@@tala9499For me it is going well. The only thing is that sometimes after the backup cam comes on, the screen goes black when I go into drive. I just hit the home button or back button and it brings the Home Screen. Not a big issue for me.
One other thing to point out, there are two protective films on the screen. I peeled off the oversized thin one thinking that was it. Later, I noticed a small spec on the screen and then others. They were perfectly round and when I looked close it looked like specs of dust caught under a screen protector. Sure enough, there was a protective screen in addition to the thin film. Not sure what it says about cleanliness of the manufacturing facility with a number of specs of dust under the screen protector!!!! Anyway, glad the screen wasn't damaged so I didn't have to remove or send back.
Thanks for taking the time to walk through this installation! I've decided to purchase a 'pre-owned' SUV but have realized that many of the digital control features I hoped for, were very limited if the SUV was 7-10 years old. For me, having up-to-date navigation maps that run off GPS rather than a mobile connection, is essential. I want to end up with a 'digital radio' that allows for an alternative to Google Maps. I think that Sygic or Waze, connected via Auto Android, will be my best solution. When you were making a choice between the many after-market head units now available, what technical factors swayed you to choose the Viabecs unit? Thanks, Leo
I am debating between this and an Apple CarPlay module. Once this is installed, is there an firmware update that will allow settings within the original OEM head unit to be customized? As an example, the OEM head unit has a setting where the door locks can either all open when you use the key fob or the driver door only with the key fob or the smart key on the door handle. Changing the level of the back door hatch in the cargo area can be done through the OEM head unit daytime running headlights can be turned on or off within the OEM head unit. These are just some of the major ones that I would not want to lose access to, I did run a test where I took the negative battery terminal off of the battery to see if the settings stayed how they were programmed or if they would reset and they did stay the same as they were originally programmed in the head unit. I’m wondering if you guys cannot provide access to these essential vehicle customization OEM options if we just have to set up the vehicle the way that we want prior to putting your aftermarket head unit in and hope that the settings never revert back to a factory reset, as I don’t know where that information would be stored if it’s not stored Within the OEM head unit? As an example if I have all of the door locks set to open at the same time through the OEM head unit and I put your head unit in will that setting remain or will it revert back to the factory setting of just the driver door openingwith one push of the unlock on the key fob? If all of the functions that we set up in the original head, unit will remains stored on the main computer of the vehicle. I may be OK with that, but if they could ever be wiped out while your head unit is in and the only way I would have access to change it back is to reinstall the original head unit that is just unacceptable to me as I’m locked out of way too many features on this vehicle, I think you guys need to address this publicly as everyone needs to know what they are getting themselves into and quite frankly you should create a firmware update or an app to address this issue if you don’t have an answer. Please let me know as I would like to purchase your unit, butit’s not acceptable to lose all of those features. Time is of the essence thank you for your response.
Awesome video - helped me a ton installing. How do you access key features like lock settings, daytime running lights and many other features? Anyway to have that feature kept? 2) Also: is there any latency between audio? Like if you play TH-cam video, will the audio transferred via Bluetooth have a delay and video being slightly ahead than the audio (audio slightly delayed) ? Thank you for your help!
We have a 2016 with no satellite camera view. The rear camera works great but we don’t have the above feature. There is SOME latency due to the CarPlay running through Bluetooth and not direct. But it is minor. Thanks for watching

Thanks for the review and tutorial on the install. Because of your video, I purchased the same unit and it is working great! The only issue I am having is being able to hear my music from Spotify on the CarPlay in ALL the speakers. For some reason it is only playing in the front speakers. When I play the radio through the android section of the unit, all speakers are working and I am able to EQ the lows, miss, and highs. BUT, when I play music through the CarPlay section of the unit, the music is very flat with no EQ and it only plays through the front speakers. Have you had this same issue or do you know what I am doing wrong?
Ok one more question post install. Everything is working great so far except I can not get the unit to default to aux mic instead of built in mic. Any clues?
I put the same unit in my wife’s ‘19 Highlander. The ONLY complaint i have is the terrible mic quality. I’m thinking about wiring in the factory mic so I’m very curious to see if you can get the unit to default to an external mic. If so, I’m going to give it a shot.
