  • Driving the Ultimate Spec NEW MST Restomod // Millington Diamond 2.7. Welcome to the new episode, where Jonny Smith heads back to North Wales where MST Cars (MotorSport Tools) manufacture brand new 'Escort' Mk1 and Mk2 restomods to order.
With an engine and gearbox combo worth almost £50,000 alone, this is probably the most expensive spec of road going MST you can order

Am I Wrong to assume cars like this don't really appeal to Americans I mean the escorts and Cortina or whatever else there was all the small Peugeot cars and especially all the British Leyland stuff it's just good that there's so many different cars for people to like there's a lot of the times when you show British people and and they have a huge car collection I'm just thinking to myself I wouldn't really want any of this if I had unlimited money to buy the stuff but then again who gets excited like me to see old pristine lexuses and 80s mundane Japanese cars and cars like a 94 Buick Roadmaster Estate Wagon a 93 Supra or an 87 Chevy Suburban

No computer nannies, no torque vectoring, no electronic diffs, just bring whatever driving talent you have to the table and let 'er rip! What a glorious car! Long ago, when we rallied a Datsun SSS, I looked with longing at these machines--and I'm still envious. To hear them beating through the woods at 4 in the morning, with all else silent was amazing. Our local rallye was the Press On Regardless, 1200 miles of vicious roads, spread over 3½ days. Sigh. Those were the days--and this was the car. Thank you for this. I guess you can tell what side of your question I'll come down on...

As a child of the 1970s in the UK I feel that fast Fords are in my blood. I currently drive a latest gen Fiesta ST which isn’t remotely similar to one of these cars but I like to think that a 10 year old version of myself would still approve of my choice! If I had the money I’d definitely be buying something like the car in the video over a Porsche or any other modern super car. I’d probably choose something similar to the car in the video, big arches and spotlights, some modern creature comforts inside just maybe slightly less extreme than the one featured (although I wouldn’t turn it down if the owner changed their mind 😂)

For me it would have to be a N/A engine too, perhaps the big daddy but i'm not convinced i need that much power, and with a manual gearbox. I also think i would go for the mk1 body, with the wide arches. That's such a classic/fantastic look.

A MK1 Ford Focus restomoded, - an estate? Kitted out with the 5 cylinder, 2.5 Volvo motor + auto box out of a 850 est, I drove for miles, for a mile muncher, daily driver. Fully soundproofed, sound system etc!!!
Every video is a treat, Johnny
Hope the Allegro is finished soon!!!

    I've never been a Ford fan, but. . .
That exhaustt sound alone is almost worth the cost of entry on it's own. I think mine would have to be a bit quieter inside though. So, probably not the sequential box. Otherwise, holy hell, what a thing. You just made my week Jonny. Amazing.

Up until now, I've never seen a sequential gearbox in a road car in action except Mark Higgins' WRX STI at Isle of Man. I like the continuity of the wailing exhaust note during the upshifts.

Kudos to the editor and cameraman on this one Jonny. Looks proper top end stuff. Plus the least chodiest of shifters I've ever seen. Also loving that you've taken styling tips from fuzz townshend😎😎😎

What a fantastic job MST are doing of keeping alive the MK1 and MK2 escort alive. Growing up in the 70s my mum had a Mk1 and dad had numerous Mk2's. 50 Years on these are still fantastic looking cars and to be built brand new is something special.

