- When Mary and Frank return to the guesthouse, Roberta takes Mary to the car, and Frank orders the tutors out. We find that it's the finished proof for the Millennium Prize problem Diane had been working on. Evelyn says she doesn't believe it because she would have shared it with the world. Frank tells her that Diane gave him clear instructions to wait to publish it until after their mother's death. He tells her that she can go ahead and publish it, and leave Mary alone. Since she asks, he tells Evelyn that if she refuses, he'll take the folder away and wait to publish it until after Evelyn dies. Evelyn is shocked and in tears, but she takes the deal.
At the end, Mary is shown attending classes at the university in the mornings, and the elementary school in the afternoons. Bonnie and Frank smile at each other with affection.

This is how ALL children should be treated. Follow the child and teach to where they're at. Unfortunately today's classrooms and the school system don't really allow for that.
It's not, actually. Look up John von Neumann to see an example of how you should treat gifted children. They need to grow up with kids their own age, otherwise they'll grow up to be very socially awkward.
It's a bad idea in general to put them into a public college early, where they'll never fit in. Better to homeschool and provide books to motivate them to self-learn. Again, look up John Von Neumann to see the quintessential example.

😮😮Grandma traded her grandchild for the chance of being important in the mathematical field. Thankfully, Frank was able to find a solution that gives his niece the education she needs AND the chance to be a little girl. Great movie❤❤
Grandma was only interested in her when she discovered her gift. She wanted the accolades and the proofs. When she had her daughters in her hand, she longer needed the granddaughter.
I was honestly hoping that Frank published the work in his sister's name woth the daughter getting all funds or whatever it produced. Than habe him immediately turn around and trade it to Evelyn to get the little girl back. She takes the paper he gets his neice and Evelgn doesn't get ANY credit for the work.
I love how gifted kids are portrayed in this movie. Yes, she's smart, but she's also just like every other girl her age, and there's nothing wrong or weird about that. Allow them to express themselves, but also let them be kids. I just love that.

Yes but in all honesty it’s not realistic a child who can skip a grade or two will act like anyother but the kind like her who can do college or more advanced level math tend to have problems is not the right word but are mental differences they usaly have a problem with empathy and understanding

Finishing that call showed exactly what mattered to her, as she would have left it to be published after her death if she really felt guilt. Getting credit was ultimately all that mattered to her.

The truth is she couldn’t hack it as a mathematician and she used her kids intelligence for validation to try and prove her own worth. And killed her daughter on the inside in the process

Don't feel bad....the instructor in this scene (Jordan Ellenberg the actor's name, and I just found this out and so may late to the party if anyone else brought it up below) is a real life child prodigy, though maybe at a bit older than the girl in the movie. Per wiki, he scored a perfect 800 on the math portion of the SAT at age 12, and was taking honors calculus classes at U of Maryland in the eighth grade. I think it's pretty cool to cast a real-life child prodigy as a cameo in a movie about a child prodigy.....

School is part of childhood, and university isn't aimed at children. Just because they can, doesn't mean they should. You might want to look into the psychological effects of raising a genius in a scholastic setting as opposed to a modified standard one. You likely won't be happy with the answers you find, but doing proper research will also give you the proof needed to make clear why and how and all that.
@@arielfetters5662 as someone who was gifted growing up, I cried every night being in regular school. I still to this day being 17 can’t relate to other kids. I would rather have been put in a advanced program instead of being in a public school system
What I loved about Frank and Evelyn's confrontation is how he had this silver bullet the whole time, but held back out of respect of his sister's wishes and clearly a desire to avoid hurt his mother. Even in this scene, he seems sad about having to tell her this, despite how ruthless she was in court, how she lied to him about the deal and sold Fred, Mary's one friend, all while he had to give her up, which clearly killed him. And even at the end, he is empathetic to her pain and tries to offer her some comfort by saying how Diane didn't always think things through.
That being said, it was very satisfying to see the grandmother realize just how much her daughter resented and probably even hated her for all her manipulations, helicopter parenting and need for absolute control. She also can't lie to others and herself about prioritizing Mary's well being over her own ambitions, which is especially poignant if you see the delated scene where Frank calls her out for her narcissism and admits to pitying her.
Evelyn was a narcissistic psychopath. She never loved her daughter or her granddaughter. She cried not because of guilt but because she obtained what she always wanted.
The movie is absolute, and Makenna grace is just such a gifted actress.
Chris and McKenna's interviews promoting this movie are really sweet. You could tell they developed a real love for each other. The scene before this one where she's hitting him were really tough for her I guess because she wouldn't harm a fly. Chris really wanted her to swing away and make it convincing.
Even if she's gifted, she still needs the gift of love and acceptance in her own age level
Maybe but there are a lot of other things she needs first and she can always be in contact with children outside of school. The changes is that she can't really communicate with them because they aren't at the same level
My sister got straight A's all through high school, she had the 10th highest GPA in a class of a few hundred but she spent almost all her time studying and had very few friends. Now as an adult she struggles to interact with people and she has not been able to get a decent paying job despite having a degree from UC Davis and being the smartest person I know. Frankly I can understand why she doesn't have many friends she can't understand viewpoints other than her own and when you try and get her to compromise she just gets mad and won't talk to you. There is so much more to childhood than just getting good grades and doing well on tests and I'm so glad the father is giving his daughter a childhood. I think our society puts too much pressure on young people to excell in school, you shouldn't have to spend all you're time studying to get into the best colleges. Kids need time to play with other kids and try different hobbies/figure out what they like to do and don't like to do. I won't ever be a father because the high cost of living makes it too hard to raise a family and this country is falling apart so fast I don't think my kid would have a good future but if I did have a gifted child this is how I would raise them.
Your sister might be on the Spectrum. Many people with Aspergers or Autism are absolutely brilliant but their social skills are those of a pickle

