Great vid mate. Really good overview. I've actually been enjoying these lenses more than I thought I would to be fair. They definitely don't have wild character like Atlas, but maybe that's not such a bad thing as you could probably get away with using them across a wider variety of projects. Funky anamorphicness is lush, but niche. The Remus do look very interesting. Potentially a middle ground between Saturn and Mercury, 'character' wise. Nice job!
@@EdProsser yeah I’ve got a set I’ve used on other Sirui anamorphics. It’s partly why I prefer spherical lenses. I hope you get to try the Athena’s, 30cm minimum on the 35mm, much better! 🙂
Amazing work as always Ed! I was particularly interested to see how these little guys worked with the adapter for the 2x squeeze. The pics @11:20 on twilight in the street… 🙌🏻 incredible! I think it’s an especially good pairing with the Komodo for handheld because of its global shutter. On my S5iix handheld with Venus lenses and the adapter I have to hold my breath and stay still to avoid ‘jello’. No such difficulties with the Red’s global shutter. Really lovely!
Yes that's why I decided to test these on my Komodo, I find the LUMIX S5iix a bit awkward for anamorphic, tend to stick it in APS-C anyway and the form factor makes it a bit awkward. Hi, I was thinking about buying the lumix s5sx specifically for anamorphic and found your comment about anamorphic on the lumix. Can you tell me any issue you see using these lenses with the lumix s52x?
The S5iix is great for anamorphic, but I find the read out speed of the sensor, especially in open gate to be quite slow. So I prefer to shoot in aps-c mode on the LUMIX cams as this renders really nice motion. Generally I think these are some of the best mirrorlesa cams to shoot anamorphic on

Great video as always! We always skip the mobility part when it comes to lenses but only when you have limited space you understand the need for a small lens. :)) At 0:30 it reminds me of how bad the lights are in Italy. Even with a global shutter (on red) I see there are still issues with them, at least you don't get the banding. :))
So the slow mo stuff was shot in 40fps which is what causes the flicker as the lights would probably be 50hz so cam shutter and light frequency will be out of sync. when you got flicker what frame rate / shutter were you shooting?

Great review that goes over a lot the others don't! Do you think there is a need/place for using the diopters AND the 1.25x together? My gut tells me yes for consistency of the squeeze factor, but you may think otherwise...
Yes of course and it works well in the same way as using them on the lenses as they are. I actually had a set of larger diopters bought when I reviewed the 1.8x great Joy lenses (82mm filter I think). So they fit well with the 1.25x adapter. They will work just as well with the adapter and I also used these when testing the Blazar Nero 1.5x adapter.
Ed, thanks for the great review. I have the Saturn 35mm on my Sony FF camera, also the diopters (+1, +2 and +4). I'm thinking of expanding the set. In your opinion, do 50mm and 75mm make sense in my combination? I often struggle when focal lengths are so close together... Thank you and keep up the good work!
Wouldn't the adapter make my saturn with neutral flares turn into blue? The adapter is blue flare ? Also do you think the Saturn 75mm will be too tight on aps-c sensor for music videos ?
Thanks Ed. From using the komodo for a few months now ive noticed for low light you dont really have a choice but to go down to 1.4 f stop and set the iso to 400 ish. If you are on a 2.8 and iso 400 the monitor is so dark that you cant see what ur doing and the image is also very noisy. So i guess for low light u will need a speed booster on any anamorphic or most cinema lenses.
It's definitely not a low light beast! But I've got usable results at 1000, but yes generally shooting 400 iso in darker scenes is the cleanest way to go. Noise reduction does work well too. But I was shooting at F4 on the 2x adapter which was really pushing it!
I feel great about it if it looks good! Haven't tried scatter yet, but definitely capturing a clean image and giving yourself options in post is a nice way of working. Sometimes obviously you just want to get the look nailed in camera
After having bought this set of lenses (and the 1.25x adapter), I have a question for you - do you have issues with the adapter and 35mm combo? I am finding that I can see the inner edge of the 1.25x adapter in my frame when using the 35mm... this is made even worse when I change focus on either part, and MUCH worse is a diopter is attached.,,
It'll depend on your sensor size and acquisition aspect ratio, but on FF on the 35mm you'll generally get vignetting. When I shot with it on my LUMIX S5iix I shot in APS-C mode.
Am i the only one who loves "messed up" lenses? I love vingetting, sharpness fall off. The sharper the lens the more boring i find them. Not only that but im tossing diffusion filters on them. I just think its more dream like. Personal opinion.
I think it depends on the project and requirements! I think a vast majority of people love the characteristics you do, but unfortunately not every project calls for them. These aren't the most interesting anamorphics completely agree, but they're also tiny and affordable... The ATLAS Orion's are probably closer to what you'd want, but they're HUGE and expensive.
@@EdProsser yeah, not into expensive. I'd rather get 20 $100 lenses. Love my Helios and Jupiter collection. Have some Zeiss and takumar. Love my mamiya/sekor 55mm I got for $20. Now that I got that anamorphic adapter all my spherical can be adapted if I wanted. Never thought to put that on the sirui anamorphic for 2x squeeze. That will be cool. Add in some black or white mist filters, diopters. All my lenses are stepped up to 82mm. So just got 82mm diopters. But back to my original point, clean lenses don't give me inspiration, the weird ones do.
