"The best car to modify, is the car you already own". Very awesome. I'm still working on saving up to modify my car, and this has gotten me excited to start. Just got to save the money... ahhh the car life is such an expensive hobby.
I think I should make a slight correction to that statement, "The best car to modify, is one you've used before." I owned a Dodge Dart, it got totaled, but I still have parts for a Dodge Dart and I still plan on making one AWD. Ben was right when he said what did but it was just for his situation, not all situations.
sometime the best car to mod, is one not many people mod. my second car i hated it, then grew on me. then i noticed you could get this and that and make them decently fast. it makes you appreciate all cars and what people do to their cars. at least for me it did.
Almost teared up, I too have got the 3rd gen zx2 dohc 5spd man coupe as my first car, it came with issues , this is the first car I'm working on, but I will not give up on it, I need a couple sensors and a new fuel pump but when it runs good it runs pretty damn great. Working on this car has taught me alot about mechanics of cars. Everyone around me says I should sell it, but I'd be damned and maybe a couple grand in before I let it go.
Man I just bought my second car it’s an 03 escort with a 5 speed she’s got 37500+ and still kicking I love her and can’t wait to mod her. Way down the road I wanna build the engine, but first we go lower and get a body kit and paint
At the 2:07 the cylinder head says "JOHNP scribed into top right of side of the cylinder head. My Dad did the porting and polishing and flow benched that head.
"The best car to modify is the one you already own" So True. Saab 9-5 Aero with way too many mods to count and getting more everyday, not quiet to the gutted interior, I call it my poor man's four door GT car.
I will try. In the mean time the latest pictures of it can be found on some the Saab facebook groups or online in various locations, search for username DrunkieTheBear
I have an 02 zx2 and this is essentially what I want to make it. It was my first car and is my baby. It currently has a locked trans so its stuck which is part of the reason I think it time to start tearing it apart. Love the build! keep it going!
Gears and Gasoline Same the most desireable tends to be a "authentic"Mk3 RS1600 Turbo or a Mk2 Mexico they can command high prices for what they are mostly because those that weren't wrapped round a tree, either rusted or were driven very hard. Almost bought one myself till I saw a 1978 Rover SD1 with the 3.5Ltr V8 and Twin SU carbs.
James Brand Thanks, but I already know that one Escort! I only knew the euro one, the one that everybody knows! With the "another one" I meant the one in the video... ;)
This is exactly what's happening to me xD got a Ford escort off a friend of mine it was their grandma's car that was handed down to them and they passed it to me for 600 I ran it stock for a few months and the head gaskets cracked so I sat with it for a few months cuz I have no car know how but one day after alot of reassurance from a car junkie friend of mine I got the balls up and ordered a master gasket kit water pump and timing belt and dug in once I was in my friend would tell me what everything I was taking off was before I knew it I had a pretty good understanding of my car's layout and how to work around it all and now I'm looking at a new air intake, I wanna put in a new transmission, the paints fantastic which I was stoked about it just needs clear coat, and my friend put in a system when her grandma passed it down it just rattles a bit cuz I have to get new door panel clips but I basically went from like having light repair knowledge to digging in the engine and now I'm set on modding my ford and getting the most out of it for as long as I can it's a great little car
I'm buying one in the morning, and I'm significantly more stoked on it now. And I was actually pretty excited in the first place because I see the potential in it.
This is what being a car enthusiast is all about. There's always faster cars, but it's about the passion to make yours, well, yours. I love that shade of blue too!
