- On our final evening away from home during this trip, we eagerly anticipated our visit to Koppies. This Free State town is nestled beside the picturesque Koppies Dam, though regrettably, entry eluded us. Undeterred, we embraced the opportunity to explore the town itself, stumbling upon intriguing sights. of which the highlight was the operational station. Later, we retreated to Paradys Game Lodge, a charming retreat located approximately five kilometers from the N1. The Kantskool is where Emily started a Lace School where they taught the ladies to make lace. 👍 Yvonne
My family had a clothing shop in koppies.Frik Hefers was the shop owner.
'Kantskool' in english is 'Lace school'. Lace is needle work done by hand or machine work in a pattern like a web. The Boervrouens were very good at it and after the Anglo Boer War Emily assisted them to generate an income.
This is the first liquor drive-through I have ever come across in SA .......... and it had to be in Koppies of all places! I had a good chuckle. Your awesome drone coverage of the lodge and surrounds extending to the little town itself in the distance, painted a beautiful green, fertile patch of land. After leaving the chaos of trying to survive in Johannesburg (for the best part of their entire working life) some two years ago with the vision and ideal of living a simple homestead-style life, friends of mine bought a plot of land not far from the Paradys Game Lodge, built a tiny house and live off the land with their many animals ranging from chickens to a few cows. A simple and totally self-sufficient life. Now I understand why they headed to the beauty of the Koppies environs. Thank you for this journey to the Free State. I look forward to taking a ride with you on your next expedition. Travel safe.
What a peaceful little town. My favorite was the liquor store drive through. Had a good old laugh. Please be safe as you travel. Looking forward to the next one.❤❤
I did take a moment for the clouds sonia. Another lovely small town with so much to give. ❤ sorry you could not get to the dam. We had louvre Windows in a few houses we lived in growing up. Safe travels you two dusty buggers 😂😂❤😂😂 your cosmos close up was awesome
Hi guys great to be back on the gravel road. Shame you couldn't get in Koppies dam .as you drove in to town there was a lovely thatched house with eye brow windows. The Ethiopian church was intriguing 🤔 Emmely Hobhouse retirement village I would imagine its ideal lovely relaxing place. I agree with you I think I'd avoid the smash and grab guest house lol .loved the drive through liquor store the church was very modern and the clock tower looks like it might take off like a rocket. Loved the voortrekker monument the station is in use in some capacity witch is good 👍 the high street had plenty of stalls and quite a few shops with the disco tractor driving through lol .interesting history. Shame about the pool as you say first to go game Park in town and blesbok only in SA!!! .paradise Lodge lived up to its name with the little cottages and very well priced you can't beat a African sunset wow lovely place to stay and the drone footage really shows the area loved the Afrikaaner cattle in the road as you were leaving. Isn't cosmos amazingly beautiful! I have cosmos in my garden here in NZ. Always reminds me of the beautiful free state. I was once in Koppies and did visit the dam. But that was in the year dot. Just remember a freezing cold wind. It was July though. Just sorry you didn't visit Kroonstadt. Dying to know what has happened to my favourite town. Back in my day the railway station was very active. Maybe next time. So enjoyed my tour of the free state from your back seat. Thank you so much.❤❤❤

Was an amazing visit to see in the Free State, I see you still need to do south of Lesotho, from Rhodes area (just south of the prev only ski resort in South Africa Tiffindell) down to Barkley East , Elliot, Ugie and Maclear area.... We in Elliot, if you head this way, hit us up...
P.S. two famous rugby players, Os du Randt and Mark Andrews were born in Elliot...😁😁

I grew up in Westonaria. We were in Std 8 when a friend moved away with her parents. I'm not sure how she figured out what classroom we were in, but she came to the window. She was in her new very nice blue school uniform. The teacher realised there was some kind of distraction outside and came to the window. "Where do you belong?" he asked. She replied, "Koppies sir." We all burst out laughing and even the teacher had to see the humour in the situation. That's many moons ago.
I drove from Heilbron to koppies with the train for the day when I was little, whe had a picnic at the school in koppies, I was 5 yerars old, was a school trip. I can stil remember it.

Out on the koppies dam road 3.5km out of town and 2.5km from the dam on a small holding and you drove past me when i went to Jostas for some fresh farm milk and some bread😂

Die meeste van die smal laagwaterbruê se relings is weg. Dit het gebeur omdat plaasimplemente hedendaags te wyd is vir die bruggies veral die stropers se tafel (dis die voorkant wat die stroopwerk doen) wat nóg wyer is as die stroper. Oor lang afstande word die tafel op 'n tafelkar (sleepwa) gelaai om te vervoer.
Swembaddens is meestal die munisipale eiendom. Daarom ook in swak toestand. Geen onderhoud !!!
There is plenty of land for animals and people such a pity that we only want the best land
