      @@IndianMilitaryHistoryRespected Sir
      Greetings for the day!
I am Abhimanyu Joon, resident of Vallabh Vidyanagar, District Anand (Gujarat). The place where I reside is named after independent India’s first Home Minister Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel because this place is also his birthplace.
My family has been blessed with the opportunity to have served the nation since last 4 generations covering a period of 100 years beginning from World War-1 till date. My grandfather Colonel Baljit Singh, who is the third-generation officer of my family fought for protecting the integrity and sovereignty of the nation during the 1965 Indo-pak war in Sialkot sector, as a member of 3 Madras regiment that constituted 69th Infantry Brigade; 6 Mountain Division. For his active participation in that war, he has been bestowed upon with SAMAR SEVA STAR, RAKSHA MEDAL and SAINYA SEVA MEDAL.
I would like to request if you could make an animation video concerning Battle of Maharajke that was fought during 1965 Indo-pak war in Sialkot sector, inside the enemy territory.
This battle led to capture of pakistani Rangers' Recruitment cum Training centre deep inside enemy territory and provided a launch pad for Indian tank regiments to launch further attacks further inwards leading some of the fiercest battles such as Battle of Phillora, which was the largest tank battle fought after World War -2 on the Indian subcontinent.
Attack on Maharajke and its subsequent capture had many first to it. It was the first trans-border operation conducted by Indian Army for the first time since independence. It involved elements of urban warfare, which involved house-to-house clearing during capture of Maharajke. The Americans had their first experience of urban warfare during Operation Iraqi Freedom (2002-03) after which this type of warfare got popularised, while Indian Armed forces had experienced it 50 years ago during 1965 itself.
Maharajke and its nearby towns and villages such as Phogawal, Kaloi, Phillora, Alhar remained under Indian occupation for 5 months from Sept'65 till Feb'66 when Taskhent pact was formally implemented.
However the irony is the above operation of Maharajke led by the constituent units of 69th Infantry Brigade(6 Mountain Div) which included 3 Madras regiment, one of the oldest infantry units of Indian army could not find it due mention in the official war history that was written 20 years after the war by PhD students from JNU at the behest of Indian Defence Ministry.

This video is highly flawed and terribly biased. It under rates the brilliance of General Harbakhsh Singh. General Harbakhsh Singh was an extraordinarily courageous general, who defied the orders of the then Chief of the Army staff General J.N. Chaudhry to vacate the brave Majha Region and did not surrender Amritsar to the Pakistanis. Rather he succeeded in capturing parts of Lahore and occupied a huge chunk of land in Sialkot Sector. This narration also does not do full justification to the bravery of Major General Rajinder Singh Sparrow.

It was clearly stated that both nations would move forward with increased cultural and trade exchanges after the war. Capturing Lahore was a declared aim of the Indian high command.
Attacking Lahore was a brilliant counter move by Indian high command that effectively killed any Pakistani military aim regarding Kashmir , but defending Lahore was an unmatched feat by the defenders.
You can read about the details of Indian formations attacking Lahore. Lightly armed Rangers were defending, numbering around 5000. They stopped a force of an estimated 35,000 backed by mechanised units buying enough time before falling back to the western side of BRB canal. This gave regular troops enough time to fall in defensive positions. The war ended after 17 days at the same point.
Indian high command failed to capture Lahore, and Pakistanis failed in Kashmir. War ended in a stalemate.
Since the Pakistanis started the war , failure to achieve their military aims may be considered as having lost the war.

    • @IndianMilitaryHistory
      @IndianMilitaryHistory  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      Thank you for sharing that.
Actually capturing Lahore was never the intended objective of the Indian army during its offensive. Any army that wants to capture and maintain a major city like Lahore would allocate significantly more than 3 divisions for that objectivr.
The intended objective was to start the incursion and build a bridgehead across the Icchogil canal, so Pakistan is forced to divert troops from Akhnoor where they were winning.. which I guess you call the BRB canal now. 3 Jat was actually able to achieve that within a few hours of the ingress and the international media reported that out. This made the Pakistan army abandon their plans in Kashmir and come to the rescue of Lahore. So from that perspective India achieved its primary objective.
But, I think they were not able to capitalize on the initial gains and had to abandon the bridgehead by the end of the same day. This was because the other battalions were not able to reinforce 3 Jat in the later part of the day. A lot of this was due to the effective action by the Pak Air Force.
You're right in pointing out that it came to a stalemate after 20 days of fighting. But since the war was started by Pakistan with Op Gibralter and then Grand Slam, Indian side had to just thwart that effort, which it did. So I assess this as a loss from Pakistan's perspective and a stalemate from India' s perspective.

The war was a disaster fir both sides with some brilliant defence from both sides as well.
Pakistan army had a myth that Indian forces would not fight back, was proven wrong. And like you said, the Pakistan army's objective was not achieved so technically they took nothing from the war, for India achieving status quo was a victory.
Pakistan army repeated the same thing in Kargil, showing it never learns and as institution it lacks accountability.