I have a 99 Escort Zx2 Sport, manual transmission, DOHC and I love it. I've had the car for about 4 yrs. I bought it for $300 w 180,000 miles. I knew what I was potentially getting myself into but figured for $300 I'd give it a shot. I like to work on cars, I do all the work on this car and I'm teaching my daughter as well. SHE CANT ALWAYS RELY ON A MAN but CAN ALWAYS RELY ON HERSELF! I knew I wud have to replace parts over time..like one after the other...lol BUT that's what happens when you got an older vehicle running with old and new parts. I'm not a big FORD fan but I knew the parts aren't too expensive and pretty easy to work on and fix. Today I have 258,000 miles and I just ordered a new starter which will go in tomorrow. Still, with that many miles the engine is still strong as ever. The smog guy told me this particular engine is one of the best engines Ford has put out. Though I've put a lot of money into this car, far more than what the bluebook value, I'm keeping it forever. It's fast, it handles great and it's just a really fun car to drive. 💋
I've thoroughly enjoyed your videos TO date.....it has been amazing to me what you've done to your ZX2...I owned a 2000 dark green ZX2 with THE VTEC engine & a 5 speed manual. I did some modifications while I owned her(i.e. replaced the air filter with a KnN which gave me 7% better performance & 3-5% jump in MPG & every so often, I'd add some octane booster to a full tank of gas & would have synthetic oil in the crankcase, which also made a difference !) I even did a 'neck & neck'race with a BMW Z-3 coupe. I had her from 2007 to 2012; at which time I traded up (I thought) for a 2008 Focus also with 5spd manual & what turn out to be a dog of an engine. Recently I acquired another ZX2; 1998 dark green w/ tan int. This time I'm gonna be spending more time on her & do a few more things like you did as I've already got a daily driver. CouId you offer any tips or suggestions? I would love to know how to attach a turbo...and I definitely want a 'Borla' muffler installed....If you have the opportunity, please respond. THX.
I have this exact car, nearly same circumstances, aaaaand am thinking of upgrading in the same manner . thanks for giving me hope that this car can do stuffs I want it to.
In a very similar situation. Have had my stratus for 10 years. Not my first car. But slowly got into racing. Built what I had, finding out that they used the chassis in super touring. Still not done.
I have a 99 escort se it’s a 4 door and I’ve had it for about 4 days, spent 500 dollars on it and it has 51,000 original miles, and so far I’ve dumped 500 into it, I plan on keeping it and keep building it. Great little car.
I got a 98 zx2 as my first car a couple months ago, it was my friends but he sold it to his uncle when he couldn't fix it, then I bought it and continued fixing whatever it needed. It has an Sr intake from the junkyard that my friend got for cheap and it's a great little daily
So true... You've summed up what alot of people think/feel... Not everyone wants/needs a 1000hp internet badass. ... Some of us just want OUR car to be a great, fun driver that WE built...👀👍.. nice work..!
Craig Cundiff The handling tho, is perfect for that range of power. The design is so perfect for street driving, it's not even funny. Everything works perfect even when over the limits. You feel that limit as an extra sense and adapt, such a great platform. Check out the contour & mystique; they are heaps of fun!
that was my first car and i thought it was pretty fun to drive.. shredded like 3 clutches but nothing ever went wrong with it but plugs and wires. pretty damn reliable engine. im pretty sure its crushed now :( pour one out for all the cars we lost boys
I have owned four ZX2s. Three 1998s and a 99. I will be the first to say they have their issues but all around they are great. Bone stock I saw 100+ on dirt roads and it never complained when I threw it sideways. The motor that comes in it is prone to jump timing but it's a $250 fix when it happens and it usually only happens when you are really pushing the car to it's limits. On dirt I could run anyone and on pavement I could keep up with any 90s model V6 camaro or firebird. I have a 2010 mustang now and I still love driving my ZX2. What you have done to yours is the path I'm looking to take just geared a little more towards rally. Now that it's not my daily driver, I'm not afraid to strip it and id like to talk with you about turbo given you have experience putting them on the ZX2s.
I own a 2000ford escort zx2 and lemme say i couldnt agree with you more my dreams a 300zx tt but for the moment the build dream shall go into my ole blue❤💯
great job modding it ! not sure where you got all the money and time for this but I own a stock zx2 and love it !! its a great car stock, very light ! great mileage ! handles well and corners well. I got 160,000 miles and hardly any repairs ! amazing little car !
