  • @lanie1509

    Even if the hair grows back fine (and it won't always) it does nothing to help them. The hair keeps the sun (and the heat from it) from hitting their skin directly. Shaving can also lead to sunburns since the fur doesn't protect the skin.
    When the fur sheds it creates places for airflow to cool the dogs skin naturally. Even huskies are usually fine in hot climates because dogs regulate their temperature through panting, and they have really good respiratory systems.
    You rarely see dogs have issues in summer as long as they have water and they don't have a smushed face like a pug, bulldog, or shih tzu. You can ask any vet, the vast majority of overheating in dogs is caused by the dog having a snout that is too short and has little to do with coat length.

    • @lanie1509
      @lanie1509 5 ปีที่แล้ว +43

      And based on all the undercoat during shaving, seems to me the dog is hot because no one was brushing out the undercoat so it could regulate its temperature. This seems like a case of someone taking the easy way out even if it potentially has more consequences.

      This is speaking as someone who has a half chow who's fur was shaved by a family member without permission. It has been almost 2 years and his hair hasn't grown back right. I had never seen him more miserable in the summer than when he was shaved.

      My dogs get shaved in the summer and sometimes even in the winter (we live in a fricken desert state and city so its hot hot, then its cool/cold) because of the ticks they get all the time. With their long fur it is hard to remove ticks :/
      It might be a different story if the dogs were always outside, but we only take them outside to use the bathroom.

With our pure Chows we will never buzz them. Our groomer has said you should never buzz a double coat unless for medical reasons. She washed and blew our dogs coats when the were shedding and they look great now no more shed. Just because this is something you have gotten away with please don't try to influence others to believe this is a good idea.

      Leah Shalek WOW you sound like a peach! You must be so sweet with the dogs you groom 🙄🤦🏼‍♀️ Btw it’s not only about whether the coat grows back or not it’s also about the dogs comfort. Double coat helps cool the dog in the heat ( it’s pretty damn hot in Texas in the summer ) & warm in the winter. Also protects certain dogs from sunburn. I’d never shave our Great Pyrenees

    • @leahshalek6144
      @leahshalek6144 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@midlifemenopausalmukbangs815 Actually I am a peach and the fur grows back on ALL the dogs I groom. I also happen to live in Israel, where our sun is at least equal to that of Texas, if not worse than.
      You may be surprised to learn that fur on SINGLE-coated dogs ALSO keeps them warm in winter and cool and protected from the sun in summer. It is NOT just double-coated fur that does that. Funny how that works, huh?
      You must be quite the scary groomer if you don't understand the most basic function of dog hair/fur.
      So thanks, but when it comes to shaving double-coated dogs---of which I've shaved many who have NEVER had problems growing it back---i think I'll take advise from groomers who at least understand *how* fur/hair works.

    Sorry, but, as a groomer, this is sacrilege to me. It might not happen the first time, but with each shaving this dog WILL eventually get clipper shock. I've seen it many times in my own grooming salon. From people who had gone to other groomers who shaved their dog without first warning and from people that were adamant about shaving their dog, even after we warned them of the potential consequences. It is not my job to judge the client on their personal taste, BUT it is my job to educate the client on what is best for their pet's skin and coat. Shaving a double-coated breed is not natural & is not best for that type of coat, just like shaving a wire coat is not natural or healthy. But hand-stripping is a whole other topic...and video.

    My problem with shaving double coats is not so much about it looking messed up when it grows back, but rather it's not an effective way to keep the dog cool. I know it's counter intuitive, but shaving the hair off actually makes the dogs more likely to over heat. Please don't take my word for it though. Just ask your vet.

A good groomer would be know how to remove matting that many dogs are prone to. Matting is very common thing with certain breeds of dogs. That doesn't mean they have to be shaved. I believe that it's easier to shave and less time consuming, than if you take your time to actually groom and style a dog's hair. You can shave more dogs in a day than if you actually groom and style their hair.

    "The hair is so thick." Yes, because he's repeatedly shaved and shaving a double coated dog makes their undercoat grow back thicker and thicker. His top coat may be growing back but it is damaging his coat in the long run. A good and proper brush and blow out of the undercoat will keep him WAY more cool in hot weather than shaving. Not to mention shaving them too short can actually cause them to be SUNBURNED. Don't do this to your dog, please!!

