    My main criticism with "kids movies" is that they tend to not challenge kids. Their narrative is very simple, to the point where it is all taken in without questions. Kids aren't dumb, they just need to learn. Films like this rarely contribute anything noteworthy to that, and tend to treat kids like idiots, instead of building on their potential.
    Citizen Kane is at the other end of the extreme, and wouldn't help, either. Something as simple as the "Lego Movie" does it better, by challenging ideas and concepts in slightly subtle ways, requiring kids to ask themselves a few simple questions, for which they get the answers later in the film.

      I think kids and adults alike should be allowed to have entertainment that is designed for fun, not to challenge them. I see this kinda mindset in the fanfic community alot. People seem to think that there always needs to be a higher level for things to have value. Yes, there should be movies directed at kids that challenge them. Having kids learn through media is important, but I just also think sometimes it's ok to have a movie night where you eat popcorn and laugh at stupid humor and play.
      Play is so important for all ages. I hate that society thinks play is something childish that needs to be outgrown when time and time again it's proven to releave stress and make people happy.
      There's more to life than productivity. It's ok to relax and have fun in a way that's not designed to challenge you.
      Just, mix it in with the other stuff so it's not all you're getting.

      I mean there are plenty of options out there, from new to old. Honestly it’s not worth worrying about what other children enjoy watching. Just worry about your tastes and maybe your own kids (not trying to be rude nor mean). I’m just saying it’s not worth the stress, don’t even bother watching the movie and don’t show them to your own kids. That’s what I do with my own students. Also if the movie is boring or just very crappy they usually loose interest anyways. Also I just straight up tell them. “Eh it’s a boring movie it’s not going be fun, or I don’t have it” lol

    Even if it's just "a harmless fun kids movie" I still think critiques and reviews are a good thing because it keeps the studios from becoming lazy and generic (even if Illumination seems to be past this in all aspects of the word) there is nothing wrong with giving your thoughts on something. I always like to make the argument of: Will kids remember this like we remember our movies? And I really don't think they will. Shrek, Toy Story, How To Train Your Dragon, etc. They are movies that stick with people for a long ass time because they stood out to them, and were original. To the point that many still watch them again as adults. However I highly doubt anyone's going to watch Minions: The Rise of Gru, or Sing, with their mates in ten or twenty years time, with that being the movie they remember loving as a kid.
      I'd even go beyond kids animation and point to some of the newer Starwars and MCU movies. Will they be remembered over time? And the answer is usually no. They're safe. They go for basic entertainment. But that kind of stuff doesn't stick with people. Honestly it's kind of mindless.

    My main problem with Illumination has always been that Despicable Me was a genuinely good movie, maybe even a great one. It's also the only film they've made that didn't feel like it was motivated by, if not cynicism, then a desire to service a market with a product.
    And while there's nothing really _wrong_ with that - animators need to eat, just like everyone else - the sad thing is that they proved that they could do more. But instead of trying they just... Played it safe. Made a product they knew they could sell, and then sold it. Stopped trying to express anything.
    And I can't fathom that the artists behind the films have nothing to express, since you don't bust your ass in a medium like animation because it's easy or glamorous.

    Side Note: They gave the same treatment to Fight Club, replacing the bit where buildings get blown up with an ending text stating that everyone got arrested by the police before they could follow through with their plan) and Tyler Durden (you know, the character who turns out to be merely a figment of the protagonists imagination and not an actual person) was admitted to a mental hospital and later released as cured.

    regarding the voice acting, I honestly felt like Steve Carell stepped up his game when voicing Gru. whether he was happy or angry or terrified, it all felt genuine and it felt like Carell was giving it his all. like, his screams of pain when he was tied to the clock felt real - at least, it did to me.
    while I also agree that we could've used a bit more of the Gru and Wild Knuckles subplot, i thought what we got was juuuust enough to make the relationship endearing. I do wish the final battle wasn't so rushed, but the battle was still a lot of fun. between this movie and Sing 2, I feel like Illumination is getting a bit better. maybe their stories still have that vignette vibe, but their dramatic moments are hitting a bit harder these days imo.