Can you explain the benefit of having the 2x adapter instead of using the lens without? Stunning colour grading, the footage looks amazing pal. I'm just trying to understand what you actually get by using the 2x adapter. Thanks bud
You get a more stretch / de-squeeze so you're enhancing the anamorphic look / characteristics - given these lenses are quite sharp and clean that could be quite appealing to some.
The DZO Pavos? I've not shot on them, but I think they look a lot more interesting! They're only Super 35 and 2x anamorphic so not super comparable... They'll give you a more classic anamorphic look than these, but they're a lot more expensive and larger.
@@cruisechill1813 yes quite hard to compare as different types of lenses and image quality is very subjective... The Sirui are very clean and sharp. The Vespids are also very sharp but less clean (maybe?). Obviously Vespids don't flare in the same way and have better close focus and more focal lengths. Also avail in EF / Pl
Hi Ed! If you had to choose (for the time being) between the 35mm or 50mm (or even the 75mm) which would you choose? I’m looking to pick up one very soon and eventually pair it with a second but for the moment, just one. Is the 50mm to tight for some indoor locations? Ex. Filming in a gym, in a church, sunroom inside a home, etc.
What are you shooting on, full frame or S35? I'd probably go with the 50, but it depends how you like to shoot. The 35 is wide and the lack of good close focus means it's difficult to use as an all purpose lens
@@EdProsser Actually, I will be picking up two right off the rip. And complete the set down the road a bit. I was thinking of the 35mm and the 75mm but I’m afraid I’ll be missing something special with the 50mm… I’m also indecisive and probably thinking about this too much. Anyways, I appreciate your input and appreciate your videos! Keep up the awesome work!
Hahaha so specific on the location! I haven't shot on the Nanomorph primes, but maybe they have a better close focus than the Sirui? But maybe I'd opt for the Sirui as it has a bit more squeeze...
@@EdProsser lolol, yeah I tried to paint a picture but not sure how that applied to the question in hindsight. so I meant the 35mm nanomorph for 35 sensor compared to 35mm saturn which I believe is FF? I know Komodo is s35, so in theory the Laowa nanomorphic seems like the easy answer, but I'm curious if one felt easier to run and gun / grade than the other?
Nice video. Well put together. I would say for me I will pass on these as I can’t see that characteristic waterfall bokeh which is the whole point of anamorphic for me. I was expecting to see it with the adapter to bring it to 2x but even then it looked practically spherical to me. The Blazar 1.5x looks much more interesting. I plan to get those & pair then either their 1.33x adapter for 2x.. 👌🏿💥👍🏿 Thanks for posting.
Yeah I think there are two camps of lens addicts the clean, modern fans and the grungey character fans (I'm with you) - the only issue I can see with the 1.5x Remus + adapter is that they don't look super clean or sharp to begin with so I'm guessing you'll have to stop down a lot when adding an adapter to get acceptable results.
@@EdProsser yes agree with you, I prefer the dirtier imperfect look. Well I’ll investigate their 1.33x and if no good I’ll just have to get another from someone else 👍🏿. Fantastic we have the options these days though..
@@EdProsser I have the Venus line but the size, weight and non uniform squeeze factor is a bit annoying. I’ll try to find some comparison reviews. Thanks!
I have the 35 and while it is extremely sharp, I often wish it had more character. Then along comes the Remus lenses. They have the character I desire but are so unsharp, they almost appear out of focus. I wish there was a cheap lens set that sits somewhere in the middle of the two. Fairly sharp but with lots of character. I guess we can't have it all at this price point.
I need to see more from the Remus seems like the only sent a few pre-production units out and some of those soft images may have been shimming issues, who knows. The Remus look good but I'd rather pay a bit more for slightly better performing glass. I think most people would - keen to see more from them once people start shooting with them, but feels like a missed opportunity if they're not quite there.
No competition to the Remus? I'm not totally sold on the Blazar Remus lenses, and this is coming from someone who likes character and grunge in a lens. There's been so little sample footage shown from them it doesn't fill me with confidence - I wouldn't drop money on them until more people have reported back on using them. They look close but not close enough to justify buying. Quietly interested to find out how people rate them
I guess it's yet to be determined how sharp the Remus will be - some have suggested that the early sample footage had shimming issues - so might not be reflective of the actual lens... It's disappointing they've not really engaged with the community to send out samples and get more feedback / sample footage out there - I wouldn't feel confident pre-ordering those lenses from what I've seen . I'll be eagerly paying attention to what the early adopters have to report back on when they get these lenses next year.

35, 50 and 75 are all fairly far apart in terms of look so should go well together, especially on FF where the 35 feels very wide!
Wouldn't the adapter make my saturn with neutral flares turn into blue? The adapter is blue flare ? Also do you think the Saturn 75mm will be too tight on aps-c sensor for music videos ?
