What’s your feeling on tinted lacquer vs rubbed stain finishes?
Personally I’m not a fan of rubbed colour. Always looks patchy and one dimensional to me compared to the depth you can achieve with tinted lacquer coats. I’m a lacquer guy, so am genuinely interested in how you compare the results from both processes.
Love the faux binding idea. Particularly on Strat bodies where the cutaways can be tricky with traditional binding. I actually modified my StewMac binding channel jig with a deeper donut so I could do binding channels on Strat bodies. 😬

That looks great man, love the color combo! I'm glad that you did this video because I was very curious as to the best way to do faux binding. I had just assumed that you tape off the binding area and just pray for no seepage. The sealer definitely adds a layer of insurance....I would assume that you could even take it one step further and mask off the binding before applying the stain. I will be trying this for sure. Thanks again for sharing the knowledge!

Derek, Thank you for making this video. I'm building a Firebird style guitar and I did a purple with black underneath and it came out beautifully. Minor error spots but it looks great. I would like to do a silver binding but I'm afraid I might be going too far down the rabbit hole.

Ah ah doing faux binding is a pain sometimes! But you know what, I'm stuck with it as I make real wood binding on my guitars but don't want the stain to go in! So I have to mask them. Glad you showed us the gluboost tape, was using the frogtape but the less larger I found was 12mm.Ah ah!
"Probly coulda taped it but sometimes that doesn't go so well, either." Ahem. Accidents don't happen, they are caused. If you carefully backtape the stain-to lines on the sealed faux binding every time, it pays off in the long run over a number of guitars and produces a more consistently professional- looking result. Being in a hurry on such an important feature of the guitar is an unnecessary gamble. All's well that ends well though. Spend your time how you want but don't be upset or disappointed when failing to take an effective precaution at the right moment costs you more time than it was worth later in the finishing process.

kimball hardwoods are amazing. i have had bad luck with other suppliers but kimball hardwoods has such an impressive stock of figures maple that even being in australia i am more than willing to pay the high postage cost to get my hands on the stuff

I would like to make a faux binding on a guitar with tru-oil or tung oil finish. Do you think it would work to apply the oil finnish on the faux binding before the staining step, or should I keep the clear top coat for the binding and the oil finnish for the rest of the body ?
What size bit did you use to cut the selector switch??

Great video. I'm about to try this for the first time on a tele body. Any tips for doing this with a burst top? I'm planning to apply a darker color first that I'll sand back to make the grain pop when the lighter colors are applied. I'm worried I'll sand through the sealer on the binding when I do that though.
Love that color. Just traded my quilted purple schecter 😢. An absolutely stunning guitar. But I got a Les Paul custom out of the deal. So I can’t cry too hard.😬

Looks good. Finding tape that will stay smooth and stuck down on those tight corners is a key. I’ve done the opposite when spraying a solid color. Mask off the binding, spray a light coat of clear to seal the edges of the tape then spray the solid color. Spraying the clear after tape and before the color was a big revelation.

I don't care for pickguards .. and my heavy metal Strat doesn't have a pickplate.

I had to check my PRS after you mentioned that even they "mess" up the natural binding. Sure enough, when looking in the exact same place on the higher horn it's not as clean as the rest of the binding.
Very good info bud! I have a question about natural binding. Would it work if you use a round over router bit around the edges after you stain the body? Will it give it the same look doing it that way?
What size router bit did you use for the edge roundover on this body? I like this look much better than the traditional super rounded strat edges.

I recently bought a see thru purple MH1000NT, beautiful color and my wife loves it also.
I'm doing a green burst and will finish it in Tru Oil. I was wondering if I could use Tru Oil to paint the binding first instead of sanding sealer to avoid any overcoat incompatibilities?
I did this exact thing without the clear coat for the natural binding, but I had just a touch of dye bleed (not a lot). Any chance I could still scrape with with a razor to remove it without damaging the wood (Mahogany)? Other option is to just tape it and run an acrylic paint marker around it to make it a bright white binding but was really going for the wood look.
hey bigD! Wondering if you ever waited to do the roundover on the top? If you stained the top first, then did the roundover, wouldnt that work for creating a faux exposing fresh wood? Just curious if youve tried it. I like doing the faux stuff better than traditional binding and watching your vid got the gears turning. I figured it would also cut way down on the possibility of running over the edge accidentally.
Have you tried doing the dye work then adding the radius after? Just curious if that helps with the bleed.
Guys,help me out,,,was one piece of binding wrapped around the side then folded over on to the top or is it done in to 2 strips ?
Would it work if you routed a radius into the edge to get the same result?

Can this be done on a guitar that already has a gloss finish on it? And if so how?
PRS does this kind of binding on all their custom series. There must be an easy way to do this... I've seen them do advanced stain burst in 5 minutes. I'm sure there's a lot of prep. But still... There must be an easy way!
they use that fuller plaster. I wanted to show this can be done without toxic chemicals

When you scrape the binding after the stain doesn't it sort of take off the finish that you just put on? Have you ever gone the other way and scraped the binding after the stain? Anyway, beautiful top! Thanks.
It does but I spray it all back on. That’s how I clean up any mess

What I meant was can you scrape paint off as well as scraping stain off. I spent some time researching and discovered that you can scrape stain and paint. So anyway thanks for your vids. Very informative!
Any tips on “ebonizing” a rosewood fretboard black?
I know this isn't what you want to hear, but don't. Isn't the natural grain nice and unique?. Obviously if you want it, you want it. Just suggesting. He was a fan of the Angeli's black leather dye. Not all black is black. Think Stew Mack sell a good black dye also. Good luck.
Too many oils in rosewood. You can try the vinegar and steel wool trick. Or just use some leather dye on it.

too much pigment in the purple. but I don't like diluting the dyes.

yea this dye requires a little bit of work.
BigDGuitars - Dyes don’t have pigment. It’s a chemical colorant molecular in size. Chances are the blue in the purple might give it a green tinge with the color of the wood.
I have also seen green tinges when it’s going on heavy. Reminds me of gasoline floating on water.

But what you said about PRS guitars using this method I don’t believe is correct and I’m unsure really how. Even in PRS Korean and Indonesian models they channel and glue in actual binding strips, of course most likely faux wood binding but nonetheless it’s actually binding. I have provided a video of the Indonesian factory and at 8:05 in the video you will see the routing and glueing of binding taking place. The same methods are used on the US and Korean models as well.
