Hey kiddo.. it the old man.. always start in the center stretch it to the outer edges. Don't worry about perfection because you always knows your own work.. you did excellent job .. I've rebuild cars for 50 years.. retired
Now I understand why I can't find anyone around here to hire and replace my headliner. It takes tremendous patience and professional skill that John definitely has demonstrated. . My sagging headliner held up with tape will remain so for awhile. I can't do it myself unfortunately. Great video!
The problem with you patient types is that you always make things look easy! Excellent video and you've given me the courage to give it a shot. Thanks!
Love your tip about removing the doam light last and adding the extra material. Some of the other headline installers could learn from your video. Great job 👏🏾 👍🏾 👌🏿. Thank you.
How could 45 people dislike this video?? I thought it was fantastic! And it helped me make my decision to take my car to a professional to get headliner fixed properly
davidnesbitt09 I agree with you . I was skeptical if I should replace my headliner on my e36 BMW. I was going to buy the spray at Home Depot and just put it like if it was glue on paper on spots that are falling lol. It’s a harder than it looks. It’s useless to just use a quick spray because it will eventually still fall. It is a process that requires careful attention. It’s better to have it done properly and professionally. Watching this video convince me to take my car to a professional to get a new headliner on my car. It’s best to replace it brand new with a professional instead of trying to glue pieces that fall I think. If the headliner is taken off mine as well get a new one and have your car look like new again😝. Hey if it’s not done professionally, why even bother ? Lol I hate all the Mickey Mouse tricks that people use to save money lol. Using even a piece of tape on my car for whatever reason drives me crazy lol. It is your car . Be proud to own it and make it look good lol . I am a car lover 😎. I definitely want a brand new headliner on my car . Looks awesome when it’s brand new and clean and not just glued back on, the nick back way lol
Suggestion - If the board is decomposing like at 12:40 try sealing and hardening it with spray polyurethane before gluing the cover on. That will vastly increase the adhesion of the glue. After you remove all the soft, rotted material of course.
That is a GREAT video! You do a great job describing every detail and all of the fine points that need to be followed. AND, you’re great on camera and stick to the subject, not telling everyone what you did over the weekend, what you had for dinner, etc. lol!
I saw another video channel where the guy put a round wire cup like brush wheel in a hand drill and held at a very low angle to the headliner, the drill laid down close to the headliner, running at a high rpm, took the foam right off fairly fast. I tried and worked great after a little practice, your just skimming the surface and run the spin direction so that the wires bounce off the foam edge into the area you have already done instead of the area you haven't done yet, will keep the drill much more stable. Cuts through even the good condition old foam! The wire hand brush doesn't move the brush fast enough to literally knock off the foam with pulling on the headliner material causing damage. Definitely use 2 or 3 people!!!!!
I looked all over for a solid presentation that was simple and concise, nailed it. I'm repairing a headliner from a 91 Explorer that's in rough shape with tons of contours. My job will be much easier.
John, you did a great job and your workmanship shows in this video! I like people who show the details in their work and your narrative skills were very good also. You've earned my sub and hope you have a great week!
I will be doing my husband truck like you said but I will be doing the spay can the 3 M. Thanks you for taking the time to showing us how to do it. Your a really smart guy.
Brother, I'm so glad I stumbled upon your video!!! I was just about to use SPC's method where you pierce the headliner with a syringe-type needle attached to your can of adhesive. In the back of my mind, I always wondered HOW the glue would stick to the crumbly, deteriorated foam AND retain the fabric liner. You answered that question! This job looks time-consuming but NOT difficult if you're methodical. Thanks for sharing!
This is an absolutely great video with lots of step by step good instruction. Thanks so much and I am drumming up the courage to replace the headliner in my 1998 Toyota Corolla
I'm glad I ran into this! Great video! After watching your how to replace head liner, I'm one step in the loss of how you remove the one piece head liner from the interior of the vehicle as it is a one piece as shown on your work table. • Video of how to remove one piece headliner from cars interior was not shown in your video. Which I find most interesting how you or I can maneuver it out via door jam, door frame support? • I'm planning to replace my headliner myself with aid of your how to video on my 1999 Chevy 4 door 0ne ton dually.
Wow - thank you for this!! As others have said, yours is the best example out there. My headliner is very similar (‘88 S10 Blazer). I’ve had my materials prepped and ready for some time, but was just afraid to start gluing - now I’ll make it happen! I patched my tears and weak spots with fiberglass mat. I also laid down a thin layer of resin over the entire face of the liner board. Not enough to make it heavy and stiff, but just enough to give it some rigidity. I was also thinking it would help the glue stick better than it would to just the raw backer. Maybe was a big mistake - time will tell… Anyway, thanks again!!
Your fabric looks really nice to work with. Ive been working with the black suede finished fabric and it just soaks up the glue. The slightest bit too much and it shows white on the face. But thats what my customer wants. 😭😭 And he has his own guys installing them, and they tel me all the edges ar visible so have to glue edges to the underside. And allt the visor and light holes. I redid my landrover toof lining in a roll finish and it looks awesome.
Great video, great name. I really like the line: "The dust flies in your eyes, and it hurts!" (That's your dried out headliner foam). Definitely words of wisdom to heed! I checked out the spray gun on amazon, somebody obviously got a lemon:-( Looks like we might need a few fittings for it, nothing major, but I would think some people might struggle w/ that. Really great video. Thanks and I like your lucky needle website as well. Last comment - thanks for the links to all the items. A lot of people don't do that and it's super helpful. I'm subscribing just because of that!:-)
Hey Mark! Thanks for all the great comments! Im really glad you liked it all so much. You can also get the spray gun locally at harbor freight. I hope your headliner comes out great!
Excellent video! You've helped give me the confidence to tackle my [ancient] F-150 utility truck headliner. Your clean and organized work bench is just another sign of a true craftsman. Thanks again and good luck!
Very impressive. I love how detailed you are, and you seem to take pride in your work and make sure things are done right. That’s awesome. Thanks for a great video. Subscribed . I’ll be browsing through further videos of yours.
