Speaking as a Honolulu resident and a longtime frequent flyer of Hawaiian Airlines, I was not very surprised that they made the switch back to Boeing. Their widebody fleet was once composed of B767s before they switched to the A330-200. The unfortunate situation with the A350-800 was the likely catalyst for the return to Boeing. I'll be interested in seeing their choice to replace the B717 as the mainstay of the airline's interisland fleet. They've been real workhorses but are all about 20+ years old.
The Boeing 717 is a Greyhound bus with wings. They're probably good for the airline, but a crappy flying experience. But I guess since interisland flights are short, it doesn't matter. I can fly to OGG from HNL in less time than it takes me to drive from Pearlridge to Waikiki.
the CEO at a luncheon pre-pandemic I attended and asked him a question regarding Asian expansion since they will not do any special Flight Freedoms to connect further out and will only do routes from Hawaii to XXX. he did mention that same statement about the Asian markets prefer the B787 variants with seat configurations over the A330 and the B787 being that fuel efficient mid-size wide body to achieve new routes. a former marketing employee told me that they were studying Hong Kong as a possible route but this was also pre-pandemic. one of the pilots on my LV trip said he is expecting the first B787 spring 23 or summer 23 and training to be ramped up. Also the Amazon contract to fly a330 that is different since Amazon will be footing the bill on the leasing of the A330's and are just contracting HA to handle the fleet for their deliveries since they are also building that new Amazon Warehouse they purchased land at Sand Island which is next to the harbor and airport. unfortunately i missed the most recent CEO Luncheon since I was in Seattle or maybe it was Japan. hopefully I can attend the next one they have.
They picked a great plane in the A330 & RR Trent 700 which I assume did really well for them, so you can commiserate with Airbus having lost out at Hawaiian, but in choosing B787 & GEnx I think it fair to suggest they can`t go wrong with that combo, it should do equally well for them.
I'm excited about the 787 over the A330 neo. Bottom line, these will be long haul flights and the 787 has better cabin pressure, humidity and larger windows, all offering a better long haul experience. Hopefully the greater range will allow Hawaiian to create new routes including Melbourne, Australia, Singapore or Bangkok and possibly even Europe. I live in Hawaii...we are excited. This is not a Boeing vs Airbus thing...I really like the A321s' in the Hawaiian fleet.
Comparing the 787 with 2 AB types... One never made it off the drawing board, the other, making them regret it did... A thousand 787 9's sold vs a handful of 330 8's... Airbus making the A330neo was not a mistake. That aircraft was designed and built for a fraction of the cost it would take for a clean sheet design. It may not be a sales success, but for the amount of money that went in to its development, it didn't matter to Airbus. That's why they can afford to sell it at such a low price.
I wouldn't be surprised if the A330neo is more profitable than the 787, yes the NEO has sold much less aircraft than the 787 but the A330neo cost less to develop and Boeing has spent billions of dollars, not just on development and research but on fixing the many issues the 787 has had since it's certification.

@@gregsmith3410 Yes, that's true. We are seeing more selection of the 787/350 for more established carriers. However, carriers in the developing world are opting for the 330NEO, especially in Africa and Asia. The low development cost (compared to the 787/350) translates to low sales price which is enticing for carriers with less cash flow. As you said, its success remains to be seen. Bottom line, I disagree with cvt-4u267 where they suggested the 330neo was a mistake.
HA is my go to airline traveling between LA and Tokyo. However, their current Airbus 1st class configuration could be improved. In comes, the new Boeing 787. As a frequent flyer of HA, I think the Dreamliners business class, "Leihoku," is just right for me. As a native Hawaiian kid, I appreciate the thought that went into the design of the cabins. Congrats to HA! 🥰
I think the 787-9 is an excellent airplane, though the A350-900, or 1000 are great airplanes also. It could've been a "mixed" bag of an order between the two manufacturers for Hawaiian, but you would have to consider the costly pilot training on the different types. I think however, this is a great order from Boeing for Hawaiian Airlines anyway.
