I'm about to give the headliner and pillar trims in my E46 a go. Eases my mind a bit to see a professional using the Permatex canned glue with good results. Thanks for the video.
great video. Did half of Camry headliner and pretty much 3/4 of Permatex can gone..so I started thinking why do you need to apply that much adhesive if the issue is foam backing? It'll degrade and the material detach anyway regardless of how much glue you put on?
We find that if not enough glue is added and/or not pushing down on fabric to really create that good bond to the board will usually result in job sagging in a few areas almost straight after application or within 12 months.
great video very helpful, gave me the confidence to give it a try.... did not do a perfect job but your tips and video helped a get a much better result. Many thanks.
if i remember well i did my vw passat sedan headliner with 4 or 5 cans, less than that it.s risky because can adhesives are not like professional ones and you want 100% cover and that felt should stay glued on many years. also a spray can doesn't have the coverage and pattern of a paint gun on compressor
A few days ago I went out and bought a cheap spray gun so I could buy a quart of professional glue and spray it on like you normally do. But then I saw this video with the cans. Do you recon the cans will hold up just as long as the Landau or other pro product? I don’t want to do this job and have it fail. I’m using hard to find foam-backed Alcantara to redo the headliner of my Audi.
Top notch demonstration. Would that colour be a match for the typical standard vy headlining? Looks similar to what’s in my vy but I’ve learned the hard way that pictures/video can be deceiving. Not fun 😅 I’m curious to know how many different colours were used during vy/vz, plus the variations with interior trim pieces. I would like to change the colour up when I do my headlining
VY VZ only came out with two options, Light grey flat knit or anthracite black flat knit. The earlier models VX VT VU came out with the above plus also a light grey Velour option. So the replacement materials we use on these models is our #3 light grey Velour #7 light grey flat knit #5 anthracite black charcoal flat knit
Any tips on removing the old glue/foam from an Audi headliner? Do you always scrape the foam using a brush or do you sometimes use a chemical to remove the glue from the board? My car seems to be very sticky and I'm wondering if I should also remove the glue...
Thanks for the great videos. I took the plunge and replaced the headliner on my 2007 Accord. At first I was going to spray patch it but when I saw your video I got inspired to pull the whole thing down and start from scratch. I found the perfect match fabric here in Los Angeles and all went well. I did have a few indentations from pressure marks that haven't gone away. Will these flatten out over time with heat when outdoors?
Depending on exactly what the pressure marks are from, say if it was caused from a puddle of glue build up which then made the foam backing in that one spot go all tight then not much can be done. But if it's just from pressure or object denting it, then an upholstery skewer could help pull out the imperfection or a steamer. Otherwise just leave it to come out over time when car warms up usually 👍
Please what is the capacity of those adhesive glue sprays? 1L ,500ml or 300ml In my city somewhere in South Africa there is only 300ml can on the market.
sorry for this late question. i hope you will have time to reply..i bought some heavy microfiber cloth, to reline the headliner on my 2014 ford fusion ( Mondeo in the civilized world ) and like to use it. as it cleans easier... and softer feel... more of a suede look and feel to it.. as it has no foam backing to the cloth.. i am wondering about the glue seeping thru the micro fiber... do you have any thoughts on this. thank you
Spraying a very thin layer of glue, with light coats should get you by. Just test on a small section first. And always keep the motion moving when spraying glue, and stop and start the sprays off fabric then move towards it to reduce glue residue build up accidentally on back of the fabric.
So we have done this before, sometimes the foam is so new still it won't budge, or depending on the type of job, Like felt headliners they don't unstick easily, in this scenario we may spray glue onto the old fabric or old foam and let it soak in, then do another layer, so twice the amount of glue sometimes. It's not recommended to spray onto old products, but some rare jobs do require it. A good tool to remove old stubborn foam is wire brush, sander, or nylon brush on the end of drills. But be careful not to eat into the board

I've noticed on some headliner replacement is the amount of small "lumpy" bits in the recessed areas. How does one avoid this because it looks ugly and unlike the factory version. Is it due to the way the glue is put down ? What are your thoughts on brushing the glue on ? How does the factory do it ?
Sometimes the board needs a gentle sanding to reduce this appearance. Also depends on how the glue is applied. Factory headliners may hide this because of the age of the job itself, eg: fabric is no longer tight against the board.
@@ReecesAutoHeadliningRepairs I agree that the surface needs to be as smooth as possible which is why the factory headliners always look mint due to the baseboard being brand new. I also noticed how nicely the glue lays out of the Permatex brand can compared to some cans that spray the glue out in a more stringy fashion. I'd probably avoid the latter to avoid potential lumpiness. I plan to do the headliner in my BMW E36 M3 in the future as it's in storage for now until I finish a shed project. Then I'll have the time and space to have a crack at it. Do you know where I can get something close to the material I have ? It's a black velour (Schwartz as they call it in German). @@tonymontana897 also I forgot to mention is that if you spray glue too far away from the job it catches air and drys to a ball or string which then can make the surface bumpy. Spraying too close causes the glue to puddle. So it's finding what works, and can vary depending on glue used and temperature on the day. The ebony velour product we sell on our eBay page, comes close to BMW Velour black.