Going to buy a very clean 99 tomorrow man. Not gonna turbo it. Just bolt ons galore and a good tune. Swerved to miss a deer in my '12 mini cooper s which I loved dearly. Learned to slide a fwd car in it and was heartbroken. I have so much confidence this lil car will endear me. Its wheelbase is one whole inch longer than that of my mini, and only a second slower in the 0-60 category. If I can milk 200 crank horsepower cheaply... I will be tickled and have all the fun I'll ever need. Let off the gas and turn in sharply right at the apex :)
I race these things during the summer and these engines are amazing they never stop running and love high rpms. mine is full caged, bored .050 over and a basic refresh using a g16mr trans instead of the stock g15mr it has 4:10 gears opposed to i think 3:73.
Definitely the same kind of fun I'm looking for out of my ZX2, but i took a different route that has yet to be tested. I took more the Frankenstein route with a KL V6 turbo and a 5-bolt conversion (both out of a want to keep cost down and part sharing with my Probe GT). I loved watching the build videos on this thing, good to know that I'm not the only one holding out on the 'ol BG chassis. Hopefully i can figure out this here TH-cam thing and get some videos up when the Forzda Proscortege awakens in the spring!
My first car too. Sitting in driveway for years. Recently clutch went on my 07 WRX. Went back to this, and it reminded me why I got into tuning. It's got full bolt ons, and in a lot of ways I like it more than the Subie. Not only a reliable tank, but honestly not that much slower than my stock WRX either. Faster and more agile in the twisties for sure. Could smoke a stock 86 anyday 😎🤓 I'd say it's a sleeper, but over 2500rpm, the race header and catback get a bit loud 😅
I have to admit I cheated a bit and waited til this build was closer to the end before I looked back into it. Mostly because I was doing the same! Finding parts and building up something people tell me is stupid: a 1997 4 door manual Accord. The point is what makes you happy right? I can afford much faster cars and do bigger things with them, but instead I choose to go a route no one even considers and pick the one I grew up enjoying because I tuned one in the first Gran Turismo back when it was a championship podium car and dominated its class. Hopefully I'll be able to document more of my build soon. It's tough being in Minnesota since the winter currently is blistering cold and all I can do is accumulate parts. Great job on your build! You're so inspiring! I'm hoping to build a NA motor similar to the 90's JTCC touring car for mine, but for now it's a stock car with.... Volks on it LOL!!!
WhiteCharisma, look into a video called Foofy on Jafromobile's channel. This is very relevant to your Accord build, even if it is of a different generation.
S/r shift knob . S/r gauges. I love it ,car looks good I like the blue.kinda looks like kickerzx2 car. I am running probe pistons ,eagle rods. Arp studs , have a gude performance head with a set of web cams in mine )
im definitely looking forward to purchase a mitsubishi mirage coupe or either mazda protege to build since i see that the cars are underrated but i see potential
Great informative video! I've basically have the same motor, blacktop, JE pistons, eagle rods, billet oil pump gears, Newman valve springs, Mamba GT2871r turbo. Megasquirt 2 ecu running on E85 in a mk2 escort.
How did you blow the transmission twice? I’ve got a 2000, and have plans on tracking it/daily driver. Keeping it largely stock, have a K&N Typhoon Intake, Headers, and a muffler delete. Going to swap in a CWQ3 PCM for that 146 HP, +16HP and +13lbs-ft of torque. Coilovers, and the West Wings body kit. Removed the spare, tools, and jack, and will swap the battery for a AntiGravity lithium. Really don’t want to destroy my transmission, I run it somewhat hard with stock levels of power around the backroads. It’s a fun little car, budget build, holding me over while I save for a 2nd Gen Porsche Boxster S.