I’ve always wanted to fly on a 787 but much of the flying I do is on Hawaiian and United 777s or 737s. With this addition to the fleet, I think it will make my aviation heart very happy
It makes me wonder now that Hawaiian has a contract with Amazon to fly a330 freighters….the 330 NEO might have been a better option in keeping their overall costs down with crews and maintenance
Hawaiian has 24 A330-200’s in its fleet, so costs are already solid across the board as everyone who needs to be is already trained on them. The increase in maintenance and training costs will come when the 787’s arrive, however they will be offset because of the deal they got for the planes, along with their overall efficiency.
Hawaiian airlines originally had 767s. They then switched to the a330. The 787 is a direct replacement of both of those airplanes. The a350 is bigger & more in between a 767 & 777. They went with the 787 bc it better suits their fleet. Also a330 is old technology. The 787 & a350 are 21st century airplanes.
I firmly believe the order for the 787-900’s are PERFECT for the airline. As a native to Hawai’i and a frequent flyer of HAL, I can say many people here in our islands do NOT like the A330’s, including the pilots. Many of my friends and ʻōhana also don’t like the A321’s they just acquired. I can’t wait to fly on the Dreamliner! I believe it was the smartest move made by Hawaiian.
Neither the A350-900 or 787-8 met their requirements. The A359 was too big. They originally wanted the A350-800 and when that program was cancelled the order was converted to the A330-800 which was not what they really wanted at all. The 788 was too small, and the 789 was perfect.
Whatever Hawaiian Air chooses to buy, they make that choice for their business needs. Now it’s up to Boeing to manufacture the 787 Dreamliners ordered by Hawaiian Air correctly with the best quality control and safety. The air passenger market doesn’t want a repeat of what happened to the 787 Dreamliners when Japan’s All Nippon Airways started operating them.
The A330 is an older airframe/wings/aerodynamics. The 787 is lighter and more efficient. The 787 has better credibility with the flying public. I bet HAL was dissatisfied with Airbus’s support too. Last time we fly with HAL, the Airbus flights were 2,3 and 12 hours delayed taking off for the 3 outbound flights my family flew.
The only real advantage the 787 has is the better first class options, with the wider fuselage, which I suspect was the main reason for switch from A330 800 to 787 so Hawaiian can compete better in the high end sector
Its also more efficient than the A330neo and will have a higher resale value. Those were the main reasons as well. The cabin layout is up to the airline. Delta for example pretty much has the same cabins in its Boeing and Airbus aircraft, with the seat width being the only real difference. The 787 cabin is actually only 9 inches wider than the A330.
@@dmcr9525 the only efficiency Advantages 787 would have for Hawaiian is in the long range services & they are mostly medium haul routes they operate. The A330neo, I believe, is a better fit for Hawaiian, as they already operate ceos. Introducing a new type will cost them hugely ,especially for a small order like 12 units, effectively nullifying any fuel efficiency advantages. The A330 also has a better dispatch reliability fleet wide than 787s with its myriad of issues
@@michaelosgood9876 Thats just the the thing, the plan all along was to introduce a new type, so the commonality was really out the window to begin with. The A350-800 was the original plan which only has a common flight deck which would still require some minor training. As for the 787, it actually is quite efficient on short and medium-haul trips as seen with the Japanese, Chinese, and US carriers such as American and United. The 787's also cost less than the A330neo, so there is a savings per unit price as well as being more fuel efficient. The 787 also has a better resale value, and as far as dispatch reliability, the 787 is at a solid 99.4%. This also was a major decision as why they decided to move from RR to GE for the power-plants as may issues were seen on the RR, and the GEnx is also a bit more efficient, and has a dispatch reliability rate of 99.96%. The 787 issues have not been big enough to ground entire fleets with the exception of introduction into service as well as RR Trent issues.
