It's Time To Put This Debate To Bed!!

- For the longest time, we've been able to put hard drives in our PS2s and backup/play our games from them. Not only is it convenient, the games also load faster as there's no seeking through a CD/DVD for data and music. Then SSDs came along, which are naturally able to reach much higher read/write speeds than HDDs.
And then the online arguing and trolling began: "oh you should be using an SSD instead of a HDD because it loads faster" and "you're an idiot for not using an SSD" and all that jazz. The counter-argument for this has always been that the PS2's HDD adapter (and possibly the PS2 itself) is bottlenecked so it can't read and write to the drive fast enough to make getting an SSD worth it.
I've not seen any clear and concise evidence that an SSD was any better. I've only had other people's word to go by before deciding to go for a HDD instead. All the debates online only told me one thing: if there was an improvement, it was negligible... and a HDD is half the price.
But now, I'm finding out for myself. Several true side-by-side comparisons of loading times between a HDD and a (certainly not bargain-basement) SSD. Both are a lot faster than reading from disc, but how do they compare to each other?
It's time to put this debate to bed...

Ah, I forgot about those SD to SATA adapters. People use those too 😅 What're those like?
Stay safe ❤
According to The Cutting Room Floor, The reason why the loading times in GTA San Andreas were the same was because the main loading screen is just a 30 Second timer. I can't say if it's the same for Vice City, but i'm willing to guess it is due to them using the same engine.
On other platforms like PC and Xbox, they're real loading screens and there speeds can differ.
Ahh that's good to know. Good thing I didn't just stick to those loading screens 🤣
@@TheMultiGenGamer Yep. Great video by the way!
Well I could happily say that games being read off a hard drive(hhd) is faster than a USB and a physical disc copy 😎
I don't think all of your PS1, PS2 and PS3 games would all fit on a 1TB HDD/SSD if you plan to use it on your Backwards Compatible PS3, due to the fact that some PS3 games would also need to be installed onto the HDD (it's required to play them too) along with most PS3 games needing an update from the internet for fixes, new features, etc.
My advice for PS3 is to just put the backup games onto an external HDD or SSD (I think only up to 2TB would work, over 2TB won't work) and use the internal one for the game data, update data, DLC and save data, along with homebrew features if your thinking of jailbreaking the PS3 (be careful not to get banned online though if you wish to play online or with friends online).
For me, I'll probably just boot my PS2 games (and maybe PS1 too) from an HDD (big or small) on PS2 hardware (gonna hope to try it on a launch Japanese model too with a very different HDD and Network adapter) and PS3 games from either a HDD (small) or SSD externally plugged into one of the USBs and the internal drive for everything else.
Good solid advice. I looked up whether a PS3 could run games off an external drive but results said officially it couldn't. However I hadn't taken into account the fact it'll be softmodded, which increases the chances of it working. I'll have a gander for an external drive too 👍
@@TheMultiGenGamer you can run games off a external hdd with a softmodded ps3 BUT loading speeds will be a problem. Alot of games will have stuttering
The problem is that the interface is much slower than any of the drives. You can get a drive 10x faster, it will perform the same.
They will pretty much load at the same speeds. The only real diff is the ssd should live longer and it wont vibrate your console
