Maybe in the dry season take some of the many big rocks you have on the homestead and line the banks around the culverts so that the water scours the rock instead of the soil. Remember that you will NEVER be able to STOP water - the best you can do is try to persuade the water to take a less destructive path.
I'm originally from western PA and now live in FL. I love sarsaparilla but it's really hard to find down here. About the only place you can get it ois at a Cracker Barrel restaurant.
Should you consider double culverts (side by side) where your most severe wash-outs occurred? That way the strong water flow might be contained UNDER the road instead of OVER the top of the road, allowing double the flow underneath. Worth considering?
Back in the ‘70s my pap would take us kids to the bar room after a day in the woods teaching us survival skills. He would get a beer and us kids would have sasparillas. He would give us his change so we could play the arcade games until mom picked us up. So we used to be able to get sasparilla down here in south central Pennsylvania...but now that you mention it, I don’t recall seeing sasparilla anymore, but I don’t frequent bar rooms either. Those were good times with Pap...I sure learned a lot from him!
26:09 Al that is the female seed pods on the birch tree that have no matured yet. The male flower in the spring is long and grows on last years growth, while the female flower and pod is short in mid sumner and does not grow long until late summer when the seed ripen. It take 15 years for a birch tree to produce the first seed pods. Birch trees can be tapped like maples and uses to make birch syrup, or the sap an be drank and has a wintergreen flavor. The young seed pods of the birch tree is harvested and used in spirit making, and birch makes a good tea. There was no need to cut the birch down when a birch tree is heavy laden with seed pods they weep, but it does not harm the tree. Also the bark of the yellow birch is distilled to make Oil of wintergreen, and birch wood is used to make toothpicks.

Here in CT we have a local soda bottling company that makes Birch Beer. It is clear like ginger ale or seltzer but with a distinctive birch smell and flavor.
Good afternoon Lumanh family from a getting hotter Minnesota. Good afternoon viewers. I'm glad you fixed the flail mower and tilted it more to cut the grass by the side of the road. It does look very soggy there and the fog is low over your land. That is tough that you lost 8 more knives. I'm glad you're getting ready to repair the culvert. I enjoyed your drone shots of the mowing. Brutus is huge! I'm so glad you listened to your viewers that let you know that tilting it back in the roller was the way to get your knives from being broken so bad. This way you're not scalping the ground too! I'm glad the baby bird wildlife is bigger now so cutting the grass shouldn't make them more vulnerable to predators. I'm glad you replaced the bolt that was too small on the roller end. I don't have an ISP right now so I have to watch your channel at the library. Your flail mower sure looks like it is working well. That place you mowed to sure washed out. I'm glad the culvert is still there it just needs more dirt on top. Thanks to that person that sent the email to Al to tell him to make the flail mower ride on the roller! Good that you got the yellow birch taken care of with the De Walt chainsaw. Thanks for this video Lumnah family! I don't think I've had Sarsaparilla so I can't say which one I prefer. I hope there isn't much more to repair up above!
Thanks to the guy who sent you the email about the flail mower's adjustment. All that extra vibration couldn't be good for any part of the drive train. Those cutter pieces flying off the roller is probably not safe. One of those cutters could possibly fly off and break the tractor's glass door. 😝
The mower roller evens out the terrain and lifts the mower over roots and rocks - instead of only riding on the skids at each end which has permitted the mower to follow all the dips and bumps...and "scalping" the rocks, roots and high bits and damaging the flails... Good it was pointed out to you. Regards from Gothenburg, Sweden
Yes, I think it seems to be doin g a better job, and less broken parts. It certainly is nice when you receive kind, useful advice and things work better!. we are here to assist our neighbours, not to run them into the mud!
Fly the drone up the road to check on needed repairs. Good to have people who know things, to get your adjustments just right. Looks good! I hope you don't have to much more damage from the flood.
