@R h you mean the anti vax fuckers spitting on Nurses and abusing them to the point they have been advised not to wear their uniforms in public? Those pole smokers should be supported?
@R h Sweet Mother of God the corruption in this country is getting out of control, one story at a time mate, it's only one bloke ....well used to have two but one got arrested the other day but anyway Jordies isn't a fucken news channel, don't think he has the same resources as Fairfax, Murdoch press media ya know? The CAPSLOCK button is between the TAB key and the SHIFT key on the left of your keyboard... please stop yelling it's to early in the morning for this shit!
@R h degenerate facebook addicts. so many people calling themselves "soldiers". so much bad pussy cheering these poor blokes on from the sidelines in the comments. you are cooked when you go into "battle" with an army of assistant trades people with nothing to lose, proselytising anti-vaxxers who can't accept medical advice, Q, 4chan and trump degens with social media addictions.
I've worked at pubs and RSL's for over 10 years - the entire business revolves around the pokes - having a bistro/restaurant/bar is just an extra feature in case the gamer's fancy a feed or a tipple. Have pensioners tell me constantly the absurd amount of money they've lost - its criminal - they can't help themselves. But don't worry the venue facilitates them taking a break by forcing them to stand up for a minute of silence everyday at 4pm in remembrance. Pubs are one thing but there's a real hypocrisy in regard to RSL's whom claim to care about the community whilst not just allowing but encouraging Nanna to blow her pension. Form the actual layout of the gaming room to the role of a gaming host's; whose job is to cultivate relationships and leverage those relationships to encourage further participation - there is a real manipulation happening.
the bistro is there because 1) you legally have to serve food if you serve alcohol and b) actually enables them to stay all day without leaving for lunch or dinner. Pretty sure the bistro at the club worked in was losing money.
@@shanemorris3554 right on! The whole thing is designed around the Pokies - the nicest seats and drinks brought to you if you are in the Pokies. The bistros are usually loss-making - I worked for an accountant firm and some clients where bistros within clubs they were almost always losing money but they would be reimbursed from the clubs for members spending - its a sham and I never support it
I use to work at pokies in tas, I asked a fella who put himself on the self exclusion list to leave and he punched me in the tit. He wasn't banned for assaulting me, instead my managers helped him take his name off the self-exclusion list and welcomed him back. Toxic industry
Young men have been brainwashed into thinking it's normal to bet whenever you're watching the sports. They focus in on these young blokes who work all day doing back breaking labour and take their money without any shame. Gambling advertisements feature major celebrities, it's obscene.
But maaaaate, just put a bet on with the boys! Your not one of the boys if you don't use a betting app! The advertising strategies the betting companies use are genius too.
@Wrulol don't be so contemptuous of people just because you don't fall for this shit that they do. You have no idea what sociological factors have led them to fall for that. We should be helping those people, not looking down on them
Pretty gross how they hijacked Australian sport club culture to normalize this shit too. The amount of people I know that are seemingly on a perpetual multi just make me sad.
Why is it taking the legal system so long to find out exactly how much $ that scumbag rorted from taxpayers money that Jordon exposed. Gladys is the same, looking the other way with Icac.
Its not bribing politicians it's 'lobbying' them. Words matter, change the words and the stigma that goes with them and your changing the conversation.
@@Christoff070 Why do you think they legalised the worst vice of all, poker machine and casino gambling, and not cannabis or other drugs? Because the side effect of smoking cannabis is that you learn to think for yourself and that's far worse in their eyes than ripping off widows in their weeds and unemployed schizophrenic alcoholic pensioners down on their luck and hoping for a lucky break.
One of the first things I observed, after immigrating to Aus, is that the gambling here is out of hand. I can't go a single day without being bombarded by some sort of punting ads, banners, junk mail, etc. I wish advertising gambling was unlawful. The ads are like saying "Here try this heroin. The government says it's ok, so it must be good for you" I really despise gambling with every fibre of my being
It’s the same for alcohol. The idea that something is legalised by the gov means its good is an old joke. The people are starting to realise its ALL corrupt
I'm 27 years old and every app is full of gambling ads every day, TH-cam, Insta, Facebook etc Even snap chat too from memory Its fucked. Should be illegal
RSL also petitioned the government to stop a royal commission into soldier suicides. the RSL actively tried desperately to stop it happening. That's a bit strange isnt it, considering its the RSL?
A lot of the presidents and treasurers of RSLs are fake vets or never served , truly mind boggling someone that never served can be a president of an RSL
I purchased some Galium online , I went around every machine in Hobart and surrounding areas and poured it into the coin slots and scratched up all the exposed aluminium with pure Galium, it won't be long until every machine falls apart.
The culture of the pokies in the eastern states shocked me when I moved over from WA. Pokies in a pub in WA just aren't a thing. There's the one casino, and that's it. And sure, that casino fleeces enough people, but at least it's not conveniently located for the majority of people who live in WA. It took about an hour to get to the casino from my place in the northern suburbs of Perth. I honestly think that pokies should be made illegal. I don't care that the people who run them will lose money - what sort of a person runs them anyhow?
This is what Australia has become, and this is how they treat whistleblowers or anyone else who sticks their head above the crowd. Corruption is entrenched at all levels. Please do a followup video on the poker machine monopoly in Tasmania and the flow of money to the rich Farrell family in Sydney. A disgraceful industry. Good luck to Troy
"The heart of our communities" - where was that argument when they were strangling Melbourne's live music venues with punitive license fees in order to get rid of them to make way for pokies?
I was doing my RSA in NSW and have had friends who did their RCG tell me that despite laws saying we are responsible and must cut off patrons when they have too much to drink. You aren’t supposed to approach a patron to tell them they’ve gamebled too much. On that note a while ago I read a news article of staff powerless as patrons gambled some stories included patrons soiling themselves or wearing diapers, people put themselves through extreme situations to gamble and the laws just aren’t supportive enough
Theres like 1 casino in Perth and i remember being viciously disgusted with the pokies section of it. Other than all the lights and noise intended to overwhelm your senses, everywhere else seemed like an alright place to fuck around with your mates on a day out, but the pokies section was by far the most depressing section. Everyone in there looked like some kind of hollow shell, it was all barely lit except for the machines etc.
