    I gotta make one for my tent floor. Like a ground mat, to stop sticks and poke things from destroying the bottom. Thanks for sharing.💚💚💚

    This is great, I have a hamper full of bags and I need a durable rug at my back steps. This might be the perfect thing and it will be out of the rain so it will last a long time. Thank you so much.

    this is pretty great we always have loads of plastic bags I was planning on making Matt's for dog food and water dishes and maybe store some for camping supplies to help keep the inside of my tents neat

      What I have done in the past for pet mats, is after it is all done, take parchment paper, and Iron the back of the mat. It melts the bottom, and makes it more likely to catch and hold any liquid slobbers. I set my iron to a high setting, and place the paper on it, and iron away until I melt a nice layer. It makes the mat stiffer, but now the mat will not be reversible.

    • @rebeccaking7902
      @rebeccaking7902 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think for the dogs I can sacrifice reversible because that's a great idea

    Thanks for sharing this..I'd been cutting the bags into strips and this looks much easier. SO many of my bags are white that I started doodling on them with permanent markers before braiding. They look kind of tweed-y.

    I'm curious why the 4 strand braid instead of a three strand?

    • @momeberhard5265
      @momeberhard5265  8 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      With 4 strands. the width of the strand is bigger, meaning you don't have to have as many rows, and you don't have to tuck into the loops as many times. It goes quicker.

    • @momeberhard5265
      @momeberhard5265  8 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      +Pokemon I live in PA, where plastic bags are used everywhere. Friends collect theirs for me. I have even asked grocery store managers for some from their recycle bins in the front of the store, and they have not refused. Currently, with oil prices low, they are going to landfills from recycling centers as there is no market for them, so it is more important to reuse them if you can.

    What is the advantage of braiding 4 strands as opposed to 3 strands?

    • @momeberhard5265
      @momeberhard5265  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      4 strands makes a thicker braid, so you don't have to go around the rug as many times. You can just do a 3 strand, but it will take longer.

    • @momeberhard5265
      @momeberhard5265  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, the only reason I braid with 4 strands is so it is quicker, as the rows are wider. If you are more comfortable with three strands, go for it! Good luck, and happy braiding :)

    I've been considering making those for dog kennel mats. Would your method of tucking the strand into the braid work for square mats as well as oval?

      would you show me how to do this as a square?

    • @momeberhard5265
      @momeberhard5265  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I haven't made these in squares yet, but have been thinking about it. What I was planning on doing was when I got to the end of the row, I would twist the outside two strands, and fold it over to the previous row and then start braiding regularly. I don't know if it would work, and because I am into my Christmas rush on my Etsy store, I won't be able to try or record it until after the holidays. But I encourage you to try it! You can start a new trend!

    Thank you for sharing! I've been making crocheted totes and baskets for the last 8 years from plastic bags. I give them to my friends and family. This is something else that I can do. How long do the rugs last?

    • @momeberhard5265
      @momeberhard5265  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Kim Scherzinger I have had a plastic bag rug that was crocheted from bags last over 6 years, and I had to get rid of it, not because it wore out, but because it was in a shady sidewalk, and it had grown green. These braided ones are about 4 x thicker, so I believe they will last years as long as it isn't where they will mold in shade.

    How long does one take you?

    • @momeberhard5265
      @momeberhard5265  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I really don't know, as I cut bags in advance and have them ready to go. Actual braiding usually takes me about 2 days of work, off and on. I usually don't work on one project long enough to time them, as I tne dto work until my fingers get tired, and leave it for awhile.
