Into the REALM of SPICE: MANADO, SO MUCH SAMBAL!!! North Sulawesi, Indonesia

- This is the 7th in the eight part Indonesian series and the first of two Manado!
No reason to wait for the heat. It was brought with this first staple Manado Breakfast, Tinutuan. It is a rice porridge usually cooked with something like sweet potato, pumpkin, and/or cassava. A great way to have a hearty breakfast. However, my favorite thing by far was the Nike Goreng. Greasy, fried fish that was nice and salty.
Next up, I went for Manado style Nasi Kuning. Arotmatic, light, fluffy, turmeric soaked rice topped with sweet soaked meat, potatoes, and then crunchy little potato bits! Add some kecap manis and sambal and you will have a sweet/heat combo that will blow you away!
I changed gears a little bit and took a break with some kopi susu and some Manado treats. The Panada wasn’t my favorite, but wow how I love pisang goreng with sambal roa!!! It really made me question everything as I have been a french fry and ketcup guy my whole life and to now to find something I like as much and maybe even more...wow.
Finally I went for a massive grilled fish dinner Manado style. That means open flame heat and then coated, covered, and smothered in chilis. In case that wasn’t enough chilis for you, they have three sambals, sauces, and just pure flavor sides waiting for you.
Lasty, I had to get something sweet so I headed over to try the Klapertaart, a Dutched influenced pastry that has had the locals fall in love with it!

Manado food is the most delicious and healthiest food in Indonesia ... I have lived in Jakarta for 5 years, in Yogya for 1 year and in Bali for about 10 years ... but, nothing can beat Manado food which is rich in flavor and colorful.
The best days of my life was the time when I was assigned in SULUT from 1991 to 1997.Those were the days I was able to savor the best foods in Manado,got to mingle with the beautiful and friendly people there.Seen those scenic spots on the mountains of Tondano,beaches of Bunaken.What a wonderful experience!

Loved your video. I have been to Jakarta and tried the Manado food at “Restoran Ikan Tude Manado”. The best food I ever had. I am an Indian, so I am all about spices and chillies. We regularly used to dine there and our standard was Ikan Maas Bakar, Ayam Rica Rica, Sambal dabu dabu, cah kang kung and rice.. omg heavennnnnn! I drool everytime i think about it. I so love Manado food. I am in US since 7 years and haven’t seen Manado food restaurants here. I so wish they had them here. I will definitely visit Manado in future.
They say Manado cuisine is spicy. Oh my, they meant spicy! Not only was it spicy sambal heaven, but the copious amounts of seafood had me feeling like I was never going to leave this place!

Manado porridge is the best porridge in Indonesia and their Nasi Kuning as well. If you fly with Citilink you can find this Tuna Yellow Rice on board. Yum. I'm drooling

my father was born in manado. my father is manadonese. everytime he went to manado he gave us biapong (manado steam bun pork with egg), nasi kuning manado (tumeric rice on leaf with cakalang fish). red bean ice,pork satay. much cheaper when you eat from warung or small business/restaurant where local people's open warung at their house.