Agreed. From WA too, where we don’t have clubs with pokies, when I first went over east I couldn’t understand how anyone could be so foolish as to get bamboozled by such a machine. If they weren’t turning a profit would they exist?
Yeah how good is WA not having that shit, our young men here have already been conditioned to think that betting on everything is okay. Imagine if we had pokies too?!
this is what the diggers who died in the trenches for and battle the vietminh through the jungles of Da Nang for, so the next generation can be slot jockeys
I spent decades in hospitality. Nothing is sadder than seeing the pokie regulars waiting at the front doors every morning waiting for us to open and trust me do not be a second late. They sometimes get abusive at staff who are coming into work. They are no different to the people on the other side of the pub waiting at the bottle shop to open. The behaviour is identical.
I was taken to a large western Sydney club a few years back, went to the loo and was disgusted to hear the come back to the carnival music ie: come back and stick the last buck you have in a machine, being softly piped into the loo’s. Pure evil. Started going to a gym in another club and was astounded by the number of mostly women sitting at the pokies in a trance at 9am!, so much for their “no harm” policies. As with the banks, casinos and clubs, money laundering, and social harm is just doing business. Piss off the pokies, bring back the live music!.
@@wolfgangvonuce9615 the first time I heard, "Gamble responsibly" in the advert disclaimer, I was genuinely perplexed: Traditionally, we tell people to not be stupid/not do stupid things by saying, "don't gamble with your life" etc. Thus, this equates irresponsible behaviour as gambling. Hence, 'gamble responsibly' is an oxymoron, at least to me.
Live music?!? People enjoying themselves and each other's company? What are you, some kinda COMMIE? People need to have every moment monetized or they get up to destructive mischief, you know that.
our family still has one of their ancient hard-shell stubby holders (fat like a vb longneck) with the styrofoam insulation (which has long-since gone to shit) and the bottle opener on the bottom.
15 years ago I worked for an online casino designing these games and 90% of our revenue was from 5 or 6 people in china and russia and we were almost certain they were just washing their money. Didn't stop us sending them heaps of laptops and stuff to make sure they kept playing though. Slot machines in Australia are fully regulated and the math of these machines is 100% calculated in advance - we had 5 different designs - different configurations of reel stops , which would be reskinned again and again for 100+ games. The 5 designs gave the casino a range of volatility (5% very big wins and 95% losses vs 45% very small wins and 55% losses) each with a 50+ page spreadsheet with all the stats carefully predicting the exact return to player (RTP) percentage over time - most were between 88% to 93% (put in 100,000, get back 93,000). Whenever we released a new game the stats sheet and a copy of the game went to a gov department where they could have it running with fake money to measure 500 million plays to verify the math we said it was using - they would then take that code and load it onto our online server (all access to the server was monitored as well). Cold calculated money sinks. The only thing you can win from them is other patrons money. The house always gets paid. Also, we had like 4 devs yet 50 people manning a 24h technical support line to help incase people had technical issues depositing money or some shit - was kinda gross - just a flashy system to wring money out of people.
" Better the little that the righteous have than the wealth of many wicked; for the power of the wicked will be broken, but the LORD upholds the righteous" Kochie's 101 Ways to Surive 2009
When I serviced pokies in the 90s I would get asked by punters frequently which poker machine pays the best. Would point then to the machine near the entrance . Has 100% return! It was the money change machine 🤣
Paul Kent's reaction to the $25,000 fine for the Penrith Panthers was something like... 'That's nothing for them. The leagues club will make that in an afternoon from the Queen of the Nile on welfare day'. That's conservative I reckon.
I work in security, I hate pokies with a passion. The music, the lights and the whole system is set up for you to lose. I’ve seen men put their mortgages in the machine, people playing 2 at a time and the fact that I cannot stop someone playing even if they’ve maxed out all their cards to play. I saw one guy, older male with a fleet of trucks who earned (he’s shown me his accounts) an average of 16k a week and fortnight on 2 trucks around 9k. He was that hooked on the pokies he couldn’t afford to pay his workers for a week. He was using other migrant workers (Indians, Nepalese etc) who he would pay just over the bare minimum per hour. Absolutely disgusting, not just him but the fact that we have these money sinks that are taxed at 51% but I still have to pay to use the M4 and would pay $700 a week in taxes. This country is fucked.
Scares the shit out of you to think how hard it would be to untangle the economy from the amount of money pokies generates. I know certain pub chains fund the nice, (comparatively) pokie free venues off the revenue made from their other - shithole - pokie trap-houses.
@JaffTee. I work in that industry as well. And its soul destroying and also just saddening. As adult entertainment yes it can be fun. However both you and I have seen desperate people throw thousands upon thousands to get back to even, people throwing their dole and pay checks into the pokies (most don't put their jackpots up and are only $10000 so they win a small amount then come back after they have lost it). As one manager told me at the start of my security career, 4 people playing pokies makes more money than a fully packed bar for hours. Also its (usually) trouble free as you know that fights happen in packed pubs than in pokies. Though don't discount the fact that it doesn't happen. When money becomes involved, anything can happen. Here in lies your problem. Every licensee has to put pokies in as its a massive cash boost to any pub. It takes a brave licensee to say no to pokies. The biggest conglomerate is Woolworths aka ALH which has pubs in every state and territory. WA has a mandate not to have them in the pubs It also is the biggest money spinner for any state government as its taxes them heaps (I think its at 40% per pokie). So if we were to get rid of them I assure you that the AHA and all the licensees would absolutely kick up a massive stink about this. If you want to get rid of them, don't play them.
They over-saturate the industry and venues with gamble responsibly reminders as an insidious strategy. There's an optimal point where repetition is effective but beyond that point it just becomes noise and is filtered out.
my favorite part of the whole pokies industry is those ads that promote "Know your limit" like the pokies industry dont have psychologist on the payroll to make there machines as addictive as humanly possible then when jo blow walks in by them selves or with added social pressure to gamble as in its their fault they dont have a team of psychologist telling them not to gamble
In 2016, Australian’s collectively lost $18b gambling…..That’s about $1,000 per adult. (Source: The Economist). Imagine how prosperous Australia could be if that money went in to supporting local and small businesses.
