@@craigconey9971well the car itself says RS4ti, but the argument stands. It's an xr4ti built to look like this. Either way it's a nice car. Call it what you want.
Larrys got an eye for unique builds, I saw him walk past that Ford in one of the other videos on YT and was hoping he would make a feature of this car and he did not disappoint..
Back in the early 2000s I owned two sapphire cossies and an escort cossie. You absolutely did such a great job I’d never expect anything like this to come out of America
I grew up with these in Ireland and did 2 projects in College on Cossies. The South African market 3 door Sierras had the Mustang 5.0 V8 of which I was always jealous. The original engine in the Sierra RS had a second set of injectors so the cars with head studs and minor mods could make 500 hp reliably. I suppose the 2.3 in reminiscent of the XR4ti but the 2.0 from the Sierra RS Cosworth was a superior engine, bred for racing. I think the 3.5 ecoboost would have been a stunning unit to drop in here. If the 5.0 V8 fit I bet the V6 could with mods. That front bumper though, got to go. Original RS500 with the ducted brake cooling vents where the fog lamps would sit. I see you added the last generation tail lamps too from the later gen Sierras. Nice. The only 3 door Cossie (clone) with AC too. Congratulations on it. I’d buy it in FL - How did you guys do the 3/4 rear window conversion?
Im not sure about the US cars but the 2 door shell without the 2 part rear window wa only available as 1.3L Sierra and the 3 door cosworth . I think the SA cars and US cars were all the same as the UK XR4i cars so they either cut the metal out or they got a three door shell from Europe. And no, the Cosworth engine was not designed to go racing. The 2.0 Cosworth engine only special because of the head and turbo. The rest is just a plain Ford 2 litre Pinto which was available in the Cortina and Granada. That is not to say that it didnt do well when it was sent racing though.
Yeah you’re right about the pinto block. When the Sierra sales were in the doldrums, Ford sent that block to Cosworth. The engine was built from day one with a minimum target of 500 bhp with 8 injectors and a garret Turbo. The road going cars would all retain the the 8 fuel injectors but only 4 were active: An Intercooler was also added to drop inlet temperatures. That pinto block was a beast, but no Ford head could be mated to make the power for the World touring Cars, to beat the Nissan Skyline, the BMW M3 and the Mercedes 2.3-16 Cosworth.. Cosworth built that head specifically with the pinto block as it’s foundation. Amazing really. As for the rear 3/4 windows, all 3 door Sierras had the one piece, except the XR4i, and that was adopted on the XR4ti when Ford tried to make the Sierra a world car. The US DOT rules, mandated the US style bumpers, the rear fog lights deleted, the headlights and front foglights changed. The 2.3 liter in this car is the XR4ti block that came from the 4 cylinder Mustang. I never liked that engine but it could meet US emissions, and it fit mod free, so the XR4ti got that 170+hp, which was better than the Cologne 2.8 V6 in the XR4i. Unfortunately in a culture where V8’s were the norm, and 6 cylinder engines were considered basic, the XR4ti was always doomed to me with a 4 cylinder engine. Even Sierra Cosworths sounded like diesel fiestas at idle. All of this makes me think that 3.5 twin turbo ecoboost would be a perfect engine for this project car.
The 3.5 ecoboost engine is really heavy and sits up high the 2.3 ecoboost is a good swap to replace the 2.0 it has more torque and they have forged internals from the factory the only weak point of the engine is the turbo and engine block other than that put some performance spark plugs in it, a better head gasket, aftermarket intercooler and e85 you have 360-400whp and 400+ wtq.
The reason for the 2 piece glass in the US market was because the single glass did not meet the requirements for rollover protection. I owned many of these back in the day.
In Argentina we had the Sierra XR4 coupe with the split rear window like the Merkur, but with the rear spoiler like the cossie. And with the 2.0 carbureted lima engine. it was very popular with the touring car racing against Renault Fuegos, Peugeout 505, VW Fox. even now is still sought after for rally and drifting because its rwd
The Sierra XR4i came out about 3 years before the Sierra Cosworth, they thought it would be good styling & make the car look different on the performance model, Cosworth then used the base model 3dr shells with the one piece window, hence why cossies have those windows
@@Sharpey187, my Dad owned an 86 XR4i... Awesome car to drive and looked way different to anything else on the UK market at the time... Oh and not forgetting, it was a superior handling car compared to any offering from the German brands...

