  • Brothers and Sisters, because of the importance of the subject matter we thought we should share a special video message today. Bishop Robert Barron recently gave a sermon that has occasioned a lot of interest and some controversy. Fr. Mark Goring responded to some of what Bishop Barron said, but since part of what he said is an area that I have a deep concern about and also some expertise in, I thought I should offer some friendly comments. I hope you find them useful.

    Thank you Father, for an excellent talk. To be fair to Bishop Barron, I haven't heard his sermon yet, but the other aspect that is so often misunderstood is that of 'conscience'. So many people think it is simply a matter of "I think", or worse still, "I feel", in other words simply a subjective judgment of the emotions, whereas in fact -- as I was taught at least -- it is the "moral judgment of the intellect". In other words, it should be an attempt to first of all objectively evaluate the morality of an action and then -- only then -- apply this obective standard to ourselves and our own concrete situation and actions. I would love to hear you talk about this aspect of the problem as well.

    I'm Catholic and I was appalled and saddened by some of Bishop Barron's remarks. Jesus is the only way to Heaven. As Christians we can pray for them, that God will bring those other religions closer to him, that they may be brought to Christ. The narrow road is the road to Christ. Only through Christ is there salvation.

    Thank you so much for this. I happened to find a Mass offered from St. Martha’s parish in New Jersey, where the priest added this exact topic in his homily. Almost exactly word for word what Bishop Barron said in his message. I’m so glad you responded in what is a very strong way with Charity. Jesus Himself is so clear on this topic. I pray for those who have knowledge of Christ, yet have chosen other religions. It is veiled Universalism - something I experienced specifically in the Episcopal church in the mid nineties. Please keep speaking Truth.

    A simple way to say this is that there is an ordinary path to salvation, ie, the sacramental life of the Church, and there are extraordinary paths, all of which are through Christ only. It would be imprudent to count upon the extraordinary, so act as if there is only the ordinary, and leave the extraordinary to the Will, Discretion and Providence of God.

    Thank you Dr. Martin🙏😊 I have a question where scripture says in Luke 9: 49-50. Where the disciples tell Jesus about someone who is not part of their group casting out demons in Jesus’s name. The Lord tells them not to stop him and those who are for us cannot be against us. I’m wondering about our Protestant brothers and sisters. Is this passage possibly a reference to them? I’m a former Protestant. I see many of them representing Christ far better than many of my Catholic brethren.

    “Only God knows.” To me, that was the most salient point of this talk, as it was of Bishop Barron’s. We can all get into a bluster over our assessment of the state someone else’s soul, but we’d all do well to remember that despite the treasure we have in the Church’s teachings, they don’t trump God’s will and judgment, which we will not know fully on earth.

  • @tomlaughlin6831
    @tomlaughlin6831 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Dr. Martin - the difference in your approach and Bishop Barron’s appears to be one of emphasis. It seems to me that between the two of you the Holy Spirit is informing us what we need to know. Without erasing the points you’ve made in this video, I want to add a further consideration.
    Your audience (as far as I’m aware) is typically already sympathetic to religion and Catholicism. Much of Bishop Barron’s is as well, but he is also tailored towards the nones. Stressing the desire to save them from damnation can often lead them further away. Why? They are convinced that salvation and damnation (i.e. eternal life) are not real. Therefore damnation seems a threat wielded to coerce certain behavior. Salvation seems as nothing but a selfish activity. So in telling someone who is very suspicious of religion that I want to save your soul from damnation, often the last thing they are hearing you say is I have good news about a God who loves you, is the answer to the deepest passions of your heart, and desires eternal friendship with you.
    Avoid hell and damnation altogether? Of course not. You can show it as reasonable (if there is a God and if that God is love, that implies free will, which implies the possibility of eternally rejecting that love) and point to ‘hell’ on earth … akin to Jesus and the woman at the well ... ‘how’s your current road working out for you? You are thirsty again and again aren’t you?’
    It seems you both agree on what the Church teaches but you emphasize or are seeking to clarify different aspects of it for different audiences. Am I wrong in observing that Jesus used his more explicit warnings on hell in the context of those who already accept a religious framework, and he generally presented a different emphasis to those more considered outsiders?
    Lastly, thank you for the manner in which you've engaged this topic.