Reached $24.89 billion. Lockdownsv have dragged the figures down because venues an TABs are closed. Online sportsbetting increased by 45% though and it was mostly young men opening accounts and spending more so we're setting up the next generation of gambler's
That stat is frightening. I thought it was 20. No talking, no socialising. It is a holy hole of a place with the nice carpet and flashing lights. Sucking wealth from the ordinary
Imagine if the gov owned all those pokies and casinos. $18b+ that could go into addiction support and cracking down on money laundering. Yeah, it's the gov running it but at least we'd have some recourse.
Jordan: I have a an extremely serious intense addiction to pokies and sports gambling to the point where I am suicidal. All the govt funded rehabs have been defunded for gambling and 'now' only do drugs or alcohol meanwhile the govt takes $$$ of gambling tax and advertising revenue. If I don't go to rehab I will die yet I don't matter cause I'm not Gina Rhinehart', John Barilaro or Clive Palmer. We should do a doco together if there's any hope. Somehow I don't see the parasites at Sky taking an interest in me.
You’ve taken the first step and that’s to recognise. You can get through it. You do matter. Please ask anyone around you to help because they will. No one like the pokes and we understand why they become an addiction. Don’t be embarrassed to tell someone in your life because they want you here. Don’t let the pokes win, they have already won enough. Your life is worth more than any amount of money
My brother still brags about winning $400 back in 2012. I'd be willing to bet the reason he consistently needs to borrow money from me, even when he gets paid more than me is because it all disappears into the machine, his Hilux and a Zinger Box
Wait until you're in a relationship with someone who has a chronic pokie habit. Jesus, it's like living with a genuine vampire. The endless lies, the mysterious disappearance of the cash you had sitting in your wallet, the credit card you can't find until you discover a shit-ton of money is missing from your bank account, the excuses, the manipulation, the emotional blackmail, the gaslighting, the hollow promises to change. I'm surprised I didn't suffer some sort of complete psychological collapse. Pokies are a fucking blight, and they should be wiped out.
I can proudly say I am up on the pokies lifetime. Mostly because I dropped a gold coin into the machine a handful of times and won 100-200. Going to take a long time to reverse that 😂
@Listener of Society Stop giving him money. He will keep taking it and keep feeding it into those machines if you don’t do anything to stop it. Help him
@@Perfidion I dumped someone who had a pokies problem the first time I figured out he stole money from me. He was "going to pay me back". I still remember it in 2009 when I had just bought my first place.
I recently went to get a license with a ClubsNSW associate in Liquor and Gaming to work at a TAB (don't judge, I needed something to work in since big rona closed down my usual line of work). A friend of mine, who works in the UK, said if you believe someone is money laundering through your shop, you have to report it, and you can't tell the launderers about it. With New South Wales, I was given ZERO training on suspicious activity with regard to money laundering. I asked in the training if it would be covered, and it was not discussed in the slightest.
Not sure about other states, but in Victoria there are regulations around how much money a pokie machine is allowed to lose in a given timeframe, meaning they are basically just a vending machine that lets you put in a dollar to get out 70 cents.
I've heard that too, something within the lines of their only allowed to go so long without paying out but I think this maybe rumours spread by the pokie people to get ya to play more xD
When I moved to the UK from Aus I thought all the gambling/betting shops everywhere were an eyesore - but what I've realised is it's basically the UK doing for gambling what Australia is doing for alcoholism. In the UK, you can buy alcohol anywhere - newsagents, supermarket aisles - it's all over. While Aus needs a bottle or a separate external section to the regular Woolies. In Australia, you can't go to a single pub, bar, or hotel without stubbing your foot on a whole damn aisle of pokie machines where you'll be served food & drink to keep you there 24 hours a day if need be; while in the UK you need to go into a dingy minimalist thing that looks almost like office space, with a cubicle, and a maximum number of kiosks per location; If you want food or drink, or a comfortable chair, you'll need to go outside & go somewhere else. You'll still see plenty of sad husks of human misery coming out of UK betting shops - but that's the thing - you'll see them coming in & out - you won't see lines of them sat there for hours on end only leaving in the dead of night because they shut the doors at 9pm & are open less than 12 hours a day. On the other hand - you see them everywhere. You see more of them than real estate agent offices, banks, or those money laundering fronts pretending to be vape shops.
Of course it is. Twenty bucks buys you five minutes of noise and sound for 87% of the life of the pokie. You might play a machine for two years that never pays you anything. The advertised RTP of 87% is based on the money gambled, not what you lose from your bank account so the real world return is far closer to zero. They are also stacked for higher payouts for bigger bets. But probably worst of all is that owners can and do manipulate the RTP. So there are days and times you will have practically no chance of walking away a winner.
Andrew Wilke is a legend for his work in mitigating the effects of pokies. In the mid 90s, newly elected Lib Victorian premier Jeff Kennet legalised gambling across the state, introduced Crown Cassino in Melbourne and pokies to virtually every club, RSL etc. I suppose he wanted to capture all that sweet, sweet wasted cash that kept bleeding across the Murray. In an ironic twist, years later, he became chairman of Beyond Blue, the depression/suicide prevention organisation. Perhaps this was penance for the massive amount of gambling addiction created by the pokies... His government also privatised public utilities (electricity and gas) making Victoria the most expensive state in which to live. So, what a great man!
Haha totally true, though tbf if you gamble for profit, unless you a successful professional punter, don’t gamble. Gambling should be entertainment you can afford, I know it’s not and that’s the issue. But losing money is part of it, it’s the risk that entertains an individual. Say they had a $20 limit a week or $200, maybe more and that was a small part of their income, and it entertained them for X minutes per week. then one day they win $6000, but they’d lost $10,000 that year, well the punter (ideally) wanted the entertainment all those times they spent an affordable amount on it, but they weren’t about to pull $6k from their savings today. It is a win, if you can gamble within your personal limit, which again I acknowledge many don’t. Looking at gambling as purely profit and loss, is ignoring what motivates individuals to gamble.
I have lost $600 on the pokies and won around $900 in my lifetime. Would I recommend playing the pokies? Fuck no. Not for winning atleast if you enjoy it and find it fun then yeah sure go ahead. Same reason you buy scratch tickets from time to time for fun The fact that bars have pokies is kinda stupid they may as well just open small casinos in each town so we can goto bistros etc without dealing with gambling but eh someday
I was at my local club with my then GF around 6 months ago, we both sitting in the smoking section of the club where pokies are, then all of sudden we hear this bloke yell at the top of his lungs. So I went over to see what the commotion was about, he won the $16,000 jackpot I said to him so you had a good win, his response was that's not even close to what I have lost on them.