Jonny, thank you for sharing cars like these. I’d take one over every supercar, every day. In fact, money no object, this would sit in my garage alongside a Tuthill 911K and probably not much else! My MST would be the same running gear, but with a cage, Peltor headsets and a Cossack livery..
I’ve thoroughly enjoyed your vids this year, thank you for all you share with us. Have a very happy Christmas and an even better/busier 2024! :-)

If your getting one of these its for nostalgia... with that in mind id quite like mine with a pinto on 45s, type 9 5 speed box, slipper diff in axle on leafs and tramp bars, narrow body on 6" rs wheels with 185s... fake patina yellow with mex stripes...and a pair of rose tinted glasses in the rs glovebox🤣

Hi Jonny, these cars from MST are phenomenal and thankyou for showcasing a customers car especially in with the scenic backdrops of northern Wales.
You are a gutsy presenter to drive such a powerful car in the wet.
I drove 105E Anglia’s fitted with 1600 GT crossflows 40 years ago here in Australia, no need for a heater.
I hope that you can find a 105E Anglia barn find in 2024.
To answer your question, $300,0000 Australian is out of my price bracket for the MST MK2 2.7.
How about an MST 105 if they could build one 😊
    Merry Christmas

You have to love these MST Cars .... all the nostalga of the Mk2 Escort for me (my first car) and all modern reliability, safey and performace ... like you say "Who wouldn't want one" ...... only problem is that at this kind of money they are well out of reach of the vast majorty of the market they could have for this car...... But can you imagine if they made a less race focussed and more standard road car as well ... A recreation of the 1600 Sport springs to mind with all modern running gear and no need for massive horse power.. 4 seats, modern engine, geearbox, running gear, decent suspension and brakes but not rally or racing car .... just a decent road car for the Mk2 enthusiasts and sent them out there for like 30-40k they would need to expand fast to meet the demand globally for those babies ... just a dream though sadly

I grew up with a MK1,so same drive train MK1 body, but that MK2 looks beautiful, don't need to drive it fast, you can see it's ready, that sort of price is lottery win, normal folk could never afford stuff like that, back in the mid 80's i had rear disc's from a Chrysler working hand brake, back then no one believed it,it stopped on a dime, later when pennys were more abundant,i built 2.1 pinto with Kent RL1 breathing with downdraught Webber's IDF44,back then Capri 2800 i where the csrs to beat,I used to pass them with ease, proper fun times back then,so the spec on these new motors,it must be a jet with after burners, beautiful cars but well out of reach for most of us, insurance must be putting alsorts of clauses in the policy(tracker ghost etc).👍💯

One dark night, by Llandrindod, at a T junction in my 1275, waiting for some bright lights in the distance to come in to view. It was Mk 1 with 4 artificial sun cibies on the front being driven by Somebody. Sounded fantastic, no way could I catch it, could see the lights disappearing up the road. Maybe it was Jonny in a previous life!

I like the MK1 best but the MK2 is awesome too and would own either if I could. As for the drivetrain I would like a nice high mpg sporty 4cyl nothing too fancy, and the wide body. I would drive it daily so it would have to be easy on the ears and fuel.

My very 1st car(in 1980) was a MK1 wide-bodied Escort, with a bored out to 1800 Lotus twin cam engine
with a full roll cage, and no back seats! It was the most exciting, visceral experience I've ever had! I'm 60 now and Ive jumped out of helicopters to ski & snowboard the back Country of British Columbia, Alaska and many other places around the world!
I've done skydiving, cliff diving and countless other "extreme" sports! But nothing ever compared to howling around B-Roads all over Scotland, in all weathers..........what is it they say about "chasing your first high?".........I've owned and driven many fast cars over the years, but watching this, I may have to return to the UK just to buy something like this.........I live on a fairly small island, so I may not be able to drive it every day, but fuck it!

Having lived in Mk2s as a younger man, and spent the seventies in cold forests watching the rally cars, this is my idea of heaven. So far out of reach for us normos though… 😂
I’d have a 2.5 Duratec with an H-pattern, 6 link rear axle and 13” wheels if possible, but that drivetrain does look very exciting.

If I win the lottery before this illness takes me, I'm buying a range rover 1st, only so I can travel to order one of these things of absolute driving heaven. MK2 only because when they were scrap value I had 2. 2 liter pinto in one. Wouldn't go in a straight line on full throttle in 1st or 2nd 😂 I love your enthusiasm, helps us live the moment with you 😊
