I imagine someone probably warened you, but you guys are watching the wrong subtitles. That is the Close Captions (CC) subtitles, which is meant for the *dub*. It is use the dub script. You should watch the other one that has script for the subbed version. Naturally, the dub translation is not necessarily wrong per se, but translation for dub need to account for more limitations and require more compromises (such as having to account for mouth flaps and such), so it is generally better to watch the proper sub.
As someone who has ADHD, seeing Laios being distracted by his own tought, and going in his obessive tangent when talking about monster, totaly disregarding the mood is the most relatable thing i ever saw in anime.
i also have adhd and am a long time fan of this manga, and ive felt for awhile now that laios is straight up one of the best neurodivergent characters ever written. i can't remember if the manga author has confirmed if it was intentional or not, but the way she wrote him very clearly implies he's on the autism spectrum. he has alot of difficulty reading the mood, picking up on nonverbal social cues, and he hyperfixates like literally no one else 😂 ive read alot of stories with the same sort of character archetype, but have never seen hyperfixation written so accurately before. makes me wonder if the author is also neurodivergent lol
So, you guys mentioned feeling sad you couldn't actually cook some of these things. Funnily enough, the manga had recipies included, with lines like "if Dire Ground Shark is not available in your area, substitute 1/2 kilo of Tuna" (Not a real line, just an example to avoid spoilers). Lots of fun.
SOME IMPORTANT NOTE: Netflix has two kinds of subtitles, CC (Close Caption) which is just the script for the dub. And the actual Japanese translation. What you guys are reading are the CC so they won't be accurate. There's a scene where Marcille says "Laios" in japanese but the subs say "No no" instead.
Honestly, I would recommend they stick to the CC anyway, because the regular subtitles for the Japanese version have their own issue of having a lot of awkward phrasing, to the point of being almost mistranslations at times (for instance, a recent episode where the subs have a character say "you still have this sword?", when it's meant to be referring to the same *type* of swords and it's not literally the same sword), so I would say the localized bits that don't always line up to the audio are a smaller price to pay for a much better translation and delivery.
@@Surycepersonally disagree with "better translation" - the orcs are made to speak in a mix of AAVE and caveman speech in ep4 (while i believe they just spoke regular japanese in the original, to underscore the point that they arent any lesser than the other races), and them changing chilchuck saying "poor timing" to saying "you're so cringe" in the latest ep really doesnt match up with his established characterization
@@Suryce This is one instance of the subs being incorrect as compared to the dub which just changes character nuances like Chilchuck calling Laios "cringe" rather than just scolding him for poor timing, Marcille just being contradictory to them talking about vegetables and fruits being gross even on the surface as opposed to her getting caught out for having a double standard and submitting to the logic. Then there's straight up wrong and changed lines like changing Laios' observation of Marcille in a particular outfit to one about their outfits in general in ep 10 and everything revolving the Scorpion where Senshi flipflops between eating the tail giving you the runs and it just tasting bad as opposed to the Japanese which just refers it to tasting bad
@@Suryce "Laios, omae aikawarazu kimowarui ken tsukaeterunna" > "Laios, you like always/still using (that) creepy sword" So, words by words the sub is pretty spot on. Moreover Laios using the same sword for years since his early days with Falin, so the dub using "you should stop with the creepy-ass swords" (plular) also kinda incorrect, because it's indicating like he like to use random swords from the dungeon while in reality he never change his sword before.
@@SuryceI agree with you, the Japanese subtitle translation is very stiffly and awkwardly worded. I find people have issues noticing bad translations unless they're "obvious", so people actually gunning for those ones is a bit sad to see. Then again, the dubtitles seem to have their own problems, but really, it seems overall they have better general phrasing and syntax than the JP translated subs, which at certain times feel awkward and too literal.
The Dungeon Meshi manga is one of the tightest, most thematically coherent stories Ive ever read, and the adaptation has veen excellent. I hope you enjoy!
So glad you guys are checking this out, its a really special series. I highly recommend anyone who is enjoying it to go read the series, It goes some absolutely wild places and has a really fantastic story arc and ending.
I literally don’t know how to stress enough that for Laios, ITS NOT A SEX THING. Which is so funny to me. He legitimately just wants to eat monsters and learn everything he can about them. Yes even the Medusa. He’s our autistic king
I’ll back this point. He’s really into everything about how monsters function, and in some cases (like the vines of the Man Eating Plant) wants to know how the experience feels directly, but he’s not actually horny about it. It appeals to him on a different level.
The guy in plate armor just watching as his less armored and less close-combat-oriented party members get waxed by a dragon while he mopes off to the side thinking about food. No wonder the DM had the dragon eat his sister. 🙄
Alright something you misunderstand. They believe the Cleric is already dead. They're looking to save her corpse before its digested so she can be resurrected.

