How to replace a fuel gauge that is broken

So is it the Fuel Gauge unit behind the dashboard or the sending unit near the fuel tank? Watch as I eliminate one out of the equation. This is a 1997 Chevy Lumina and the Gauge has been acting funny for probably around a year or so. Just been following the gas in the tank by the miles driven. Every 200 miles driven I fill er up!

Why do you have to drop your gas tank can't you just take stuff out the back to reach your gas tank to get to the fuel pump ?