Thanks!! I have a new video coming out soon on a 06 BMW headliner and visors. That should also help. I already have the headliner removal video out here. It might help you being that its a newer car. th-cam.com/video/vgc4WEXd06g/w-d-xo.html
Great video. I'm about to take this on and the tips about the corners are really helpful. My headliner has many contours and I was worried about them. Now not as much. Thanks for sharing.
I found that a piece of loop auto carpet works well to remove all that old glue and foam. Use it as if it was sandpaper and that stuff comes off nicely. Also btw, that strange hole you found in the middle of the headliner was made by a high heel slipper.......
Best video on repairing a headliner!! I watched a ton of videos on headliner repair and this one had all the details that I was looking for!!! Will this work if you use suede? Keep the awesome videos coming!!
Thanks Karen!! Yes It will work with suede as well. I did some videos on a suede headliner here if your interested. th-cam.com/play/PLDUPNrOKk-RHJesWx_GzcAxnKu1QLQ5o0.html
Effectively presented and very complete. We especially appreciate your presenting the difficult and time-consuming parts, as well as your solutions for original backing which has deteriorated. As a minor note, you did not wear a respirator during spray of the adhesive, and did not show what kind of solvent we should use to clean the nozzle properly.
This was a great video! Recently daughter and I detailed her "new" (used) wheels. I was spot cleaning the headliner with a spray bottle and vinegar. Took care of every spots beautifully. BUT, two days later, the headliner fabric was drooping profusely!!! Vinegar which is good for soooo many things, however, NOT for spot cleaning headliners! There are no holes in the current headliner, so I think we may be able to use your process, gluing the current headliner back to the original shell. When I saw the length of the video, I didn't think I had time, but as I got into it, I could see why it was longer. You covered all but getting the headliner back into the vehicle. Any suggestions for removing and returning the headliner in a four door compact car? Is it flexible enough to bend and remove from one of the doors? Great instruction and entertaining! I'm a seamstress and I believe I can do this with success. Just two questions: How long for the glue to cure before replacing and suggestions regarding removing and returning the headliner for a 4 door.
Thanks Keith!! A lot of times you have to remove the front seats and slip it out the back door . Some times Ive even had to remove the door panel. But there is always a way to get it out. I did another video on a BMW headliner where I had to remove the front seats. You should watch that too. The glue should be dry to the touch before you stick the pieces together. Contact cement sticks when pressure is applied. Its can be installed back in the car as soon as you are done. I would also consider using new material. Headliner material is pretty cheep and you dont want to redo it again. Hope this helps!
I just did this job in a 89 Caprice without taking a window out. Cut the headliner in half, took it out, scraped it clean. Then I sprayed both sides, stuck the fabric to one side, trimmed and installed, put the other side in and carefully put them together and smoothed the rest of the fabric on. I only had to remove the rear trim, headliner came out and went in easy cut in half. Went back in just fine, light and fabric holds the joint together no problem. And I used an 18 dollar Walmart blanket for fabric and one can of glue. Close to perfect, should have scraped a little better. Or used thicker material. So my point is........you can do a decent job in a non-hatchback car for cheap without removing windows.
I think using glue and canvas to reinforce is a cool idea. I used polyester resin and fiberglass to strengthen weak areas on my headliner. it was my first time using fiberglass and it wasn’t too bad. very strong, but have to let it outgas for a few days before going back in the car.
Very informative video. I did have a question/suggestion on your 'fix' of broken part of the headliner.. Why not use thin fiberglass mat and lay up with resin, so it would guarantee not to come undone over time. Since you're working on the back, seems layin up w/ resin and fiberglass would really fix it for good!
Fiber Glass would be the best way to repair it. But also very time consuming... This project wasnt a high end project so It made more sense to do a quick repair. Probably should have mentioned that in the video...
I tried the 3m glue and sprayed it to make my head liner stay... It fell back down after 3 days smh 🤦🏾♂️ i saw a video from TH-cam lol so your definitely right
They are super helpful if you have any questions Also! Make sure you check out our forum www.Theupholsteryforum.com There is lots of helpful information and people on there as well
Just an 04 ranger with bad headliner he gave me 300 off for itinerary was just going to scrape off the foam cut to fit a small replacement about 3 inches wide the width of the truck, glue the foam up then reapply the cloth. I'm a paraplegic and just cant get around like you young guys
Damn that fabric looks like some thick ass 1/4" foam, I figured it was going to be 1/8 inch, im an old mechanic and have never re-foamed one yet, i was spoiled at the dealer:) they were all new.
I do this for my business, and for the holes for screws or tabs I use a hot poker tool (like a soldering gun) to burn headliner through. It cauterizes the threads in the same time. It stinks a little tho.
Thank you for such a great video it was VERY helpful everything is going great but My headline is in 2 pieces. The front piece has a air-conditioning pocket for the rear air vents (1994 Suburban). How do I remove the air condition vents covers? Do I have to un-glue that pocket and is there a certain glue I need to put it back together?
Im not sure for your particular case. You would have to send pictures and I could probably guide you. Best way to do that is make a post on our forum. www.theupholsteryforum.com
Very good video I learned a lot wire can I buy Ma material and the glue could you let me know the name of the stuff done a very good job what would it cost to do it a ranger 2004 thanks for the video👍
Hi Great video I have a 92 Cadillac Sedan Deville 4 door, I don't think I have enough room to get the headliner out without removing the front or rear window/windshield do you know if it is necessary to remove the glass on some vehicles to get it out in one piece without bending it to much. Sure wish you lived in Michigan.
Hello. So the first part of my liner came off very easily because I had moisture inside the truck for a long time and I think the glue just broke down the foam didn't degrade. I am wondering if I should even remove that foam because rubbing my fingers acrossed it and none of it comes off. And the liner I got to replace it has about half the thickness of what you have in the video. What do you think? Great video by the way.
Thanks! I would go ahead and remove all the foam and start with a clean slate. Other wise you risk having bumps show through. Headliner material usually is between 1/8 and 1/4 inch
Hey kiddo.. it the old man.. always start in the center stretch it to the outer edges. Don't worry about perfection because you always knows your own work.. you did excellent job .. I've rebuild cars for 50 years.. retired