I'm just gonna shoutout the fantastic OP and ED because I haven't seen them get much love in all the praise (deserved) that this show is getting! The OP especially is so good!
Just one thing that I thought the anime didn't make too clear. Laios's sister Falin (the cleric) is dead. 100% dead and done inside the dragon. What the plot is getting to the dragon fast enough that it hasn't fully digested her so they can retrieve her body and try to resurrect it. The better shape the corpse is in the easier it is to bring the person back (but it's never 100% guaranteed), and while Marcille DOES know how to resurrect someone it's not her specialty and trying it on a corpse that is too damaged can fail with consequences.
@@leonardomarquesbellini oh, I didn't know! I hope it's not that many, cause honestly I don't see this as an issue with the show's narrative/directing. I mean, aside the talk about dragon digestion and all in this very episode, last time we see Falin she's been squeezed between the huge teeth of a angry killer dragon of flaming death (tm), what do people expect to happen next? xD
Honestly speaking, the show would be better if they didn't put the Falin sacrifice scene... They can just carry the story by Laios' appetite as the driving plot. While I appreciate the cooking and dungeon adventures, I still feel a bit uncomfortable that the heccing sister is DYING.
I love that in a lot of media elves are portrayed as particular about their food and often strictly vegan, and here's this girl complaining about the dungeon cooking but still eating all kinds of monsters.
We do have veganism in this world, but it is more about religion and magic systems u apply, which is more realistic than “nature good, elf love” if you ask me😂
I guess that stereotype comes from viewing elves as tree-huggers, but I can't think of any story where elves are actually depicted as vegans/vegetarians, and there's at least one case where they are carnivores/cannibals.

6:37 We're on a somewhat tight time constraint of not wanting Laios' sister to die? Idk how long it would take to do a very easy job in this world but going right back into the dungeon to eat the food that's there for free (only costing energy and effort) to regain that by sleeping and eating would really cut that time down to basically nothing
I'm getting hungry just looking at these wonderful foods. And you're right, Jacob. Everything I know about the show is all those frames from the manga with funny faces of Marcille that my friend was obsessed with I really need to read it one day
Selling all of their items to go into the dungeon alone to rescue his sister was an unfathomably awful idea! In this instance, though, it makes sense that he would be that desperate since he just watched his sister die. Instead of selfishness, it was just all he could think of.
Started watching this anime today. It feels so much like a D&D campaign that went just completely nuts after one of the players asked if the monsters are edible.
Dungeon Meshi is my favorite manga, and the anime has been great so far. I am glad to see you guys giving this show a shot, I’m sure you’ll enjoy what the story and world of Dungeon Meshi has to offer.
(Writing this with the read that Laios is ABSOLUTELY autistic) Personally, I think the interest in the plant tentacles this episode is a prime example of the way Laios displays sensory-seeking behaviors. He's delighted by new experiences and foods because they provide new sensations, and monsters specifically fall into his oldest, most important special interest!
Let's go!! obligatory food pun: we are eating well! but you guys NEED to change the subtitles. it's one of those animes with terrible inaccurate netflix subtitles
The subs you guys are using are the subtitles that match the dub I think. There should be better subs that actually translate the Japanese, or at least better than the dub does most of the time. Also glad you guys are finally watching this. It's really good. Even better that you have experience with tabletop games.
Oh hell yeah this series might just be the pinnacle of high fantasy storytelling going on right now and that's fully considering the strength of its competition
If you want to take the DnD angle to this, think of it more as second edition, when the classes were rogue, fighter, mage, cleric, elf, dwarf and halfling, and the design intent was very much survival over tactical combat. Really excited to see you react to all of this great story tho
Laios is more like a fighter than the Paladin in my opinion; But some friends played Pathfinder told me he is most likely to be a ranger in Pathfinder, because some subclasses of ranger in pathfinder could also wear heavy/medium armor.
People say that laios is autistic coded, but q vtuber reactor named Aliciaxlife told another take that it makes more sense. Laios is heavily ADHD coded, which explains a lot about how often he goes into he's own head
Okay, so this is one of those where I consciously don't read the dubtitles and just use my ears so I don't go mad from the mismatch. Also, D&D -> Wizardry -> Japan -> [...] -> Dungeon Meshi 🙏
This anime is delightful! Was this show made specifically for us or what?!

