This makes my mind blow because in Italy is literally illegal to do something like this. You can do an ad where you compare two products (one frome your brand, and the other one from another brand) but if the ad is in any little way misleading, you literally can get sued. Something like this could NEVER pass on an Italian tv channel.
some countries don’t even let you talk about other brands, i think most of latin america worked like that (at least when i was a kid and watched tv), they had to say “compared to the competition” and show a generic no brand product. but this ad is outright lying lmao...
@@impendio Yeah, I understand why. In Italy even if it's not technically illegal to compare two products, no one does it because of the very high risk of being sued, so every ad is very generic and focuses on the product itself rather than the concorrence.
Notice the way they carefully constructed this advertisement. They only compare the devices physical characteristics, so they can argue they are comparing the devices prices based solely on those physical characteristics if push comes to shove. They actually make no claim that the Surface Pro has more processing power, storage, or RAM for the price. The only illusion they give to the Surface Pro’s actual performance as a computer is to say you can “play games on it”. But notice they *don’t* say you can’t play games on the MBP, and they don’t say that you can play games *well* on the Surface. It’s definitely misleading, but absolutely constructed in a way to carefully skirt around a lawsuit. Edit: people seem to think I’m trying to defend the ad or say that it could run in any nation in the world without a lawsuit happening. I am pointing out how sneaky they were with it. That is all.
@@spnvidz3265 And even, you can still be sued. You can use a product from another brand as a reference to show your product capabilities, but you can not feature a product from another brand and drag it down the way they did in this ad. For example in an ad about washing machines, you can use another washing machine (usually ads don't say the name of the other brand) to show that your washing machine is faster than other washing machines IN GENERAL, without any malicious comments to the other brand featured in the ad. But it's absolutely prohibited to just drag the other brand down in an ad. There is a specific European law that states this, I'll find it and copy and paste it in the comments

This was probably true when he stated this. Microsoft didn’t really make hardware before the Surface line. I have a Surface Pro 7 and it’s a great design.
I own Apple products and non-Apple products. But, let me just say: I DON'T WANT CULTURE IN MY PRODUCTS. I just want a decent product at a decent price. That's it.
These intel and Microsoft (companies with bigger market share) adds are telling me that they are scared out of their minds of Apples M1 chip. So I am definitely getting an M1 device
The reactions I've seen from Apple fans tells me that something in these ads has struck a nerve with them and now they're lashing out in this way to try and rationalize their own purchases. I own a Surface Pro and an iPad pro; the surface is the only device suitable for getting real work done. The iPad pro is great for "fun" stuff like garageband and other scaled-up iPhone apps, but Apple tries to advertise it as a laptop replacement, which it just isn't.
@@jonathanbishopmusic don’t know what work you do that makes you think the iPad Pro is useless but I can see you have a lot of bias towards Apple saying the IPad Pro is only useful for garage band and other apps that fall under this category. @@hugorodriguez5521 Well I guess you're entitled to your own opinion but I've never found my iPad pro to be practical for getting any sort of work done; it's designed for and marketed to consumers as a consumption-oriented device. There are a few apps custom-designed to allow businesses to use an ipad (or any other tablet) as a tool to perform a very specific task, but that doesn't make it a productivity device. I could give a bunch of examples but basically it's simply too locked down by the OS to be a viable alternative to a computer. Things as basic as taking notes in OneNote or extending to a second display are either slow and impractical or simply not possible on an iPad pro.
@jo e mmm not really. It’s almost like me explaining my statement is part of this weird process called having a conversation. It’s almost like you talk about a topic and add additional information to your original statement to better explain your reasoning.
The reason why these ads exist is because they can draw in customers that don’t have much knowledge in tech, because they wouldn’t know that the m1 is much much more powerful than an i3, and they see what the ad says, and it works.
Sure, but in doing so, you're cementing Apple's products as the premium brand to beat. And as soon as that person powers up their i3 with 4 gigs of ram and tries to load a game, they're going to realize they got duped.

Long story short, my M1 arrived tomorrow 😁 and I’ve been a strictly PC only user since the late 90’s. The M1’s just offered way more bang for my buck without the hassles that PC’s have.
I first saw these ads and was annoyed. Then their ad with the iPad Pro, I saw the price and was like "wait a minute, there's gotta be something they're not telling me." Quick Google search later and the specs says it all. Gotta love it when they oversell their products.
They seriously think the i3 surface will outperform the M1 lol. I bet even the snapdragons in Android phones are far more powerful than that potato chip.