Looks like a Focus motor from the 00's. Which NA is already a peppy engine. Hopefully the Protege's firewall isn't as close to the alternator as the Focus's, but it looks like you got lots of space. Nice build cool story.
HEY MAN, YOU HAVE A HELL OF A SET-UP THERE. I LIKE THE BLUE PLUS IT LOOKS LIKE YOU'VE GOT SOME PRETTY BIG PLANS FOR THE INSIDE....I CANT WAIT TIL YOU GET IT DONE.......MAYBE I COULD USE SOME OF YOUR IDEAS ON MY OWN '98 ZX2...RIGHT NOW ITS PRETTY STOCK WITH THE 'ZETECH' (?) ENGINE & A FIVE SPD. MANUAL....I CALL HER 'THE FROGG'...ITS THE DARK GREEN EXTERIOR PAINT- I JUST BOUGHT THIS LAST YEAR AS A PROJECT CAR. I HAD ONE 11 YEARS AGO; A 2000 ZX2 W/ SAME COLOUR, ZETECH ENGINE & 5SPD TRANNY.....AND I HAD SO MUCH FUN WITH IT BACK THEN, I WANT TO DO IT AGAIN.
I am in the process of building a zx3. This is pretty awesome to see. Im not going into it with as much money as you have. Very much a budget build over here. I am looking to make around your power levels, maybe closer to 300 even. Qualife LSD is what I am going to run. Cannot find anything else.
I've got a mk1 focus zetec amd love it. Incredibly reliable despite what people think but modding them gets pricey which ive got a honda for that generally
My friend Travis had a red one he had handed down from his monm and his trans fucked up 2 times too so I'm sure it's issue they all have until it's fixed with updated parts
My second car was an 01 Zx2, first manual. These cars are extremely under-rated, they were 2200-2300 lbs stock, made 130hp/135lbft and it was really unexpectedly quick, especially compared to it's contemporary peers. At the time there wasn't much that you could do to the car. Einbach had lowering springs, I believe Flying Lizard made some strut towers and anti roll bars, could be wrong on the company. Regardless it was tough times and I wish I put more time in on it.
Actually, this is the second gen Zetec. The second one has black plastic valve cover. The first gen has all an alloy cover :) They are called silvertop vs black top.

no reason to sell it for 1-2k, might as well keep it

Saab 9-5 Aero with way too many mods to count and getting more everyday, not quiet to the gutted interior, I call it my poor man's four door GT car.
DaveVQ Make a video on it
like ofit driving
nvm you made a video ofmit but can you make more I subbed btw
I've got an automatic trans for sale
Watches from the UK, "Its a Ford Escort but not as we know it Jim"
I love the escorts that you all have!

Haha right?!
I honestly didn't even know that there was another Escort model…
;)

James Brand Thanks, but I already know that one Escort! I only knew the euro one, the one that everybody knows!
With the "another one" I meant the one in the video...
;)
never thought an escort could kick so much ass
MJO Gaming escort zx2*
come to the u.k and see the escorts we have here
You are the greatest inspiration to me and my 99' ZX2

This is what being a car enthusiast is all about. There's always faster cars, but it's about the passion to make yours, well, yours. I love that shade of blue too!
love this build, I'm 3 years in on mine and haven't even began yet.

It's fast, it handles great and it's just a really fun car to drive. 💋
This was an incredible engine. Friend of mine had no idea what they had and still wouldn’t sell it to me when I offered above bbv
i commend u for your'e individualistic approach for car choice and making the best you can with what you got
Just watched this build top to bottom. Loved every bit of it. THIS is what it's all about
love it love it love it....we need more under dog cars like this in the lime light thats why i bought a B13 sentra se-r
Make me miss my SVT Focus. Had a Procharger on it and all the supporting mods. It was awesome. Love the ZX2. Keep making update videos.
The progression of the content quality in this series was cool to see.
That shout to the BJ protege/familia got me all excited as a Protege owner. Awesome build

VTEC is Honda. There is no such thing. You must be referring to the Zetec 2.0 DOHC engine our cars come with.
