rarely see use? Looks to me like it might be possible.

So do you work on the steam locomotive that they use down around Alliance? I heard ABSA shut them down.

Love your shop, but don,t get it that you want to work on dusty dirt. You might consider putting clay over it and on top of that metal chips from the late or mill. Keep it wet for some time and this gives a very hard floor that is very easy to repair.

Yes I certainly agree with you! In fact I have plans to oil it with a special canola oil product that should help it pack good.
