For me, limitations of Chrome Music Lab is its genius because instead of "Let's try moving these 236 sliders" you just create music. Because of it, I wrote music in it, that I would have never written in FL. I love CML.
Yeah! Getting overwhelmed by overwhelming programs is a common deterrence to the wonderful world of music making. Keep making marvelous music, ya musing mixer, and money mills make money for ya ya maker/monkeyer of mixed music!

1:25 if u have any music knowledge then definitely use lmms (i usually use it, its unstable but pretty good for beginners)
Best free synth: vital
Pretty sure you mean Lammas and yes Lammas do make pretty good instruments; you just tickle their bellies and it turns out they have a wide range of vocal spectrums which won’t make any sense until you’ve tickled one yourself
@@DataPotato 👀 I'll try it
LMMS is so freakin limited dude, i cant stand it lol. Imo the best free DAW is reaper, they have an unlimited free trial that lets you have full functionality forever. (dont listen to the warnings in the app, they dont mean anything lol)
@@albo3music true lol, lmms only supports vst2 and crashes a lot with a somewhat clunky design, altho I do still like it as it is easy to understand and doesn't too many annoying "shortcuts" (idk) that make things worse

A helpful bit of music theory that I kinda use a lot as a wannabe musician is like. Certain notes feel like they "want" to move into another note. This depends on the scale and it's super complex, but you can feel your way through this.
If a note "feels" like it finishes the melody or just kind of like, rings out sorta, you can tease the listener by building up to that, and not playing a resolving note until a bit later.
Going too long without resolving kinda feels like, crummy, but you can toy around with it a bit. It's kind of like getting a drink of water after you keep dropping the glass and have to go to the store and buy a new glass each time. Way better than if you had just drank it at the first possible chance!
...lot more glass in your feet, though.
Thank u sheep undefined, hold up no i'm pretty sure that all sheeps are by definition defined, so maybe you don't actually exist...
@@DataPotato That is true, but perhaps I am a being where, a sheep is the closest, yet not entirely accurate word that could define me?

@@SheepUndefined That's a good point! Your name could be more clearly structured to show that, but I do love a mystery! Maybe you are an undefined type of sheep, or you used to be a sheep... Who knoooows...
@@DataPotato Or perhaps a sheep that doesn't baah? Perhaps that would be different enough to not be a fully defined sheep.
@@SheepUndefined Or maybe a sheep whose light is not yet to reach eyes that can perceive and therefore define it. Who knows…
LMMS, Jummbox, Ultrabox, etc. are all goated free DAWs that I recommend.
but WHICH ONE :((((
Currently Ultrabox is the “best” mod of beepbox, it’s essentially a combination of all other mods and has sample support.
4:43 ..Or try save the music lab song you made as a midi file and import it into beepbox (yes it has midi importer). And then edit it anything in beepbox all you want
(Btw i do beepbox since like 1 year ago)

Thank you very much! I strive to tickle the fancies of all my viewers, even the ones that don’t really want to make music, so that’s why I include the jokes.
I’m glad to hear that my expertise in gelotology resulted in the engagement of your funny bone
I had never heard of Chrome Music Lab or Beepbox before. Been needing something simpler than LMMS or Reaper to cut my teeth on to fully grasp music composition, so this was very helpful.
that song you made is such a banger goddamn
Nice tutorial! I might've heard of Beepbox before... but still some good advice!
Just so you know though, changing the "Scale" on the right allows the full range of notes to be used.
Also, under "Edit" > "Channel Settings" you can add more or less melody/drum channels if you ever need to.
Good stuff 👌👌👌
you can also select "allow adding notes not in scale" in preferences
Yeah, I learned that I wasn't at FL studio level the hard way(no money wasted thankfully, I went the yar-har route.), I just opened it up, saw some tutorials, thought "okay this seems fine, imma cover something" and almost immediately got overwhelmed by the sheer amount of things I could do and also not exactly understanding where everything was yet.
Anyway, beepbox looks cool. Might give it a shot. If that doesn't work, then back to warioware DIY it is!
i've been using beepbox since my first year of middle school (about five years ago now) and i can confidently say that you've summarized the process of creating songs 90% of the time: click around on your melody instrument until it sounds decent haha
but in all seriousness though, great video!! even though i've been making music for nearly half a decade it's only really a hobby, so videos like these really helps me get my mind in the right place for the next time i want to create a new track :>
Lol and thabks
I know that’s a short reply for such a well thought out comment, but uh…

tip: you can use q or edit --> channel settings to change the number of channels

The answer is not to spend two hundred dollars on FL Studio... And instead pirate it because corporations deserve no money ;)

