  • what are the questions I hear about a lot when designing ships is what makes a class of ship a class of ship. For instance what makes a Corvette a Corvette in lieu of say a frigate or Destroyer. well in this video I'll try to clarify ship classes a bit starting with the humble Corvette.

one way to differentiate between a boat and a ship is that a ship tilts outward when in a turn and a boat tilts into the turn. submarines tilt inward therefore they are boats.

Corvette: the smallest 'propper' purpose built ships intended for sustained operation
Frigate/Destroyer: larger small warships, some guns capable of threatening larger ships in groups, some may focus on a task or weapon system.
Cruiser: A heavier ship with larger guns than smaller ships could mount, also able to mount even more secondart weapons
Battlecruiser: a very large cruiser or small battleship sized hull, mounting battleship sized guns but lacking the armor, posesing speed to escape what it cannot kill
Battleship: the heaviest of the warships, armored to slug it out.
Dreadnought would be either above or below battleship depending on how classes are being handled, but historically dreadnoughts were precursors to WW1 battleships and depending on the setting it may be a term for older less effective battleships.

Also, the Roci is officially 46 meters from the bottom of her drive cone to the tip of her comms array.
A large grid block is 2.5 meters to a side.
That makes the Roci only 18.5 blocks long if it were ported to SE accurately.

Homeworld was a huge influence for me so I tend to treat corvettes as the smallest warship in the fleet, and everything smaller is some sort of attack craft. In space engineers terms corvettes are the smallest large grids.
But as for role I make corvettes for all kinds of purposes depending on how they are armed and armoured. I'll have missile corvettes and gun corvettes and railgun corvettes etc. The main defining feature of my corvettes is that they are cheap enough to be disposable.
My favourite kind are light and fast with lots of rocket launchers because my ping tends to be too high for precision so I just throw out enough rockets that some will hit lol.

I started playing Armored Core on PS2 first then back to PS1 then PS3. I am waiting on the new Armored Core to go on sale though before I get it. I just bought(went on sale for 5.99) and started playing Asterox Imperium(Eve offline pretty much) as few days ago and it will be a while before AC is a thing for me. The majority of arguments for what the difference is between a ship and a boat are mostly antiquated from before the 20th century. If you were to ask a ship builder today they would tell you that ships have certain design complexities that make them more ideally suited for traversing the open oceans where as boats are less ideal and have limited range restricting them to coastal waters. Submariners call their submarines boats out of naval tradition from when they were called submarine boats and were restricted to coastal waters or were tethered to mothership via an airline. However in today's navy they are registered as ships and it shows in their title USS which stands for United States Ship. A submarines equivalent in space would most likely just a be a frigate or a destroyer that can cloak.
Understanding the difference between ships and boats I really like your established doctrine that corvettes have to be jump capable. Which is something I agree with because if it wasn't jump capable I would just call it a system patrol boat or maybe give it the designation of Cutter. I'd also like to mention that while it is true that corvettes are primarily long range patrol and scout ships they are also meant to be rapid response ships where they can quickly deploy and provide reinforcements as escorts. Which is why some corvettes are heavily armed such as the Soviet Nanuchka class.

    • @TheRezro

FTL capability is heavily lore dependent. But that is the usual dividing line.
Gunboats (I call it purely because it sound cooler) typically operate close to facilities.
Corvette should be capable to make comfortable travel between the planets.

In Aurora 4x, my ship classification is usually based on relative tonnage and fleet role. Corvettes are generally above 1000 tons, but their upper limit depends on the general size of other ships in the fleet. Between 500 and 1000 tons is sort of a grey area between aircraft and boat terminology, usually go for something like fast attack craft, and below 500 tons is where you get into "fighters" and "bombers". But in the beginning my frigates and destroyers might be 3000 to 5000 tons, but as facilities grow larger and the economy grows larger, the standard size for those ships also becomes larger, along with the maximum sizes of the largest ships in the fleet and the maximum size of a corvette also becomes larger.

Vide game classification is source for a lot of misconceptions. It is actually the role, not the size.

  • @TheRezro
    @TheRezro หลายเดือนก่อน +2

So my general comment about this issue. But first of disclaimer I would say only once to not repeat in every video. Ship Type (the proper name) is a role ship fulfill in the navy. Not a size! A role. And it is extremely dependent on in setting how big those are and how things relate to other things (this also change between countries and time periods, so same ship may have different classification depending on that, but the role still stay defined).
So what is a Corvette? It is smallest capable warship. Dentition (in modern sense) was for the first time used during WW2 when British need cheap ship for anti-submarine roles, after Destroyers grow too large for many smaller tasks. It is why it is sometimes defined also as "glorified gunboat" what is sometimes also used regard early Destroyers.
In context of SE, Corvettes are cheap, easy to mass produce ships. What are generally capable of interplanetary travel (usually have jump drive), but still are in high end of the mass produced. For example using ship printers. Many Corvettes also is capable of planetary landing, because they are small enough for that to be relatively easy and they tend to serve as auxiliary ships for moving between military operation zones. Despite being expendable, they commonly do have basic assembler setup and med bay in case of the crash. As they are expected to operate far from the bases.
As side note, related Gunboats are short range, mass produced, specialized heavy crafts. Quite commonly lacking any support equipment as they are expected just to do the job as cheap as possible and not go far from the base of operation. Tend to have cockpit instead proper command deck. Corvettes are that on steroids.

