  • @michaellatif

    I have pondered what it means to be an avid collector and a novice model railroader.. Your dream is one I had since childhood. Love the mechanical marvels of a steam locomotive.

    • @michaellatif
      @michaellatif 17 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      I was trying to figure out how to convert a steam locomotive to electric and it just came to me. I don't need to convert the mechanical motion to electric drive just the heat source; all the steam locomotive needs to do is build pressure. A LPG/CNG electric generator can be used with electric heating elements (the kind found in water heaters) with little to no modification of the boiler. A POC can be done cheaply by sourcing *used* parts locally; water heaters (5 elements, 240V x 10A each minimum) and electric generator (13-25kW). This would reduce cost of opperation and increase fuel efficiency by 20 to 50 times when compared to oil or wood.

    • @gravelydon7072
      @gravelydon7072 16 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @@michaellatif That has already been done in Europe and it got its power from the catenary. Those 5 elements will be nowhere near enough heating to operate a steam locomotive of even an 0-4-0 size. An 0-6-0 required 480kW and still took an hour to raise the steam.

    • @michaellatif
      @michaellatif 16 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@gravelydon7072 An EMD/GE 3xx disell locomotive is no more than a 30kW generator and 10-15kW when operating. A steam locomotive, 0-4-0 (yard locomotives), needs at most 25kW. With the largest steam locomotive, 4-8-8-4 (Big Boy), 100kW (maximum) wouldn't be out of the question. What is important is thermal energy generated (efficiently) and with today's technology that's 95%+ efficiency for both electric generators and thermal elements. Example: A commercial water heater can heat, to boiling near 212C, 500 gallons of water with 10kW in an hour. Even the Mythbusters detonated (to prove a point) residential water heaters with just 240V@10A x2 elements (5kW)...

    Best of your luck with your efforts man so many people I see now in the 21th century restoring and operating steam locomotives. The best idea for you is collab with as many other railroaders especially steam locomotive operators as you can the more are united the more will be able to come back from years of rusting away. Learn from them and get a feel for what it will be like when your engine is back under it's own power. Cheers to you and Merry Christmas to you and your family Ethan