Thanks for the video. Can you clarify, is the spare USB plug only for charging or is it both wired Android Auto and charging? I have a USB Firestick Dongle from Carlinkit that I'm hoping will play my Firestick through the USB port. Thanks
I don’t have an android but I think that the spare USB is for the android CarPlay and I believe you can play media from it. I did a system update at one point on the unit and use that port to transfer the file.
Yet there is no discussion on how to enter the destination into the navigation feature. It is the main reason I am considering this replacement. Is there voice recognition or do I have to go through the tedious process of typing it it in?

Great video. I have a 2018 Highlander and installed an Alpine wireless CarPlay head unit several years ago. It’s a very small screen though and this looks like a great upgrade to a bigger screen. I have a few questions. 1) Do you have to select CarPlay from the menu every time you start the car or can you make CarPlay the default app to launch? 2) on my steering wheel if I long press the “speech” button it initiates Siri. Does that work the same with this unit? 3) My Alpine is wired or wireless CarPlay. Is this one only wireless for CarPlay? Thanks and great job!
Hi. Yes. Only wireless/bluetooth for CarPlay. It works through the “Tlink” app. Sometimes it restarts automatically. Sometimes I need to press the tlink app to initiate CarPlay. Siri works with the talk button on the steering wheel. Thanks for watching
@@PictureTimeI received mine and installed it in my 2018 Highlander. It works great! I found a setting in the Tlink app that allows you enable automatic connection to Tlink/Carplay. The only thing I’m trying to figure out is how to delete or reorder the icons on the main screen. Do you know?
Thanks for the video. I just got mine installed and i am still trying to figure out all of the settings. For some reason every time i use with my phone still of my contacts on my phone go away. Do you have any idea why this is happening?
Can you please tell me if you still have the features of seeing your gas mileage in the graph ? and do you still have access to the doppler radar? Thanks in advance
I’m not sure what you mean about gas mileage in the graph. I can still read the gas mileage in the lcd in the dash now problem. Never used Doppler radar. Sorry
This is a great video! Btw, is the Apple CarPlay unit compatible with the original dashboard screen (between the speedometer and rpm meter)? i.e. if you play a song using the new infotainment device, would you be able to use the steering wheel buttons to scroll pages on the original dashboard, and see that the name of the song in that dashboard screen too? - Cheers!
So, I bought it, and you do lose two features between the RPMs and MPH gauges. The music info and the compass screens are no longer available. Just black screens. But literally everything else works. It even tells you the car's voltage ⚡️
Do all the OEM features still work? i.e. the bird's eye cameras? (If you have a limited, you should have the four-camera configuration cameras) the in dash information features? steering wheel controls?
Great Video! I just purchased it and im getting it tomorrow. i was skeptical on whether or not to get due to lack of the reviews. How is the unit after almost 4 months?
It’s good. It’s still better than the factory system but took some tweaking to get everything set the way we wanted. It’s nice having CarPlay in the car!
Hey Jeff, question for ya. Thanks so much first of all for your great video. Ended up buying and installing the unit, but I noticed something you didn't mention in your video, therefore the question. Does your multi-function display by the odometer still work? I no longer get speed, direction, street info, temps, or music info on it. The other functions work just fine. What is your experience? Thanks so much!
@@PictureTime lol Just my luck. Customer service told me it stopped working because of hardware issues, more specifically that their radio didn’t replicate all the OEM radio inputs and outputs. Seems an odd oversight. Anyway, thanks for the reply! Hope you guys have a great rest of the year!
Hey quick question. Does the device have wired apple carplay also? For example if u wanted someone else to connect to CarPlay, do I have to turn off Bluetooth and they have to connect, or can you connect via usb
Anyone have any tips for getting the steering wheel buttons to work? I did the step under factory settings to select the SimpleSoft CAN box and All New Highlander/Public but so far no joy with any of the controls.
Mine worked right away. Double check you got everything plugged in correctly in back, then reach out to Viabecs support on Amazon. They are very responsive.
Hey i installed this. But I need help!! Everything works but the volume controls? Why is this? Sound comes out but I can’t control the volume. Plz help !