How much did you end up paying? Thinking about doing the same thing
David what did you decide and how much did it cost
You are a card-carrying genius, man!!! Thank you so much, and let me second the comments of others about your natural teaching ability.
Thank you so much!!!
John ,thanks for the video.i did a Grand caravan, wow tough job,I’m very proud of myself to pull it off.

Great, Excellent video and work. It's so good when I found a good explanation in the middle of so many people who has nothing to teach or even say
Haha thanks for the nice compliment! Glad the video was helpful

Very happy to hear it helped so much!
IAM a pro in home improvements but I ant got nothing on you . Your amazly talented. Keep it up you will be very rich one day.
Thank you so much! Glad you enjoyed the video!
Hey John...instead of using a wire brush...we use a hand full of sunbrella acrylic canvas scraps, and it rubs off a whole lot easier!
Very interesting! I have never heard of that. Ill give it a try. Thanks!
Impressive!! Excellent craftsmanship.. Mad skills!!! No I know why I was quoted $475 to have mine redone. Thanks for the awesome video!!!!
Thanks!!!
Thank you for being so thorough. Amazing job. BTW, you have a great teaching demeanor. Thanks again :)

Thanks for showing me how to redo my headliner. You do a spectacular job showing how.

Wow, this is one of the best instructions videos I’ve seen. Thanks so much.!!!!!
This is an absolutely great video with lots of step by step good instruction. Thanks so much and I am drumming up the courage to replace the headliner in my 1998 Toyota Corolla
Great video guide to replace headliners. Very professionally done. I appreciate the guidance in your video.
I'm glad I ran into this!