    It really depends on the dog, their breed, and genes. Like a husky I think would be better stripped then shaved, where as golden retrievers can handle shaving and clipping. Mixed breeds get more leeway because of their mixed genes. I mean if you're really worried, ask your groomer to shave a small patch somewhere inconspicuously on the dog (heart shape maybe!) around the winter or fall, see how it grows back, and go from there. I personally have a corgi/jack mix that has to have a summer shave down (compared to my poodle who goes in monthly) or she is a hot miserable mess. Usually Jacks and corgis both don't need that, but she needs it for heat and allergy issues.
    Remember guys, DeeDee is telling from her personal experience, she doesn't know each and every one's dogs personally, so judging her experience against your own experience with your own dog is a bit unfair. DeeDee is saying that in most cases the double coat issue isn't really that much of an issue as it's made out to be, in her *personal* experience. But for you, talk with your own groomer, test with your dog before you do anything drastic, and you'll all be happy, I promise.

    • @analarson2920
      @analarson2920 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      good points but I still would not shave down unless there is a health issue as the coat for any doublecoated dog protects them, to short and one asks for trouble, that fur protects the largest organ mammals have the skin, it is the first line of defense against many things.

    • @13thMaiden
      @13thMaiden 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@analarson2920 In most places you don't really need to shave down most dogs as their coats will do it naturally on it's own as long as you brush and wash them properly, but again, it's about breed, and also where you live. I live in South Georgia and I see huskies down here and during the summer I always wish the pet parents would properly strip their coat so that it's clean of left over winter coat (husky coats are made to trap air to regulate the dog's temp in the snow). A golden retriever's coat however is different, it was bred to make the dog more waterproof and warm in the cold waters while retrieving waterfowl. A shave down or clipping for them doesn't harm their coats and can keep them tidy (though I never believe in a straight to the skin shave unless surgery or health is involved, for any dog). ChowChows, which were bred as guard and fighting dogs, were bred with thick fur to protect them from bites and claws. They can stand clipping and shaving without ruining the coat. As for where you live, DeeDee and I live in very hot places (South Texas and South Georgia respectively), we see alot of heavily furred dogs in these hooooot summers and know their hassling is only doing them so much, and giving them a decent summer clip or strip to air the coat a bit and keep them cooler definitely makes us all feel better, especially since not alot of pet parents are always so good at keeping up the grooming.

    I had a dog that could have easily been that dog's twin...I had to do a double take! I never shaved mine down, but I didn't live in as hot a climate, and mine was spoiled rotten inside dog...so no need to shave. Just lots of brushing. so so so much brushing.

    I´m so sorry if I sound stupid, but can someone tell me why you should not shave double coated dog?

    I’m certain that this groomer really does mean well. But she doesn’t understand that the reason the dogs undercoat is so incredibly thick is because of the way that she’s been grooming him. She’s causing this overly thick undercoat by repeatedly shaving it. That dog is getting zero airflow to his skin because of that. If he had been brushed regularly, rather than shaved, then the undercoat would be thin and airy. That’s what people mean when they say shaving ruins a double coat. Not necessarily the look of it but the FUNCTION of it.

    Everyone is saying you cant shave a dog like this.
    I have an american eskimo, recently rescued but shes matted in many many places and cutting wont do the job. Is shaving ok in this instance?

      Mellon Collies Dog that is a question better answered by a verified professional, like the dog’s vet or a groomer that you are talking to face to face instead of the TH-cam comments section.

    Wow yeah we loving taking a dogs ability to self regulate away. Stop shaving double coated dogs!! Their hair helps them stay cool and warm during the seasons

    I need to cut my st Bernard's hair because my house is really small and her hair is causing troubles getting stuck in a lot of vents. ¿do you think that just cutting a little bit of his hair in order to make it shorter will damage her? I definitely not shaving her, but I need to do something.

      Daily brushing! If you have a long coated dog, then brush them daily just as you brush your own hair, I assume.

      breanna caitlin I have really short hair, so no, I don’t spend time brushing my hair. I appreciate your answer, but it’s not an answer to my actual question. I didn’t knew that this was going to be a problem when I decided to adopt my little friend (I know, I was a stupid for not considering that) but well, I took her out of the streets and gave her a warm and lovely place to live, so I assume that shaving her will not make me a monster. Have a nice day and thanks for your opinion.

    Shaving the coat may not hurt the hair but there’s no need to shave it. It’s like that for a reason it keeps the dog cool it’s like insulation

    Miss, I hope you are correct in your finding, a so-called groomer in Thornwood NY used a buzzer on my 6-year-old Corgi this past week shaving her butt down to the nubbins....I am absolutely livid!!! Only time will tell.......................????!!!!