TRUE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I used to use online sequencer so much
Though I've recently switched to a program called Domino cause i make piano covers of video music and needed a larger range of notes (and also bpm and note volume customization)
Great tutorial for beginners! Thanks for making this
Thanks! It sure taught me a lot!
Adding on to the beepbox thing, you can add more channels. This goes for notes or melodies. You can also go into the preferences and turn on a bunch of different settings that give you things like octave scrolling, piano keys that let you see what note you're playing in like you have in the video, and channel muting. There's also different mods of beepbox like Ultrabox, Pandorasbox, and Jummbox that have more features like the ability to add a mod channel as well as a wider variety of instrumentals.
Thank you for this tutorial!
Thank you for watching!

yes yes, me patiently waiting for episode 5
i already knew about beepbox..
BUT, i am so f[]king glad to see someone else aknowledge its existence, thank you.
As a college student studying music theory, this is actually really informative!! I don’t know about beepbox, but the main limitations in chrome music lab are the lack of instrument variety and that it traps you on your scale. If you want to make something that sounds a little less classical, experimenting outside of the scale is sometimes helpful, because it sounds much more dissonant than even the most dissonant intervals you can get inside of a major or minor scale. But chrome music lab, in my opinion, is the best way to get into music production because of how simple it is for people to pick up and then quickly learn how to make things sound good!
Well I made this video a month.5 ago so I probably won't respond to any comments that aren't questions. Wait, what is this then???
Ok, ok, while I'm here, I just wanna say thanks for saying my video was informative and for giving all those suggesitons!
Yeah I agree that experimenting outside of the scale is helpful! And while dissonant stuff can be tricky to get right, it can sound really good!
Good luck with your musical carrreeeerrrr and best of luck with your musical carrrreeeerrrr! Wait that's very redundant WAI--
and thabks for commenting ;0
What do you mean Chrome Music Lab traps you on a scale? I'm pretty sure there is an option in the settings that allows you to include all notes (with their sharps and flats) between octaves, as well as an option to change the key it's in.
You can also use the Inspect tool to hack it to give you more octaves pretty easily.
@@thatguynamedgeorge9218 I could be wrong, I never used it very much but as far as I was aware, you could only select Major/Minor scales and then use notes inside of them
@@eek4382 Well, there is a third option for Chromatic scale, in case you want the full range of notes. Chrome Music Lab's song maker is only really limited in:
1. The amount of measures you can use/length of the song _(can be expanded through Inspect tool, but is risky since you can't save it as a link and could lose all your progress if the tab is closed out)_
2. The samples _(both notes and percussion)_
3. Amount of tracks _(can only have one)_
-4. The range- _(Not actually a limitation, can be easily expanded through the Inspect tool under half a minute.)_
For a good example of how far Song Maker can be pushed, check out the video where someone recreated every Undertale track relatively well with it.

As someone who's been writing music for nine years, I'm so glad you added that tip about analysing the music of others to see what you can learn from it. Aside from practicing writing music yourself, analysing others' music is the single best thing you can do to improve. Music theory, in essence, is just the organisation and formalisation of that process through the use of labels for the many different concepts you encounter for better communication and comprehension.
Just be careful, because "music theory" is also often weaponised as a White supremacist dogwhistle to uphold centuries-old European music as the pinnacle of musical innovation that all other genres are inferior to, which is utter bullshit. It's good music, don't get me wrong, but so is all that other stuff. The idea is that the compositional practices of this old European music, as labelled and structured in music education systems, have an exclusive claim to the term "music theory" and all other genres are judged on their conformity to these conventions, which is bullshit. True music theory is as diverse as the cultures and genres it describes, and each has its own form of music theory that focuses on its strengths, priorities and traditions. And no one person can know it all. There's no point where someone "knows music theory" because there's always more out there. The best way to cultivate the theory knowledge that best supports your music making is to focus on analysing the music you like to listen to, as that's what leads you to make music you like to listen to. Don't entirely ignore all the other music, though. There's valuable shit to pick up on when you look outside the box.
I.... agree.
Thanks for taking the time to write such an insightful comment!