"Oh I knew this car since highschool"... We didn't have cars until college and most of us had Vauxhall Nova's or Mini's. How the ever loving did this friend get his hands on this piece of euro spec fastness.
In the states we got the Ford Sierra badged as a Merkur. It was a massive failure in terms of sales and by the 90’s when he would have been in high school, you could find these for about $500. Even today, these cost maybe $4000 at most over here. They’re just not as desirable on this side of the pond.
As a Brit that lives in the Ford Cosworths natural development area/spiritual homeland in Essex, England this is a lovely reimagination of the Cosworth hatchback. As a kid i used to fish with my dad right by Fords test track in Boreham, Esssex and we used to hear Cosworths and RS200s being severely thrashed/tested! A great soundtrack to fish too haha! These cars go for CRAZY money here these days, especially the original RS500. To think these cars were fully stripped out to super lightweight and then the Cosworth developed Ford engines tuned to 500+bhp all the way back in the 80s! I believe that the Ford Sierra Cosworth (in its various guises as in RS500, hatchback, Sapphire, Sapphire 4x4) is one of if not THE most successful racecar EVER made!
Distressingly beautiful build. The mixology of modern & vintage, US & EURO hits the spot - you guys have got those telling details just right. Absolutely stunning. 🏁🤩

The attention to detail here is next level. The 80s modern feel they were looking for is perfect. I wouldn't consider many cars that aren't Nissan badged as I'm a lifelong Skyline guy but I'm truly impressed with this car.
What an incredibly impeccable build! I love the “OE+” modern vibe they went for, it’s tasteful, but not wild. Absolute home run on this build! This is well done and top notch. I wish Ford made them like that today. I might be tempted to buy one. If I could get it in AWD, it would be even better.
The 2 liter Duratec is also a very popular swap for these cars here in Europe. That engine is also available in certain US Ford models like the MK1 Focus or Escort ZX1.
The XR4Ti was such a cool car! I got the chance to drive a couple when I was much younger. I wish I had bought one when I had a chance. My first car was a Merkur Scorpio, which wasn’t nearly as cool. At one point, my dad owned over half the registered Merkurs in the entire state of Missouri 😂
I’ve always wanted one since 94. Heard a booming stereo on my way to my sisters in the next town over on my bike. Took a detour to see and saw the Merkur in white. The wing had me sold.
Pretty awesome guys , as a Brit from that era I was at first kinda expecting the conversion to have gone too far . Fortunately the mods are spot on for your market and some nice original detail kept . Loving the colour too . Even here in the UK parts are thin on the ground. Maybe I would have stuck to GPA 909 suspension etc but that’s just me . 👍

When i was a kid i had a crush on the Merkur XR4ti, as a young adult i lived in europe and got hip to all the Cosworth stuff we were missing in america, then around 2010 i started seeing these ecoboost cars running around with monsters under the hood. I started dreaming of ecoboost swaps like this but it takes a special eye to put it together so well, to me this is a perfect car, and what Ford wet dreams are made of.
In the late 80's I worked at a shop in Houston (Autohaus Kaiser). We imported European cars and modded them to meet EPA specs. I remember bringing in a few Merkur. One was a wagon, I think the model was called the Sierra. I remember test driving it. Very nice car with good performance at the time.
Stunning I'm 50yrs old from the UK and these were the halo cars of my youth. If I remember I probably see about 2 in my lifetime and absolutely spazed out! Perfect apart from the steering wheel which is an absolute monstrosity, seriously makes me want to relieve my stomach of its contents, no wonder Larry didn't give it a mention! But apart from that an absolute throw back masterpiece!
From UK bloke seeing these growing up this one is absolutely stunning. Absolute perfection. Everything is just “wow”. Comparable to a Gunther Works Porsche 911. It’s been given the perfect blend of US muscle car it needed.
Have never been that into this body style but the build is out of the park! Just love it! Of course the video work is incredible too! For 50+ yrs it's been muscle cars & trucks but I would be happy to park this in my garage. I would not change a single thing! Nothing.
