  • The Turba Philosophorum or Assembly of the Philosophers is one of the oldest and most important works of alchemical theory and practice. In it is imagined a great assembly of ancient philosophers to discuss cosmology and alchemical theory and practice. In this episode, I explore the history of this wonderful alchemical textbook along with discussing it's position in the development of the occult science of alchemy.

The notification of this video has come through just as I’m cooking breakfast for my family - I have my iPad perched up on the kitchen bench - and all the great philosophers in this household are discussing it - as the porridge coagulates and bubbles and steams - as the eggs turn from liquid to solid in the pan - as the fresh bread dough ferments and comes out of the bread maker- originally ground up grains - now transformed in a technological iamblicus into something entirely different - people forget the alchemy was about the transmutation of everyday things including the human condition - and how these metals and elements within our everyday things transformed - alchemical texts are in a sense cookbooks on how to Transform all things around us every day - just early morning thoughts of the cook/alchemist in a turbulent family of philosophers! Haha!

After listening to many if these presentations, and in light of my admittedly anti-religious slant, I'm gradually coming to the opinion that the purposeful obscuritanism of Alchemical literature and practice was a reaction to religious absutism's necessary suppression of the scientific impulse. Newton signaled the breakthrough moment when orthodox religion lost its veto power on science at the hands and pen of an Alchemist/mathematician/philosopher. This is truly the transformation of historical irony into comedy gold.

Yeah, it’s always been man’s search to claim God. The scriptures of the Bible are of truth, most agnostic fail to conceive what it is about. I know, have a gut feeling, the Star of David means the transfiguration of Adam and God once Adam, man, realizes there never was a transcendental meaning. The gospels explain the Transfiguration of the Christ; Father, son, and Holy Spirit. The point being the fall happened and people chose the fall rather than God. Satan is the phony god of this cycle and always has been ever since the Garden. The Uroboros is the one of the titles of Satan. The purpose of God is to live in a holy life, thus achieving worthy sacrifices such as the one’s of Abel sacrificing a lamb to earn God. Look, I know the prophecies came to realization. The serpent and the cross was fulfilled when Jesus was crucified. The bronze serpent of Moses was the mere symbol of Jesus; who ever looked at the bronzed serpent earned salvation trough faith alone by believing it will save them. There is so many symbols the word of God uses and it is epistemology in its own branch of science or knowledge. I don’t know if the Holy Spirit guided Jung, but certain symbols are verified by God.

I love this sort of thing and eat up these videos. That being said; I spent my life in Retail and tend to look at everything as a product to be sold. The the question that always comes to my mind is; Who bought this product? Who would buy a book of formulas that, simply, don't work? At least, I don't think anyone ever made gold from lead. Was it sold to people who just wanted a book on their shelf that would make it look like they were privy to ancient and mysterious knowledge? For that matter, how did Alchemy persist for centuries without success and with nobody ever making gold, or the philosopher's stone?

Just in case TH-cam cancels my question as spam because of including a link, to I'll add the same comment twice - this time without the link
Amazon has three different "versions" listed as available. One of them is half the number of pages and so I suspect is only either part one or two of the whole work.
One gives the author as "attributed to Arisleus" and is part 13 of a series of books called "The R.A.M.S. Library of Alchemy"
Have you heard of this version and is it of any value?