Lovely thoughtful film.
Just because she is more gifted and smarter than most adult, doesn't mean she can't have a normal life and be a kid.
No one but her uncle had taken a curtacy of her needs, focused solely on her talents and their chances to be famous.
You can be the smartest child in the world and so totally alone but if you have friends that makes the loneliness so much more bearable.
This is one of my favorite films

To be gifted is an extremely difficult thing, way more painful than "normal" people may think. This movie is about an extreme case, but there are millions of no so extreme cases of gifted people not well detected, not well treated, ignored, insulted, deceped, frustated, scared,... To have a brain different to others separates you from the normal people. Be able to feel love, pain, fear, anguist, frustration,... to the limit of imaginable is undescribable. To be gifted is not a gift.

I wish we had good mixed-level programs for gifted kids. Let them race ahead where they can, and still play with their emotional and physical peers. This is coming from a 180 IQ high school dropout, so first hand experience of what happens when we fail.
I wish we could get away from the factory model schools that treats all the kids as the same widget.

What good is it if a person who does not know his own language well or does not know the history of the country he lives in, knows mathematics.*

@@dee6128 debateable. The one who does not learn from history is doomed to repeat it. Gotta know it to learn from it. Also it depends on what you are going to do with your future. We are not talking about elementary mathematics here. We are talking about exchanging a college mathematics bsc for basic knowledge in all other aspects. Including english, a secondary language which is absolutely important in an international world and market, economics, ethics (where you learn more how to debate than actual ethics), basic science etc. Math is sure as hell the most important foundation for most topics but it isn't more important not more helpful than other subhects. Especially not on college level which we are talking about here

@@Anne-ws5jh Yes it is. But in the movie she had a strange grandmother who at first said you were only studying at university. Also, her uncle wanted to her go to regular elemenrary school, but the purpose here was to get normal friends and adapt to the social environment. But I meant that a normal school has more than these. I mean, there is a lot to be learned except socializing. General culture, language, history, geography, chemistry, psychology, sociology and many things. I think someone who doesn't know anything about these looks like an alien who just arrived in the world😂

@Christopher Bingham I can definitely see your point of view here, it’s worth mentioning however that this is still a movie and there are not many children as gifted as this young girl in the movie here. When there are children that are more advanced than other students at school it can be decided on many different factors, if a child is brought up by lazy parenting that do not teach their kids to be doing their schoolwork on time or reading, writing many different factors that help kids learn. Sure there is much research put in to see if intelligence is inherited, but bottom line is that a kid will not know something, or be capable of doing something unless he or she has been taught and learns.

2024: I love how, at the end of the movie, Frank introduces her to metaphysics, a lovely intellectual link to Mary's question about the existence of God. It is a perfect counterpoint to balance her mathematical genius with the complexities of the human condition.

Having a talent is one thing. It becomes a gift when it benefits you and those around you. If your talent drives people away, has them treating you in ways that isolate you... it's not a gift. Your talent becomes a curse.
The worth of a talent is dictated by context, by the life we live with it. So no friendship, no parent, no romance is ever 'meaningless' in the context of talent. They are literally what define the meaning of it.

I just noticed that Chris Evans and the teacher at the end (who is also a comedian) were together in real life. They had a great relationship and he said that she always knew how to make him laugh and smile but they break up because of the pression of the fans . They keep saying she wasn't pretty or great enough for him and we're quite hard on her harassing her with messages on social and private etc... And sometimes in public . They ended up after not that long together because mentally that was awful for her and she was really getting depress and he didn't want her to be treated that way anymore by his fans but couldn't really do anything about it. Besides their relationship were still pretty new and they weren't ready for something like that. Apparently it is one of the reasons actors and actresses like and work hard to keep their relationship secret until they have been long enough and secure in their relationship to make it official and be able the handle any kind of public reactions. That sad that kind of toxicity that the public and even more so some fans can do. At least the two exes are still in good terms and good friends. And both married I think.
