The Return is definitely more inspired by FWWM and Mulholland Drive than the original series. I think David Lynch was even trying to adapt M.D into a television series, and that eventually evolved into The Return.

The bit with the coffee would have been hilarious if at the end Diane from off screen chucked a stack of coffee filters at Cooper's face just before he walked off. Plus it needed some of the classic Twin Peaks music in the background, something peppy like if Coop was dining at The Double R Diner.

Albert and Gordon are afraid of her because she's a 'tough cookie, always was'.

Us, the audience (Cooper), demanded Twin Peaks (Diane) for a season 3 to exist and also to know who Diane was, that's what we wanted and made Lynch do it, and look at what happened between the two characters. Lynch was warning us to be careful about what we desired all along
I still really think Diane’s role would’ve been better if replaced with Annie Blackburn in The Return, but this makes their relationship seem way less forced than it felt when first watching The Return. It would’ve been really funny if they genuinely confirmed that Diane doesn’t exist, that’s Cooper’s office and he’s been imagining her the whole time.

I hate this deleted scene. He's way too much of a womanizer in it and it comes across as forced. It's completely out of character for him. And the "changing something in the room" gag is played waaaay too obviously. They (he) should be acting like they do this EVERY week like it's no big deal. And I always imagined there being a pretty robust respect between the two of him - like he knows he wouldn't be where he is without Diane taking care of his needs. Waaaaay out of character for Cooper.
I take back my criticism on this scene, because The Return makes it clear that Cooper isn't the pure hero we thought him to be and is in fact as narcissistic and self-absorbed as the rest of us. Maybe even moreso.