The RS4Ti namesake pays homage as well as captures a modern twist, because in the UK, the Sierra was the designated 4 platform also. The XR4, XR4i and XR4x4 being to the RS Cosworth what the ST is today. The XR2 was the Fiesta, XR3 the Escort. Amazing times with some amazing cars and it's awesome to see one with a touch of today applied to it. 😊
Your car looks fantastic. So nice to see a US tunner do there take on the RS500. Realy great quailty work and the style looks so fresh and new for a mid 80s car.
I would say that is the baddest car you've ever done on your channel, and I've been watching you pretty much since you begin doing TH-cam. I love it. I had one in high school. Love it Larry.
Wow! That is a beautiful car! I'm not even a "Ford" guy, but that build is delicious! Everything about it is top shelf! And that color really brings it home. Excellent work.
My dad olny had Sierras when i was growing up. (my mum an XR3i), i strong many hours in both models. This is a real nice homage to the cossy. Paint is looks mint.

Incredible modern build for the Merkur. Absolutely spot on amazing. That front end is exceptional. I do think it looks a little naked without the second rear spoiler, but in all, a fantastic piece.
They have truly improved upon a legend of a motor aesthetically. Taken an already good looking classic and beefed it up to the absolute max. It looks incredible. And as much as the cossie lump is awesome, the modernization of the engine and electrics is so appealing

You could and can - ford sierra sapphire cosworth 4x4
That car is sick. Attainable the man said 😂😂😂. That thing is at least 70-80k in parts and body work
This cossie restomod is insanely cool would love too see one with a 5.0 coyote in it
There is like millon of those at least this one is more original
This fits more with the original car which had a 2.3 turbo Lima
Nah yall don’t know , BARA IS KING
I do remember back in the day people replacing the stock Merkur motors with motors from the 5.0 fox body Mustang GTs
Yeah but V8 swaps aren’t unique anymore.
The 2 liter Duratec is also a very popular swap for these cars here in Europe. That engine is also available in certain US Ford models like the MK1 Focus or Escort ZX1.
No it isn’t a popular swap, the cosworth YB kicks all of them! 🤔
That’s so cool to hear, in the uk the ford scorpio also got the cosworth engine aswel.
We might have owned some of the same cars at some point. I owned the largest collection that I knew of in KS back in the day.
@@bassntruck are you left with any of the cars now???
@@robocop3961No, I sold my last one about 8 years ago. And then the massive lot of parts shortly after.
@@bassntruck damn they are worth loads now but at least you owned them cars 👍🏻😁 not a lot of people have!!!
I saw a new old stock header tank go for £400 ($550) last year 😳😳
@@realMaverickBuckley I can imagine something like those prices especially for the rare RS500 stuff like inlet manifolds . Even E36/46 M3 stuff is becoming more expensive and there are certain ‘hard to get ‘ items.
Pays to save everything
This has to be one of the most impressive builds I have ever seen
How these older cars have soul and the new ones are just all digital dash and screens and wireless chargers everywhere. Makes me sick that one day these old cars will be gone and forgotten. Thanks for sharing this with us.
Forged absolutely produce this car today for both America and Europe and they would hit a massive home run !!!
One of the finest builds I have ever seen. I deeply appreciate this beautifully stunning mechanical artwork !!!
All british lads born in the 80's drooling over this
Yup
Guilty 😅
Have wanted to swap a ecoboost into a XR4TI for a little while now. Glad someone did it. Looks amazing.
That is an absolutely sick build. I love it. The colour is fab! Question is how much would this cost to replicate? Give us a kit; please!
Absolutely stunning. Im English so just seeing a Sierra is awesome but this dude abd his colleagues have SMASHED IT.
Removing the independant trailing arm rear suspension and fitting a solid axle under it is a step backwards.
You need to brush up on your car knowledge.
This car doesn’t have a solid rear axle. You’ve taken a step backwards yourself.
@@kaijumoto Look at the pictures! the guy even said they fitted a 8 inch Mustang rear axle,so try selecting your brain before engaging your mouth. I have probably forgotten more about cars than you will ever learn.
@@kaijumoto He is right,in the video you can see the `cart` axle. You have shot yourself in the foot there and notpoliticallycorrect has shot you down in flames.😂😂😂
@@notpoliticallycorrect1303 maybe have a look here and tell me that this is a solid rear axle. See how it is the car we are talking about? Look at the back bumper. Yeah, thought so. lol

Seeing that ecoboost engine in there was soul destroying. You've ripped her heart out and given her a pacemaker. Evil man!