What really concerns me is, as a gamer, the way that games have incorporated many pokie mechanics into their lootbox or reward prizes.. I've played pokies and it genuinely gives you the same 'thrill' as when you're trying to get the free spins mechanic, the waiting & the sounds and lights are absolutely mimic-ing pokies machines. What's more you can't just outright purchase the prize items, you can only purchase a mystery box which might give you the item you want. There's NO regulation of this and is in games kids and adults alike play (apex legends etc). I never thought I'd be someone concerned about this but it's SERIOUSLY going to cause problems. This type of revenue alone is currently worth more than the ENTIRE music and film industry combined (that's JUST these in-game 'microtransactions' as well)
I worked at the bar with the most profitable gaming room (sub-100 machines) in Syd and i’ve never wanted to comment on a video until now. I’ll never forget my boss warning me that according to RCG license (mandatory for working around machines), it’s a finable/dismissible offence to suggest to a patron that they may be addicted or need help. You can be fired for approaching a person who is screaming, crying and desperately trying to chase their losses and suggesting to stop and/or get help. You are only allowed to promote anti-addiction remedies if they approach you. In terms of thickening skin and a perspective on life, nothing quite beats 3AM shifts on a Tuesday, watching mothers/fathers of children gambling away essential income and knowing you can’t do shit except smile and offer them another beer to lubricate their financial journey.
I was told years ago by a manager how the industry works. All the machines are connected to a central computer which sets the percentage that is paid out. The law says they must pay out a certain percentage but nothing says they can not pay out more. On weekends, public holidays, pension days, when a new venue opens, they pay out extra because they want everyone to win. Then after you win on Saturday night you go back Monday, desperate to recreate the experience , and they have dropped the payout percentage. That is where they make their real money from the people they have hooked in.
In the heart of Sydney city there’s pubs that give you free burgers and decent food if you’re playing the pokies! Because it’s all rich guys from big company’s slapping max bet on every machine ! Legit
I work in the arts sector. We had anti-money laundering legislation introduced in the entire EU about 3 years ago. Almost every gallery I know of complied to this. I started a new job last month. When I pointed out that this legislation came out, they went "whats that?". They had absolutely no idea about it, but seemed to be somewhat uninterested in complying. I pointed it out yet again earlier this week that they were in breach and asked to have a proper chat with the owner about it. I was fired the same day. I am not too fussed, the job wasn't for me. But I do find it crazy that these AML laws came into effect all over the world vaguely around the same time. Some people do it, and some don't. But until they are ready to enforce the very rules they put in place it just seems mute. It takes time and effort to comply to them, so people who are working within the rules tend to have higher overheads than those that don't. I think it would be easy for a pokies farm to just go "fuck that" when it comes to AML. Personally I think if I had a money printing machine, I would work in compliance to protect my gambling profits, but after the week I have just had.... maybe thats just me. 😉
You know, it really amasses me how the justice system takes forever to convict obvious criminals, and it's quick to waste the time and squeeze every penny out of the obvious innocents.
There is a reform group of Australian veterans rising up against this exact issue in Victorian culture, and the RSLs have a very big explanation to be made (and we’re still waiting) for the coffers going from patriotic funds of sub branches being used for Tabcorp leasing. Go figure. How many porterhouses and pots haven’t been consumed due to cov-19…
Wasn't there a movie, possibly one of the greatest Australian films of all time, made about pokies interfering in clubs? I believe it was called 'Crackerjack'.
Yeah,,,, (POKIES, POTS and PARMA'S), that's all the RSL's give a shit about, they pretend to care about vets but we all know where their loyalties lay, POKIES, Clubs should be Clubs, Do you remember, music, dances, family celebrations, community fund raisers, happy times when you could go home without the arse out of your pants but if you did, all it meant was that you must have had a great night. What about the sheriff kicking your door in to collect unpaid bills because the POKIES ate all your money and didn't even pay for dinner before f@#king you. POKIES need to be shut down completely, not just some, ALL. The gaming commission and all it's political associates should be charged with OBTAINING PROFIT BY DECEPTION and pay the full price for their part in the destruction of untold lives and suicides as well as the huge impact on the community to the negative. The whole system is run by criminals for the benefit of criminals both civil and political. I would strongly recommend supporting groups like Soldier On who really do spt the veterans, maybe these groups could join forces and take away from the RSL their hold over the rights of running Anzac Day and Remembrance Day, servicemen and women didn't sacrifice to see fat cats and politicians get there greedy F@#ken hands over the peoples hard earnt dollar.
@@TheAjRae Yeah look, there was some sort of subplot about pokies and a take over from a big wig club. Anyway, the point is, it's a cracking film. It's got Mick Molloy and that bloke that rode a uni-cycle. What else do you want from me?!
This is really good to hear, would love to see it going nation wide, we protect the vulnerable elderly against covid yet we ruin those very lives with pokies because it's run by the ruling elite
I remember when I was 18 or 19 and I stuck a dollar in a pokie when I was at the local club with some mates to play pool and won like $25, told my dad (who worked in clubs all his life) and he said "that's great, now never play them again" and gave my a 10mins lecture on the evil of pokies. I went on to spend several years working in a small suburban RSL with maybe 100 machines, and it was fairly soul-crushing to watch people sit there and slap away for hours on end ... I'd often go to do a cancel credit for someone served at the bar for years and give it a bit of "g'day mate, how're ya going'?" and they'd start to tell you how their luck was or wasn't holding on the machines and i'd clarify "I meant you, not that" *points at machine* ... I found myself choosing my words more carefully after that happened a few times
I’m dad is a retired pokie technician with close 35-40yrs experience. The are designed to benefit the club. I think he said, the machines are set at 87-90% win rate/circle, that could be you win 1 credit - 8000 credits (most the time they’re small wins) When walking into a pokie room whatever money you have in your pocket be prepared to lose it.. If you double your money on a pokies collect it n walk out.