But you've lost the built in NAV and other settings that allow vehicle control like the hatch setting and diagnostics. Personally, I think a better option is the CAR SYNC TECH Android Auto/Car play adapter - you can keep all the factory head unit functions and auto-connect wirelessly to Android or Apple phones. It also gives HD video quality of the Android Auto/Car play. But this unit does have a very large display (but no volume nobs). Nice video though.
Actually there’s a mini VCI Toyota tech stream which allows you to control all the settings of the car from your obd2 to laptop…. You can even turn off the seatbelt dings, hatch height, etc
How did you reach out to support? Was it via e-mail to a yahoo account? I am having issues with the backup camera, it showing up in Black & White and the imaging is broken up/distorted.
Hi, I just installed this today. But if I put the car on reverse, it does show the back up camera but the audio goes out. But if I put it in park or drive, the audio is fine. Is there a resolution to this?
@@PictureTime Go to regular settings. On the left scroll down and select reverse. On the main page scroll all the way down to reversing volume control and set it to max. ...great video, btw!
I installed mine the other day and everything seems to be working great except the backup camera. It’s not as clear as it was on my OEM head unit. Is that normal? I looked around at settings and didn’t see anywhere that I could change the resolution. It works, it’s just fuzzy. I thought that was crazy because the screen is so sharp, and I didn’t change the camera or anything, it’s the one that’s factory on my 2019 XLE. Is it possible I used a wrong cable or is everyone’s like that? Thanks for the great vid!
That’s a great question. The link in the description is the exact unit we got. I’m not an Android guy and am just using the app so that Apple CarPlay works, so I’m not sure which version it is.
dumb question from old geezer here but is this unit practical for us Samsung Galaxy phone owners? Plus i do use XM radio all the time in my non JBL 2019 highlander. Assuming you can use factory satelitte antenna if so? thankyou great video!
It will likely work better with a Samsung phone as it’s an Android based head unit. I think you can run XM as well but I don’t use XM or Sirius now so I am not the best person to speak into that. Anyone else tried running sat radio?
@@PictureTime I am a bit confused how this works. The breakout cable from the radio and aux L/R out which you connect to aux L/R in on the CAN0004-X cable which then must go the factory connectors. But the instructions say to just connect the L/R not FL/FR/RL/RR, etc. However, I seem to be able to do L/R balance and F/R fade control. Maybe someone can help me understand how this is accomplished and/or if I may have wired incorrectly.
Does it have an audio delay? Like if you play TH-cam video from the phone thru Bluetooth, does the sound take a delay transferring to the car audio? Video is slightly ahead of the voice?
I have a 2015 Highlander and after install everything looks great except the video quality for the backup camera is grainy. Didn’t install something incorrectly? Thoughts anyone?
You have to go to factory settings and check what rear camera settings are applied. For cars default rear view cam it should be set to CVBS. These device makers set it default to AHD which is for additional HD camera provided
My Viabecs unit like this one defaults to NTSC and the picture quality is not super great. It won’t even work if you select AHD or any of the other system options.
@@pradeepnatekar Yes I believe you’re correct. I imagine it is the resolution of the factory camera. It doesn’t really bother me much to be honest. The mic quality on phone calls is really the only feature that bothers me.
So far I've connected it to my home wifi (from the garage) and also to my phones hotspot and it seems to work great in both cases. I've not tested it for distance from the router. Thanks for watching.
It's somewhat garbage. There is a small antenna that is on the yellow backup camera video in breakout cable. So it is buried in your dash behind the firewall. It works but you need to be in relatively good proximity to a decent wifi signal. Don't expect to be able to drive down the block and still get wifi. Best bet is to turn on hotspot on your phone when you need wifi.
So after a couple of months of use, how would you rate this unit? What are some features you lose access to with the unit that were only available on the OEM (i.e. driver speak easy)? Since your car is a Limited, I assume it has backup sensors. Does the new unit still display warnings when backing up and you get close to an object? I'm thinking of pulling the trigger on this unit in the next couple of days and just wanted as much info as I can get.