Thank you for sharing this story. I do wonder if Hawaiian Airlines really wanted to have more of the other aircraft maker, Boeing? They will have to maintain more of those aircraft as the orders are made. I do like their current fleet of the Airbus 330s that fly the long-haul routes. But we will see how the 787s add and feel to their fleet.
I for one would have thought they would have stayed with Airbus. And replaced their aging A330-200's with new A330-NEO's. So going with Boeing was a big shocker too me. Albeit a nice one. As i'm planning a 2 week trip too Honolulu from Boston for my 50th birthday in a couple of years. That said, i know from what i've heard their was a delay in delivery because of the pandemic for the new 787-9 Dreamliners. They've already taken delivery of 2 i believe and will have 3 or 4 more delivered in 2024. With the remainder delivered by either 2026/27. And since i'm flying business class i can't wait too experience that with the 787. I've seen the A330-200 they currently have. And i wasn't that impressed with it. I much prefer the 1-2-1 seat arrangement of the Dreamliner over the current Airbus 2-2-2. I know that's more preferable too couples. But when your single and flying business class you want as much privacy as possible. And thankfully the 787 will deliver that too customers.
They actually never wanted the A330neo at all. Their plans were to replace their ceo's with the A350-800, but Airbus cancelled the program, and converted the order to A330's. Hawaiian could have opted for the dame seating arrangement for the 787, but decided to offer and all new product on the 787.
We fly this route from honolulu to Boston ( round trip) twice a year ,every year since they start the first in April. No other airline but hawaiian have this route nonstop, so we will see how this will play out 😂
They never wanted it. They wanted the A350 or the 787, and once Airbus cancelled the A358 program it put them in a jam. The decided on the 787 because of the fuel efficiency, resale value, and over all wider cabin.
Hawaiian Airlines new CEO as of late 2018 was the former CFO and what is commonly referred to as a bean counter so more than likely Boeing did make the company a financial offer that was irresistible. One need only look at Hawaiian’s stock price since 2018 to see leadership is struggling. Also one of the airlines that has not bounced back since the pandemic and is hemorrhaging money. And has gone from the number one on time airlines to one of the worst. Sad 😢

not really. there is a reason why they never had 777’s and other planes of that size (or larger) The a350 would be too big for Hawaiian’s service demands
@@shahirbey3065 of course they know what's best for them. I just meant that in my opinion the A350, on balance, is a newer/better design imo, so in general I would've liked it more. But if it doesn't fit with them, it doesn't make much sense, that's true.
HA was originally slated to order a350s but airbus convinced HA to go towards the a338s -- but then HA was going to be the only carrier operating the a338s.

Oh ,well you newlywed have to wait until you are in Hawaii before your honeymoon will start, unless you enjoy having a third wheel watching you with a 3-3-3 sitting arrangement all the way to Hawaii or spend the extra money and fly first class (get a cheaper hotel room)
One of the only reasons I disliked the 787 is the on the fact they have no personal air vents! I flew the A350 and 787 and one thing about the A350 I like is when it got warm in the plane I could open a vent, unlike the 787!
Thats not on all 787's, and its also up to the Airline if they want that option or not. United 787's for example have them. Some A350's dont have them either.
Personally, I would have stayed with the A330-800. Already operating the -200’s, it would have saved money on operating and maintenance costs, also having that extended range the new CEO mentioned with the 787.
even then the range and capacity would be inferior to that of the 787. Additionally the 787 is cheaper to buy and run compared to the a330neo. So going with the 787 was the better choice.
Your videos are speculative videos that are not based on reality, so even if you watch them, you cannot trust them. You should actually interview the people involved and send out more reliable information. Did you understand?
Seats in the 787 are like the 737. 3-3-3. So you have a middle seat on the outside rows. Just like a 737. 330? 2-4-2. Book the outside seats on the 330 and there's no MIDDLE SEAT!!