    Jesus told St. Faustina: “My soul suffered the most dreadful loathing in the Garden of Olives because of lukewarm souls.....for them, the last hope of salvation is to flee to My mercy.”
    “I know your works; I know that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either cold or hot. So, because you are lukewarm, neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth.” (Rv 3:15-16)
    “Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, then I will enter his house and dine with him, and he with me. I will give the victor the right to sit with me on my throne, as I myself first won the victory and sit with my Father on his throne.” (Rv 3:20-21)

    Dr. Martin, would you think most non-believers (if not all) are inculpably ignorant? For example, how many non-believers actually truly know and reject the real Jesus (and not some caricature of Him formed by bad catechesis, or had some other environmental reason to not believe). It seems if all people were 'properly' evangelized, they would come to believe?
    P.S. great video. I really appreciate your perspectives and approach. God bless!

    Ralph, I agree with you actually completely and anti-climatically, but universal salvation is so pandemic in our local RC churches that my traditional faith makes me like a fish out of water and among a scarce few who still somehow are surviving the drift away from tradition. I'm rather fatigued with having prayed for decades for the clergy to renew tradition and zeal or moral truth to the point of being resigned that it must be God's will to allow the moral indifference among the clergy and laity.

    Thank you, once again. Dr. Martin, for your wonderful clarity on this issue. I wish I'd had this knowledge during my high school teaching days on the subject. Thankfully, I can still use it in my diocesan and parish RCIA work. The only question the kids ever wanted answered was "Do I have to be Catholic to be saved?" The instant you say, "No, but..." you can palpably feel all the light bulbs shut off in their heads. In their minds, all they hear is "I don't need to be Catholic to be saved." Your explanation here really re-kindles the reality of the urgency of being Catholic---which, of course, is ultimately about our relationship with Our Lord (and all that goes with it). Your answers in this careful and fully thought out teaching here gives us the important baseline to turn the light switches back on from "No, but..." to "If you think you're going to be saved without being Catholic, good luck with that. Now, let me tell you why." The three conditions and three final sentences you point out in LG no, 16 really hammer it home. I especially love your line, "We aren't working through salvation in a neutral environment," and in fact, as you state so well, not only is it not spiritually neutral, is a spiritually hostile environment at the center of which is our egotistical self in which we perceive ourselves as God (i.e., the most violated sin is the first commandment) enhanced by the radical effects of Original Sin. "Wide and easy is the road that leads to destruction and MANY there are who are following it. Narrow the path and difficult the way that leads to salvation and FEW there are who find it." "I am the Way, the Truth and the Life, NO ONE comes to the FATHER but through me," not through Buddha, not through self-contemplation, not through the universal brother and sisterhood of believers or any false religion, but through Christ.

    ST. POPE JOHN PAUL II: “The universality of salvation means that it is granted not only to those who explicitly believe in Christ and have entered the church. Since salvation is offered to all, it must be made concretely available to all. But it is clear that today, as in the past, many people do not have an opportunity to come to know or accept the Gospel revelation or enter the Church. The social and cultural conditions in which they live do not permit this, and frequently they have been brought up in other religious traditions. For such people salvation in Christ is accessible by virtue of a grace, which, while having a mysterious relationship to the Church, does not make them formally part of the Church but enlightens them in a way which is accommodated to their spiritual and material situation. This grace comes from Christ; it is the result of his Sacrifice and is communicated by the Holy Spirit. It enables each person to attain salvation through his or her free cooperation.”

