  • Sailing to the Galapagos Islands - Chase the Story 35
    With the anticipation of leaving for the HUGE Pacific Ocean crossing weighing on all of us, we set out for the magical Galapagos Islands. Alas, the Pacific doesn’t live up to it’s name and we have to fight our way south and nearly end up in Ecuador! But, just as our spirits are down, a pod of jumping dolphins comes to cheer us on!!
    After quite a struggle, Tasha and Liam catch a massive male Mahi Mahi and we devour sushi for days to celebrate. Even a biblical rain storm couldn’t get in the way, and the crew decide to take a promptu shower to make the most of the free water.
    We hope everyone enjoys this story; it's got a few ups and downs, but the crew grew as a team and got through it, and we were happy to knock off a few miles nearer to our goal - the magical Galapagos Islands.
    Happy sailing everyone!

    Have to agree with many of the comments posted, love how you guys share on all aspects of life on a sailboat. And you guys know all too well anything fun or exciting will have its challenges, but hey in a few miles 😉 you come to that island where the water is crystal clear blue for 50-100 feet and when your touch that white sandy beach, you'll have to pinch yourself to make sure your not dreaming. And all those challenges just melt away! Sail on-sail safe! 👍👍 ⛵⛵⛵⛵

    These are the videos I love the most, seeing everyone and Cheeky Monkey boat out on the water working with the elements and seemingly always finding something to smile and laugh about.
    Nice camera and production work. I loved the 'snapshot' of the catch, helps keep the video interesting. And the DOF work from time to time to mix it up.
    Thanks once again for sharing yet another great story of your journeys. Hoping to splash our boat in a couple of weeks and join you. Sorta. A few thousand miles east of you. But in spirit anyway....

    Union Jack Flag upside down!! Guys You have the British flag up the mast with the U.S. Stars and Stripes upside down. Flags are flown left to right. As such the Union Jack (or Union Flag if it's on land) should have the thicker part of the white cross leading in a clockwise direction. It's true that many people don't realise that there is a front, back, top and bottom to the British flag. Love the videos. Im in Portugal on my boat and hope to do the same trip as you guys. Cheers.

    Thanks Cheeky Monkey for the ride along. Today, Summertime will sail in the Fingerlakes and though we won't catch Mahi, we will throw the kids overboard & swim, listen to music and enjoy the waning days of summer.

    Just want to let you guys know that I truly relish this awesome situation where you can carry hundreds (thousands?) of virtual crewmembers with you, who can share (some of) the experience of blue water sailing. I have been through the Panama Canal three times now! lol).
    At 70 now, I have (literally) missed the (cruising) boat, but have at least spent 3 months in New Caledonia - (Please don't bypass it, check out Catamaran Impi's vids for proof), have owned a couple of small yachts (J24 and Holland 1/4 tonner), done over 30 weekend charters in big cats and monos, and currently make do with a Hobie Tandem Island trimaran, but my heart is still out in that deep blue sea.
    Keep the brilliant content coming, I am having a ball

    A wee bit about Flag Etiquette. Never fly a national flag above that of another country, in some places you may be fined for this. Your Union Jack is up-side-down (a sign of distress). There is no need to fly them at sea when not in the sight of land.
    I love your videos. Fair winds and smooth seas.

    Hi Guys, Just love your videos so please keep em coming they're great!! One thing I wish you would include more of is the financial end of things. What these trips are costing, how you budget and so forth. I am re-fitting a 35 year old 26' saiboat to go off solo sailing. I have no illusions that I'm ever going to sailing around the world, but I can see myself running the east coast with the seasons and a trip to the Carribean or even Panama. Which I think is a bit of a stretch for me. How did you decide on a multi-hull sailboat vs a mono hull? Well I guess that's enough questions for now. Should you ever get up my way I hope you'd stop in and say hello or I can come out to visit your boat. God Bless and good luck! Bill S.

    • @ChasetheStoryAroundTheWorld
      @ChasetheStoryAroundTheWorld  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +spinnaker5514 Thanks for the comment Bill. We did the east coast of the US on our old boat. You can check out the story here: turftosurf.com Budget-wise, there are some blogs out there that do any amazing job in tracking their spending to the penny, so you should be able to find one or two that can give you an idea of expense going down the ICW and to the Caribbean.

    Ryan, I realised that I left a question on here from an old google account. It was about the choice of a Cat or monohull. I've deleted the old account and its deleted the conversation! Anyway. Thanks again for answering. I do remember what you said so no need to repeat ;) and Fair winds to you all. Catch you out there sometime. Sooner rather than, later I hope.

    You need to take down that torn Union flag and replace it with a proper sized Red Ensign and have it flown at the stern. This looks so damn tacky.
    /Fair winds and following seas.

    • @ChasetheStoryAroundTheWorld
      @ChasetheStoryAroundTheWorld  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Eric Tacky (or tatty) it may be, but Cheeky Monkey hails from New York, so won't take too kindly to having the Ensign flown from the stern! There aren't many people in the middle of the Pacific to see your flags anyway, so we might start taking them down, as we're getting through flags way too quickly.

    Good winds.

    • @ChasetheStoryAroundTheWorld
      @ChasetheStoryAroundTheWorld  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Marcelo fidallgo Sailing at night is the same as sailing by day - we point the boat in roughly the right direction set the autopilot and watch movies :) There's not much to hit out there at sea and it's either fixed (so on charts) or moving (and therefore has lights on it).