Whenever I visit NSW it astounds me how deregulated Pokies are. When my best mate from Newcastle visits me here in Perth his first words are: "your pokies are so boring"
If you do the Nullarbor right on the SA side of WA/SA border there's a pub with pokies. And if you're travelling east from then on every stop that isn't just a tiny servo has pokies. In the middle of fucking nowhere. (If you travelling west of the border be prepared for fruit fly cops to go through all you own like a dose of the salts)! Coming from Perth other states proliferation of pokies is quite a shock. They're absolutely everywhere.
@@user-sc2bl5fc7b It's significantly different both qualitatively and quantitatively. The dopamine feedback cycle is delayed further, there's a perception of 'skill' in understanding, and there's far greater time restrictions. This is borne out by how much pokies outstrip TABs >5x in NSW etc. Yes, private ownership and recompense of the proceeds of gambling shouldn't occur and leads to significant problems downstream. But to use track based gambling as an argument against control/banning of pokies is pure whataboutism.
So glad you're covering the gambling epidemic in this country. It is appalling how many ads for betting companies were on youtube during this pandemic.
Having family in Singapore I go every year precovid, when they have the weekly lotto which is usually around 2-5 mil there is always a line stretching a block on the day of the draw. Seeing our loses worse is terrifying
How has he gotten the gambling nan story so accurately? Even _my_ grandmother goes to the pokies whenever she visits us, and she doesn't even live in Australia!
During my HSC year I worked in an RSL for for 3 months. They let me go for questionable reasons (benefit of the doubt, maybe they really believed I did the thing I definitely didn't do) but after the initial shock wore off I realised I didn't want to work there anyway. The place was propped up by pokies. Even if this RSL was in the 5% not running illegal practices it was still propped up by pokies. We would open the door at 9am to let the most vulnerable people in our community come in and start throwing their money away before we could even legally pour them a beer. Pokies being the reason clubs are profitable isn't a secret, it's not even an open secret, its something you can be taught by an RCG officer if you do RCG training in person.
I know right just got my rcg a month or so ago and just the course summarised is “yeah it’s really bad for the customers but you can’t tell them to stop either in fact get them to do it more” it makes me feel bad working there now that I know just how bad the pokkies are
I’ve heard there is a nursing home with a dementia-specific ward where they have several decommissioned pokie machines along one wall for residents with Alzheimer’s who were former pokie-regulars to ‘play’ on.
I have played the pokies only once. I don't know why I did, but I put in $5, and after a few turns I won $20. I immediately cashed out, and shouted my mates a round of drinks. I knew I was ahead and playing any further would result in a loss. That was over 20 years ago, and I have not played since. I still remember the machine. Queen of the Nile. Thank you Dubbo Bowlo
I played a poker machine once and lost $10, many years later I played on a roulette machine and I won $40 so i am up $30, I already beat the system so I am happy to just walk away forever now. It boggles my mind how people don't understand basic statistics. Why don't they invest that money in crypto instead..
My nan sank 800k plus on the pokies at our local RSL. She was treated like a celebrity whenever she walked in. Cheap drinks and discounted food, free coffees when she first walked in. We tried to get her help but the rest of the family didn't believe us until it was too late. She lost her house. All her savings. She could have been in a nice retirement place but all the money lost on the pokies she ended up in the cheapest place that could provide the care she needed. The club got a 2 million reno though so i hope everyone enjoys the new bistro that my nan paid half of
"You gotta hit the spins ruffely three and a half seconds between spins, make sure to do $5 bets because then the machine will think fuck your putting a bit of money in and its going to pay you back and you give the machine a tap on the side after every 5 spins a guarantee you after 7 spins you will get a feature." - Mike Nolon
The biggest con is this idea of 'responsible gambling' and 'problem gambling.' Gambling is not just an individual's responsibility, it's a societal and political issue that we are also to blame for. We have normalised gambling and made it so much more accessible, and our governments can do so much more to regulate the industry but it continues to allow the farce of 'responsible gambling' to continue and shift the blame and responsibility onto the individual due to the sheer amount of donations our political parties receive from the industry and taxes.
No such thing as 'responsible cannabis use' though, is there? Much like their plain packaging and over pricing efforts to reduce smoking rates, it's not anything like an actual fix and exists solely to justify their argument that they're not complicit in the biggest scam to hit the Australian people (prior to the election of the Morrison LNP that is).
Fun fact (It's actually terrifying) Something like 25% of the World's (legal) pokie machines are in Australia Edit: I looked it up to double check and it's only like 19-20% now but still a stupidly high percentage of the world's pokie machines
"We were keeping our eye on 1984. When the year came and the prophecy didn't, thoughtful Americans sang softly in praise of themselves. The roots of liberal democracy had held. Wherever else the terror had happened, we, at least, had not been visited by Orwellian nightmares. "But we had forgotten that alongside Orwell's dark vision, there was another - slightly older, slightly less well known, equally chilling: Aldous Huxley's Brave New World. Contrary to common belief even among the educated, Huxley and Orwell did not prophesy the same thing. Orwell warns that we will be overcome by an externally imposed oppression. But in Huxley's vision, no Big Brother is required to deprive people of their autonomy, maturity and history. As he saw it, people will come to love their oppression, to adore the technologies that undo their capacities to think. "What Orwell feared were those who would ban books. What Huxley feared was that there would be no reason to ban a book, for there would be no one who wanted to read one. Orwell feared those who would deprive us of information. Huxley feared those who would give us so much that we would be reduced to passivity and egoism. Orwell feared that the truth would be concealed from us. Huxley feared the truth would be drowned in a sea of irrelevance. Orwell feared we would become a captive culture. Huxley feared we would become a trivial culture, preoccupied with some equivalent of the feelies, the orgy porgy, and the centrifugal bumblepuppy. As Huxley remarked in Brave New World Revisited, the civil libertarians and rationalists who are ever on the alert to oppose tyranny "failed to take into account man's almost infinite appetite for distractions." In 1984, Orwell added, people are controlled by inflicting pain. In Brave New World, they are controlled by inflicting pleasure. In short, Orwell feared that what we fear will ruin us. Huxley feared that what we desire will ruin us." From "Amusing Ourselves to Death: Public Discourse in the Age of Show Business" by Neil Postman.
If gambling is at the heart of our communities, then our communities are clearly sick and need to purge that toxins from its system. Can't believe anyone would ever argue the gambling institutions don't have big enough margins to impose new processes like a cashless card.
How did Jordan make it through a full video on pokies and gambling and not a simpsons reference. "the only monster here is the gambling monster that has enslaved you mother. I call him Gamblor and it's time to snatch her from his neon claws."
