The other main reason was the system change, this happened on every sequel, it's the reason why most mvc2 players didn't move on to UMVC3 From the old guard we got justin,.combo, yipes and finally clockwork, no rowtron, no sandford,.no duc, no mike.z, many names lost.
You said you're self it's only "one of" the reasons. This will definitely start a resurgence but don't expect it to bring this game back from the dead.