    • @marcelofidallgo1225

      +Rohan Border Terrier I'm not expert (clearly - I don't know what way up the flag goes!) but the flag is just a way to say 'Brit on Board' as the boat hails from New York, so doesn't a Union Jack work ok?

    • @RohanTheBT
      @RohanTheBT 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Chase the Story Sailing I'm sure Ryan knows the etiquette but flags up halyards should really only be courtesy flag of the country you are visiting. I don't think there are rules for indicating nationality of crew.

    @timothyblazer1749 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Do you have a cunningham on your main? Just wondering.. that along with outhaul, vang and traveler adjustments, as well as hauling like the bejessus on the jib sheet tension, could give you something like 10%+ better pointing angle with little more leeway.
    But.. Im sure the Capt knows all about it :-)

    • @timothyblazer1749
      @timothyblazer1749 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Guess Im just curious.. do you have a powered vang as well? I would expect there to be a hydraulic vang on a rig like yours. Fair winds!

    • @ChasetheStoryAroundTheWorld
      @ChasetheStoryAroundTheWorld  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Timothy Zyg no. No vang or Cunningham. I don't believe be ever seen them on cats. Don't know why! Don't overestimate the captain though - I know nothing!!

    • @gregboon
      @gregboon 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cats do not need vangs, monohulls have vangs. Helia 44 has a 20' wide traveler so you just move the traveler and the main sheet will keep the boom tight. No need to have a vang to pull the boom down. None of the cats I have rented ever had an adjustable Cunningham. In this video you are reefed. Your reefing downhaul line is a Cunningham that is adjustable. One trick I have learned going upwind in these cruising cats is to move the traveler 1' upwind or so to position the boom to be on the centerline. You can point a little higher with the boom on the centerline and the only way to do this is to travel upwind a bit. You guys are awesome!! Please keep the excellent videos coming.

    • @timothyblazer1749
      @timothyblazer1749 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** Cats do not need vangs? Why so? Richard Woods seems to think they are a valuable safety feature. To quote:
      "You should make use of the full beam of the boat. I don't use a kicking strap; instead I always use a 4:1 preventer on the boom and a barber hauler on the genoa. That's why leech telltales and jib woollies are the best "go fast" instruments you can have. The preventer also helps stop sail chafe. The boom vang rope is the only one on board in which I don't tie a stopper knot. That way if I have to gybe and release the vang in a hurry, it can run out freely.
      A boom vang is also a good safety feature. I have a friend who didn't fit one on his 43ft catamaran. He tried to prevent a gybe all standing and broke his wrist. As he was 300 miles from land at the time and had a young family on board it was a distressing and painful experience for them all."

    I love what you are doing, and I wish I could do it myself today - and I will do it someday - but, what is the point of raw fish and cooked rice in a pre-processed wrap? I mean, seriously, couldn't you just cook the fish and rice together and wrap it in a hand made tortilla (made from pre-processed flour)? HAHA I just don't get the point of raw fish if you have to cook the rice anyway.

    It looks like you had an easier first few days than we did out of PC but then you got hit with the downpours. You all looked a little tired. Sailing from PC to Salinas Ecuador had the most adverse winds and rain to date. We tacked at about the same place you did because the winds and swells got too strong and direct to motor. Can you guys carry that much extra fuel? How many jerry can gallons do you have compared to your tanks?

    • @ChasetheStoryAroundTheWorld
      @ChasetheStoryAroundTheWorld  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      We don't carry a lot of extra fuel because our tanks are so big. We carry 500 liters in our tanks and for long passages we have 100 liters we carry in jerry cans. That trip was definitely tiring but still relatively comfortable on a cat

    Hi there. Can you tell me how a cat sails compared to a monohull on an ocean crossing? I'm really torn on what to choose. Im going to be single sailing and living aboard. I love the idea of space that you appear to have but i do love single hull sailing. You can tell i have sailed on a cat. I have been told that its an uncomfortable motion ? I suppose i have to compromise somehow but would love to know your thoughts.
    Loving the story. Hope to meet you out there some time.

      +Steve Winn I'll give this answer my best shot (I'm no expert, but have owned two boats, one a monohull and one a cat). A monohull rolls from side to side for longer while a cat bounces more as it will stay, at the end of the day, pretty darn flat. Some people prefer the roll, and some people prefer the bounce. But, if you're lucky, you'll prefer the bounce, as it seems everything else while at sea on a cat is better: everything is on the flat so you can leave things on tables/surfaces, the extra space etc. is all awesome. Where, I believe, a monohull is clearly better is in marinas (as a monohull is cheaper and there are a lot more options for monohulls) and when day sailing (as the thrill of sailing is much greater on a monohull). But this is just by initial thoughts on the subject. I'm sure there are a lot more people out there who have a lot more to say on it! Ryan

      Thank you for taking the time to reply. I'm off to do my coastal tidal on another mono very soon. I'll have to get myself some Cat sailing and then just go for it one way or another. I know the marina issues and wonder how realistic it is to this that I can anchor, fee free for a lot of the time? I'm thinking that for a once a year ocean crossing, I could cope with the bounce for the more common, much shorter passages. By the way after writing this, I almost immediately found your wife's blog which pretty much answered a lot of details for me. You make a great team!!

    1) You really musn't fly the (British) union flag from your spreader - it is actually illegal as it is the flag for a commissioned Royal Navy warship only. You should fly a red ensign.2) Especially better not to fly it upside-down (around 8'35")! ;-)