Something you didn’t mention is that you can get basically everything Microsoft advertised by buying the iPad 8, Apple Pencil, and Logitech keyboard (it even clicks!) for quite a bit less
But even with all of those things you still wouldn't have a device that could replace your laptop. That's something Apple fans and seemingly Apple itself can't quite grasp or understand the significance of, because their concept of a tablet is based on an iPad which isn't a real computer.
@@jonathanbishopmusic Unless you're a developer or using a proprietary software for work, iPadOS can get most of laypeople's things done. Apple is slowly leveraging iPadOS functionality with each update. You'll be surprised how many can survive with 'just' an iPad.

I’m glad they hired a bipoc actor, but wut does a child who maybe plays fortnite /battle royale and def not playing that on a surface product… Such an odd premise for a commercial, they’re def mimicking many other review people on TH-cam, but it’s so cringe !
They used the maxed out price for the iPad and the baseline price for the surface. Microsoft is being so petty! Plus they act like the pen comes with the package but it’s actually sold separately. This is misleading.
What these ads from Microsoft basically tell me is that they are scared of the iPad and MacBook taking away sales from the Surface line. To be fair, Microsoft kind of has the right to be scared. Within the past year, the iPad and MacBooks grew significantly in sales, and partially ate away against Windows’ market share. Part of it was the pandemic boosting sales of computers in general, but also iPads and MacBooks have receive significant improvements over the past year. With iPadOS getting keyboard/mouse support, people are realizing that iPads are good options as computers now. In addition, the introduction of M1 chip, as well as Apple ditching the butterfly keyboard, gave the entry level MacBooks the necessary improvements to become the best overall laptops in the market. Overall, what these ads show is that Apple is doing something right.
Nice video. I think another good example is when Xiaomi AND Samsung pulled out ads making fun of Apple for selling phones without a charger, only to a couple of months later, they all followed protocol. At least from what I heard, in official Xiaomi stores you get to choose, with or without the power adapter, with no extra charge.
The only reason the iPad keyboard is heavier is that it needs to be able to weigh down the iPad itself. This is why the part of your laptop where the keyboard is, is heavier than the display part.
Microsoft is always so cringe.... Whenever they try to appeal to the average person/user it's always so awkard to watch, and whenever they do something like "windows live" or "clippy" , and then this - its just bad
OMGosh I can’t believe the audacity of Microsoft to claim that their Surface even competes with an iPad Pro or a MacBook. Lol, that’s all I can say. I mean, my iPad 9th gen is more powerful than the quad core i7 Surface based on benchmarks and real world tests, let alone the M1. The M1 even beats the CPU on the eight and ten core, 10th gen i9 in the 16” MacBook Pro and 27” iMac.
The MACBOOK is a LAPTOP and NOT a TABLET! SO COMPARE IT TO A LAPTOP (in the same performance range) And the IPAD is a TABLET and NOT a LAPTOP! SO COMPARE IT TO A TABLET (also in the same performance range)
I'm so happy someone finally talked about these. I saw the first ad a while ago and was literally in shock by just how wrong it was. Like trying to compare a mac book pro to a surface is just insane. And then to call it a gaming laptop smh.
I think the problem is Microsoft knows that a ton of people have little to no knowledge of what any of the insides do or any of the other specs and that the main features are price and outside look
They could've mentioned the fact of being able to use full desktop apps in a tablet form factor... Or maybe the keyboard click is really important I dunno
the difference between desktop and "mobile" apps is becoming increasingly smaller, to the point where app availability is rarely a deciding factor. the last holdout is AAA gaming titles, which i think is at a tipping point with the current generation
@@Haldered I think with only a few companys the line is getting blurred, From the top of my head there is still quite a few more specialized apps that Desktop OS's have over Mobile.
@@Moon-lk8uc Very true. I game on Windows. I’m implying that Microsoft is thinking “oh since this insanely low powered device runs Windows it’s going to be suitable for gaming”
@@Moon-lk8uc Well, actually I believe Mac is not suitable for gaming because most games are not compatible with it. MacBooks are getting better with it with M1 although still, a long way to go since Apple Silicone has no dGPU and most likely not have any in the future. ARM architecture does not need one.
the library of big-budget gaming titles on Windows is bigger, yes. But the gap is shrinking and the definition of the gaming market is changing. Apple makes powerful machines every bit as capable of gaming, especially in the lower-mid tier, and more and more big titles are available to it. The fact is, you can do more gaming at a higher end graphic capability on an M1 than an Intel i3. Sure, you can't install the newest AAA title on an iPad, but you can't play it on a Surface Pro either, so whats the point?
Another problem with comparative advertising is, you automatically put yourself in the underdog position trying to catch up with the other person/product/company
It’s interesting how companies mention one another directly in their ads in the US. It’s not really a thing in South Africa. I also think you’re giving your competition free exposure at your cost. If I didn’t know about your competitor, after your ad, now I do and I’m going to start considering them too.
They used the maxed out price for the iPad and the baseline price for the surface. Microsoft is being so petty! Plus they act like the pen comes with the package but it’s actually sold separately. This is misleading.
I have a 64gb surface go and after updates with no apps on it, it says I have 44gb of space to use. Now with the 64gb ipad that my fam has, they have a few games on it, and it still has 60 gb of space.
true, but neither is the m1 devices, neither of them are built for gaming but the fact that the surface is x86 means it might be more compatible, not to mention that macos dropped support for 32bit apps. also if youre calling it an ipad PRO, that means that its for professionals, that youre going to do work on it. ipad os simply isnt built for that. and having only one port if kind of a big downside on a pro device especially if youre doing video work. even my macbook air has two thunderbolt ports.
The advertisements like these are so strange to me because in my mind, the Surface and iPad couldn't possibly be any more different. Both have their strengths and weaknesses, but beyond the basic shape of the device itself and the touch screen, everything is just too different to compare.
Something that always bothers me about these ads is that they focus so much on the comparison that they never explain what makes their product actually good. Let's pretend that every comparison they made was actually valid. Cool, so it's better that the ipad in these few traits... why should I buy it?

