    Interesting video. I believe the reason the focus goes beyond infinity is to allow for expansion due to temperature changes. I’ve found the same using some manual focus lenses like my tilt shift.

    I'm so glad you shoot R5. I do too and your footage is the best on TH-cam.

    The biggest CON for me is the need of follow focus addon to my Gimbal, because you cannot shoot handheld (IBIS causing weard warping at the edges with this lense) and the lense doesn't have an AF.

      Yup it’s not ideal to use hand help. Love it on a gimbal though!

    Great looking Videos from This Lens. The Aspectratio you show is not 2.4:1 its 2.8:1 , I guess because of the 16:9 Sensor the R5 has. For 2.4:1 you have to cut of the Edges a little bit.

    Definitely looks stunning, been considering an anamorphic lens to take my vlogs to the next level and this seems amazing 🔥🏖️🌆😊

    The beach scene looks like where the movie Old (2021) was shot, but on imdb the filming location is listed as "Playa El Valle, Samana, Dominican Republic".

    I've had this lens for months on a whim, I was curious to use it on the Canon R5. I'm happy with the results, but it's not really the lens I'd use for videos, tutorials, or blogs. I would use this lens if you like a result similar to but not the same as cinema or short film. I think it is complicated for oneself to focus, frame etc. In film shooting, anamorphic lenses and neutral profiles are used, to later do the developing and editing. For example, there is a team of people who are dedicated solely to focus and sharpness during shooting and after shooting.
    It is normal for the focus to go beyond the infinity mark, many lenses have this feature and it is to allow for expansion due to temperature.
    There are several tutorials on this lens and in particular with R5. The only criticism I would make would be its high price in my opinion and that I wouldn't use it for blogging videos.
    With a non-anamorphic lens you can do film-like development using luts and it is more comfortable.👍

    There's something weird w/the desqueeze here, the distortion is highly visible and even-thou the picture is great it makes it look not that GREAT having these caved in left and right sides. JW

    Question, when you are focusing manually, do the manual focus tools work in the R5, that is, the manual focus guide box or the manual colour focus peaking. Cheers.

    Have you tried using handheld but turn off the IS completely and stabilize in post? I'm curious how much you can recover and at least the woobles won't be a problem.

    Hey Todd. Thank you so much for this video. What aspekt ratio do you get on the R5 16:9 sensor? Did you crop it to 2.40:1?

    • @devilsgunner99
      @devilsgunner99 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I crop mine to 2.4:1. on a 16x9 sensor you lose 8 percent on each side but whew it looks great

    It’s a shame the ibis on the r5 doesn’t work well with this lens, is it that bad as in unusable?

    • @dominey
      @dominey  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think it depends on how aggressive you are with camera movements when shooting handheld. Slow, deliberate shots with a gimbal would probably be fine but I wouldn’t want to do more than that.

    • @MrMolotov69
      @MrMolotov69 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@dominey so you would say there is no chance in using this lens handheld with ibis even if you try and be still?

    • @dominey
      @dominey  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@MrMolotov69 If you intentionally want a little bit of wobble so it doesn't look static, it should be okay. If not, you could always stabilize it in post using Warp Stabilizer or Video AI from Topaz. The lens more or less works like other RF lenses that don't have optical IS and rely on in-body IS. If you have a lens like that, maybe try shooting some video as you intend to with it.

    • @MrMolotov69
      @MrMolotov69 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@dominey does the ibis stabilise the lens like a 35mm or a 22mm?

    • @dominey
      @dominey  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@MrMolotov69 I was curious to know so I just did a quick test holding an R6 still. Because the camera doesn't recognize the lens, you assign a focal length in the IBIS settings. Tried 35mm, and there was noticeable jello warping. Tried 22mm, and the effect was less noticeable. I think the best option if you want to shoot handheld with this would be turning off IBIS and using a gimbal.

    Is anyone else bothered by the obvious distortion on the sides of the de-squeezed footage?

  • @thatchinaboi1
    @thatchinaboi1 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Pin cushion distoriton is terrible. You should correct it in post.

    • @ziggybadans
      @ziggybadans 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Why? It's reviewing the lens, it should accurately show all its distortions. Plus, some people may want the pincushion effect for whatever they're shooting.

  • @KC-in9px

    Perhaps you could do a video on how to simulate an anamorphic look using a wide angle lens and adding black bars in editing. Unfortunately we don't all have budgets for a $1300+ lens. (I sure don't anyway)

    • @KC-in9px
      @KC-in9px ปีที่แล้ว

      @davidcrableI have no idea what you mean by compression? Lol

    • @waynosfotoscameras
      @waynosfotoscameras 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @KC-in9px anamorphic look is completely different to circular lenses. The bokeh is like cats eyes and the out of focus area is gooey and distorted. You also get the colour flares. You can't replicate the look as you are suggesting with a normal lens.

  • @FIREDICK666
    @FIREDICK666 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks for the quick and easy explanation about what anamorphic lenses are. Have you experienced any defference how grainy/noisy footage gets effected after de-sqeezing the material? I mean, does the grain get more vertical? Does it look different? The actual grain is formed by the sensor right? So the captured material would be ”normal noise”- but after sqeezing it it probably makes it wider? I’m not afraid of noise and grain. I kind of like it and would like to see if there is a difference

    Lucky for me I got to the part where you said 'stills' will not work. I'm a still shooter but love the anamorphic 'look'. I guess LR with be busy stitching going forward. Thanks for the entertainment.