    The thing about the first Despicable Me is that it felt like it had heart, and it’s about parenthood and the loss of trust children get when they don’t have a parental figure they can trust. It shows Gru and the girls learning how to just BE around one another, but it also shows that Gru already is acting as a father figure to many of the minions themselves, which is why when he starts actually parenting the girls, even though flashbacks show him not having a supportive parental figure, he actually does a decent job from the beginning. There’s so much there that they could have brought to the later films, but it’s like with each addition to the franchise that heartbeat grows quieter.

    Okay but a film about a magical Chinese zodiac pendant with supernatural properties could be really cool on it's own too. You could have characters who know what it does and seek to harness its power (either for good or evil purposes), and maybe a protagonist who's sent on a quest to find it and insure that it doesn't fall into the wrong hands.
    A plot twist could be that the supposed 'good guys' who sent the protagonist after the pendant were corrupt, and the script could drop subtle hints to that right from the get-go, but not in a way that makes it painstakingly obvious or in a way that makes the twist feel like a last minute thing for 'shock factor'

    Joking aside I really enjoyed this movie, there were elements that worked quite well. The comedy wasn’t as annoying and it was a treat to hear Steve Carell as Gru as always. The main issue I think is that, the movie doesn’t prioritise Gru’s rise oddly enough he has become the secondary character in his own franchise. Which sucks because the father son bond between him and Wild Knuckle was oddly wholesome and should have been the main drive.

    I get what you mean by Illumination "playing it safe" with their films. They're cute, family friendly and simple. But think about some of the most beloved animated films in the past:
    Beauty and the Beast, Iron Giant, The Land Before Time, The Prince of Egypt, Toy Story, Finding Nemo, Shrek, Kung Fu Panda.
    These were all films that weren't "playing it safe". Rather, they all pushed the boundaries of what their medium was capable of, whether through writing, animation or characters. All the film's above have an artistic level of passion put into them and the people who made them proved time and again the vast potential animation has and continues to show.
    In a few decades, it's a safe bet to think that that the Minions franchise will only be remembered for the memes and bizarre online trends it started but nothing else. While movies like Beauty and the Beast or Iron Giant will be remembered and loved for a long, long time.

    I watched Sing 2 a few nights ago, and I was genuinely surprised by how pretty EVERYTHING looked. Textures, fur, lightning, colors, etc… The Illumination team is definitely talented and know what to do to make a movie good and pretty. But the fact that their movie’s plots often fall short, or the jokes in their movies make it fall flat is upsetting…
    The Clay Calloway character looks SOOO good on the film. And to me it was crazy how everything else also looked pretty good. This studio knows what it can do, but it just refuses to do it. And that sucks…

That would have been a neat wrap around. Should have spent more time with them and growing the villain father character a bit more. Go even deeper and have him sadly pass away during the final battle which in turn is what gives Gru the KICK he needed to defeat the other villains WITH the minions. But ... that would be TOO COMPLICATED for the kiddos I'm sure.

    Something I was upset about with Illumination's Lorax was the fact that they toned down a movie about something dark like greed and pride. The original short movie from the 1972 spent the vast majority of it's film time showing the slow but sure deforestation and then it's results, while in Illumination's Lorax the deforestation is condensed into the span of time How Bad Can I Be took. Speaking of How Bad Can I Be, there was another song that was originally going to be used before it called Biggering, but it was cut because the higher ups deemed it "too dark." Go listen to it, it's a great song and digs more into greed and pride (ironic that it got cut by a greedy corporation) than something like How Bad Can I Be, which I won't lie is a catchy song but also essentially tells the audience that the Onceler is blind to what he is doing to the environment until he full on embraces his actions. Paul Cincero even commented on a video that featured a fanmade storyboard talking about it.
    My point is that Illumination has the tools to make a movie with a solid story that challenges kids with moral dilemmas and provide solutions to them, but instead they opt for what is marketable and easy, something safe and comfortable, which makes me pretty upset all around.