22:12 As a person who ìs
a professional soldier let me educate you. Haji Pir had to be exchanged for territory lost in Akhnur sector. Pak was sitting deployed at 4 km from the Akhnur Iron Bridge over River Chenab. In another war initiated by Pak or a standalone operation all it could have very well done was to make a short heavily weighted thrust to cut the road to Rajouri and Poonch. It was too dangerous for us.
As far as Lahore is concerned, for a layman it sounds so simple to take a built up area of that size. The Israel Hamas War in Gaza is a good example to absorb the challenge built up areas pose

@@atahasnain sir, I know it was exchanged for areas captured by pak. But operational difficulties and strategic importance of haji pir was greater and that hurts India till now. Akhnur we could have pushed them back with help from airforce.
And in 1971, anyways with 1 lac captured pak soldiers, we could have forced them to accept our demands. It was perhaps first time in history that a lost side dictated terms in talks and got better deal! Inept political leadership and some magnanimous/short sighted advice from some top military think tank caused unending headache for us and we still bleed in valley due to this.
Lahore and gaza cases are totally different. It was almost unguarded when we reached there and could have easily captured and enforced it with arrival of more forces. Imagine what would be leverage for Pakistan if it had captured Amritsar... Same or more case of Lahore.
Anyhow, next time hope we learn from these blunders since 47 and have worked out solid plan for all scenarios. Thank god cong is not in power!

In this regard, Pakistan had better weapon systems than India due to its arrangements with the Western Powers, they took the initiative by attacking first and India had to respond, and they used their non state actors as an effective tool ..

30000 is a very large number for special forces. Pakistan has traditionally worked on unconventional methods much more than India. But unconventional guerilla forces can only reach a particular level much below the victory bar. Their success needs to be followed up the the conventional forces, which was not the case ever with Pakistan. This has been their weakest link. Their planners thought guerilla forces can run over an army, impractical.

In Sialkot seector, 25th cavalary under lt Col Nisar Kaka overwhelmed indias elephant division. The regiment is nicknamed as Men of Steel..

Major General Akhtar Hussain Malik was defending, and at the height of the engagement between two sides, he requested SOS fire from the heavy Pakistani artillary to be dropped on the battle field with a risk of hitting own troops and tanks.
The battle of Asl utter was not really a tank to tank battle. A brilliant defence strategy bogged down the Pakistani attack , inflicting heavy losses.

Nothing is deliberate here .. I didn't cover the Battle of Phillora or Chawinda. The Battle of Phillora was extremely favourable to the Indian side while Chawinda wasn't. These would be a part of the deep dives that are planned out for later .. So do stay tuned for that.
Secondly, battle of Asal Uttar is significant because it was the elite tank unit of the Pakistan army composed of its most advanced Patton tanks in that battle. These were defeated by the much older centurion tanks of the Indian army, along with support from other tank hunting parties.
I am assuming you are from Pakistan .. I hope you are staying safe in Pakistan. I know things are kind of fluid with the recent elections. Praying for democratic forces to prevail and the will of the people is heard. Pakistan can finally become a country that has an army, as opposed to a country that is owned by its army. Take care.

As a Bangladeshi, I should say this IDIOTIC war of 1965 was started by over estimation of strength of Pakistan keeping East Pakistan open to attack by India without any effective power of military strength in East Pakistan by Ayub Khan regime. Same should be said of Arab - Israel 6-day war of 1967 started by Arab world without understanding the real strength of Israel was USA. Had Ayub Khan of Pakistan understood after Indo-China war of 1962, that East PAKISTANIS should have access to arms and ammunition like West Pakistan, not neglecting East Pakistanis as short statured, KALA ADMI not fit for war, then East Pakistan could not be separated

      @IndianMilitaryHistory  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

I would differ with you in that. So the estimation that Ayub made was accurate - after the 1962 India China war, the Indian military was weak. However it was rapidly building its capabilities under the new defense minister YB Chavan. Ayub' s perspective was this was their chance - they had to attack India before it got too strong again. The mistake he made was that he waited too long - some of the transformation in the Indian Military had already started trickling in by 1965. 1963 would have been a much more ideal timeline for the attack from Pakistan perspective. But again perhaps they were also not ready with their weapon systems by then.
Agree with you on the points on East Pakistan.