Yep. Loopholes, loopholes. It's not _technically_ a human... He is _that_ guy.

Question is which is a worse day for Laios: a monster that cannot be cooked and eaten or Falen was eaten by the red dragon?
That digital zoom on Marcille face makes that entire scene feel like someone's shitpost.
Excellent choice, I say
I just love how the staff is just "Eh folks are gonna meme this shot. We can do it for them."

no one is prepared for the world building and everything else thats gonna happen
OHHHHH TWO OF MY FAVE THINGS TOGETHER!! IM SO HYOED THAT YOURE BOTH REACTING TO THIS
Oh man, after that intro I’m convinced this show is perfect for you two! 😂🎉
"There's only so much plot [a cooking show] can have" Alrighty, then. I look forward to episode 13.
Thank God Laios won't ever be able to meet Riko... With the two of them together the Dungeon would be in serious danger xD
You think that runt constitutes an ANCIENT red dragon? HA!
マルシルがツタに絡まった瞬間に、ふたりとも目がキラキラしましたねwww
This was an extremely enjoyable video! You guys are very fun
15:43 thats a real thing... the largest thing a carnivorous plant will eat is a sheep and it dose it by trapping and starving them
i legit cheered when i saw this! i just know you guys will love this show!
Your after-discussion is so funny ,I can't
Restuarant to Another World is another great anime with adventurers, cooking, and wanting to taste a red dragon.
I’ve been waiting for Ya’ll specifically to watch this, because I knew ya’ll would be interested in theory crafting with the D&D logic of the show.
YESSSS PEAK BEGINS
WE ARE LOCKED IN
they are already watching peak and they are not liking it
@@electricant55? What is this about lol
@@opal4293 frieren
@@electricant55 What in the world gave you the impression they don't like Frieren lol
This show is actually really good in english and Senshi is voiced by ProZD
Laios is more like a fighter than the Paladin in my opinion;
But some friends played Pathfinder told me he is most likely to be a ranger in Pathfinder, because some subclasses of ranger in pathfinder could also wear heavy/medium armor.
People say that laios is autistic coded, but q vtuber reactor named Aliciaxlife told another take that it makes more sense. Laios is heavily ADHD coded, which explains a lot about how often he goes into he's own head
Ah yes, the second best cooking anime after Golden Kamuy
laios being a canary in a coal mine comment amuses me XD
YESSSSSSS i've been waiting for them to see this show FOREVER
Oh wait you guys are watching this too? LETS GOOOOOO!
Yeah.... "happy" is not the word I would use to describe but you're in for peak fiction of last decade!
Laios is like 1000% a ranger class that just happens to wear heavy armor......
The real paladin is definitely Fallin.
Okay, so this is one of those where I consciously don't read the dubtitles and just use my ears so I don't go mad from the mismatch.
Also, D&D -> Wizardry -> Japan -> [...] -> Dungeon Meshi 🙏
