WHAT ARE WE AFRAID OF? Sailing Across the Pacific - Chase The Story 41

  • Sailing Across the Pacific: This is the moment we have all been excited about - but it turns out we're also a little afraid of also!! In our sail around the world, this voyage is probably going to be our furthest distance covered and longest time at sea. As we prepare to sail across the Pacific Ocean, we have a sad moment as we have to say goodbye to Lance as he goes off to follow other adventures. The crew freaks out a bit with the upcoming internet withdrawal and people’s fears start coming out.
    Once sailing, we soon find a flaw in our sail plan and try out a new revolutionary sail configuration and it doesn’t go all according to plan. Tasha entertains the crew playing 'A minor' on the guitar, over and over and over again, Liam makes a mess in the galley and the Big Banana flies once more. Enjoy.

      Sitting relaxing on the back of the boat and I was wondering if you fell how long it may be before someone noticed you had gone...and no life jacket. Everyone else at spread around the boat doing their thing.

    • @ChasetheStoryAroundTheWorld

      That's why crew have personal AIS beacons for night watch, when they need to go forward or aft of the cockpit -- far more important than a life jacket, which won't tell anyone where you're located.

    Stoked to see your boat in Two Afloat Sailing video so we know you guys did fine. What a great story and couple! Hopefully some of you cruisers with CATs may help Ryan and Nicole travel the world for a bit longer when Ryan's Muscular Dystrophy gets so bad they can't be on the ocean sailing their own boat anymore.
    Besides having the clicker on, reeling with the rod upside down, and that fillet style you did great. Wahoo is way up there on the list of sashimi quality fish! When we catch one it rarely makes it back to the dock without breaking out the sushi kit once the fish is chilled on ice for an bit.
    Also if you can ice the fish before filleting it the meat firms up and the job is so much easier.

    • @ChasetheStoryAroundTheWorld
      @ChasetheStoryAroundTheWorld  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Jonathan Kaany That's a great suggestion regarding icing the fish first...though we don't always have ice to spare (our gin and tonics need ice too ;) Ryan and Nicole really are a lovely, lovely couple and we're very lucky to be able to call them friends.

  • @805gregg
    @805gregg 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Probably a good idea to release the little fish, so they can grow and reproduce, plus it's hard to filet a sardine. It's easy to slow down just back the jib and heave to.

    • @ChasetheStoryAroundTheWorld
      @ChasetheStoryAroundTheWorld  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +805gregg When downwind (as we are in the trade winds) we have either the screecher or parasailor spinnaker up. You can't heave to with either of these sails, I'm afraid. It would be great if we could though!

    thank you for turning clicker off very good .now if we can get u too turn the reel the right way your reeling in backwards and hes got pole upside down mate is doing it right tho

    • @fredknows1667
      @fredknows1667 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Maybe we have been doing it wrong all of these years , after all they are catching and landing fish and we are watching. I have seen reels grenade when a clicker is left on. It may take blowing up a reel before it sinks in.

    • @ChasetheStoryAroundTheWorld
      @ChasetheStoryAroundTheWorld  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Correct me if I'm wrong, but the roller at the end of the pole allows the line to be reeled in either way, so it would seem to me if you are right handed or left handed, you can reel in the line on either side. Or alternatively if one arm gets tired. Otherwise, why would the roller allow it work both ways? I'm no fishing expert of course, but this obsession with having the reel on one specific side when clearly the rod allows it to go both ways, makes no sense to me, until I get a more thorough explanation. I would, however, like to be able to put this argument straight one way or another, as when we joked on an earlier video about holding the reel the right way up, we had just as many comments from fisherman that the reel belongs on the lower side. So if I could get all fisherman to agree here, once and for all, which way the reel belongs, or perhaps that it's a preferential thing, then perhaps we can take that into consideration :-) -Tasha

    • @briztia
      @briztia 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      And the conv reel on rail is backwards if your lefty they sell them. It just makes fishing lot easier, the guy on port side is doing it right.

  • @sainity1

    Asymmetrical spinnaker is the sail you're missing.

  • @seanbirchall5292
    @seanbirchall5292 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    What is the big issue with the fishing rods, the reel always hangs underneath, because then the rod won't spin and possibly cut your arm with the line, so there. Lol.

  • @Livxer
    @Livxer 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm nowhere near a professional, but you should be able to fly your parasailor not only dead downwind, but also in lower degrees. Especially in that gap in the sailplan, that you spoke of.

    • @ChasetheStoryAroundTheWorld
      @ChasetheStoryAroundTheWorld  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Livxer My neither :) The problem is that without a pole to extend the windward clew further out, the sail is blocked by the mainsail if they're both flying at the same time. When the wind is around 150degrees apparent, the main + screecher is a faster combination than the symmetrical can be on it's own. Hope this helps.

      I would be curious to know how Fountaine Pajot interest is trending, Ryan and Tash on Cheeky Monkey ( chase the story ) have been great unpaid marketers for that brand, I have seen Brian from SV Delos looking adoringly at catamarans as well.

    What about the fish and the water bottle??? I´m a total novice - but is it possible to drown a fish? GREAT VLOG!

      You put vodka in it to stun the fish so that it stops thrashing.

      Technically yes you can drown a fish, specifically a saltwater fish in freshwater.

    It would have been so much better when you were narrating the sail problems if you got a beer and laid down. Just get everybody's reactions to you relaxing.

    dont understand the gap in your sail plan. you said there's a hole between ~125-160AWA but shouldn't the parasailor work between 70 and 180AWA? i'm about to fit on to my boat, so any practical experiences that dont match the advertising would be great to know. my sail inventory consists of: 100 jib, code 0, main, storm jib, parasailor.

      +Derek DeMarco Hi Derek. We don't use a pole, so I'm not sure what range you'd get with a Parasailor if you used one. It's hard to work out how a Parasailor would be a useful sail upwind, especially with the other sails you have in your inventory. Hope that helps.

    Seems to be more an issue of sail trim then sail plan. Just shoot some video of the genny in action, maybe somebody might give some insights.

    What model / type of boat is this?

      I have been binge watching, thanks, but just on this video saw how blunt the bows are on this boat- looks like it has a lot of drag with such a rounded shape. Any reason for this, why they aren't like a Gunboat for instance with the knife shape up front?

    Thanks for the great videos! Little hint from one of those outraged fishermen, first cut the fillet off of the fish, then remove the skin from the fillet. Like this:

      That's what we do with all the fish apart from Wahoo -- there's no point removing the skin off the wahoo because it's perfectly edible and very thin. That's what I've found anyway. -Tasha

    the background music serves only to kill the immersion and is unnecessary. I seriously don't understand why.