Speaking to the level of resources these "Community" clubs have. I remember when the indoor smoking bans were enacted in NSW. The incredible seeming overnight adjustment to premises and their pokie terraces to technically bring them outside was amazing. it seems IMO they can and will do anything to keep the "punters" on the stool. Gambling and Money laundering like Politicians and Lobbyists there cannot be one without the other, no ? How I wish the lobbyists actually had to conduct their business like in the old days, actually be there at the vote lurking around the lobby they needed to influence.
Pokies decimated the live music scene in Victoria. They like to tell us that 90% of money spent is returned to the user, but what does a typical pokie addict do with this 90%? Put it back in the machine, of course. Then they get 90% of that back, which is now 81% of what they started with, which also goes back into the machine. This pattern goes on until ALL their money is gone, or they have the sense to stop. Pokies are a mug's game.
I was honestly so disgusted with myself when I worked at bars how much they actually prey on peoples mental addiction to gambling. Our alcohol sales for the year didn't make close to what pokies profits were in 4 months. Its such a predatory industry that actually exploits primarily ATSI people.
This is exactly why there's pokies in every pub. 30 years ago, pubs used to make a chunk of money every week with live entertainment, which is how bands like Cold Chisel or Silverchair got their start. Entertainers you've never even heard of were able to make a living playing the pub circuit. We were warned back then that the introduction of pokies to pubs would ruin local entertainment and you know what happened? Pubs turned their stages and dance floors into pokie rooms.
I enjoy losing (mostly) my $20 each week betting on football and have done ever since sports gambling was regulated, however poker machines are pure evil and should be illegal for the many lives and families they ruin each year. When factoring in alleged money laundering by the Clubs mafia it becomes a no-brainer IMO and if pubs/clubs can't survive without pokies then so be it as society will be far better off in the long run. Racing and sports gambling cause less harm (except for animal cruelty) but if that ever changes or similar alleged criminal links arise then get rid of them too, although with governments addicted to the tax revenue much like that from tobacco and alcohol they'll keep fighting fight hard to protect the golden geese. Like most whisteblowers Troy is a true hero but the piss-weak protections for these brave socially-minded people is a national disgrace. Along with a federal ICAC this needs to change ASAP although I'm not holding my breath. Great work Jordies!
You reckon Bruz has someone watch your paytreon to get a heads up for what's coming, but comically is inadvertently assisting in your legal defense against him?
I worked at as a gaming attendant and it was incredibly sad watching the same people losing huge amounts of money. I once congratulated a member for winning 3k. His reply was I put 5k in. I ended up leaving because I felt I was being paid blood money. Pokies are fucking evil and so are the people that profit from them.
I used to be homeless not very long ago and I knew other homeless people that as soon as they got their Centrelink money they would put every cent through the pokies and then spend the other 13 days until the next payment begging. I just couldn't understand it they would be so depressed and self loathing for a couple of days after losing it and swear they would never play again only to go and do the same every time they got paid. It a sickness and it's horrible. I personally didn't spend a cent on pokies because I would rather spend mine on heroin. It least I got a couple of days of bliss before I too had to beg as well. I guess what I'm saying is they are both horrible addictions that people can't control unit they get help. I'm not doing drugs anymore or living on the street either.
I'm the supervisor in a gaming room. I don't gamble, and after a 9 hour shift the last fucking thing I'd want to do on my days off is punt on TAB or have a slap. I still hear the Go West machine in my sleep "ALL ABOOOOOOOOOOOOARD!"
I have never once spent a cent on gambling. I've followed friends into the casino and watched them lose a thousand bucks over the course of a couple of hours, wandering aimlessly from table to table, before dropping their last few bucks into a machine they swear is about to pay off. It's a depressing as fuck sight.
I've been to a casino 3 times in my life. The third time, I didn't even bet, just watched a mate feed a few too many pineapples into the machine, while I constantly told him he is wasting his money. I despise the gambling culture. I would honestly be happy to make a rare bet for fun, but due to the toxicity around it, I refuse to participate in anything. Work recently had a little piss-up at the races. I declined and said I'd cover work even though I don't mind hanging out with most of them.
Come to Merimbula NSW. The two dominating venues in our little seaside town are the RSL and the Sapphire Club, both packed with pokies machines. There is one pub. That too has pokies in it. There is no escape.
I always have thought that it's so grotesque that parasites like casinos and clubs can perpetuate gambling addiction and say it's simply an individual's problem. I had no idea that we are the worst in the world AND that the industry is doing even shadier shit than simply taking grannie's pension! Sic 'em jordies.
Clubs shouldn’t have gambling but what do you want casinos to do to stop gambling addictions? People who aren’t addicted would like to gamble once every few months or years how do you solve the issue and not just ban it? Curious cause I don’t see how they can reform the industry which is sad
@@RyuLightorb Well you would still be able to gamble while gambling was under regulation, it wouldn't be easily accessible on every corner in the country making us the most widely gambling addled country in the world, that is all. A piece of regulation is in fact suggested in the video here, the gambling card to regulate money laundering in gambling. Notice this is a clever reversal of their earlier, racist idea of criminalising and regulating aboriginal people from using cash to buy their alcohol with, the cashless welfare card. While one is punitive towards people who are not criminals, but ere merely deemed by some beurocrat as bad on society because they do have an individual problem the beurocrat has never bothered to be near or try to understand, then punitively act conditional and unkindly towards with their only source of living, this regulation actually targets real criminals, attempting to commit real crimes, that go beyond a mere individual problem in hurting Australia and its institutions of government, democracy and wellbeing. Don't be fooled, white collar crimes are more than individual failings, and they hurt many non-involved individuals within that world.
@@RyuLightorb Highly suggest you keep a look out for the findings of the Melbourne and Perth Royal Commissions into Crown. It will mostly likely have a whole bunch of recommendations for reform of the casino industry. There are lots of things that can be done that are around the features of the machines- reducing the maximum bets, having an actual pre-committment of how much you want to spend, getting rid of the lights and shit that are deliberately deceptive and addictive, having maximum play times. That's just the beginning really.
