Its such a learning curve to get used to it in wilds lol feels so different from world and I was worried I wouldn’t like it but I’m actually really happy with it! Excited to keep learning
Hard thing to adjust to is the loss of power stance, keep pressing B/circle to do that and dodge instead 😂 but bonk is not bothered bonk is still bonking
@@abobebsisame bro! i was so bummed out they changed the hammer. i’m sure it’s good but i’m not looking to relearn something i already thought i had nailed down since world. I’m also going back to LS n SnS till end game then relearn hammer after.
Great video Cowboy! I love these guides as i haven't been able to play the beta yet due to a busy work schedule. Lots of cool changes to all of the weapons. I want to add a cool side note: blunt weapons like hammer can not only deal KO damage very well but they can also build exhaust damage. Performed by striking a monster's body instead of their head. Hunting horn is another great weapon for this and other weapons like bow, switch axe and IG have certain skills/abilities that builds exhaust as well. The monster will show signs of this by drooling and pausing (shown like its catching its breath) in between actions. slow and sometimes incomplete moves as well. I love mentioning this because a lot of folks experience these things during hunts but are unaware that they can actually trigger/contribute to this effect. However, in some game versions Iceborne, the effectiveness of exhaust may be reduced due to the ability to force monsters into an enraged state. But i digress, I always stress to newer players to not be afraid to play a role when playing in groups, and while its fun to just deal damage, some weapons really shine in their nuances. intrinsically, KOs happen during a hunt but make it an objective to keep triggering them for your team for maximum fun and DPS. Cheers!
Man the hammer feels SOOOOOOO good in this game, used to play bow on worlds but now I’m a hammer main I just love it, can’t wait for the full game, stopped playing videos games years ago but this is getting me back
As a hammer bro I like greatsword. The only reason I never stayed with it was the mobility aspect. It was hard for me to wrap my mind around d needing to keep sheathing it to reposition. But imma give it another shot in wilds
One thing i realized with the hammer upswing is that if u press Y once, u have about 4 seconds to continue the rest of the Y combo and you can move alittle. This helps a lot with getting the timing of monsters to parry with the upswing.
That's the one downside to it for me. Having the downside behind a 3 move combo minimum is a bit much. Makes me feel likes it's not worth doing because you'll be spending time setting it up instead of going for that KO build up.
If I added another offset it would be the chain upswing you get after a charged hit. Tbh I think it's intentional though and keeps us focused on mobility and managing when we choose to commit. Plus I frames on the charge step are pretty good to avoid damage.
one you start using the whole kit it really comes together! that flowstate is essential to get faster hunts. dont forget to also use the claw for a dash while charging, closing the gap even faster!
I was disappointed by the capcom showcase, but hands-on now didn't realize just how much more damage uptime Hammer has by simply better aiming its attacks and not having any "ends" to the combos anymore. Finally feels A or S tier instead of C tier
i used to time the mighty charge attack directly.. fun simple risk/reward approach! now capcom is forcing you to use so many combo strings which introduce many problems, simple example is this part (11:41).. hammer moto is aim always for the head.. but we know being front the monster is very risky.. but now you are forced to stay longer with these combos and you must do counter attacks otherwise you will be injured.. let alone dealing with fast moving monsters.. they need to make these strings shorter and more simple.. and cut the extra crap.
Thank you for the tips sir. I have over 1500 total hours of time in Monster Hunter World and Rise, and all the changes to the weapons is messing me up. I like what I am seeing with the new gameplay, but figuring out the new moves is not very intuitive. Thank you for putting the work in to figuring it out and then sharing it with us. Bravo Zulu!
yes they are now forcing you into combos mindset.. this defeats purpose what makes the hammer unique which simplicity.. there are plenty of combo oriented weapons of the game.. so why hammer becoming like this is really dumb.. i feel hammer is just bulkier version of switch axe.. standing doing all these strings.
The only thing I'm still getting used to is managing up swing, without a quick charge reset it requires a lot more attention to timing to get your upswing to close ground.
Cowboy I noticed you spend quite a long time in focus mode. I initially thought it was just for targeting wounds but watching your gameplay it looks like it makes aiming all of your attacks a lot easier in general. Do you have it set to toggle or hold for left trigger?