Wow! ! Very nicely done! And great instructions! Keep up the great work!
Awesome looking material. Alot thicker than I would of thought
Great video, always good to see young skilled hands at work.
Thanks David!
From one tradesman to another....Well Done! Very informative step by step Video i think you've done a GREAT JOB! kudos!!
Thank you very much!!
Thank you dearly for taking the time to do this.
Your welcome! Glad it helped!
Thanks for putting this up it makes the job a lot easier.
Great Video. Just a note I mark all the screw holes before I reinstall.
Thanks! I like that idea. I will try it next time.

Ive been working with the black suede finished fabric and it just soaks up the glue. The slightest bit too much and it shows white on the face.

Glad it was so helpful! You can do it!
I am very impressed! Great video!...and you are easy on the eyes! Good job! Excellent!
Thanks Barbara!!
I found that a piece of loop auto carpet works well to remove all that old glue and foam. Use it as if it was sandpaper and that stuff comes off nicely. Also btw, that strange hole you found in the middle of the headliner was made by a high heel slipper.......
That's an interesting trick. Ill have to try that out.
Great video I'm going to use this video when I do my headliner thanks appreciate the time and the knowledge I might start even doing this on the side
So that is how pro's do it. Noob here got a lot of idea. Thanks very much.
Awesome video. Love how you showed every step. Maybe mark those visor holes as you cover?
Awesome job little boy God Bless you

Best video on repairing a headliner!! I watched a ton of videos on headliner repair and this one had all the details that I was looking for!!! Will this work if you use suede? Keep the awesome videos coming!!
Thanks Karen!! Yes It will work with suede as well. I did some videos on a suede headliner here if your interested.

Great video for sure. However I would surely use a respirator when using the paint gun. Very toxic fumes coming out of that gun. Thanks!
Yes you are right. I should...
Thanks Bob. Glad you found it useful!
I recommend using "Malco A&L Cosmoline Remover" for removing contact cement
Great video! Awesome job! You catch the details, I’d miss. Thanks brother!
Glad to help!
You are very entertaining! And you explain even subtle details very well. Thank you.
Very complete video, very good explained and very entertaining. Thanks a lot!
Really Happy to hear you liked it! I wasn't sure what you all would think of the few jokes I had in this one. Thanks
I think using glue and canvas to reinforce is a cool idea. I used polyester resin and fiberglass to strengthen weak areas on my headliner. it was my first time using fiberglass and it wasn’t too bad. very strong, but have to let it outgas for a few days before going back in the car.
Excellent video!!!!!! Thanks for sharing your experience.
Excellent skilled directions.
Outstanding sir, how can I get my hands on that adhesive?
That was awesome. Thank you for taking the time to do such a detailed Vudeo.
Nice job bro. Very informative and you have mad skills. Very professional. Thanks for the vedio.
Thanks Kevin!
Great Video! Thanks for the tips! Keep them coming! Any tips for older cars that use more than one headliner boards?
Nice Workmanship.
I learned a lot. Thanks!
I tried the 3m glue and sprayed it to make my head liner stay... It fell back down after 3 days smh 🤦🏾♂️ i saw a video from TH-cam lol so your definitely right
Try Permatex. It works for me.
Upholstery bad-ass! My headliner is pristine but I wanna redo it anyway! Lol!
Haha thanks man! You could always to an upgrade to suede or something nice.

Super smart with the bungee cord.

Thank you for the video dude! Was very informative, cheers!
Damn that fabric looks like some thick ass 1/4" foam, I figured it was going to be 1/8 inch, im an old mechanic and have never re-foamed one yet, i was spoiled at the dealer:) they were all new.
Very good job, everything is perfect with this video
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed the video!
This looks too professional for what I have in mind!
Thank you sir for an excellent video and craft work. I'll look into your seat repair course when I get to that point. (close)
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it!
I do this for my business, and for the holes for screws or tabs I use a hot poker tool (like a soldering gun) to burn headliner through. It cauterizes the threads in the same time. It stinks a little tho.
great tip! thanks hady!!!
That was a great job well done start to finish. Thank you for sharing

You're awesome man. Thanks for one more very good video.
Thanks! Henrique!
Excellent work!
Good instructions on how too know how will do Thanks lucky needle will do
Thanks!!!! Send pictures!!
You do great work. Thanks for the video.
We have had good luck using a wire wheel on a drill to get the foam off, fast and easy
I will have to try that. Thanks!
Very well taught.
Thank You!
What kind of fabric was that? A flat weave? Suede? Great job
Thanks! Its just regular basic headliner fabric from the upholstery store.