    These movies are mostly about a fun time with or without your children. Where many other children focused movies fail is that they do not consider the elder audience. Very often it is a torture for parens to sit in the children movies - the jokes are so trivial that they are no fun for older persons. It is a widely debated subject in the Despicable Me community that the Minions served Hitler between 1933 to 1945, with some claiming that such events could not have taken place given that the Minions were trapped in an ice cave for a long duration of time. However, some evidence in the Despicable Me universe points toward a possibility that the Minions not only served Hitler and Stalin, but engaged in a brutal civil war that nearly wiped out the species as a whole.
      **Evidence No. 1:** The Minions trapped in the ice cave are NOT the only Minions in the world.
      **Proof:**
      In the Despicable Me and Minions films, we see the Minions interacting with Human society on a rather normal scale. Whether it be going on vacation, joining the French Military, hitch hiking to the villainy convention, wandering through TV studios, getting ice cream and going out in public no one seems to bat an eye to the existence of the Minions. Given that the Minions have been around before the Dinosaurs, its not impossible to assume that there were millions, if not billions of Minions alive on earth given the time they had to spread across the globe. Some possible evidence that there were millions to billions of Minions is how little people react to them in society.
      No one seems to bat an eye to the Minions, implying they've been abundant and around long enough to be completely normalized by Human society. In fact the Minions may have well been completely integrated into human society instead of being viewed as a different species. In our universe, if a few hundred 3 foot half naked lemon Tic-Tacs speaking gibberish appeared in the middle of Times Square, not only would people immediately bat an eye, but all of the nation's three letter organizations would be swiftly mobilized to New York. This isn't the case in the Despicable Me universe.
      **Evidence No. 2:** The Minion species, while very resilient, is NOT immortal due to a severe weakness to biological and chemical attacks.
      **Proof:**
      In the starting paragraph, I mention that the Minions nearly went extinct from a brutal Minion Civil War. While this point may be contradicted by the Minions being able to survive explosions, torture devices, bullets, kinetic impact and many other lethal threats, the Minions are not very resilient to biological and chemical attacks. In Despicable Me 2, we see the Minions become mutated by the PX-41 Mutagen. Rapidly altering the effected Minion's DNA and causing drastic changes regarding:
      * Tooth and mouth structure
      * Abnormal hair growth
      * Eye color
      * Skin pigment
      * Physical structure
      * Personality and behavior
      Later in Despicable Me 2, we see Dr. Nefario cure the Minions using an antidote mixed with the Jelly from earlier in the film. The PX-41 Mutagen, and its respective cure are solid evidence that the Minions are not entirely immortal and possess a severe and potentially lethal vulnerability to biological and chemical attacks. While some may argue that the PX-41 Mutagen and its antidote did not kill the Minions, a disease or toxic gas could prove fatal showing they can be drastically effected by chemical and biological substances.
      **Evidence No. 3**: Stalin and Hitler both attracted Minions in large quantities to both sides of the Eastern Front, which would result in the gruesome Minion Civil War.
      **Proof:**
      Stalin and Hitler were both evil tyrants who would be seen as nothing more than soulless monsters to any human, but for the Minions, saying they were gods amongst Minion would be an understatement. With Stalin's gulags and Hitler's concentration camps, the two of them would be the greatest villians Minion kind had witnessed. With World War 2 beginning in the 1930s, the Minions suffered a brutal split in their society and culture, now voluntarily choosing sides of the Second World War between the two tyrants of the Eastern Front. Because of this, the Minions would engage in a brutal war to end the disagreement of whether Stalin or Hitler would be more deserving of Minion service and worship.
      Given their vulnerability to chemical agents, both Human and Minion soldiers of the Eastern Front would release chemical agents such as Chlorine, Phosgene and Mustard Gas across the front lines to attack the other side's Minion forces. Given the sheer bloodiness of the Eastern Front, its likely that the majority of the Minions would be killed in the Second World War. Only a few isolated pockets of Minions would survive following the Second World War, with a primary example being the Minions in the ice cave, having emerged following the World Wars with no knowledge of Stalin Or Hitler and the near extinction of their race.
      Evidence of a Minion Civil War occurring and being possible can be found at the end of Despicable Me 3, in which a sizable chunk of Gru's Minions defect to Dru, having deemed Dru more evil and more worth their service, along with the remaining chunk of Minions choosing to remain with Gru.
      **Closure**:
      It is unclear what happens after Gru gives chase to Dru at the end of Despicable Me 3, however it can be safely assumed that Despicable Me 4 will cover the complete extinction of the last remaining Minions as they battle it out through various means of chemical warfare over whether Gru or Dru is more evil.
      Despicable Me 5 will potentially cover Dru and Gru putting their differences aside from their battle in Despicable Me 4 and the two will begin tampering in the realm of genetic engineering in an attempt to revive the Minion species. However the Minions created via Gru and Dru's genetic engineering research would go wrong, and the new Minions would resemble the Post-Humans from All Tomorrows. Leaked script details suggest that the Post-Minions would follow Kevin becoming a female Temptor, Bob getting turned into a Colonial and Stuart being morphed into a Hedonist. It is currently unknown what other All Tomorrows species will appear in the 5th Despicable Me film.
      Overall, It is very likely that the minions did serve Hitler to some capacity, and nearly went extinct following World War 2. The tale of the Minion is nothing short but a tragic one. A culturally rich and intelligent race, which had been around before the Dinosaurs, choosing the path of annihilating themselves over two questions with no answer. Today they are a reminder, that Humanity must avoid the same fate as their Minion brothers. The Minions of the World Wars are to today's Humans as a grim teaching, telling us we must be careful with how we treat the choices of conflict and geopolitics, otherwise, we will hear the rhymes of the history books once more.

