    Nice cookies, cookie.😁
    One thing I also do with my cookies is to add deep cross hatch texture to them. This as three benefits.
    1) If the glaze does run then the piece and the cookie stick in less places and there will be gaps to get between them and separate them.
    2) If the piece is not completely flat or warps a bit when firing/drying then the bumps give it point contact location the keep it from rocking
    3) The texture allows a bit of air circulation under the piece when firing.

      @SarahWaltonPottery  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      AWESOME Advice!! I’ve seen people use texture on their cookies and I just thought they were being extra fancy…but you bring up some great points!! Thanks for sharing!

      @@SarahWaltonPottery glad to share. Note that my cookies are currently "flat" cookies - no raised middle like yours.
      This means they can curl / potato-chip when they dry. To avoid that I stack them (with wax paper between) and put weight on top when they are drying.

    • @connecticutaggie
      @connecticutaggie ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@SarahWaltonPottery I do like your raised middle cookies. I think I am going to make some of those the next time I bake cookies. Always good to have different options.

      I’ve stack them with weights before but not using was paper…another great idea!! I’ll definitely try that one too. I’ve got a lot of flat things that you’re advise will come in handy. 😊

      My online teacher uses cat litter- filled cloth bags ( made of old clothes ) of different weights and then puts them in the platters and other flat pieces.

      you brat I am using the same kiln that you are about to retire,, and it is borrowed as well. Congratulations on your new kiln I have always enjoyed your videos, and felt somewhat of a kinship due to our similar circumstances and our relic 🎉but functionable kilns . Now you are part of the pottery establishment, fancy schmancy kiln and all You could say , now. you are kiln-it.
      oh well i am excited for you iThe reality is I would join you with a new kiln if i could justify it but having had parkinson’s disease for 25 years i can’t somehow feel justified in purchasing one i am so grateful to be able to borrow one. i only hand build so i will putter along my merry way making all kinds of fun items with my kiln adding even more surprises to the finished product.
      I have always wanted to spend some time using just pastel glazes. You introduced me to your wonderful pink Thank you that was a big moment It is a beautiful pink.

    Thank you so much for this realllly helpful video!! I handbuild and slipcast so I got a mold of kiln stilts and I just don’t put the wires in them. But I do use cookies ALOT. A friend of mine accidentally ordered some cone 10 clay so that’s what I make my cookies from. They last forever!! OMG YOURE GETTTING A NEE KILLLLLN!!! I am beyond excited for you!!!!! If you poke holes in the big lump that will help as well. I just make a bunch of flat cookies and stack them as needed so I don’t have cookies that I can’t use for other pots. I can place them on top of eachother in any formation for any size pot. Also I place the slab on a piece of hardibacker board used for shower walls, and then cut them out so I don’t have to touch them and have them end up bowing. I place another piece of hardibacker board on top and make a big stack of them. The hardibacker board makes them dry super super fast because it absorbs moisture extremely fast!! Hope that helps.

    • @walkerpottery9296-Natalie
      @walkerpottery9296-Natalie ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I need to get some of that board Michele - is it heavier than drywall?

    • @SarahWaltonPottery
      @SarahWaltonPottery  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, hardi backer board is heavier..I have some in my studio as a surface on one of my work table and it really does absorb…a lot as Michele says. If you leave clay on it for any amount of time your clay will crust. So the way that Michele is suggesting to use is brilliant!! I believe that Hardi backer board is made of a concrete material. So it’s fairly heavy. 🤭

      Thanks sooo much Michele!! I always love your suggestions! I love the idea of making lots of flat cookie and just layer them!!

    Congrats on your new kiln, Sarah! I know of your excitement, as it's just what I felt when I got my very first kiln last year. Brand new Skutt (not named yet), and which was diving off the deep end since I'm really still such a beginner! But was really tired of not having control over my firings at our local pottery shop. Will have to make some of these raised cookies...only have flat ones now. I've only been hand building until last month when I purchased a Vevor pottery wheel, and so teaching myself to throw. These cookies seem like a good beginner's piece to throw. Hard to get in much practice though since I'm still working 40+ hours a week. Can't wait to retire in just a couple more years!!!! Which is even more exciting than a new piece of equipment!!! LOL 😂 Cheers from NM USA! 👋💚 Love your videos!

