I have really missed your kiln openings! I prefer the recorded openings the best because you are trying to do your opening and people interrupt your train of thought. It seems to go smoother when you video. I love love your work and your trials and errors! It has helped me immensely!!!💌

Love that ‘kiln/gal pal’!! I’m going to have to remember that one! 🤭 Thank you so much for watching and always supporting my work!! I’ve been slow to edit lately, I’ve got lots of footage just haven’t sat down at the computer to do the work😬 I’ll get some new stuff out soon! Cheers 🥰

I absolutely love the purple mugs just as they are at the end! I’m so glad you found a way to fire your spoons so they don’t do this. For the mug that fell over, did you know they make kiln stilts without the pins in them? Those are perfect for using under pits your afraid are going to run. Love this kiln opening. Such amazing pieces!
Hi Michele! Thank you so much!! I didn’t know that there are kiln supports without pins! I’m going to have to get some!! I’ve been putting off throwing my raised cookies…which would also help, but the cookies would be great! Thanks again!! 🥰
@@SarahWaltonPottery I do some slipcasting and have several of the stilt molds and since they are just open pour molds they are easy to keep going so I pour them every other day. I just don’t put the stilts in mine. I recently got 2 stilt molds that have super deep cavities so I can pour those as deep as I want!!
I like your comment about it being a good kiln opening because you learned so much. It's so true. I learn something every time I open up that lid. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Lisa..they grew on me, it took a min, but I don't mind the, as you put it...'moody' love that!! They did sell and are both in their new homes. I have to remind myself that just because it may not be my fav someone else may just love it! I just watched your video this morning on my TV...stunning!!!! so I'll be leaving you a comment shortly too! 🤭
Hi Sarah, lovely to see you, I do love both formats but never get to see a live as a live because of the time difference. I love your spoons I keep meaning to have a go at some. I am a water sign too ( Cancer) and love pinks and sea colours. I think the f*** mugs are brilliant and the crack actually accentuates the feeling behind it. Totally love the platter the textures and colours are amazing, shame about the handle but stunning non the less. Looove the Peppered plum flux blossom combo bowl wow😮❤
Hi Julia!! Thank you so much! It must be something to do with the water sign in us...pinks and blues! Just LOVE!!! You are such a talented hand builder and love your videos too, go for the spoons they are a lot of fun....I've been firing them inside a kiln support and that seems to help keep them straight. but I have to keep that in mind when i add the knobs on the end so that they still fit🤪

Hi Sarah! I'm so glad you loved your Name Story....there are some gorgeous combos in this opening, and on that toasty clay I love it! Love your musical intros😄I just ordered the other Spectrum glazes too, they are lovely. Thanks soooo much!! It has grown on me...I LOVE it on light clay, so it took me a min to get used to in on the buff speckled clay...but after looking at them for a while its become a winner.
Hi Janice! I read your comment a while ago and thought that I had responded but it appears that I didn't...sorry about that! Yes, I have been using kiln post, actually inserting the salad server inside the hole of a 5 or 6 inch post and it's been working amazingly! It even straighten a few out. I did have only one problem... is when the knob on the end is too big! 🤪 Thanks so much for your suggestion!!
Hi Sarah, another great unload. I loved your tray and the combo, sangria and autumn purple on the mug. Looks really good!❤ I was wondering why you were wearing such heavy coat in Spring!😂💞
@@SarahWaltonPottery I don’t think I could survive the cold over there, but it must be nice in the Summer!😄 I love your videos Sarah, thanks for sharing!💞
@@anasclayhouse yes the cold really sucks! I don’t know how I survive it! 🥶😂 mind you this past winter was very mild for my area! Like freakishly mild. Usually we get an extremely bitterly cold Jan-Feb…like -10 - -20C…miserable..so this day wasn’t bad at all -1C haha. Spring and Summer are just wonderful!! I filmed a kiln opening yesterday, and I’m just wearing a light jacket🤭
Thanks for the firing information. I have a manual kiln but I think I can still translate it to switch times to do something similar. Note: It looks like you did not not quite make it to Cone 6 (per Orton's chart). You were just short of it. Also, per Orton's chart, Cone 6 target is 2165F when final rate (last 200F) is 27F/hr so I think that matches perfectly with a 2172 finish since your final rate was 120F/hr.
Thanks for this! Cone reading seems to have so many interpretations...I had recently watched a video that I linked in the description from Orton which turned my view and understanding upside down, Id love your opinion. I've always had to rely on cone reading with my manual kiln, now I use it more for verification. Anyhoo, in the video they were saying that once the cone deforms at any degree it has successfully reached the target and that only nominal (a degree or two in temp) results between the bend degrees. Check it out, I'd love to hear from you what you think, you always have such valuable information and insight!
Thanks@@SarahWaltonPottery. Great video (both yours and Orton's). I think the distinction is whether "Cone 6" is a point or a region. His view (which makes practical sense) is that "Cone 6" is a region the cone bend you saw indicates you are in that region. Other documentation from Orton (including the Cone Template he mentioned) say that the target Cone (the point) is reached when the tip of the cone is level with the notch where the base of the cone meets the indicator portion of the cone. Note also that the temperature target for where that happens depends on the final rate of your firing. For Cone 6 and a very slow final rate (27F/hr) is 2165F. That is very close to what your Kiln temperature probe saw.
@@connecticutaggie Makes total sense…Thank you! I used to read my cone like this before I saw the video, but your right, he did show the graph and explained, like you, about speed of rise in temp. Thanks again!! 🥂
OMG Joseph! I just LOVE this idea! Since filming this video, back in Jan, I started using a kiln post and putting the entire spoon inside, but my most recent kiln opeing..still to be edited... the end of the spoon was too big to fit so I went back to using stilts only to have a ton of warping. WHY didn't I think of your suggestion before! duh! 🤪 I love you guys so much, you have the BEST suggestions!!! THAND YOU!!! 🥰
The purple haze amaryllis combo I liked on that first mug but the second mug it looks like it went a little too brown? I would add a flux on that second mug but it looked pretty good on the first mug to me 🤔

Thank you for your video. I have still not fired in my new kiln (which is also my first) kiln and am afraid of getting glaze drips. When you glaze your pieces so close to the bottom I'm surprised that more of the glaze doesn't go onto the shelf. Do you just use kiln wash on your shelves or is the pottery sitting on cookies?
I see that you've checked out my Cookies Video and I'm so glad you found it helpful! I ALWAYS have ample kiln wash on my shelves to protect my shelf and my work...its pretty easy to grind the bottom of your pieces if need be. 🤭