    I totally get where you're coming from here. I enjoy animation so much myself and sometimes wish a company like Illumination would take some of that Minions money and do something... bigger and broader, just kind of "on the side". And I do wish that animation aimed at children in general would rise to a higher standard; just because they are children doesn't mean media aimed at them needs to suck. But I do on some level understand the need to sometimes watch something just... dumb. I mean, Aquaman for example, was a horrible, terrible movie on almost every level in my opinion. But I'll be damned if I didn't have a hell of a time watching it.

    Saber, you're genuinely my favorite animation youtuber, you seem like a person who actually knows shit and cares about the medium, I'd say you're as far away from the manchild stereotype of "WHY DOESN'T KID FLICK CATER TO ME, AN ADULT!!" as you could possibly be. I also love animation, so I understand your concern about consumerism and corporation blind praise watering down what's basically an art form.
    Illumination movies are basically like fast food. They're fine to have, they can be really tasty too, but they shouldn't be your entire diet nor what you imagine food as a whole to be.
    I've seen other creators like you express this feeling of "giving up" when it comes to criticizing Illumination movies because they're too successful and people like them and honestly I understand, but I also can't help but think most people that came to you with that were in bad faith because caring about animation as a whole is seen as cringe and "for kids". You did good to stay grounded with your criticisms. I don't know what the solution to it all is, but I think you made a great video that basically discussed all the grievances I also have, so just... keep it up man, you're on the right track!

    To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Minions: The Rise of Gru. The humor is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of theoretical physics most of the jokes will go over a typical viewer's head. There's also Gru's nihilistic outlook, which is deftly woven into his characterisation - his personal philosophy draws heavily from Narodnaya Volya literature, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these jokes, to realize that they're not just funny- they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike Minions: The Rise of Gru truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn't appreciate, for instance, the humour in Gru's existencial catchphrase "I'm gonna gruin this man's whole career," which itself is a cryptic reference to Turgenev's Russian epic Fathers and Sons I'm smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Illumination's genius unfolds itself on their television screens. What fools... how I pity them. 😂 And yes by the way, I DO have a Minions: The Rise of Gru tattoo. And no, you cannot see it. It's for the ladies' eyes only- And even they have to demonstrate that they're within 5 IQ points of my own (preferably lower) beforehand.

Sure they could push things, but they are making something people can enjoy even if not thought provoking or deep.

    The Despicable me movies are some of the only animated flicks Illumination have made that actually meant something to me. Everything else they make is fairly harmless and don’t strive for any outstanding stories or leaps in the field of animation. They’re not visually breathtaking movies, and mostly serve a purpose to gain money at the box office and entertain families.
    You honestly hit the nail on the head though Saber…. World is in a rough place right now. Between Covid and the Trigger happy Psycho’s ruining peoples lives…. Sometimes we just need a movie to remind us that we are still capable of feeling something other than depression with what we face. They may not strive for much, but illumination will always guarantee Entertaining movies that can lighten up your day if you choose to let it.
    Great video as always saber, and I look forward to what you’ll do next.