Oh boy, this brings back memories from my father. He was a proud Yankee. Loved Sarssaparilla! I also love birch beer and we buy it from a CT company Foxon Park and of course the debate about clear or dark birch beer. ❤
I enjoyed the video. I like any project with the TYM tractor and being out in the woods. I think a lot of viewers don't realize how much time it take to maintain your property... I had (2) AG1 ads on this video. 🥰 It's amazing how much Brutus has grown. ❣️🤗
Both beverages are named after the distinct differences in ingredients from when they were first made. Sarsaparilla was made from the Sarsaparilla vine, while Root Beer is made from the sassafras tree's roots. These days, Root Beer recipes do not include sassafras as the plant has been found to cause serious health issues.
You can get hydraulic restrictors to reduce the sudden / jerky movement from your remotes. I added the restrictors to my flail mower and the control was 100 percent better. I got mine from TSC.
28:05 Al, Sarsaparilla was made from the Sarsaparilla vine, while Root Beer, roots of the sassafras tree. Yellow Birch is what old timers used to make Birch Beer from the fermented sap and bark. Birch beer has a wintergreen flavor to it.
This was another fun video! I loved watching you work with the drone following you. It reminded me of when I was a little girl and me and my brother would make roads in the dirt with rocks which were also our trucks and cars and sticks were built into buildings! Thank you!
The adj on the roller you made makes sense. It seemed like you were loosing a lot of the blades which was odd. So glad you took the advice of your viewers. Kind of them to make the suggestions
The nice thing about mowing is that the more you do it, the more you clear out the rough spots and the smoother it gets. Working neglected areas is hard on machines but over time it gets better. Yes it should ride on the roller, but those skids are a minimum setting. You can still ride higher if you wish by taking a little on the hydraulics. Lower it down and then ease gently up to take some especially where you want taller grass in the pastures.
Birch beer. a favorite of my childhood. not as sweet as root beer with lots of flavor. hard to find on the west coast but visiting my grandma near Philly as a kid it was a summertime favorite.
I was told by my Grandmother, (I'm in my 70's now I remember was able to buy Sassafras bark & root in almost every grocery store). Was stopped because it was a diuretic. Sassperilla was made from Birch trees, Rootbeer was made from Sassafras tree root. I've drank & liked both. Old western movies used to refer to drinking a Sassperilla for a non alcoholic drink in a saloon.
We bought a flail mower for our farm recently. I haven’t used it yet but I’ll remember to adjust it so it’s riding on the roller after watching this video.
I prefer water kefir or kombucha for fizzy drinks. I drink hot coffee, iced tea, and mostly water with a splash of unsweetened cranberry juice and either Redmond Re-Lyte or Ultima Replenisher both in Pina Colada.
Sarsaparilla is known for having a more bitter flavor, which led to the creation of root beer for a more sweet and enhanced flavor. When i was a kid my dad would take us to the woods to dig up the roots to make tea. I grew up between southern michigan and central indiana
It might be a good idea to take some of the big rocks you dug out and use them to make headwalls on the inlet and outlet ends of the culverts your repairing. Keep up the excellent work.
I’ve tried sasparilla, root beer, and birch beer, which you can find in three colors (white, brown, and blue) here in Pennsylvania. My favorite changes, but I was so excited to try sasparilla back when I was a kid! It’s been almost fifty years and I still remember.
Hi Al I'm 62 and live in Australia. Sarsaparilla has definitely been my drink of choice since early childhood.. Just❤❤❤ it. Sarsaparilla with ice cream floater is called a Sarsaparilla Spider. Enjoying your show. Have a great day.
I'm in the UK and can remember first hearing about sarsaparilla in the movie Calamity Jane lol. I've never tasted it, and the 'Root Beer' we have over here is probably different from what you guys have over there! I hope you can get your 2 conduits sorted and filled and the road back soon and that you don't find anything too horrendous further up! Love to the whole fam, human and fluffy/hairy!*! ❤
I have a flail mower as well for my orchard. Love the performance on not only the cut and mulch as you discussed but the gopher problem I have also benefits from flail mower over the rotary mower I've used in the past. Does a bit of leveling if above ground mounds. Your rockier area is likely to eat hammers but to get the clean paths on your large property it is fairly quick and has benefits at scale that rotary doesn't have. The saplings you can mow would eat rotary blades much faster. Find lift of PTO for flail allows crawling under where deck of rotary doesn't allow that height for maintenance. Look forward to seeing you flail new areas and trails as you get the main areas under better control. You've made an incredible amount of progress since you bought. Ken's early departure also appeared to help as that barn has changed husbandry considerably for you guys. All the best to taming more of your 500 acres.