Literally just bought a '99 zx2 for $1200 as a beater but this has changed my mind, other than paint the thing is clean as hell. Yours is goals.
How’s it been going paint wise??
I have this exact car, nearly same circumstances, aaaaand am thinking of upgrading in the same manner . thanks for giving me hope that this car can do stuffs I want it to.
Its a Ford Silvia! Wait no its a Nissan Taurus ... wait, i'll get in a minute!
That said, its bonkers good. Well done :D
It's a ford escort now shut the fuck up.
that intro is literally me after every mod i've done
In a very similar situation. Have had my stratus for 10 years. Not my first car. But slowly got into racing. Built what I had, finding out that they used the chassis in super touring. Still not done.
This video literally speaks to me. Ive always wanted a miata or 350z, but i already have an escort which im now realizing can be a great car
never imagined or seen an escort like this before or that it could be modified to something like this truly a unique build, keep up the good work. 👊
i just watched this whole build from start to finish and enjoyed every second of it. nice work Ben and team
I have a 99 escort se it’s a 4 door and I’ve had it for about 4 days, spent 500 dollars on it and it has 51,000 original miles, and so far I’ve dumped 500 into it, I plan on keeping it and keep building it. Great little car.
Thanks for sharing your story with your ZX2
I really enjoy it
you should get David to review it when you get it all buttoned up 👌 great vid as always!
Inspirational & unique build. I love it
It's been awhile since I saw this video and it's actually pretty inspirational
u made ur first car a dream car that thing is clean and sick A.F. congrats on ur build
From september 2000 to november 2007 I had one of those Ford Escort ZX2, in blue of course.
My first car was an Escort Zx2 as well. So many road trips and good memories with that car... And I also blew the transmission twice too :D
Man this just keeps my motivation for my 99 zx2 to awesome
i want to put the same engine in my european Mk.4 escort from 1989 , build looks awsome!!
I got a 98 zx2 as my first car a couple months ago, it was my friends but he sold it to his uncle when he couldn't fix it, then I bought it and continued fixing whatever it needed. It has an Sr intake from the junkyard that my friend got for cheap and it's a great little daily
I'd like a small Ford like this to drop in a Yamaha 3.0 V6 from first gen Taurus SHO
Son of Tamriel Only if it was rwd but I'd rather go with the high revving mazda kj 2.3 v6
It's be the 3.2 which is the same engine but I had a 90 taurus with the 3.0
So true... You've summed up what alot of people think/feel... Not everyone wants/needs a 1000hp internet badass. ... Some of us just want OUR car to be a great, fun driver that WE built...👀👍.. nice work..!

Never seen one of these cars before but i really like what you have done with it.
thanks!
Solid work. I miss my ZX2.
1:13 Cosworth had the original design running in 1967.
Z to the who? X to the 2! Escort baby! I thought you knew!
that was my first car and i thought it was pretty fun to drive.. shredded like 3 clutches but nothing ever went wrong with it but plugs and wires. pretty damn reliable engine. im pretty sure its crushed now :( pour one out for all the cars we lost boys
If it's enough to gap civics and some v6 mustangs, it's good enough for me.
I have owned four ZX2s. Three 1998s and a 99. I will be the first to say they have their issues but all around they are great. Miss seeing this car, can we do a campaign to bring the OG back? Doesnt have to do racecar stuff just street car stuff is fine.
I wish!
I own a 2000ford escort zx2 and lemme say i couldnt agree with you more my dreams a 300zx tt but for the moment the build dream shall go into my ole blue❤💯
My first car was a red Zx2. Loved that car
I had a 98 zx2 w a 5 speed. It was bone stock, and I couldn't believe how quick that little car was. I suprized a lot of Honda owners. Lol
i really like this escort didn't like them before but this is SO racecar with the rollcage plans and the color the wheels awesome car
great job modding it ! not sure where you got all the money and time for this but I own a stock zx2 and love it !! its a great car stock, very light ! great mileage ! handles well and corners well. I got 160,000 miles and hardly any repairs ! amazing little car !