I’d say we retained nearly all of the factory features. There is a learning curve with getting it all set up but it’s quite customizable. We have the backup sensors and turned on the feature where the warning pops up on the screen and shows you the area that the warning is in. My struggle has been with mic audio levels, and surround sound zones. But I’m getting that sorted out with Viabecs and I’m confident we’ll get it set up. They have been very responsive.
I just installed the unit yesterday and I'm pleased for the most part. Like you mentioned, figuring out the surround sound zones has been a bit of a hassle. When I make adjustments to the surround sound, I honestly can't hear even the slightest change in audio, and I have a very well trained ear. I was wondering if you've encountered this problem though: not all audio channels are coming through. When listening to music, it's obvious that some levels are missing entirely, and I'm not quite sure what could be the cause of that. My first thought was that connecting the red and white six cables might be forcing all levels into just two, muting some of the frequencies in the process. Have you dealt with this at all? Our cars have identical features and setups.
@@tala9499 yes, I was able to get the sound dialed in! There's one particular setting in the sound menu called "navi mixer" or something to that effect that has to be turned off to get the the audio to cooperate. To that end, I have a growing list of questions I plan on emailing Viabecs when I can convince myself to sit down and do it about the functionality and compatibility with the vehicle... just gotta will myself to do it.

Hi.
Any update Michael, how do you like it?
@@tala9499 It’s been working great! No complaints.
Thanks for the video. I just got mine installed and i am still trying to figure out all of the settings. For some reason every time i use with my phone still of my contacts on my phone go away. Do you have any idea why this is happening?
I would check with Viabecs support on that.
Sorry
@@PictureTimeDoppler Radar is an app that comes with the original Toyota unit. I would imagine CarPlay has a similar app.
Does the steering wheel voice button, hang up, and answer work also skip button
Yes. The steering wheel buttons work.
- Cheers!
Good question. I also want to know this.
So, I bought it, and you do lose two features between the RPMs and MPH gauges. The music info and the compass screens are no longer available. Just black screens. But literally everything else works. It even tells you the car's voltage ⚡️
@@jimstercintron7523 that's cool glad u like it
@@jimstercintron7523 do you still see the street you're on and the speed limit?
@kristend344 you'll lose that. The radio does that and so much more. It's worth it.
How does the whole wifi thing work? like does it connect to your homes wifi or it has its own internet wifi/ Wouldnt you pay monthly for that?
It connects to your home WiFi or your cells hotspot. Then you can stream stuff to the screen.
Do all the OEM features still work?
i.e. the bird's eye cameras? (If you have a limited, you should have the four-camera configuration cameras)
the in dash information features?
steering wheel controls?
We don’t have the Birds Eye cameras in our 2016 but yes, everything still works.
Only 2017-2019 Limited Platinum models have the bird's eye four-camera system.
@@PictureTime can you pull the eco mpg info?
Do the back up camera lines move when you turn the wheel like the stock one does? Or does it loose that feature with the new screen?
It takes the same feed from the car that used to display on the other screen.
good video other than you speeding up through the trim removal parts and not showing the connecting of the new unit.
I remember everything working fine there but we sold the car in September so I can’t remember fully
@@alittletlc9139mine still works too and I just swapped it with Apple car play. Idk if that helps. Probably depends on the head unit you bought
@@brando4k I bought the one featured in this video. I’m assuming you got something different?
@@alittletlc9139 yeah I’m not sure which one I got it, I got it installed at a local foss audio
Hey quick question. Does the device have wired apple carplay also? For example if u wanted someone else to connect to CarPlay, do I have to turn off Bluetooth and they have to connect, or can you connect via usb
Just wireless CarPlay. Corded android I believe. You have to disconnect to let someone else connect.
Plz help !
Contact Viabecs support. They are fast and will help you
Bonjour comment faire pour l’acheter sur amazon
Do all the cameras work will it work with the 4 camera set up
We only had 1 camera and it worked fine
But you've lost the built in NAV and other settings that allow vehicle control like the hatch setting and diagnostics. Personally, I think a better option is the CAR SYNC TECH Android Auto/Car play adapter - you can keep all the factory head unit functions and auto-connect wirelessly to Android or Apple phones. It also gives HD video quality of the Android Auto/Car play. But this unit does have a very large display (but no volume nobs). Nice video though.