It didn't seem to do this on mine, I've found the flaring in the adapter very subtle so the lens flaring still comes through nicely
How do you feel about adding diffusion in post vs using physical filters?
@@EdProsser gotcha. Yeah using my FX6 in FF mode, so that makes sense. Thanks!
Great!
@@EdProsser so the video footage appears wider again? Your channel is awesome, never come across it which is odd. I just subbed
What are your honest thoughts on these lenses vs the DZOs?
The DZO Pavos? I've not shot on them, but I think they look a lot more interesting! They're only Super 35 and 2x anamorphic so not super comparable... They'll give you a more classic anamorphic look than these, but they're a lot more expensive and larger.
I meant the vespids. I know its quite hard to compare the two but for image quality how do they compare?
@@EdProssermy apologies, I am shooting on a FF Sony FX3 and I have an FX30 as my secondary.
Beautiful locations!
The model is beautiful too 😘
If you had to choose between this Sirui 35mm 1.6 or Laowa Nanomorph 35 on Komodo for short film shot in NYC which would you prefer?
@@jamescasteel8990 I haven't shot on the Nanomorph primes. Only on their zoom lenses. I think they're both fairly similar probably?
I wonder what kind of results you can get out of these lenses if you use the laowa 1.33x adapter on the front of these
I guess just a bit more squeeze and a wide frame that you'd probably have to crop. If I get the adapter in at some point I'll give it a go!
which of the three did you like best?
On the Komodo I found myself using the 50mm the most - seemed like the most versatile focal length
Great video and...that is my city! Hope you loved Torino.
My partner is from Torino so we go a lot - I love it!
How do they compare to Sirui’s other full frame anamorphic lineup? Aside from weight and form factor, are there any major differences?
I haven't shot with the other Sirui lenses people seem to prefer the larger 1.6x Venus line so I assume there are some differences
@@EdProsser I have the Venus line but the size, weight and non uniform squeeze factor is a bit annoying. I’ll try to find some comparison reviews. Thanks!
Is there a review somewhere that shows what the footage looks like before being squeezed?
You could rip / download the footage and just squeeze it if you want to see what it might look like... Is there a reason why you'd want to see it?
@@EdProsser I’m just curious what I’d be looking at live while I shoot and how different it would be to frame.
@ddespair just take any frame and squeeze horizontal by 1.6x. When you should you usually desqueeze on your monitor to preview your frame properly
Great Review, but after Blazar released the Remus Set I do not see any competition for them anymore.
Quietly interested to find out how people rate them
Blazar lenses ar so soft compared to sirui. When you strat adding filters it's even softer. Great if you want your 6k camera to look like 720p
I can recognize my city, Turin, behind the girl! Were you on a trip or do you live here?
My partner (the girl) is from Turin so we go often to visit her family.
@@EdProsser great! Maybe we'll meet there 😂
Is Blazar 1.5 better?
Define better? Remus certainly have more character, more interesting look. The flaring is a bit more aggressive on the Remus as well I think
@@EdProsser yes , Ive already found the answer. I found Remus better cuz it has character, more interesting look.
Dude I just watched this for the lens review (wicked by the way), but I noticed the b-roll in Turin and that big hall/gardens place which I've forgotten the name of. I literally uploaded a video from that exact spot in September 😅 what a ridiculously small world! If you watch my recent Turin videos you'll notice I literally shot in the exact same spots 😂🎬
Haha just checked it out! Amazing work, my partner is from Turin so we visit a few times a year, first time visiting those gardens though!
hehe, world ending. i sincerely appreciate your indepth reviews/observations. so much easier to understand with all the examples. cheers.
thanks man - try to fill it up with sample footage rather than forcing you to stare at my ugly mug.
I wish we had anamorphics with vintagey distortion but at the sirui price point.
Blazar Remus!
@@EdProsser holy crap
@@KnapfordMaster98 they're also about to release some crazy looking 2x budget Anamorphics, they will look wild
@@EdProsser I'll be sure to keep an eye on them, thanks!
if ed has a 100000 fans, then im one of them
if ed has just one fan, then im him
if ed has no fans that means im dead
Don't die, I need all the fans I can get!!
For me they look like they have a pincushion distortion instead of an barrel distortion..
kind a weird and I don't like the look..but as you said..its a matter of taste!
Yes - mention this in the review, it can be corrected quite easily tho. But on the 35 on FF it's pretty severe.
True..I just had a quick look the first couple of minutes..didn´t get to the sharpness and distortion part the first time 😬
Tanks for your video ;)!... cheers@@EdProsser
I wish this didn't have an annoying music bed all the way through it. Why is it there?
I wanted it to be
@@EdProsser - well, that is a reason, but the annoying music thing in so many videos is just ........ annoying. You give really good advice, the music doesn't add to it.
@@EdProsser - It distracts from the good info and serves no purpose. But it's your clip.
@@JaywalkingTheWorld Some people will like it, and some people will hate it, I guess you can't go through life trying to please every single person. I hear your feedback though, I am always reviewing how I edit and present my vids.
@@EdProsser To be honest the background music was the best piece of this video for me. What's the title of the very first song if you don't mind me asking?