@@kazbaby212 getting rid of lights is good and reducing maximum bets but maximum play times etc sound awful. I can spend 2 hours on a pokie with the same $20 which is why once a year i play them for a solid 2 hours of fun. But the others are great they need to deal with it without punishing people who aren't problem gamblers imo. Lights and maximum bets is a good start
@@RyuLightorb There's a lot of research as to why it's useful in reducing gambling harm, and even then it's obviously not foolproof. What a system like that would do is set a maximum play time and then have a minimum amount of time that you can't play again for, like 30 mins or an hour. It helps create a break basically. It's the same for pre-committment. If a maximum play time was set for 2 hours per play then you shouldnt have a problem with it anyway? There's also a lot of research that shows that a lot of harm occurs at a low-mid range level of addiction, and not necessarily always with people who are being harmed on a wider scale and these kinds of measures addresses those levels.
when i was at uni i used to work at a few different taverns on the gold coast. literally would watch as people would put their entire weeks salary into the pokies over the course of a few hours and they'd have to walk home crying. broke my heart, but you get your head ripped off if you offer them a few free drinks and ask if they want to take a break. only they can help themselves.

I was in a casino once and was watching an old lady pump coins into a machine. Then the machine went crazy and a heap of coins spewed out. She'd won! But.. her blank stare expression didn't change at all and she immediately started pumping the winning coins straight back in. I thought "I have to get the fuck out of here"
I know what you're saying here. I have tried to raise with the ACT government of what practices I have seen over the past 5 years in my local clubs, and each Minister email goes unanswered. They don't want to know about punishing the hand that feeds. Food for thought

Wait till you find out how they work...., I programmed one many years ago and information on how they programmatically operate was very sparse but they are fundamentally very simple. While depending on your interpretation they hold up to gambling law and regulations and are 'random', because legally they cannot be fixed, in regards to how they actually operate, it is very very dodgy. What they in fact do is create a small table of images for each reel with a specific numbers of each symbol on a per reel basis and run simulations to calculate payout probabilities and adjust accordingly, this is how they can get you with 2 feature symbols showing regularly (there is more than one on each of those reels) but the third you need is statistically absurd to get, let alone with the other two. I don't know how that can be legally considered random and not fixed to be honest, but that's how it is in most cases, especially the more popular ones still in use here in Australia. I guess they could say it's random within the confines of the small box of chance they concocted? lol.
Based on what you've described, it sounds like because there is still a chance that a person can get three symbols, that means it is not fixed. Even if the chance is so small that it might never be possible in one lifetime, it is still technically possible and therefore 'random'. I have heard (but never actually read) about how there is supposed to be some kind of 'minimum payout law' about how much money a machine is allowed to take in? As long as it gives out a certain amount of money over a certain period of time it doesn't seem to matter how much money they make. This works in their favour anyway because people generally prefer to win occasionally.
@@onceonly1111 Not exactly, random definition to my understanding requires 'equal chance', pokies do not present an equal chance of all outcomes by any stretch of the imagination which is easy to prove. But it might still legally qualify for the way it is legally worded, which could have changed in NSW.
The GM of an RSL I know something of, has a salary of over 500k per year. Decided by the board. They used to have a strong indor sports club, but snooker tables take up a fair bit of floorspace and can't support criminal sized salaries... His Son now being groomed to take over
You have to admit, it's a good business model. Client puts money in expecting a return, you show them a short cartoon that satisfies them as to why they won't get a return and they wilfully try again ad nauseum.
In 2012 my aunty committed suicide after racking up $250,000 in pokies debt. This was at the same time the pokies companies fought tooth and nail to stop a $2 maximum bet law, and won. Now I know why. If there'd been a $2 max bet my aunty, a gambling addict, wouldn't have been able to blow 250 grand and bankrupt herself. Money laundering is obviously more important to Australia than it's own citizens.
They also allowed people to withdraw their super during the "first wave".... a lot of people saw free pokie money and tapped it all the way in to the pubs pockets
No one really talks about this anymore. Let people withdraw super money when they can't work, but they're sitting at home bored out of their mind. When we consider it from the perspective of this video, it seems like a great way to prop up the online pokies industry.
As a bar manager in a previous life in the UK ; I could not believe the amount of pokies in clubs over here in OZ when I got here. I worked in clubs over here in the early 2000s and was amazed at the stories of how much money punters in Australia spend on gambling. They call pokies One Armed Bandits in the UK for a reason.
i still have no idea why you were originally recommended to me, i'm sadly american, but i strangely enjoy learning things about australian government and how bad it is. i wish there were more informed americans making your style of content, but realistically... we get alex jones.
I imagine there would be good content out there for your country you probably just need to really filter through a lot of sensationalism first, before you find someone making reasoned points. One issue I've found with American politics is criticism usually gets drowned out by "patriots" who feel any genuine criticism of their point of view is purely an attack of America itself - which is often not the case.
I worked at a pub/affluent restaurant in a snooty “country” area. Mainly oldies. The restaurant was good, wasn’t a bad place for families and seniors. However, they had a sports bar and bistro/pokies den. The funny thing? I was never allowed in the den because I was under 18, but the sports bar was totally fine. I brought meals like twice to the den in 6months of working there. It was near pitch black, and I could always hear it from the kitchen. The sports bar was worse. The regulars were obnoxious, spent every last drop and were total creeps. They taught us young ones how to work there and smile pretty. Even if we didn’t have a RSA to serve alcohol, we still would be taught every other thing. What’s worse is seeing guys buying parmas and grog to ease their massive losses and then stiffing the bill after realising their money wasn’t going to magically appear back after the horses went. Pokies are worse. I hated going to shit restaurants and RSLs as a kid growing up because there was always a narrow corridor between the two “sections” of the establishment. The pokies and the actually fucking dining area. As a kid, you’re enchanted with the bright lights and noises, so you want to walk over and see, and I remember once just wandering in. No one cared. Got bored after seeing all the old people just staring at flashing screens and went back to the restaurant. It’s sorta insane to think about in the context of the rest of the world. I know Americans, with all their fuckery, don’t have such fond memories such as mine.

The behaviour is identical.
addiction is a disease, and people do weird things they wouldnt otherwise do. really sad
Addiction is addiction... The sad thing about alcohol, gambling and cigarettes is that the government literally feeds off these peoples illness.