      Hi Joanne!! We have similar stories! Tho I started with buying a wheel..I wanted a kiln right away because firing at the studio was limited to me, we had to buy clay from them and they only stocked 2 clays…from someone who loves to use all the crayons in the box, this wasn’t cutting it for me! My Dad had a friend who had a kiln (1961 kiln sitter) and all I had to do was pick it up..i jumped at it. Sight unseen..I was grateful but was like 🤔🤔🤔😵‍💫 now I have to figure out how to use this relic…No instructions, but I did find a couple of vids on TH-cam so…that takes me to today. As you know I’ve seen struggling and need to ramp up my firings so I have no choice but to bite the bullet and jump in.. that’s AMAZING that you bought a NEW Skutt! I believe it’s an amazing investment in your craft and side hustle..I’ve only recently retired from my FT job (March on my 55th Bday!) And I need a reliable studio essential to keep up with me! Haha! Thank you for sharing your story! I love learning about my viewers, it feels even more like a community! 🤗🥰

    Hi Sarah, congratulations to your new kiln ❤🎉. I got a question, could you be so nice to make a video about how to fire your new kiln the first time, I mean what to do if you have a new kiln. I have my very first one sitting and waiting for the electrician to connect, which will take properly another few months, I'm not having a vent and I'm a newbie at pottery, I mean know a lot of safety precaution, but i don't know when to leave the peephole plugs out or in and when to using that other venting prop brick to lift the lid while heating? And what to do if you have no kiln vent🙏. ( mine is going to be firing in the shed) Maybe you could help me out 😅❤ thank you sarah, I love your videos

      Hello!! How exciting for you too! When I got the kiln in my videos it too sat in my garage for a long while until i finally picked up the courage to fire it...and as you mentioned, I had a licensed Electrician come in and do the hard wire as well I had permits pulled AND I had it inspected by ESA to feel confident when firing. Being in Canada we have different rules etc. But once I fired it for the first time, I gained confidence.
      Now with a brand new digital kiln, I'll be nervous again, but I ABSOLUTELY will be filming and sharing this experience with you all and of course any tips along the way 😉!

      @SarahWaltonPottery I'm so excited 😊, thank you. I couldn't find any videos here on TH-cam how to fire a kiln without a vent, if I could save the money for the beginning and not buying a vent would be great, long-term I probably going to buy one. Pottery is an expensive hobby 😅 but every cent worth. And didn't expect how much it costs to get an electrician to wire the kiln and having a new breakerbox installed 😳, well Pottery teached me a lot of patience 🤣🙌, anyway thank you again for sharing all your knowledge 🤗❤️

    Hi from Colorado! Just hooked up my kiln (Skutt 1027-3) and am also name searching. I have a question about your design - why the raised bit and why the hole in the middle? Guess that’s 2 questions. 😉

    • @SarahWaltonPottery
      @SarahWaltonPottery  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hello Colorado!! Skutt 1027 is a popular kiln, and a good one too! Congrats!! I’m fond of glaze drips and they are a huge part of my aesthetic. By creating a raised part that will sit within the foot ring, if my glaze runs too far, instead of the pot fusing to he cookie or my shelf, by raising the pot up, the drips can surpass the bottom and will be caught on the cookie. This is a win win. I can easily grind the drip off and save the foot…And the cookie protects my shelf. The hole in the middle help the cookie dry more evenly and helps release the pot from the cookie. Hope that helps! 😉

    Great tutorial! Do you kiln wash the cookies BEFORE the bisque fire, or AFTER? Thank you!

    • @SarahWaltonPottery
      @SarahWaltonPottery  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Sorry for the delayed response! Firstly, Thank you so much! As for your question, i prefer to apply kiln wash when the piece has been bisque fired. As the cookie is porous it absorbs the water so you get the best application. There are times when I need to use the cookie right away and there is no time for me to wait for a bisque so I will take a cookie from greenware and use it in a glaze fire but without kiln wash. I haven't tried applying wash during leather hard stage, but that could potentially work too. Maybe I'll have to test that out. Thanks for watching! Cheers!

    • @SarahWaltonPottery
      @SarahWaltonPottery  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The raised part of the cookie is designed to fit in the hollow of the foot so there is a space between the foot ring and the cookie for glaze to drip off and not get stuck to the kiln shelf or cookie. I hope this makes sense...

  • @SaritaBenson
    @SaritaBenson 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    I just found you on TH-cam! Love your channel! Question about the cookies…after you bisque fire and add kiln wash, do you glaze fire them alone before using them with mugs on top?

    • @SarahWaltonPottery
      @SarahWaltonPottery  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thank you! I'm so happy you found me too & just love hearing from my audience! To answer your question, after adding kiln wash you can use as a cookie right away, just add a piece of work, same as if you are just putting a pot directly on a kiln shelf. AND, if you don't intend on adding kiln wash, you can go direct to glaze fire with a piece of pottery on it. As long as it is ABSOLUTELY bone dry. I do it all the time, because often I'm in desperate need for the cookie. lol. I will then add kiln wash later, it doesn't adhere as well but when your desperate, you do what ya gotta do! 🤭 Hope this makes sense!

    • @SarahWaltonPottery
      @SarahWaltonPottery  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Sonja! Cookies, especially raised cookies are used to protect your pots and your kiln shelves. I use a lot of drippy glazes that can and will run off my pots so by raising it up slightly I’m able to prevent the pot from sticking to my kiln shelf, thus ruining my pot and possibly damaging my shelf. When space is left between the bottom of your piece and the shelf, glaze can run off the pot in a tear like shape that is easily ground off and voila, pot saved. Hope that answers your question! 🥰