@@spnvidz3265 they're still comparing them
@@spnvidz3265 And even, you can still be sued.

Don’t know about you but for me the iPad Pro had become my go to for closing deals and showing clients projects and designs on the go. Now that doesn’t mean it’s the best and only option as thank god the market is starting to catch up and competitors are making their own version to compete with the IPad Pro. Also you get the tool that best suites your needs and compliments your tasks...but it’s a real stretch to claim the IPad Pro is nothing more than a toy all because you prefer the Surface Pro to it. You sound just as bad as these commercials for the surface pro 💀

Overall, what these ads show is that Apple is doing something right.
and you know what they say: NEVER show the other guy how desperate you are

the library of big-budget gaming titles on Windows is bigger, yes.
Sure, you can't install the newest AAA title on an iPad, but you can't play it on a Surface Pro either, so whats the point?

true, but neither is the m1 devices, neither of them are built for gaming but the fact that the surface is x86 means it might be more compatible, not to mention that macos dropped support for 32bit apps. also if youre calling it an ipad PRO, that means that its for professionals, that youre going to do work on it. ipad os simply isnt built for that. and having only one port if kind of a big downside on a pro device especially if youre doing video work. even my macbook air has two thunderbolt ports.

Oh, it clicks? IM SOLD!
those adverts make me wanna buy a Macbook than the surface pro even though I already have one and made this comment with it
Saying "it comes with the pen" is incredibly misleading like wtf? I genuinely thought it included one based on the ad until Luke said otherwise.
3:40 you get an extra port with the Magic Keyboard so it’s not only one port like they said.
I feel sorry for that poor boy in the ad...
why ?
The advertisements like these are so strange to me because in my mind, the Surface and iPad couldn't possibly be any more different. Both have their strengths and weaknesses, but beyond the basic shape of the device itself and the touch screen, everything is just too different to compare.
Something that always bothers me about these ads is that they focus so much on the comparison that they never explain what makes their product actually good. Let's pretend that every comparison they made was actually valid. Cool, so it's better that the ipad in these few traits... why should I buy it?
I think the only sales on these are confused grandmas who’s kid wants a gaming pc
Time for Apple to go back to "I'm a Mac", "I'm a PC" ads? They could be very funny now.
I absolutely hate Microsoft and google ads. Why? Because most of them are in Spanish and I don’t even know what they are saying
I think MS is hedging its bets: keeping Intel smiling on side whilst developing its own Arm based chips.
After having an M1 chip on an iPad pro I have to say this, what is a surface board?.
I don't like touchscreens, so I see that as a negative. Same thing with the removable keyboard on the surface. If I wanted a Tablet. I would buy one.
If Apple made an advert like this they would just have to say “this is Apple” and that’s it done then lost the specs and prices etc