    The problem with the simple kids' movies, in a larger sense, is that they have no staying power. I'm a daycare teacher, and none of my kids are "fans" of Secret Life of Pets or Sing, even though when those films released they watched and liked them. In contrast to, for example, Moana, which came out in the same era but has seem to just "stuck" in kids' minds/hearts better. Is that due to the magic of Disney Marketing? Maybe, but Sing was pretty heavily marketed as well, but the difference is the quality of movie to go with the marketing.

    Yes exactly. I went to film school and you'd expect me to be the snobby "film critic" type but I also have the awareness of people going to movies to turn their brains off and being entertained for a couple of hours. Not needing the film to be deep. I was that way when I went to see Rise of Gru, and I enjoyed it. My mom thought the film was hilarious. So while I have the film experience and I like analyzing movies too, I'm also on the same wavelength as my parents and know movies are supposed to be mindless fun. I definitely want to mix those two concepts together in my own films. The only problem now is getting in the industry.

  • @Temperans

    I think a lot of the issues with the minion franchise is that the creators know that this type of stuff sells and so they at least put the effort into making as good an animation as they can. So you end up with some really good animation for a movie that is otherwise just childish. So the kids end up watching because "lol fart joke" while the adults end up not despising the experience because "wow that looks cool". This is something that I think a lot of companies lately have forgotten. It is not about selling a product to some abstract numbers. Its about making something that is just fun to see.
    This is also why all the minion clones straight up fail. Every single time they copy the minions because "oh those little yellow things sell" and not the rationale behind it which is "oh those adorable little dorks are funny".

    I was a major SIMP for the minions when I was in grade 5(the time I first saw Despicable Me 2). Around a year later I grew out of it and I didn't even touch it throughout my middle school & high school years because I figured that the franchise didn't have any substance and it was just another modern marketable product to get little kids' attention. But now that I've reached adulthood I'm in further realisation that the Despicable Me/Minions franchise really isn't bad and I'm compelled to come back to see it from time to time. Compared to another franchise I simped for during childhood which I'm now a complete hater of, the Despicable Me/Minions series at least has some redeeming qualities :
    1. The design of the Minions are cute (my favourite minions are Dave, Bob & Otto).
    2. The interactions between Gru and the girls and the Minions are actually pretty sweet, showing that Gru is a great father figure to both the girls and the Minions.
    3. There is depth in Gru's character. He's basically been bullied throughout his school years and it's apparent that he's grown used to/numb towards this type of treatment. In addition to the absence of motherly love during his childhood, he's left all to himself and it's no surprise that he grows up to be a supervillain, because he wants to show the people who had ill-treated him his power and what he can accomplish. All the same, I'm impressed that Gru is still able to preserve kindness, selflessness & love in his core(as shown in how he saves the girls in the first movie for example). I think this is also the reason the Minions are willing to follow him and go back to him after ditching him in Despicable Me 3 - he loves them, he cares for them (the Minions cared for him when he was a child too and he grows up with the Minions), which none of their previous bosses were able to do. Heck he's able to remember the names of every single Minion! He's a "villain", sure, but overall he's not a malicious person, which makes him a very sympathising character.
    P.S. I think Gru & the Minions work best when they're together, which is one of the things that makes Despicable Me 1 & 2 and Minions 2 so enjoyable(Despicable Me 2 and Minions 2 are my personal favourites ; I've never seen the entire Despicable Me 3 but by the looks of it I'm not too impressed ; things in Minions 1 is just over-the-top chaotic & ridiculous and the scene where Stuart hypnotises and dances with the three guards gives me major second-hand embarrassment). When they're in their separate entities, things seem to be a little lost, weirdly.
    4. The soundtracks and some of the songs are absolute bops - just listen to "My Life"(end credit song of Despicable Me 1), "Happy" and "Turn Up The Sunshine"

    As for the Minions, their films are fine, deffo perfect for young kids to just watch and have fun. I would have found them utterly hilarious when I was like 7.
    There is something to be said about not challenging kids with more complex or darker concepts that they will encounter in life, but there are plenty other studios who fo that (thinking of Laika specifically) so imo if Illumination just wants to be 'haha fart jokes' media to entertain children then that's great.