Live music and community feel where what pubs and RSLs were originally good for
As long as they say "gamble responsibly"they've done their part to warn patrons, because they care so much about them!🙄
@@wolfgangvonuce9615 the first time I heard, "Gamble responsibly" in the advert disclaimer, I was genuinely perplexed: Traditionally, we tell people to not be stupid/not do stupid things by saying, "don't gamble with your life" etc. Thus, this equates irresponsible behaviour as gambling. Hence, 'gamble responsibly' is an oxymoron, at least to me.
If government were in any way interested in the culture of their people, they would.
Live music?!? People enjoying themselves and each other's company? What are you, some kinda COMMIE? People need to have every moment monetized or they get up to destructive mischief, you know that.
It's illegal for Winfield to advertise in Aus. So why is it ok for Great Northern and Sportsbet.
our family still has one of their ancient hard-shell stubby holders (fat like a vb longneck) with the styrofoam insulation (which has long-since gone to shit) and the bottle opener on the bottom.
I can see the news story now: "Friendlyjordies was found dead this morning, suspected suicide, shot twice in the back of head."

Also I could have sworn that was the new Kerser album, not Kochie.
I recall 2GB heavily campaigning against gambling restriction policy
And then the aussie government banned online casinos (97% payback) and poker that has a better chance of winning.
@@SmartDumbNerdyCool harder to track and tax
I hate them too. They give me the same feeling as looking at a scammer.
WA has a mandate not to have them in the pubs
It also is the biggest money spinner for any state government as its taxes them heaps (I think its at 40% per pokie). So if we were to get rid of them I assure you that the AHA and all the licensees would absolutely kick up a massive stink about this.
If you want to get rid of them, don't play them.
I see those "gamble responsibly" ads had a lot of impact
They over-saturate the industry and venues with gamble responsibly reminders as an insidious strategy. There's an optimal point where repetition is effective but beyond that point it just becomes noise and is filtered out.
It's a way for them to virtue signal, so they can pretend to be doing good without actually doing good.
I've seen more ads actually promoting gambling than the gamble responsible one
I play gambling in Pokemon cards but it's just one more booster pack that being said my favorite gambling is called Gacha
The correct message is don't gamble, so gamble responsibility is just promoting gambling to the subconscious mind.
my favorite part of the whole pokies industry is those ads that promote "Know your limit" like the pokies industry dont have psychologist on the payroll to make there machines as addictive as humanly possible then when jo blow walks in by them selves or with added social pressure to gamble as in its their fault they dont have a team of psychologist telling them not to gamble
Sorry to hear that brother.

Can you pay andrews a visit before you go please?
You’ve taken the first step and that’s to recognise. You can get through it. You do matter. Please ask anyone around you to help because they will. No one like the pokes and we understand why they become an addiction. Don’t be embarrassed to tell someone in your life because they want you here. Don’t let the pokes win, they have already won enough. Your life is worth more than any amount of money
Tell your family and mates. They want to help you. All the very best to you
My brother still brags about winning $400 back in 2012.
@@Perfidion *shit-tonne
I can proudly say I am up on the pokies lifetime. Mostly because I dropped a gold coin into the machine a handful of times and won 100-200. Going to take a long time to reverse that 😂

Wow
So glad pokies are banned outside of the casino in WA
Aus needs more of this!!!
It's also why WA has a pretty solid music scene. Elsewhere over time all the stages for bands were replaced with pokies.
I didn’t know that. I wish it was the same in all states.
Not sure about other states, but in Victoria there are regulations around how much money a pokie machine is allowed to lose in a given timeframe, meaning they are basically just a vending machine that lets you put in a dollar to get out 70 cents.
I thought it was the other way around? Put in a dollar and it will eventually return you 30 cents...
I've heard that too, something within the lines of their only allowed to go so long without paying out but I think this maybe rumours spread by the pokie people to get ya to play more xD
Comparing the gambling culture to a religion in Australia is straight up fax. Another banger of a video
Just watch any pokies room for a week, the most depressing thin ive ever seen in my life
Both criminal operations feeding on the gullible.
I do cash processing. The income from pokies is probably, 5x what the make from TAB, trade (food) and bar (alcohol) combined.
Gamblers: "I won $6000 on the pokies"
Me: That's cool and all but how much did you lose?
Gambler: changes subject
Every single time
Haha totally true, though tbf if you gamble for profit, unless you a successful professional punter, don’t gamble.
Also don’t get that twisted as me being ok with NSWs current level of, access to, or promotion of gambling.
I have lost $600 on the pokies and won around $900 in my lifetime.
Would I recommend playing the pokies? Fuck no.
Not for winning atleast if you enjoy it and find it fun then yeah sure go ahead. Same reason you buy scratch tickets from time to time for fun
The fact that bars have pokies is kinda stupid they may as well just open small casinos in each town so we can goto bistros etc without dealing with gambling but eh someday
This type of revenue alone is currently worth more than the ENTIRE music and film industry combined (that's JUST these in-game 'microtransactions' as well)
Lots of countries have banned lootboxes.
Sick
When you say Australia, leave out WA as we only have one casino and no pokies anywhere else
I don’t remember crackerjack being about that, slow down of membership… and something about Judith Lucy and a brown paper envelope

Not just the power of the pokies lobby, but ALSO the power of the racing industry being

If you double your money on a pokies collect it n walk out.

Much like their plain packaging and over pricing efforts to reduce smoking rates, it's not anything like an actual fix and exists solely to justify their argument that they're not complicit in the biggest scam to hit the Australian people (prior to the election of the Morrison LNP that is).
the fact that someone would unironically put the words "responsible" and "gambling" next to each other is hilariously depressing

Huxley feared that what we desire will ruin us."

Great work Jordies!! I'm not sure how it happened, but we never legalized pokies here in W.A. Something I'm thankful for.
Working in a pokies venues made you 3 times more likely to be affected by gambling harm because of the easy access. Lucky you got it of there.
@@sokar_rostau saw that on garage days actually and it is so true.
@@seankearney5170 oh and the violence was off tap. We even had drug dealers coming in laundering their money.
Just like the Whitlams said,
Blow up the pokies and drag them away

I declined and said I'd cover work even though I don't mind hanging out with most of them.
nothing wrong with gambling for entertainment, if you walk in considering the money already lost

I did the smart thing, withdrew $10k and bought a new motorcycle lol better than the fkn pokies