If it no longer has a Cosworth engine then it's not a Cosworth anymore.
It’s not called a Cosworth though.
i grow up on the backseat off some sierra cosworths , my dad was a huge rs fan in the 80's .
this is one off the most beautiful cozzies i have seen ❣
I paid 4k for my merkur where the hell can you buy 4 for 1000$
Picked up a 89 running and driving for $800 3 days ago guess its pure luck
When i was a kid i had a crush on the Merkur XR4ti, as a young adult i lived in europe and got hip to all the Cosworth stuff we were missing in america, then around 2010 i started seeing these ecoboost cars running around with monsters under the hood. I started dreaming of ecoboost swaps like this but it takes a special eye to put it together so well, to me this is a perfect car, and what Ford wet dreams are made of.
This is a great build.
Very impressive detail.
NICE
Oh dear.... what a waste of a 3dr😢
Nothing.
Absolut Hammer Arbeit, einfach perfekt woow wow wow 👍👍👍👍👍👍
The RS4Ti namesake pays homage as well as captures a modern twist, because in the UK, the Sierra was the designated 4 platform also.
The XR4, XR4i and XR4x4 being to the RS Cosworth what the ST is today.
The XR2 was the Fiesta, XR3 the Escort.
Amazing times with some amazing cars and it's awesome to see one with a touch of today applied to it. 😊
imagine a dark horse motor in one of these....love the way these look
A colour I use in a lot of liveries. It works on a lot of older cars. (Jag e-types, Porsche 356, Alfa Guilia sprint etc) Awesome build 🤙
Hello, can you tell me the name of this color?
My dad owned an RS500 Cosworth when I was a kid. I thought it was the coolest car back then. This just reminded me of how awesome they still are ❤
I've had several Merkur xr4ti's and this by far is the nicest I've layed my eyes on.
If that was a mass produced car, it would sell hand over fist, GORGEOUS CAR and extremely well done!!!!
Your car looks fantastic. So nice to see a US tunner do there take on the RS500. Realy great quailty work and the style looks so fresh and new for a mid 80s car.
What a unique car! Super clean and everything looks OEM!
this car is mindblowing. the 80s recaro material and the interior and the backlight soo oldschool but nice now.
My mind is blown. The quality of work and the thought behind it and it just looks beautiful and bad ass. Oh my god
I’d love to see what cosworth could do to the engine, that would be a complete modern revamp
I had an 86 XR4Ti and this is the ultimate expression of a surprisingly good car back in the day.
So cool. My dad had an XR4Ti when I was a teenager. It was so fun to drive. This RS4Ti is amazing!
This is probably the nicest and cleanest modified car I have ever seen.
The car is so simple yet its a full blown custom build.
Not knowing anything about these cars before seeing this I would never doubt you if you told me this was a restored factory built car .
Well done ... wow 🤯🤩
This is OEM+ taken to perfection. And on a Ford, not a VAG! Incredible details. 🙌🙌
This is best customization of any cosworth I've ever seen.
This is hands down one of the most unique and amazing machines I've ever seen. The custom work is so perfect !
This "car" was all about the engine and you destroyed that ☝️🤪🤪
I'm not a car guy, but this is a beautiful build.
The cosworth YB motor is better than the 2.3 eco boost! 😂 the age between motors aswell!!! 😂😂😂
Congratulations! What a great rebuild. I loved my 1987 Sierra 2.0 GLE. A limited number of XR8s were built in South Africa to make them eligible for local racing.
Best and most favourite sema build I've ever seen, a massive well done to the builders 🤙🏴
*Woah!! Scrapping the Cosworth 2.0 turbo for a 2.3L Ecoboost? No thanks. Cosworth and Ford engineered an incredible powerplant.*
this guy did an incredible job on this car. I would 100% daily drive this thing !
Reminds of the new impreza p25 restomod. Old but new. Looks outstanding. Respect for bringing a UK car to the US forefront. Hasn't lost it's original presence at all despite the mods. ❤
So well thought out, designed and finished. The interior is stunning.