I was just thinking something similar; like a quick spin then throw/lunge in a direction, so can be an advanced dodge or a medium hit with 'poise' boost, maybe even turned into a jump to hit air orne targets and combo to a ground smash. The hammer is great but wish there was more to it
I've been seeing some hammer speedrunners going for a 2x overhead smash, then upswing into a might charge slam combo whenever a monster is either stationary or they're knocked down. Is there a reason you go for a 4x big bang into a mighty charge slam combo, does that do more damage?
The first one you mentioned does more damage and has the benefit of the upswing being an offset attack. So you can even take some risk in setting it up.
I'd have to run the math but I think its just fun. Chasing after speed run techniques in MH takes away half your moveset usually and makes weapons not as fun, like sword and shield where all you really did was spam perfect rush in iceborne.
@@FightinCowboy Ive never been the one to sort with speed run strats all the time, especially when I’m hunting with people but it’s nice knowing what are optimal ways to dishing more damage(if the team isn’t dishing enough damage, I can pick up the slack). I’m all for using different combos based on the situation so it’s nice to take advantage and learn every move for each weapon type has.
So if your slidng down a mountain as u charge your hammer to red youll do a Flipping Hammer Move... so damn dope.. i thought they forgot to put it back in the game lol. but thats the only way of doing it as of now
@FightinCowboy Oh! Alright, thank you. I must have just watched another video where they called it a counter. I'll have to have a look at the manual; hard to remember some of this stuff.
I mean it functions as a counter. The 2 new mechanics names are "Clash" and "Offset". Clashes refer to repeated blocking and eventually you clash with the monster and do big damage after throwing them off the shield. Offset's are a pre-emptive counter attack that if you connect with the monster as they attack you knock them back and in some cases get a unique follow-up attack for free.
@@FightinCowboy Ahhh okay... I've only used DB and hammer so far, just beat Rei Dau with both. I tried looking at the in game tutorials and weapon controls (under play guide in the start menu) and both seemed very shallow. Is there more in game resources that I'm missing? Sorry to bug ya.
That's all, hence why I did breakdowns for every weapon. A lot of monster hunter knowledge is passed down through the community which is both ridiculous and also kind of endearing.
Is the offset of the hammer comparably useless? Greatsword and switch axe have their own follow up attacks after offset but for hammer you just continue regularly.
After offset you get a free mighty charge. It doesn't run at the monster like the Greatsword follow up but its super strong to go straight into mighty charge if you are close enough.
KO isn't a damage type necessarily. Any hits the hammer does to the head is building up the stun/KO threshold on top of damage. The uppercut has always just done a lot of stun buildup.
How easy is this to play on PC? I did alright in Worlds on PS4 , but the camera just felt too slow and clunky. Love this franchise, and I just got a new gaming pc, so I'm hoping mouse & keyboard won't be a pain to relearn.
Mouse and keyboard feels really solid definitely a large improvement from Iceborne release I’ve not really had to rebind a whole lot to make it comfortable. I have a 14 button mouse so your results may vary.
It's got combos, a lot of them now. But the beauty of the hammer from before is now gone. In Mhw and rise you could charge up a big bang finisher for an opening and unleash it. It's working well now because the monsters in the beta have good openings and aren't super fast, but all those combos aren't going to do much vs a fast end game monster I feel. It's also really bad at opening wounds from what it looks like.
The change that make me very sad is the different impact feeling from Wilds, for example the Hammer sliding down attack ( the rotation that you show with the mount but without the mount like in MH World ) has much less impact feeling, like other attacks, that kind of " animation stop frame " when you hit a monster, in World was SO GOOD and satisfying, but here....is really different and they probably wants to make it more " arcade " and fast, and i miss so much that world sensation...what do you think? To me is a little and important negative side of the gameplay..
I killed Zapdos last night while jumping on the PC beta with each weapon type. Hammer and Gunlance are my favorites. The anime swords (LS ans DB) are very fun as well. My only small adjust is trying to fit in affinity summersault. The super slide speed and bigger arch took the longest to adjust.

how do you time the offset attack with weapons ? a short video on the timing would be really helpful. for the visual cues and such
The offset should connect same time as you're about to get hit. Its a pretty generous window once you get the timing down.

You can prep a mighty charge but it doesn't have a chase down like GS does.
