Beautiful work. Funny. When I open I do the opposite with my fingers. I use my index to hold down my thumb. Now I want to try your method of using the thumb to hold down the index finger
They use the wooden bats when throwing, that way you can just take off the bat and let the item dry to leather hard. If you prefer to throw with wetter clay this is a big help ^^

Why wipe the glaze off the base when you have a footring, just wipe the footring.
It can move a lottt and drip underneath