    1 Thessalonians 4 King James Version (KJV)
    4 Furthermore then we beseech you, brethren, and exhort you by the Lord Jesus, that as ye have received of us how ye ought to walk and to please God, so ye would abound more and more.
    2 For ye know what commandments we gave you by the Lord Jesus.
    3 For this is the will of God, even your sanctification, that ye should abstain from fornication:
    4 That every one of you should know how to possess his vessel in sanctification and honour;
    5 Not in the lust of concupiscence, even as the Gentiles which know not God:
    6 That no man go beyond and defraud his brother in any matter: because that the Lord is the avenger of all such, as we also have forewarned you and testified.
    7 For God hath not called us unto uncleanness, but unto holiness.
    8 He therefore that despiseth, despiseth not man, but God, who hath also given unto us his holy Spirit.
    9 But as touching brotherly love ye need not that I write unto you: for ye yourselves are taught of God to love one another.
    10 And indeed ye do it toward all the brethren which are in all Macedonia: but we beseech you, brethren, that ye increase more and more;

    Very cool video. It is an illustration of how the "development of doctrine" or the teaching of the deposit of faith ought to work: one proposes a response to a question; another says "yes, but wait what about this?"; a third clarifies, corrects, admonishes and praises all involved for desiring to do God's will with thier own good will. All benefit from the exchange.

    Excellent, of course, Ralph! I would encourage everyone to read the books that Ralph mentions. He discusses the word "saepius," which Austin Flannery translates as "very often" at some length in _Will Many Be Saved_. I think, however, he doesn't go far enough. I'm not the world's greatest Latinist (far from it) but I thought that "saepius" meant "more often," meaning that those who do not explicitly accept Christ are lost more often than they are saved, not simply "very often." That would also agree better with Jesus' own words about the broad and narrow ways.

    Thank you so much for responding to this! You are either saved (have salvation) or you don’t. There is no “fullness of salvation”.

    Thanks so much for your clarity. We need clarity. If we want to be an Olympic athlete...we have to strive to be the best and follow the rules of the sport. Or we won’t make it. I want to be an Olympian of my Catholic faith. I want to see what no eye has seen or hear what no ear has heard. I want to be with our Lord in heaven.

    It is so true of what you said. Under the constant attack by the devils and our tendency to sin, our conscience shouldn’t be trusted. We need explicit help from the faithful like Bishop Robert Barron, you and others.Thank you so much for your sharing. God Blessed !

    i find the interpretation of scripture today waters down or ignores the many warnings Jesus gave to his disciples ..
    kids in school make scripture into their own image especially with the rational of the flavor of the day such as the gender ideology as if it is a revelation from God, and i find very few of the hierarchy correcting misrepresentation of scripture for ones own purposes and agenda as if they try to sell a message and an ideology...

    Thank you, Dr. Martin, for explaining this issue with clarity and faithfulness to the teachings of the Church, citing the Second Vatican Council. It is very nice to hear this explained by someone who doesn't reject the Council, but also who doesn't ignore the teaching of Christ on the narrow way. May God graciously reward you for your precise and kind explanation of what the Church teaches on this issue, I was aided immensely by this. I will be sharing this with Catholic friends that I have been discussing this issue with.

    Thank you for this! I took a lot of flack when I shared Fr. Goring's video as it was seen as an attack of Bishop Barron. I need to read more of your work as I have been trying to understand what went wrong with regard to Vatican II.
    God bless you and thanks again for this very helpful video! You are living proof that a difference of opinion can be dealt with in a decent, loving way!

    Thank you for your comments. Souls are at risk. On these difficult topics, we are doing a disservice to all humanity if we are not clear of what the Church teaches. I love listening to Bishop Barron's sermons and I agree with your concern about people misinterpreting what he said. The Gospels are clear that not all will go to Heaven.... and Hell is real. There is no sugar coating this reality. Thank you for adding clarity to the sermon . God bless.

    Beautifully and thoroughly handled. As a Bishop Barron fan I had to admire his desire for God's greater mercy to be at work, even as I squirmed with his addition of "fullness" to salvation. But your respectful response and more studied analysis of the whole of Lumen Gentium 16 clearly lays out the seemingly impossible possibility of salvation without explicit belief in Christ, and thus the urgent call of all of us to speak truth in love to every neighbor. And, by doing so, we answer what Lumen Gentium says in the following paragraph (17): "Through her (re: The Church) work, whatever good is in the minds and hearts of men, whatever good lies latent in the religious practices and cultures of diverse peoples, is not only saved from destruction but is also cleansed, raised up and perfected unto the glory of God..."
