Are you kidding me she doesn't have the tone,range,power or ability to do this song justice. I enjoy her music but She isn't in Missora Hibari's class,she's not even close. Not to mention I don't think she was good enough at mimicry or foreign languages to get the words right.
If you wanted to give a black pop singer a place on this stage, it should have been Aretha Franklin, not Diana Ross. DR lacks the power and opera quality voice of Domingo and Carreras. Aretha could have held her own, and has proven it on stage, live, singing arias. Not often, as it's not her gig. You can find some videos here on You Tube. I did.
You are right in what you say, however, for this series of concerts of Diana Ross with Placido Domingo and Josè Carreras (which began in 1992 with the "Christmas concert in Vienna") which took place in Budapest, Osaka, Taiwan, Aretha Franklin it didn't go well, because they were countries where, unlike Diana Ross, Aretha Franklin was not well known.
Diana Ross is not an opera singer! However, in the concerts with Placido Domingo and Josè Carreras, Diana Ross has shown that she has (if there was any need) great ability and singing talent. Then, everyone is free to think what she wants ... but the fact is that Diana Ross (together with Aretha Franklin) is the most versatile female singer of all time.
