A beautiful performance. Those who like to criticize or diminish Ms. Ross' remarkable career have said that she did not have as powerful a voice as other female singers of the era. But, here again, she proves that power does not mean volume or rely on vocal gymnastics. She stands proudly by one of the greatest operatic voices of our lifetime & matches him note for note -- & even helps him a bit through this beautiful song. Her crystal-clear soprano is unique, instantly recognizable & still as beautiful today as 50 years ago. It is difficult to imagine anything more powerful than that.
It's not a criticism. It's a fact. That doesn't diminish how great she is.
She has clarity. It's amazing. She's low in the mix here though.

The songs that she sings, which are written by top writers require her to have a strong voice. For example, "be a lion" , "brand new day'" in The wiz and "home". Also, "missing you", "amazing Grace" and "one more chance" and "to love again". These are difficult songs to sing and take a lot of breath control, which is a form of power, especially while maintaining an immaculate pitch and tone. Now her light lyrical soprano voice carries differently from other voice types, therefore she may not be as loud; however, that doesn't necessarily mean a lack of power.
I'm tired of blacks from a certain echelon and want-to-be-down soulful white/other folks and those who try to be quasi-fluff minorities, who keep saying this only because she's a black woman. I don't hear that application to so many other non-black singers who don't sing as well as she can. My point is if she is singing something traditionally soulful, then the criticism is it is not soulful enough; however, if she sings something more along the purely adult contemporary line, then it's not loud enough. Go criticize a non-black woman! Go criticize Doris Day like that or or Britney spears, who can't even sing!

Just saw Diana at her at her 75th birthday bash at the Hollywood Palladium. She sang this duet that night with a playful Robin Thicke, who was obviously in awe of her. Her voice may have lost a bit of range, but the magic is still there, possessing such a distinct a sound all her own, that there’s still no one, past or present, that can compare, She’s almost ageless, has more stamina than those half her age, and seems to be having the time of her life, singing and dancing until 1AM. Watching her perform makes you feel youre witnessing true legend.
