My True Self (Self Portraits)

- In our globalized culture, we are over saturated by images of women that continually define and redefine beauty. This standard causes many women to feel pressured to fit into this archetype. In my drawing series, My True Self, I repeatedly render my self-portrait in various states of make up. My photorealistic process and the time it takes to attain “perfection” parallels to the process of a woman striving to perfect her face. At the center of this installation is a portrait of my face, unadorned. The larger scale of this portrait provides a hierarchy to what I believe to be a more honest depiction of my true self.

My favorite drawing that you drew was the one that had no makeup on. It really showed what true beauty is. My definition of true beauty is when there is nothing to cover up who you really are. You are beautiful with makeup, but without it, you look your best. The reason why is because you have nothing to hide from any of us and it shows that you don't need makeup to be amazing. You are an amazing artist but the true masterpiece is you.

I never knew such a talent was possible. I knew art was possible and I knew this was possible. But not the way she does it. Its like she takes a photograph and puts it on the paper. This is real talent. I have always thought myself to be a wonderful artist but now, I am speechless. Compared to her, I am only a noob. She makes the art come to life. Its amazing.

Don't draw with crayons and colored pencils. You must be pretty experienced to draw with colored pencils. There's actually a specific type of pencils that is for drawings like these.

Personally I enjoyed how you looked without your makeup. To me the make up seem plastered and hid your beauty from the world, while without the makeup you looked strong, confident, and more relaxed .

Heather there is no doubt that you are vastly talented. I love the gradual reduction of make up and the corresponding increase in beauty revealed. My only complaint is that the pictures show the same expression of vogue. I would like to see an express of joy that family brings out in you or maybe a sweetheart or a grandparent!
Maybe she wanted something that connected the pieces together, in this case the type of pose she did? Just a thought
My guess is that she didn't want the people to focus on her smile since smiling makes people more beautiful. But rather she wanted to focus on the main point that no woman needs make-up to be beautiful or perfect, everyone is perfect the way they are. I think it's the same thing as with models in a runway, they never smile :)

I agree...It's just that I feel that real beauty has so much to do with emotional expression and there wasn't any of that in her drawings.

Wow. The meaning and the message behind this is so deep, so aware. If the world thought like the message that is portrayed in this video, there would be a lot more confidence, and a lot less make up sales XD. I adore the fact that you feel this way and I do too. I'm young and everyone in my classes wear make up, but like with you, I feel they look that much better when they have nothing on. When you throw your true self out there, you accept who you are and that is a large step to living a long and happy life. I know,everyone in my classes wears makeup, too, and I feel like if there wasn't makeup, it would make everyone feel better about themselves. People wear makeup because they want to make themselves look better, but i think they would look better without it. Anyways, I've been wanting some Prisma pencils, and I was wondering if you would recommend them. Thanks! 😊

A true example of an artist who uses a wide variety of colours to create masterpieces like this. Don't ever be afraid to just use just black and white colours. If you want to be a true artist, you have to step out your comfort zone!
I always think it's the most difficult to draw a self portrait because people usually can't see themselves as they are. But you can draw yourself as you are and it's fantastic and I'm always so confused when you've drawn something or somebody :)

It is a technique called photorealism. The type of artist heather is extremely profound and vivid. She does this by rendering. I use rendering on many things. Like when drawing realism like she is. Heather, u have so much talent and such vividness in ur pictures, u are one of the most profound artists on TH-cam. Can't wait to see more incredible drawings from u. Keep up ur amazing ability.

She posted a picture of her supplies on ig a while back it was prismacolor pencils, Strathmore smooth Bristol paper, and occasionally a white gel pen:)

I like the drawings more than the photographs. Even though they are almost completely photo realistic, you can just tell by the texture in the drawing that it was made by hand. That human touch makes it, ironically, feel a lot more like a realistic depiction of who you are than the regular photograph does. I think that's because you were the one that gave it life.

she shouldn't be. this is not unique. it is amazing and looks cool, but the realistic style is not unique and easy to recreate. other artists like picasso
and those are unique and have "soul" in their paintings. they are innvoative and give you a feeling through their paintings. she is just recreating images. it looks cool but isnt as amazing as the mona lisa for example. not nearly as amazing

it comes from knowing and understanding color values. ;) you'd be surprised at how dark values can get for skin tones, including pale ones.

I loved this. The beauty standard are changing all the time and all though its great that everybody has been seen as beautiful with the many different standards, as soon as a new one comes everybody with the previous will be thrown under rocks. i have seen so many standards in the short time that i've lived(14 yrs), i grew up thinking being skinny was pretty. then i was told being overweight wasn't ugly and i accepted that as another standard. then just last year all about that bass and anaconda came out and made everything focused on being big. My whole life i thought i was kinda chubby. I accepted that, and came to love my body. Then i accidently lost a couple of kilos and i was weirded out by being so skinny which i still am tbh. now all i fucking hear is how they don't a skinny girl they just wan't somebody with meat on their bones, and that okay but why now that chubby and overweight people are finally seen as beautiful(really it was about time) all the fucking hate goes to skinny people? I really hate that about these standards. If you think girls that aren't skinny but have a little more meat are prettier i understand, i really do but don't call skinny people ugly skeletons because of that.
Don't take any this like i think skinny girls are prettier thank non-skinny girls (i forgot what the opposite word of skinny is) or someting like that. At least that is not what i meant so if i offended someone, sorry sorry and sorry but I'm just really pissed at people for changing the beauty standards and messing with my (still in development-)brain.