Absolutely correct Ken, and with an extra inch width at 18” on the A330, A350 and A380. The 787 was originally an 8 abreast, 777 and even 747 9 a abreast before becoming 10 abreast. 777 is just horrible at 10 abreast and I avoid it like the plague
Not a good decision. They already fly Airbus planes. Easier to train pilots plus they should wait the A330 is getting new amazing features. 787 is older and isn’t going to last long as the Airbus A330. Plus the 787 is having trouble atm.

not really. there is a reason why they never had 777’s and other planes of that size (or larger) The a350 would be too big for Hawaiian’s service demands
I am confused. Did HA order the A330-800 again or no?
No. They Ordered 12 B 787-900’s. First Dreamliner Expected Nov. 2023 !
@@kanielar4756 Oh sweet let’s GO just only few months left!
wow
Then there's the considerations for a potential Hawaiian/Alaska merger . . . . "All Boeing Fleet . . . ."
Hawiian operates the A321neo and will continue to do so where as Alaska will return their A321neos to their lessor.
@@heidirabenau511 that's if the engine issues are ever fixed.
@@heidirabenau511 The A321neo serves my market and I don't like it. As much as I hate cattle class, I might be tempted to try this other airline that flies the ETOPS B737 and see if they're any better.
@@nplus1watches35they are not, only noticeable difference between a321neo and the 737 MAX is that the 737 seats in economy are marginally narrower
Flew them once from Australia to Seattle via Hawaii. Whatever aircraft they choose means little to me as I would never fly them again
No one cares
👍legal
No airbus needed.
Oh ,well you newlywed have to wait until you are in Hawaii before your honeymoon will start, unless you enjoy having a third wheel watching you with a 3-3-3 sitting arrangement all the way to Hawaii or spend the extra money and fly first class (get a cheaper hotel room)
A330 neo just makes better sense for them though. The pilots would have it much easier.
I would've kept Airbus myself
@@wadehiggins1114 of course yoy would have
even then the range and capacity would be inferior to that of the 787. Additionally the 787 is cheaper to buy and run compared to the a330neo. So going with the 787 was the better choice.
@@shahirbey3065 And the 787 offers a far better cabin experience for long haul.
@@davidsilver4339 not at all with the 3-3-3 config at 17” vs A330 2-4-2 at 18”
The Airbus would have been better, but oh well!
Indeed, better at higher seat and operating costs.👌
This is ridiculous. The a330 neo is the 737 Max of Airbus. The 787 is a much more versatile aircraft.
@christopherkozal7987 kindly refrain from posting. You have absolutely no knowledge of anything, couch potato!
@@christopherkozal7987 At least the A330neo hasn't cost Airbus billions of dollars, lost their reputation and charged with fraud unlike Boeing!
But the boeing was better as they went with 787
787 is better
Your videos are speculative videos that are not based on reality, so even if you watch them, you cannot trust them. You should actually interview the people involved and send out more reliable information. Did you understand?
Lol. Will they ever get those 787 delivered. Should have stuck with the A330 neo.
Why stick with the a330neo if it is the inferior choice to the 787?
yes, starting at the end of the year.
With all the hold ups I cannot see how a 787 can be a superior product, Boeing will just have undercut in price the actual superior quality product
Should of stayed with Airbus
Airbus A-350 1000 would have been a better option I feel
Thats an overkill considering Hawaii’s routes lol
@@AverageJoe777 yes.. too big for HAs needs..
Boeing is the best!!!! American made🇺🇸😎👍
Seats in the 787 are like the 737.
2nd
First
Not a good decision. They already fly Airbus planes. Easier to train pilots plus they should wait the A330 is getting new amazing features. 787 is older and isn’t going to last long as the Airbus A330. Plus the 787 is having trouble atm.
It's not a DreamLiner, the proper name is NightMare Liner. Dumb move Hawaiian Air.
it's Screamliner... fyi.......
As long as the aircraft is built in Seatyle not N. Carolina
@@keithfreitas2983 i wish it was...
The most important distinction is that the a330Neo will always get you there, while the troubled 787 NightmareLiner probably will not....
