Would You Buy The 2020 Honda Passport Elite?

  • 2020 Honda Passport Elite review and the big question is, would you buy it? The Honda Passport featured in this review is the AWD Elite trim so it is fully loaded. The Honda Passport was all-new for 2019 and not many changes were made for the 2020 model year. We'll see how the 2020 Honda Passport fares against the competition.
I've driven the Mazda CX-5 as well as the Toyota RAV4. These are solid choices; however, Honda has always done a great job offering a phenomenal chassis and confident driving experience. I'm sure the new Honda Passport will deliver on these fronts and will help it stand out amongst the competition.

But I did lease mine at the end of 2019 and Honda was really giving a sweet deal. Got the EXL for $350 a month with only about $1800 out of pocket. That includes the tax and 12000 per year.

That’s exactly my situation. I’ve got a 2006 Honda pilot with 177,000 excellent miles on it and will be looking to replace it this year. But I am so torn between this passport, which is rather stodgy and doesn’t have all the bells and whistle‘s that the 2021 Hyundai Santa Fe comes with. Like you I do not need a third row. The size is perfect because this is actually the same size as a 2006 pilot. The pilot grew but I don’t need that length in my garage. So I’m so torn. Annoying thing in the Santa Fe is that they do not have fog lights! How can you not have fog lights? And yet they have so many more bells and whistle ‘s, including 360° camera and a larger infotainment screen and the digital camera for when you turn right or left with your signals. I understand for 2022 that the Honda passport will be doing a major design change. I love the idea of the V-6 engine, which is what I have in my 2006 AWD, I’m afraid they might eliminate this V6. I’m not in any hurry to buy, but I want to get one more new car before they take away my keys. (😂😂😂).

🤘I have watched prop 25 vids on the Passport and honestly yours is in the top 5. Your honest and natural speaking as like a friend talking to the cam is awesome. Caveat: I bought a 2020 PP Elite last month. And when you made the comment about the trans holding a gear.. it made me know someone else feels that 9 Speed (occasionally) searching. I notice it at low speeds too. But no one else has mentioned it till I watched your review. Thank you for letting me know I’m not imagining that feeling in the trans. Other than that I love it. I had a CRV and man, jumping to this and that 6 V-Tec is beyond awesome. Great video. 👍

I've owned my Passport 2019 for 4 months now. It is definitely bigger than my 13 years owned Sante Fe. I wanted the v6 which the new Sante Fe didn't have. It's solid ride. I love it. What I don't like is the traffic sensors. I live on curvy road countryside and the sensors detect things that aren't there. I turned off lane assist, but the head on break warning is still a problem, such as street signs, cars in opposite lane on a turn. Oh and the tiny drain hole by windshield blades to get the rainwater out, we have pollen and leaves that clog there and I have to be mindful to clean regularly. Small pet peaves, but a little annoying. I did look into the Sante Fe XL which has a v6 like my old one but couldn't find any near me.

Yes that’s my dilemma right now… Something like the Santa Fe calligraphy versus perhaps waiting for the 2022 passport in the hope that Honda will improve some of the styling… I do not like those tail lights… And give a 360° camera and a few more bells and whistles.

I picked up a new 2020 Passport Elite at the end of February 2021 and really like it.
    Pros:
Good power, smooth transmission, safety features, ease of entry/exit, plenty of room (I'm 6'1"), it's a Honda.
    Cons:
Gas mileage is pretty much as advertised and Eco mode does seem to help give you an extra mpg or two, but when you use it, your climate control operates at a slightly reduced level and you can tell throttle response is a tad slower. The ride on smooth highways at speed is great, but I find the ride on streets to be a bit stiffer than I expected. Nor a big issue, just different.
I've put just under 4,000 miles on it and am really a happy customer so far.

Two years later, how are you enjoying that Passport Elite? Any issues? Any regrets?