Yes, I have had a sasparilla drink once. I was at The Bucket of Blood Saloon in Carson City Nevada many many years ago. I thought it was tasty, but a little different from root beer that I have loved all my life. Of course that depends on the brand, some are better than others.
There is a feature on your tractor that you may be overlooking. The three point system on modern tractors includes a “position” setting which controls the carrying height on mounted implements. When you start out, you let the 3 point arms go to their lowest setting which means your mower is sitting with its full weight on either the skids or on the roller. All the tractor then does is drag the mower forward. By adjusting the position control such that the three point is carrying a bit of the weight and adjusting the top link so the roller carry’s the back of the mower, you won’t be running the hammers directly over every rock and high spot. You are definitely going through an above average number of blades and some further fine tuning should help with that. Good luck with road repairs. 🥸👍👀👋❤️❤️❤️✅
Hello, tks for video. Mowing looks good. I like this also .Miss seeing all the animals...lol. Will see and hear you on podcast tomorrow. Be safe. Much love to ya....
Hello Al find yourself a Sassafras tree and dig out a few sassafras roots and wash them Off Real good and then cut up the Roots Real small and then Boil the foots and when your Roots starts looking like the color of Tea and then strain out your liquid into a container and sweeten it to your taste and chill in your Refrigerator until it's very Cold and then it's ready to Drink and it's a very Delicious and very Healthy Drink and I know that you Al and your wife Gena will really enjoy your Sassafras tea !
Good morning family, A little known fact Sarsaparilla was made from the Sarsaparilla vine, while Root Beer, roots of the sassafras tree. also Safrole was found to contribute to liver cancer in rats when given in high doses. I stop't drinking soda in my early 30's but when i did i like Root beer more. From a girl in originally Born n raised in New England Mass but moved to North Wisconsin 19 yrs ago. God bless stay safe n well. 😊
Al I really think you should replace both colverts by looking at the condition of the one that washed away. I bet they were installed at the same time.
Good Morning Al., Glad all of you are doing well. The internet says to your question:: Both beverages are named after their distinct differences in ingredients when they were first made. Sarsaparilla was made from the Sarsaparilla vine, while Root Beer, roots of the sassafras tree. These days, Root Beer recipes do not include sassafras as the plant has been found to cause serious health issues. Wow I didn’t realize Linda from Ct 🙏🙏🙏
Good morning! Al, perhaps the way you install the bolt and nut matter because of the way it rotates? Each time it’s engaged it’s torquing those bolts and nuts, either that or maybe nylon lock nuts would work better because they might loosen some, then the lock nut will keep it from being lost this much. Hope this helps, have a wonderful day everyone!
Losing that many as quickly as he does, whatever he is using is not working. A locknut and loctite should greatly increase the residence time if each hammer in the mower.
I sometimes have a sarsaparilla soda when we visit the old Gold Rush towns in Northern California but I prefer A&W Root Beer. It was a popular drink back in the Gold Rush days. BTW, the road looks great.
We have Sassafras trees here in the north east which real root beer is made from it's roots . Glad your getting all the damage cleaned up and glad you got hte flail mover adjusted. All looking good!! Stay blessed all!!
Set your three point handle stop so hitch doesn’t go completely down when you lower the mower. Carry the front with tractor hitch and let roller carry the rear. Skid shoes are not to run on ground all the time. They are to help lift over high spots.