Hi do you have a particular car sync tech recommendation? I want to retain the panoramic view & rear cam feature
Also see the FAW - says it works with birds eye view.
Have a link to that ? Thanks !
Which one you recommend in Amazon 🙏
Actually there’s a mini VCI Toyota tech stream which allows you to control all the settings of the car from your obd2 to laptop…. You can even turn off the seatbelt dings, hatch height, etc
Great video! I’m also looking at the Junsun which is a bit less expensive.
This system is compatible with andoid auto correct? Cos im having connection issues with original system in my 2019 highlander
Best to connect with Viabecs support for compatibility questions. I think the system is different in our 2016
How did you reach out to support? Was it via e-mail to a yahoo account? I am having issues with the backup camera, it showing up in Black & White and the imaging is broken up/distorted.
I did. I messeged them through Amazon Marketplace. They got back to me very quickly.
Was the camera AV plug the correct one?
Any issues with the GPS being installed upside-down and under the dash.
Also, the additional plugs that were not used, was one of them for the usb that's in the center console or the back seat
360 camera option is working too?
We don’t have a 360 camera so not sure but the reverse camera works great
Hi, I just installed this today. But if I put the car on reverse, it does show the back up camera but the audio goes out. But if I put it in park or drive, the audio is fine. Is there a resolution to this?
Nevermind. Found it. 😅
Where did you find it? I’d like to adjust that on ours too!
@@PictureTime Go to regular settings. On the left scroll down and select reverse. On the main page scroll all the way down to reversing volume control and set it to max. ...great video, btw!
Do you have to be connected to WIFI or Hot Spot the whole time you are driving?
No. Only if you want to stream movies to the screen or if you are updating the he software on the unit.
How did you contact support - I can’t find info anywhere on Amazon?
There was a link to “contact seller” on my Amazon order.
Thanks, but curios; why your wife was keeping her phone attached to the magnet in front of her after having the new screen?
Just a convenient place to put the phone so it doesn’t slide around the dash or fill up a cup holder
Does backup camera works too?
Yes. Backup camera works great
I installed mine the other day and everything seems to be working great except the backup camera.
Our camera feed seems fine. Perhaps you can adjust the resolution in settings. Not sure. Anyone else experience this?
Did you ever figure this out?
Did you get the Android 11 or 12 unit?
That’s a great question. The link in the description is the exact unit we got. I’m not an Android guy and am just using the app so that Apple CarPlay works, so I’m not sure which version it is.
What’s the PIN number for Bluetooth?
Contact Viabecs support.
dumb question from old geezer here but is this unit practical for us Samsung Galaxy phone owners? Plus i do use XM radio all the time in my non JBL 2019 highlander. Assuming you can use factory satelitte antenna if so? thankyou great video!
It will likely work better with a Samsung phone as it’s an Android based head unit. I think you can run XM as well but I don’t use XM or Sirius now so I am not the best person to speak into that. Anyone else tried running sat radio?
Did you lose your fade control when you installed this?
No
@@PictureTime I am a bit confused how this works.
I get one as you recommended, but it’s not working as you showing in your video
I'd recommend contacting customer support for assistance.
Does the car settings menu still work?
Yes
@@PictureTimecan you show me?
The wifi is what allows you to have wireless android auto. Bluetooth can't support the speeds carplay needs
Apple carplay works through Bluetooth. There is some latency in on screen commands but it works and is still better than the factory stereo
@@parkerdeyoung1228 yes you have to use NTSC as no other option works and that may be due to factory camera which has lower resolution
@@pradeepnatekar Yes I believe you’re correct. I imagine it is the resolution of the factory camera. It doesn’t really bother me much to be honest. The mic quality on phone calls is really the only feature that bothers me.
I’m doing to do it in I’m 2016 Highlander
How reliable is the wireless connectivity?
@@corbenatorany update? Is the sound that bad?
@@tala9499 yes, I was able to get the sound dialed in! There's one particular setting in the sound menu called "navi mixer" or something to that effect that has to be turned off to get the the audio to cooperate.
To that end, I have a growing list of questions I plan on emailing Viabecs when I can convince myself to sit down and do it about the functionality and compatibility with the vehicle... just gotta will myself to do it.
