  • Dr. Craig Harper shows you how to create better whitetail habitat and forage with very little time, resources and money. Creating, or maintaining openings in your timber can increase natural forage for whitetails, and also, create better overall habitat. It takes Craig less than an hour and he uses nothing but a chainsaw and selective herbicides. He also explains the how and why behind cutting, girdling or leaving specific trees.

An appropriate application of glyphosate would kill the grasses in the area; allowing the native seed bank to germinate, in turn, providing great cover and high quality forage at the site!

I have a ton of poplar and sweetgum on my property. What would be the best course of action for those 2 species?

You could use the "hack and squirt" method if you wanted the trees to die and decompose slowly over time. Or you could cut the trees down and treat the cambium layer with the proper herbicide application to prevent re-sprouting. Check out our LandBeat "How to Kill Unwanted Trees | Hack and Squirt" I think it will help you out! th-cam.com/video/0ndSXRFbHxc/w-d-xo.html

Your crazy for cutting down the oaks

    • @Whitetail_Properties

Some oaks are good acorn producers and some aren't. Some oaks might also be competing with others and limiting production on one or both of the trees. Craig explained his reasoning and specifically said some people might not agree or understand and that is totally okay. The purpose of this video was not about cutting down oak trees. It was about creating affordable whitetail habitat.

Whitetail Properties what deer is going to walk under that huge oak that he girdled when the limbs start falling?

@@alacy777 limbs/trees fall in the woods all the time, off of dead and living trees. Typically during inclement, though. So the deer would probably be bedded up somewhere 🤷🏻‍♂️

Dr. Harper is from South Carolina. They pronounce a handful of words differently than the rest.
