  • A second Trump presidency would last longer than 4 years. Writer and political commentator Molly Jong-Fast joins Defending Democracy to discuss how a second Trump term would be different, the myth of the "moderate" Republican and the media's role in all of this.

A second Trump term will happen sooner or later b/c of the Heritage Foundation's Project 2025 that will simply change to Project 2029 or Project 2033... They're planning for it to happen with the next Republican President. The only thing that might cool it down is if we can get the vast majority of MAGAs in the House and Senate voted out.

Mark and his team are a part of those unsung heroes, doing this incredibly significant monumental work for democracy while we're off worrying~not that Trump will be elected, because he won't. Also he's just one person and he will die. The only worry is that maga accounts(what I'm calling social media trumpers because we have no proof that these are actual individual human beings) actually listen to Trump and look at Trump and know a good part if not all of his history~and still think he's wonderful. THAT'S a concern, at least until it all wears off. Trump will die and it wouldn't surprise me if it happened before November. I think there's just so much stress and amphetamines lack of sleep and a complete absence of actual food being consumed... The any miserable inside and out, morbidly obese idiot can manage without it killing him. He looks like a stroke waiting to happen as it is.

In this case, we fight for the ones in our past who fought for us, our kids and ourselves who love what democracy has meant to us and given to us. It's worth fighting for. Trump and his followers gave up on democracy. Fight thru voting, fight thru cooperating with other like minded people by defending pro democratic ideas, and keep calling these guys out 24/7. I was one of the Democrats who mistakenly thought that Trump could never win so I didn't vote. It wouldn't have changed anything regarding the Electoral College because I live in Brooklyn, NY, but I will NEVER do that again.

I’m not a Democrat, but I’ve been voting Blue since the 2016 voting cycle. There was a lot of apathy back then and people weren’t even all that concerned. But since the tRump era, I feel as though most Americans have become hyper focused, educated, informed, and determined. All of this is still concerning, even somewhat disturbing, but I feel as though we don’t need to be overly worried.

      YIKES!!
I'm shocked to hear people STILL say we don't need to be overly worried. I think many people are just looking at things trump has done in the past, things that have already been investigated, dissected, publicized, and "we understand all of it now", but not enough people are thinking about what is yet to come. I firmly believe that trump is hatching a number of plans,
      1) try to win
      2) if he Loses, STILL get into the WH by other means.
Trump has already got plans in the works through his Maga congress, coupled with his violent mob, to forcibly get back into the WH, much like his j6 attempt, but much, MUCH more organized, widespread, and likely, more violent.
Even in some of his recent speeches, trump doesn't seem to be stepping back from his dictator and national abortion talk, like he's not as concerned anymore, with getting more moderates, or independent voters, it rings of someone who plans on getting back in, with, or WITHOUT enough votes. I think we should be VERY concerned about that. 🇺🇲

Absolutely outstanding episode! Molly is fantastic 😊
You both touched on so many important issues, and I agree with you both. As a lifelong Bostonian, (I had to move to Vermont in 2018 because it was the only place I could afford that was close to my sons and grandchildren in Williamstown Ma the only upside was and is are my outstanding Senators and my Rep.) I knew how corrupt trump had always been, and the moment he was elected I told one of my sons that was watching the news with me that that man will not leave after four years; he said mom there's rules and laws and he has to leave at the end of four years...i looked at him and said I hope I'm wrong and walked away. We're both progressives.
I'm glad you ended on Ms RNC; I was disgusted and disappointed that NBC had hired her...WTF!??? I too, was so very proud of the MSNBC hosts that spoke up!!! I only watch one mainstream media news, and that is MSNBC; so this was a very disturbing decision they hired her. They never should have hired an election denier, a liar, and a participant of the insurrection. Thank goodness they came to their senses and listened to their long time, devoted team, and kicked her sorry ass out!
    Thank you both very much

I totally agree! Also a life long Bostonian, moved to Vermont in 2011, my daughter was attending Norwich University, and after a divorce, he got the only home I ever lived in... long run best thing that ever happened, I married a dairy farmer happily ever after! We only listen to MSNBC also and love Molly, she has foresight and is so intelligent always right on the money. My husband and I didnt vote for Hillary we voted for third party but never thought he would win. Shocked we were the next morning when we heard. Will never do that again! I was so stressed for those 4 years that my blood pressure was higher and after the coronavirus I became type 2 diabetic, I truly believe that pushed me along to be unhealthy, stress induced sickness... what a difference with a "normal" President! I pray everyday that blue prevails and having a daughter & 4 grandchildren 2 of which are girls, having a long conversation with the 9 year old last week about my mom, grandmother and myself having more reproductive rights than her and her little sister will if we cannot codify Roe in the near future with Democrats at the helm... and it's a good thing that they were all born in Vermont! Its a beautiful place to live and I have no regrets... only miss walking Castle Island everyday once in a awhile.

Seeing what is going on now with the Trumpers, I realized that this problem has been festering for about 20 years. We had a MAGA republican who became the head of the state party way back then. Although they weren't called that back then, the attitudes were there. He started a lot of turmoil by immediately filing a freedom of information act request for EVERY government document for the past five years, including every preserved note, e-mail, letter, and other communications regarding a broad range of subjects. Complying with the request would have almost shut down the government and resulted in millions of pages of documents. It was estimated that the cost of this request would have cost millions. Fortunately, cooler heads prevailed and he was dismissed as head of the party. But that attitude, being willing to destroy everything to get their way, is precisely what MAGA is. I never voted Democrat before, but I will never support MAGA. But you are right, this is not a four year problem, this took decades to happen and will probably take decades to heal. Trump needs to be convicted, and then hopefully die of old age shortly thereafter.

If you read Jane Mayer's book, "Dark Money" or Nancy Maclean's "Democracy in Chains" you can see that entities like the Koch Brothers and the Heritage Society began funding right wing radio and "grass roots" groups in order to undermine progress made since Roosevelt. They are against any form of environmental regulation of big business/big polluters; and they are against the wall between church and state; and they want less tax on the rich and more on working families. They've already managed to get about 50% of the public out of Medicare into the insurance programs which should NEVER have been allowed to use the term "Medicare" in their sales' pitches. They are the party of Ebenezer Scrooge.

I agree with you about the medical profession as a retired family physician. I have stated and hoped that my colleagues would stand up their patients and the profession, by doing the the necessary medical actions. Even if arrested and losing licenses. One can only jail so many and the resulted harm to population would force a change by forcing out the GOP.

Also, the fact that there are bonafide racists and Nazis (added to misogynists) that fill the ranks of MAGA does not bode well for any form of justice or equal protection before the law if you are not a white (male) Christian.
