  • Being protected from the hardships of life can be a good thing, especially for children, but what happens when suffering becomes inevitable? If we choose to live an authentic Christian life, we need an "antifragile" faith that, not only endures, but is strengthened by the suffering and hardships that will come. Fr. Mike encourages us to face adversity with joy, knowing that our faith will become more resilient as a result.
Fr. Mike is also a presenter in these faith formation programs from Ascension:
Belonging: Baptism in the Family of God (bit.ly/2vQgGRx)
Chosen: This is Your Catholic Faith (bit.ly/2nCKKLK)

Hey Fr. Mike, been watching through your channel and I am absolutely stunned, had no idea Catholics had such sharp arguments and such a great understanding of the world this whole time and I hadn't known. Part of what had alienated me from religion for so long was the timidity of protestants in the face of the modern world, but, as you said, the Catholic Church is anti-fragile and has not stepped one inch back in the face of modernity.

I’m considering converting to Catholicism, but there’s a host of reasons why I can’t although I long to. At the beginning of the year my New Years resolution was to get closer to God. It came to pass, and in doing so I asked God to help me bring me closer to His Son Jesus Christ. I’ve fasted and discerned and if I’m listening correctly, the Church is where he’s at. I cannot doubt his Word.
Protestants do not honor and called Mary blessed like the Bible said many generations would come to do. I would dare not defy His Word because John 1 says He is the word.
Protestants are missing 7 books of the Bible of which all are read by Catholics and was read in synagogues by Jesus himself. I dare not reject his word.
Protestants reject the papacy which is the apostolic succession of St. Peter who’s Jesus told to lead HIS church. I dare not reject His word and command of Peter to lead the Church.
Protestants see the Eucharist as a symbol and not as the literal Body of Christ. So our communion is near invalid and we do not understand the value.
Protestants are unaware of the purgatory, which they would be had the known 7 books are missing from the Old Testament. I pray that if there is one, based on what I’ve heard and read about it, I not go there
Protestants rarely ever confess our sins to one another yet Catholics do it so very often in their Sacrament of Penance.
Protestants from what I have seen are not so obligated to a committed prayer life like Catholics hence why the catholic faithful are known to have done astonishing things because of their connection and relationship to God via prayer
I could go ON AND ON, but these are the things I’ve come to realize that as a Protestant I wish I would have known. I wish I could convert but for the sake of my parents who are conservative baptists one of which is a minister- I just simply can’t. My family would be devastated. So pray the hearts of those close to me will open up. Pray God will divinely intervene and make a way. Lord have mercy.😞

Michael C I'm going through the same struggles, but I'm Greek Orthodox. What helped me: Talk about it with your parents. Debate them, but with an open heart and mind. Get interested in your denomination, so that they can see, that you have found the true faith no matter how hard they try. It is your life, it's a very important decision. Your parents have to realise that you have God given Free Will, and that you ought to use it. If you have any other questions feel free to tell me. I'll keep you in my prayers and Godspeed.

I will pray for you, Michael, and I can't help wondering if God hasn't planned all along for you to be the one to bring the rest of your family to the fulness of truth. Of course, that road may require you to suffer as Christ did on your own cross...

Fr. Mike, I couldn't agree more... We lost our 19 year old daughter unexpectedly last December. My family and I have chosen to #CHoosejoy. I have always had a strong faith but in these past 7 1/2 months I have chosen an "antifragile" faith. My faith has been strengthened by my intense suffering. In the first 3 months after the loss of our daughter, I was on the couch day in and day out. I googled 24/7 on different Catholic videos. So happy I came across one of yours! One day while I was listening to one of your youtube videos my 17 year old daughter walked past my office and said, "Mom, are you listening to Father Mike Schmitz?" I replied yes... her comment... "we watch him in religion class, we all love him, he is such a spaz!" Thank you for helping me to #CHoosejoy and for spreading His good word.

It has been my experience that this is the difference between the prosperity gospel taught in many churches. The Catholic church while acknowledging the terrific love of God and the benefits of that it's history and teaching shows the reality of suffering. Jesus suffered, if we want to imitate Him, we will suffer even redemptively.
I look at it like this: If I go to long without obstacles and or suffering, I'm doing something wrong. Satan is too happy with me.

This is so true, I've noticed a common trend among Christian/Christian Catholics (my self included) in which we try and separate our selves from people or things that may challenge, or have us question our faith. It is only then till we start seeing how much more we need to grow and learn to strengthen our faith, and have us build that "anti-fragile Christianity".

Woah thanks for this vid. Truly what I needed right now. People now a days give up top easily. They become crazed and tormented by tge spirits the world attacks them with but an anti-fragile catholic takes it all in as a way to grow, and takes it as a responsibility to help his fragile brothers and sisters. Amen Father

I was lucky when I became a Christian at age ten. They (the Baptists) told us the truth. They said we'd be persecuted simply because we chose Jesus, and one day we'd probably face the choice of Jesus or immediate death. And we still chose Jesus! I'm still waiting for the day I have to choose, and it seems like it's getting nearer and nearer. I know thousands of my brothers and sisters in Christ are already there, and I pray for them.

The world needs stronger people. Strong people can help the weak and make the world a better place. Whatever your beliefs I wish you well. Thank you Father Mike. I feel exactly that. With all the church scandals my faith in the church was shaken but persisting, accepting the truth and seeking direction through Christ, I was led me to the bishop of my diocese and he helped me not only find peace but to become stronger or as you say anti-fragile about believing in The Holy Catholic Church and my role as an informed Christian.

How appropriate for today. I am thinking of the story of Jesus in the boat and the apostles are panicked. They wake up Jesus and he is without fear. I am going to stay in the boat even during the storm because Jesus has it under control. I love these videos. Thanks Father Mike and you are in my daily prayers along with all your brother priests...including those who forgot what it means to be a priest and of course the victims. We are all in the boat: and yet, I reiterate St. Peter, "Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.

Thank you for the insights, Father. I totally agree. Crisis is a test of faith. We can overcome everything if we stay in faith, keep believing in the intervention of the Holy Trinity.