    • @1958zed
      @1958zed ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@bludragontruck9743 Hi.
I'm about to hit the 40K miles mark on the car, having driven it on multiple extended road trips from my home in San Diego to Yellowstone, Chicago, Arizona, Utah, Yosemite, etc., so a bit of mountain and mostly highway driving.
I've taken it on dirt/gravel roads in the Alabama Hills, but sedans can navigate those roads, too, without much risk or difficulty, so it really wasn't a good test of off-road capabilities for the Passport.
I would like to attempt a bit more light off-road stuff in the Anza-Borrego Desert where the "roads" are mostly packed dirt and sand, but the lack of good recovery points and the 20-inch wheels have made me reluctant to be too adventurous.
The new TrailSport version with its 18-inch wheels and more aggressive tires (still not true off-road tires) would be better for light off-roading, IMHO. (I like to do landscape photography as a hobby and was hoping to get into some more remote locations with my Passport. Maybe I just need to get some experience and confidence with my Passport's capabilities and give it a try.)
The other area that I really haven't tried yet is driving in winter weather conditions (snow/ice), so I can't speak to the car's capabilities in those circumstances. (When it does snow in the mountains east of San Diego, I generally avoided it because of all the crowds wanting to play in the snow. It's pandemonium.)
I've kept up with the scheduled maintenance at the dealer, and there have been no maintenance issues to speak of. That is, up until this week, when I received a recall notice for a cable issue. There was one other recall for a software-related issue that was resolved by doing a software update during a normal service visit.
Mileage has been okay. On my cross-country trips, I set the cruise control at or just above the speed limit and typically average 25-26 mpg. City driving is about 19 mpg.
I do love the amount of storage that the Passport has. There is a large hidden compartment under the deck in the rear and, with the rear seats folded down, I can fit a ton of stuff in the back. (I can also lie down pretty much flat if I need to and I'm 6'1".)
All in all, I'm quite pleased with my Passport and plan to hang onto it for a while.

After many enjoyable and trouble free years driving my Acura Cl-S, I was looking to move on to a new vehicle and first spotted the CV-R. The historical engine problems and Honda's apparent unwillingness to admit error and repair its problems killed that option for me. Then the new Acura RDX was announced. I had driven an older RDX several years prior, and it was a driving mess; no way. Then, it appeared that the new RDX would be equipped only in the current marketing trend with a turbo blown 2.0 liter and and a dash board control layout like the spawn of a one night stand between a a BWM and a Wurlitzer jutebox. Forget it. Then the Passport. Good drive train with well proven reliable components. Controls laid out for the convenience of the driver rather than the ad-man. Good features. Good price relative to the RDX. A no-brainer for me.

It is quicker than a 5.7 R/T Durango. Honda is working on “manning up” there trucks. See what the 2022’s look like. I’m looking to punt the Pathfinder I got stuck driving since the wife is at home. Hi Kevin, I can’t decided between the Honda Passport Elite and the Lexus RX350 AWD . I know you did a review on the Lexus too and I did watch both . I would love to hear your thoughts please .

Hey thanks so much for stopping by. Yea that's a tough one I think for 36k you could probably get some amazing Certified Pre Owned Lexus RX 350s.
Honestly that would be a superior vehicle but If you needed to have the newer brand new car with Apple Carplay and stuff, the Passport is nice. But I think a CPO RX is better

i just cant deal with the depreciation. id honestly just get a used lexus lx as if i want a suv capable offroad, and if i want performance i'll go for a used porsche cayenne. both are pretty reliable and can be had for same price as the passport, but are way way cooler

So the problem with "reliable" cars is yes they won't leave you stranded on the road but, parts cost a fortune when you need to replace them. You can do it yourself or take it to someone you know but you still need to buy the parts

I came real close on “talking” my way on getting the KIA. One: it’s hard to get one. Dealers can’t keep them in.Two: I’m still adjusting to the rear styling. Single exhaust output. What’s weird , I like the Palisades rear better but hate the front end. Three: KIA/Hyundai uses solid tappets in the variable valve timing setup. They have to be adjusted every 60k miles. If not, you might develop a tick.