Were you aware of how close Brutus was to your vehicle in the beginning of this video? He didn't seem to move away when you started the motor -- but your edit didn't show what happened. When you first named him, I wasn't sure whether I liked the name, but as I see him today -- it is a perfect fit!!
a wise farmer reads his equipment owners manuals ! first time I ever saw anybody use a prybar/wrench to adjust the top link - take the load of it by your 3pt. contol and you can turn it by those handles - who knew . enjoyed the video thanks
You might want to consider buying a government surplus or used 5 ton dump truck….you have plenty of rocks and good dirt that you can haul. You got the mini and tractor and can fix things at no cost other than fuel. Dump trucks are handy around the homestead / farm. Just a thought…
I have made sarsaparilla syrup to make my own with sparkling water, and it is really good, it is the original formula for root beer, but they removed the sassafras root from the formulation because there was a certain portion of the population who would have bleeding and clotting issues if they drank too much sarsaparilla. Because sassafras has a mild blood thinning and anticoagulant effect
Try using self locking nuts with nylon inserts or loc-tite, or both. Threadlocker Blue 242 and Red 271, Thread lock Medium and Strong Strength Lock Tight for Nuts, Bolts, Fasteners, and Metals to Prevent Loosening and Corrosion.
On the mower/ topper, try moving the roller into the other hole, then remove the top link and set your hydraulic arms to a hight where the mower is at the right cut hight, there should be a stop on the control so you can return to this hight after lifting, then put the top link on into the slotted hole above where you have it now, set the length so the pin is in the center of the slot, this will follow the contoures of the ground much better and save you lots of damaged flails.
Hey Mr lumnah acres you welcome back 🙏 😀 😊 😉 and stay of health care 😊

Yup. I was just going to say this. The culverts with the large rocks seem to have held up good. If he uses just fill, it will wash away quickly
I'm originally from western PA and now live in FL. I love sarsaparilla but it's really hard to find down here. About the only place you can get it ois at a Cracker Barrel restaurant.
@@TheMadManPlace yes agree, lining up the many available rocks in the property will be great protection

Enjoyed the video. Thanks for sharing
Al, if you would use self- locking nuts, it would help from loseing everything when the regular nut and bold come off.
Good Morning Al.,
Glad all of you are doing well.
The internet says to your question::
Both beverages are named after their distinct differences in ingredients when they were first made. Sarsaparilla was made from the Sarsaparilla vine, while Root Beer, roots of the sassafras tree. These days, Root Beer recipes do not include sassafras as the plant has been found to cause serious health issues.
Wow
I didn’t realize

Good morning! Al, perhaps the way you install the bolt and nut matter because of the way it rotates? Each time it’s engaged it’s torquing those bolts and nuts, either that or maybe nylon lock nuts would work better because they might loosen some, then the lock nut will keep it from being lost this much. Hope this helps, have a wonderful day everyone!
I think he's using locking nuts already 😊👍🇺🇸🇦🇺
@@col2560 so hard to tell in video!
Losing that many as quickly as he does, whatever he is using is not working. A locknut and loctite should greatly increase the residence time if each hammer in the mower.
Punch nuts are what you should be using, that's what we used.
@@denslatt Maybe a lock washer as well .
I sometimes have a sarsaparilla soda when we visit the old Gold Rush towns in Northern California but I prefer A&W Root Beer. It was a popular drink back in the Gold Rush days. BTW, the road looks great.
Good Morning from waterlogged Virginia Beach. I am a root beer man! I am also a root beer float man! Nice to see the mower tuned in and mowing well!
Good morning Al, Gina, Olivia and all the Lumnah friends and extended family. Wishing everyone a great week
Howdy there, Robert! Thanks and hope you're having a great week too!
Morning Al and Family we need the rain here in PA. send some Our way. God Bless
My husband's dad came from back east and would always bring saspirilla and birch beer back. Ernie loved it. I like both better than root beer.

I loved your "Soggier than a bowl of cereal left on a counter overnight" comment!
Good morning Al and Gina, have a nice day
Good morning Lumnah acres from the Winze family in Hutchinson Kansas
On the mower/ topper, try moving the roller into the other hole, then remove the top link and set your hydraulic arms to a hight where the mower is at the right cut hight, there should be a stop on the control so you can return to this hight after lifting, then put the top link on into the slotted hole above where you have it now, set the length so the pin is in the center of the slot, this will follow the contoures of the ground much better and save you lots of damaged flails.
Al, don’t drop the 3point hitch so far. You will wear out that roller. It’s meant to just hit or bounce off high spots. Learned this the hard way!