Greatest zx2 ever built
And surprisingly 4 people fit in it well
P.S. the blue exterior is incredible.
My 5 speed 98 did 0-60 in 7.8. Ioved that little car, it wasn't fast but it was a sleeper for sure.
Real nice build man
Great video guys and keep up the awesome work as always.

That car is sick! I wish I kept my first car to be able to do this
Like this color it complements the design
Definitely the same kind of fun I'm looking for out of my ZX2, but i took a different route that has yet to be tested. I took more the Frankenstein route with a KL V6 turbo and a 5-bolt conversion (both out of a want to keep cost down and part sharing with my Probe GT). I loved watching the build videos on this thing, good to know that I'm not the only one holding out on the 'ol BG chassis. Hopefully i can figure out this here TH-cam thing and get some videos up when the Forzda Proscortege awakens in the spring!
Does anybody know what spoiler and sideskirts he is using?
this is righteous i have a 98 escort zx2
My first car too. Sitting in driveway for years. Recently clutch went on my 07 WRX. Went back to this, and it reminded me why I got into tuning. It's got full bolt ons, and in a lot of ways I like it more than the Subie. Not only a reliable tank, but honestly not that much slower than my stock WRX either. Faster and more agile in the twisties for sure. Could smoke a stock 86 anyday 😎🤓 I'd say it's a sleeper, but over 2500rpm, the race header and catback get a bit loud 😅
What rims do u have I own a 2000 zx2 5 speed and those rims look amazing
same thing happened to me lol I picked the lexus is300 because I liked the looks then I found out it is very great platform to modify
NA 2JZ af
Arp studs , have a gude performance head with a set of web cams in mine )
looks really good, good stuff
im definitely looking forward to purchase a mitsubishi mirage coupe or either mazda protege to build since i see that the cars are underrated but i see potential
great vid as always.
That's sick
Zetec kicked in yo!
I have been modifying zx2 since 2003. I currently have a built turbo 03 zx2
Looks like a Focus motor from the 00's. Which NA is already a peppy engine. Hopefully the Protege's firewall isn't as close to the alternator as the Focus's, but it looks like you got lots of space. Nice build cool story.
Im hoping that this is still sitting around and itll eventually make a come back
I hope so too..
Very well said man!
Great music in this one m8!
It would be awesome to see Matt Farah check this on One Take or something once it's broken in.
I personally love those cars
I am in the process of building a zx3. This is pretty awesome to see. Im not going into it with as much money as you have. Very much a budget build over here. I am looking to make around your power levels, maybe closer to 300 even. Qualife LSD is what I am going to run. Cannot find anything else.
Sounds so good
Dude I was just watching your Florida to Alaska trip and to see my car modified 😂
I've got a mk1 focus zetec amd love it. Incredibly reliable despite what people think but modding them gets pricey which ive got a honda for that generally
thank you. Just thank you.
My friend Travis had a red one he had handed down from his monm and his trans fucked up 2 times too so I'm sure it's issue they all have until it's fixed with updated parts
That looks like a first gen focus zetec, not a first gen zetec in general from 1992. But it's very nice, well done.
such a cool car
My second car was an 01 Zx2, first manual. These cars are extremely under-rated, they were 2200-2300 lbs stock, made 130hp/135lbft and it was really unexpectedly quick, especially compared to it's contemporary peers.
At the time there wasn't much that you could do to the car. Einbach had lowering springs, I believe Flying Lizard made some strut towers and anti roll bars, could be wrong on the company. Regardless it was tough times and I wish I put more time in on it.
Actually, this is the second gen Zetec. The second one has black plastic valve cover. The first gen has all an alloy cover :)
They are called silvertop vs black top.