A corvette is considered to be the smallest class of proper warship (in the age of sail that meant it was "Rated). Everything smaller was considered a sloop-of-war, usually merchant or coastal ships in the age of sail pressed into service during a conflict.
In modern thinking a corvette is still the smallest true warship, anything smaller is usually a motor launch or patrol boat. Modern corvette focus on speed and maneuverability mostly armed with a single large cannon of some kind and an assortment of Anti-ship missile, SAM's or ASW equipment. Corvettes can fill many roles and often times work alone or in pairs separated from the fleet doing different tasks such as, anti piracy operations, maritime law enforcement, anti smuggling operations and fishery protections. while as part of a fleet or working independently as part of a larger fleet structure corvettes are just as useful, taking on ASW operations, ISR operations, screening, supporting integrated air defense nets. These last two tasks are depended on the specific design of the vessel but corvettes can also do littoral combat operations and support amphibious landing operations.
Corvettes are the smaller but equality versatile cousin to the larger frigates of modern navy's

Mh... I quite enjoyed the vid and it mostly fits with my own ideas regarding ship classification in sci fi settings. I'd love to hear more from you about other ship classes.
That said, I'd like to mention my own ideas as well, both for you and for other readers - hopefully some of what I'll say will make sense or inspire you guys 😛
For me, the difference between a corvette and a smaller craft is that a corvette is the first craft that has enough space on board that standing up and walking around is a real possibility and won't (overly) inconvenience the others on board.
The difference between a corvette and larger craft is the maximum and average mission duration as well as the degree of self-sufficiency (eg. due to supplies stored on board).
A corvette is usually meant for short missions, rarely more than a day or two. In fact, in my lore, corvettes are often used on missions (e.g. patrols) that are short enough that they only last for a single shift with the corvette returning to port at the end of the shift and swapping its crew out for the next shift. As a result, the on-board accommodations on a corvette are fairly spartan and may not even include bedding - if they do, then the bedding will have to be shared among several people (aka one person sleeps in it and once they are done, the next person sleeps in that bed).
For me the mission profile of a corvette doesn#t just cover patrols, but also the following:
    - border guard
    - anti-smuggling
    - anti-piracy
    - customs controil/inspections (e.g. for a port or planet)
    - escorting or transporting dignitaries or other VIPs
    - search and rescue
    - (limited) humanitarian aid (it simply doesn't have the manpower or cargo capacity to do more than a token effort in this regard)
    - mine laying
    - mine sweeping
    - ASW
IRL corvettes were also used for coastal ASW (anti-submarine warfare). in fiction I'd expect that to translate into some kind of role that focuses on detecting stealthy or cloaked ships.
For armament, i fully agree with you. The majority of the firepower of a corvette would be point defense and weapons designed to target small agile enemies (e.g. strike craft like boarding pods, ighters or bombers - and missiles/torpedoes).
That said, when it comes to firepower vs larger targets I tend to go one of two routes (or both):
    - I either add missiles as a versatile long-range option that can pack quite the punch (nukes hurt and can be fairly small)
    - or I add a spinal weapon of some kind. This takes up a lot of internal space though and is only an option on corvettes dedicated to active combat roles since that space has better uses for most missions (e.g. sensors to spot stealthy/cloaked ships or contraband).
I'm looking forward to future vids from you ^.^

I stopped the video at 5.09 minutes. Yes, mainly, this small military unit was designed as a sentry. Going back in time, precisely the 17th century, the definition of Corvette was born by the French to classify a sixth class hull definable as a fighting ship. six classes, the sixth included the shipping with a minimum of 20 artillery pieces, i.e. cannons, then falconets, mortars and more. a corvette was defined as such if it included 3 masts, the foremast, the main and the bowsprit, with artillery pieces between 20 and 28 guns. she reached 50 meters in length. This unit was used as patrol, order carrier, coast guard, exploration and assault on small pirate boats or boats of different nationalities. today this unit includes a minimum length of 75 meters, 2 76-100 mm units, 1-2 anti-aircraft batteries, 1-2 missile launchers, 1 landing platform for support helicopters. Putting today's characteristics with a future figure of the same, a corvette serves to patrol, explore, support, destroy fighters or classes lower than itself. Small size for 150 soldiers (officers and others), 2 small-caliber medium-rapid fire guns, 2-3 anti-fighter batteries, 1-2 missile launchers and a hangar for a support/landing vehicle.