    I could never disagree more with the "turn off your brain and enjoy the movie". To some extent yes, don't tear yourself a new one trying to give criticism to every single movie that isn't a masterpiece and doesn't follow a strict rule of realism. If we all just did that, turned off our brain then disney, and all of these other big movie making companies will just stop caring about quality movies. Imagine if we accepted that family movies doesn't have to be well written, same with superhero movies, we would have never gotten movies like end game, the first iron man movie, narnia, how to train your dragon, avatar the last airbender (the series), arcane, turning red, kung fu panda, encanto, luca, wolf walkers, klaus, zootopia, thor:ragnarok, suicide squad (the new one), the guardians of the galaxy, spiderman: into the spiderverse etc etc. Fuck the "turn off your brain and just enjoy the movie" mentality, of course a movie doesn't have to be a masterpiece to be enjoyable/fun to watch, but damn it has such a much more lasting effect one oneself and larger groups of people when it actually is well written, it can change the perspective of a lot of issues in the world when it's presented right.
    Enjoy your movies, both the good and bad ones, but never stop criticizing these big companies, don't let them use us for easy money.

    After I've watched it on Netflix, Minions: The Rise of Gru was really something. Despicable Me is one of my favorite movie franchises growing up, and I'm glad that there's a sequel to the 2015 spin-off prequel. I honestly like it more than Illumination's other film series like The Secret Life of Pets or Sing, because all the characters have interesting personalities. The film has a couple of homages to the first Despicable Me film and how some characters looked when they were younger, which I find very clever and nostalgic. I didn't expect the Vicious 6 using the Stone to turn into giant animals in the Chinese Zodiac in San Francisco, and I did not also expect them to trying to kill little Gru by tying him to the hands of a clock tower and tearing his body apart like a Jigsaw torture device. In conclusion, Minions: The Rise of Gru was very interesting and nostalgic.

    Personally, I felt Minions:RoG was substantially more funny than the first Minions movie, and actually had some surprisingly creative scenes (for example, the secret entrance behind the waterfall being revealed by the dragons on each side evaporating the water). You definitely have to suspend your disbelief, but sometimes it's okay to just enjoy something.

    I feel this way sometimes when I'm being critical of certain movies and thats what alot of film critics neglect to understand. you can't judge every movie based on the same components, sometimes you see a poorly written movie but you just have to keep your mouth shut because it's not trying to be something amazing. it just wants to be dumb fun, and it succeeds at that

    I thought this movie was fun definitely a improvement from the first movie. Gru is well being gru, the story was a nice way to tell how it all began for gru, minions ofc being minions, the father and son relationship between Gru and a old Vicious 6 member was cute, the ending credits was also pretty nice same goes for the opening, the action and the violence in this movie was a lot of fun, and the sound track here was a thousand times better than modern day music that’s played in modern day kids movies (some can be good but most can be bad) overall thought was a good movie not a fantastic film but definitely a improvement from it’s predecessor giving it a Gru/10 & a 🍌/10. A cinematic gru-sterpiece!

  • @lisemagic208
    @lisemagic208 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I wish they wouldn’t have labeled it as a Minions sequel. The minions themselves are not at all important and are mainly just there to fill runtime. Calling it just “The Rise of Gru” instead of “Minions: the Rise of Gru” would set a much more realistic expectation for the minions’ relevance to the movie. The movie just isn’t about them. Heck if they still wanted to shove a gag in the title, “Despicable Me 0: The Rise of Gru” would work too.

    As a kid, One of my favorite movies ever was the 2D animated Adaptation of "The Brave Little Toaster". It dealt with very real themes, was very entertaining, and in some ways shaped who I am today.
    I don't think people will ever be able to say things like that about movies like Minions the rise of gru.
