  • This Optoma 143X was sent in after the owner was unable to clean it satisfactorily and had colors flickering. I didn't find much wrong. Some screws needed to be tightened and the casing was not aligned but the owner was very close. I performed a teardown/general cleaning and testing.

    That's another interesting repair Frank. 146X is the model that they currently sell around here, a 500 Euro model including taxes. Heard really good things for the machine. Thanks again for sharing my friend!

    Took this model apart two weeks ago with help from one of your previous videos on a similar model. I was stuck on the two HDMI screws as well lol

      I have noticed eco mode causes "deposits" to build up on the arc points in the lamp. Standard or Eco+ run the lamp hotter and prevent the deposits from building up. I personally use standard mode as I want the brightness but Eco+ is also a great option to use.

    I thought flickering was caused by the dust on the light sensor but it can be caused by bad connections too. In most Benq projectors flickering is caused by the clogged or worn out blower fan.
    Nice overview of the optoma HD143X gives a good idea on how to go about cleaning it and save time.

    • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I still think it had some dust in the sensor housing but it came loose in shipping. I really couldn't get it to act up. The owner couldn't quite get it back together and wanted me to just kind of give it a going over and make sure it was OK.
      There was another model with the same power supply that had the output inductor start to melt and flash over when it ignited. I thought it might have been that, but the output inductor looked fine here. I've only seen that a handful of times but it was always that same brown double stack inductor on the ballast output.

    Thanks for doing these videos, they are very very helpful and I'm in an area that has no one who fixes projectors. I now have an Optoma HD28HDR that has 2 white spots for now. I was wondering if anyone knew what dmd chip the hd28hdr uses? Thanks

    Hi, Frank! Was recommended your channel over on reddit and have a question, if you would be so kind. I own a LG PH450UG LED projector and it started losing brightness about a week ago, until the day before yesterday, when it developed a heavy dark spot across most of the screen, rendering it unwatchable. It has around 2300 hours of use registered in the menu, and after opening it and clearing the dust with compressed air there was no change.
    The warranty is not applicable since I got it used, albeit with very little use. But it has been pointed out that this seems like a recurring issue with this model… What I’m trying to figure out is if this is fixable at all, or if it would be cheaper to just get a new one (though I’m not excited anout the prospect of spending 700€ on another Ultra Short Throw).
    Thank you for your work!

    • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks! I suspect you have a bad polarizer piece in the optical section. Its usually located after the LEDs and before the DMD. They melt and leave that spot in the middle. You may be able to find another piece but I have heard of people using polarizer film harvested from old flat panel monitors to repair them. There are a few pieces of plastic film of varying types that make lcd monitors work. If you have an old scrap monitor around you might be able to pull the polarizer film out of that and then cut it to fit.
      Otherwise I would really suggest looking at lamp based units over LEDs, at least for now. I personally think LED/Laser/solid state light engines are not quite there. They are close and likely will hit their stride soon but I see lamp based projectors still outlasting LED. They use about the same power and I think lamp units are built better. This is just my opinion of course. There are reasons where LED will be better so you do what works best for you of course.
      Projectorcentral.com has some great research resources for finding a new/used but good UST projector. I saw some Optoma's and Viewsonic's that used lamps that I bet you can find used for a reasonable price.
      I hope that helps, if you get stuck, I have an email address listed on the about page.

    I got it open, was only running like 10-15 min before shut down so figured why not. Question is theres a little filter on the side. Had dust caked on the inside (which seems backward for a filter). Wondering if I should just peel it off (held on by like a sticker) since I would expect the dust to be on the outside. Seems counter productive

    • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I dont recall ever seeing a filter in one of these. Are you sure its not just lint/dust caked together? I'd remove it if I saw that.

      That usually happens in the middle of the video! I'm almost finished some older partial videos that have repairs that were unsuccessful. I am sure some of the content will be helpful(tear down steps etc) but trust me. I have plenty that end up that way. The only reason I can fix as many as I do, is by experience. I have no formal projector repair training(electronics yes but not specifically projectors). Watching older videos I see a few things that make me cringe but hey that's life!

    Hey Frank! I have a 12 yr old JVC RS25 and I’m getting flickering on some start ups. Yet if I power down and restart it goes away. Has happened about 4 times in the past 120 hrs of use. Bulb just turned 650 hrs. Any suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated sir. Too heavy to ship and I don’t know of a technician I could trust in the Chicago area..? Thanks again for your incredible posts!!!

    • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Jeff! That is a tough one. It could be a ballast, but it could be a defective lamp. But the fact that you are at 650 hours, makes me doubt the lamp as a problem. I'd expect a lamp to show its defects quickly.
      One thought, if you are running in eco mode, put it back into standard. Eco mode can cause scale to build up on the arc points and cause flickering. Standard mode should 'clean' the arc points. If its already in standard... I'd have to know more. It's the kind of problem that could be coming from a few places and none of them are easy to check without looking at the projector. I do know if a guy in Indiana who might be able to work on it but I can't say I know of anyone in Chicago area directly.

    Also when I think he means flickering, mine does the same it changes brightness during some scenes making it a little lighter or darker. During the film Luka in the underwater scenes due to the shimmer and the random changes of brightness and shadows it caused it to go light and dark rapidly. I believe the problem is due to it being on ECO mode and low brightness.

    How do you change the bulb? Is it necessary to buy the bulb with the housing or can you buy just the bulb? Please help

    • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would buy a full housing myself but with the age of the 143x, I would buy whatever you can find. A bare bulb is perfectly fine as long as the old housing is in decent shape. the glass filter on the front of the housing is the important part. It must not be damaged. some dust is okay but no burn marks in the center. If you see that, you want to buy the full assembly.

    That USB connector....yuk, air must drawn in through this for it to get that clogged up, or it could be static attracting the dust. Glad you had gloves on...lol.

    Hello, I have optoma khd33+ 4k its white and the inside lid is yellow in tint from the heat. Id like to add a battery powered fan to help remove heat shall i place on the outside or leave it alone? I cleaned out all the dust.

    • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I wouldn't worry about it. The yellowing happened from the dust before you cleaned it. Once it is clean, as long as you check it every few months(I do it 2x a year), that should be more than enough. You basically put it back to "new" air flow wise so that is a good place to be.

    Hey is there any things not to do when cleaning thick dust off the coil and fan? Glove type? Wipes?

    • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nothing special. I wear nitrile gloves because it keeps my hands clean protects the glass from finger prints. Projectors pick up a lot of dander and hair from the air and I don't really want that all over my hands if I can help it. Aside from that, your only real goal is to minimize the dust build up as best you can. Projectors are designed to run happily with some dust. You don't need it to be spotless. The only real things to stay away from are blowing air directly into the optics when cleaning. You can force dust into the area with the DMD. Gentle air pressure to stir up the dust and a vacuum work well. Also a dry paint brush(unused) works wonderfully for loosening up surface dust. I would not use cleaners unless its made for lenses so you don't strip the coatings.

    I need to change my filter strip and clean but can not find filter but my project keeps coming up with change and clean fillter

    • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It probably has a fan issue that is triggering that. These are sold in other countries with filters. When the fan feels like its not working right/moving enough air, it will trigger that message.
      I would probably start with a gentle cleaning and see how that goes. If the fan is bad, they are pretty easy to change. I'd specifically check that lamp blower fan(turbine type). If you had a lamp burst anytime recently that might be the root cause. They tend to blow bits of glass into the fan motor when the lamp bursts.

      I suggest checking the mains fuse, then see if you measure low voltage power to the mainboard. A good visual inspection for damage would also be a good idea.

      Not usually. Some models sold in areas of the world with more dust have them but generally no.

    On my optoma 3d projector the picture is very slightly jumping up and down

    • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If it is 4K, try a 1080 signal and see if it stops. Most of the older 4K optomas use pixel shift. The solenoid for pixel shift can get wonky. If the colors are jumpy then Id lean more towards a color wheel issue(sensor or the wheel itself). Could you describe it a bit more thoroughly or share a video?

  • @jayes5066
    @jayes5066 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

    my flickering has turned into my bulb going out but after unplugging and plugging back in it works again so I'm guessing its not the lamp (at least I don't have to worry it was my pc's gpu going out)

    • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      might be the color wheel. If its light/dark flicker, then its a lamp/ballast(likely a lamp) but if its colors flickering that is a color wheel

    • @jayes5066
      @jayes5066 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @FixitFrank it's more like a signal flicker. Like a signal interruption and searches for signal again which is why I was suspecting my gpu. If it's not enough to trigger the signal search like the picture will be miss positioned during the flicker. Like old school scan lines for a sec before it corrects itself. I do get some dark light "flicker" seperately but I figured thats due to dynamic brightness setting. Oddly doesn't seem to be due to heat. When it should be at its hottest I dont have issues compared to when it's at the coolest Temps of the day or a fairly fresh power up.