In fact there are many fabrications in this video. I am an eyewitness of 1965 war.
My uncle was Colonel on the Lahore front and I as a young Lieutenant was in Sialkot getting ready to be deployed to Kashmir when India attacked Wahga. My uncle was among the first respondents and got the call at 2:30AM. We started defence of Lahore from the 3rd line of defence along the city limits of Lahore. My father as a reserved volunteer joined his brother's unit.
Pakistan responded with intense heavy guns and airforce. By noon Indian offence was halted. Indians had overnight established a temporary camp east of Dograe Kalan and occupied the BRB canal bridge on GT Road. Local villagers and Pakistan soldiers succeeded in breaching the banks of BRB canal and numerous points.
As the Pakistani offensive intensified Indians retreated but the water slowed down their retreat. Indians took heavy casualties and had to abandon their combat vehicles and ride trucks. Apparently there were not enough to evacuate Indians troops quickly. After the war an Indian Brigadier's jeep was found stuck in the fields.
Communications were poor in Indian army. Many units were not aware that they were to retreat from Wahga sector back to India. A few lost lives but many were taken by Pakistani Army.
On Sialkot front, I was getting ready for Kashmir deployment when India attacked Chumb a border village north of Sialkot and captured it without resistance. We were sent to Chumb instead, but India after taking village overnight, abandoned it by the dawn. There was not a single person in the village when we arrived.
That was when we heard that India had attacked Chawinda front south of Sialkot. It seemed like Chumb was just a distraction.
It was Chawinda where the biggest tank battle took place. India had attacked Chawinda with all their tank might. Pakistan had to redirect their armour from SIalkot. Chawinda was definitely a surprise and showed that India planned the war very well. But Chawinda was the place where biggest battle of tanks took place since WWII.
On Kasur / Kham Karan front, Pakistan met little resistance and advanced well into India. One can say that India fought with all it had after Kham Karan fell to Pakistan, Pakistan did not lose the number of tanks India claimed. We lost a very capable Brigadier Ahsan Rashid Shami there, but shortly after Asal Uttar battle started, cease fire was called and no side took much life or equipment loss there. If at all, India took heavy losses in the Kaem Karar battle and on retreat to Asal Uttar.
On Chawinda side, where we were re-deployed, Indian attack was mighty. Hundreds of tanks were rolled in. Neither Pakistan not India were well versed in armored warfare.
I was attached with Major Nasir Khan who had recently returned from America after an advance armor battle course. Pakistan rolled in tanks from Gujranwala Cantt. Pakistan tanks moved much faster than Indians, and could shoot much longer range. Also, Pakistani tanks could fire on the move while Indians could not.
Chawinda battle was the largest. It was fought in Pakistan territory and Gujranwala was not far from there. So Indian advance had to be halted at all cost. Pakistani tanks surrounded Chawinda to defend any advances towards Gujranwala and Sialkot. We did that very well. Major Nasir wes probably the only one in that battle on either side who knew how to use tanks.
Airforce came to great rescue as well. Short story, a huge count of Indian tanks were destroyed. Indians were pushed out of Chawinda but were still occupying a large Pakistani territory when ceasefire was called. Battleground was littered with destroyed and abandoned Indian tanks. They remained there for years. Village children made games climbing them. Some were taken away by Pakistan army for war museum.
Indian attack along international border was unexpected and took Pakistan by surprise. But it seemed that Indians had planned it well and for a long time. It definitely was not a reaction to Akhnoor.
India attacked Pakistan at Wahga (Lahore), Kasur and Chawinda simultaneously. Lahore attack was repelled within a couple of days. At Kasur front Pakistan moved well into India capturing Khem Karan and advancing. At Chawinda again very heavy Indian attack was halted but Pakistan could not respond quick enough.
From Pakistan point of view, strategy was evolving, since Indian attack was unexpected. It was broken down into two phases -
    1- Defend and stop Indians
    2- Counter attack
Pakistan was able to do the counter attack on Kasur front and capture Khem Karan. But before Pakistan could launch a counter offensive, ceasefire was called. We will never know what would have been the outcome of Pakistani counter offensive. But this is an eyewitness account.

Salute for your and your family services to this nation. Your eye witness account us the real truth, but these are times of propaganda and lies and indian keep on making this false propaganda and as they are my h more in numbers so the lie more. Irony is that even many Pakistani also get effected by this kind of propaganda. Yes Pakistani troops fought valiantly and gave such a response that indian have to restore such hilarious claims that they did not want to capture Lahore. Secondly they brought another big lie that Pakistan had better equipment. But when we check we find it was a big fat lie to hide their humiliation.

Good question. yes, early 1963 would have been a good time to start a campaign from a Pakistan perspective. I'll have to read more in this.
Pakistan's strategy in 1965 heavily depended on modern equipment to offset India's numerical advantage. I'd be curious to see when the Patton tanks, F86 Sabres, and F104 starfighters were inducted into the Pak armed forces.
Even in 1965 they first tried to test the waters in Gujarat before moving forward.

@@IndianMilitaryHistorythis a big fat lie of indian forces that Pakistan had better equipments. If you don't know let me enlighten you IAF had mig 21 in their inventory they are very candid about his many. Going by the time line at least two squadrons all armed with air to air missiles.

@@IndianMilitaryHistoryIAF workhorse was Hawker Hunter a very capable aircraft and on paper a better aircraft than f86 . With six squadron of Hunter and if I am not wrong six of Canberra bomber squadrons, Pakistan had only 20 B 57, 102 f86 only 20 armed with missiles ab 12 f104. IAF had better equipment and much greater number but it's losses were four time than PAF.

This sounded as two countries equal in size are fighting
    It's a world record
Find another country struggling with 5th of its size
However this was before Pakistan army decided to pay attention to business rather then their actual job
Right now ask Modi why has he gone silent on Pakistan
    You now why ???
