Al, when you hooked up the water lines from the pump in the water bucket, they were empty of water so you will introduce AIR into the system. if you haven't added air bleeder to your system then you should. also think about adding in the back up pump now into the plumbing so that in the event of the original pump fails, all you have to do is open some valves and close others to isolate the failed pump and be back in operation in minutes to keep the heat flowing. then work on replacing/repairing the failed pump in a warm and cozy home. jim in central florida

Next track replacement power wash it first, and lay ply wood underneath so the track will slide in easier . Don't forget, now is the time to replace every machine diesel fuel filters, clean water traps, add a bottle of anti-fungi fuel additive Before freezing temps arrive. Change to winter weight motor oils. Winterize now. 👍
Al, I think you need to take a page out of Mike (Outdoors with the Morgans) Morgan's book and perform preventive maintenance on your machines more often, specifically, by using a power washer frequently to prevent the build-up of the sort of crusty crud that we saw in that grease chamber. I am so glad you got that track and the hot water circulator fixed. Is the radiant heat in the shop in use yet?

@@StoneKathryn It's been decades since they used an old fashion expansion tank. They started being replaced by a bladder style tank in the mid 60s. The bladder style tank is similar to the newer well tanks where the air is separated into a bladder and that's a fixed mount, based on the size of the tank. Above that tank is a cast iron assembly (air scoop) with some internal fins / baffles that channels air to the top, then into another assembly called an auto-vent. This vent has a chamber with a float and when the air inside reaches a certain level it's allowed to escape, then seal again. Installation of this air scoop must include a straight run of pipe, about 2-3 feet or longer, which cuts down the turbulence and creates a laminar flow, which allows the bubbles to rise and get to the vent. If you don't have that straight run the air gets mixed back into the water and keeps circulating, which causes that sound of running water in the pipes. (Al has many elbows in that area) Air in the pipes can also cause cavitation, which makes the circulator noisy plus shortens it's life. If you have ever noticed a boat engine propeller making the water foam because it's up a bit high, that's what cavitation looks like. BTW, low system pressure can also cause cavitation because the inlet pressure drops enough to pull air out of the water. All water has some air in it. Think of a high school experiment where they put a glass of water in a vacuum chamber and you watch it bubble at room temp. Class dismissed!
@@StoneKathryn If heating equipment trips your trigger, might I suggest a book by Dan Holeran (sp?) on hydronic heating. It's considered the bible for the industry for around the last 40 years now. It's not overly technical and a fairly light read for those with the right mindset. It covers the basics, the history, and even throws in a few amusing stories along the way. He's good at explaining why things don't work. I actually attended a short seminar where he was the speaker.
Hey Al! How do you fill your heat system? You should get yourself an automatic boiler fill valve with back flow preventer combo (eg. Watts 911 combo) You won't need the pump and bucket, and avoid future airbounding.

My husband is a Central Boiler dealer. Every year before heating starts he checks for air in the lines. We don't run our boiler except in heating season. Most of the time, there is no air. Always check your water level in the boiler as well. We flush our boiler every two years and refill with new water and add sludge protector. I assume you are too. Sometimes the pumps fail. We have had our new gasification boiler installed for 4 years now and have never had to replace a pump yet. Always have a couple extra on hand for our own use. He does replace pumps for customers from time to time. We love our radiant heat and have had an outdoor boiler for over 25 years. Just got the big new one 4 years ago.

Hello from Michigan. I have worked on a pump like that. On the back is a vent you can open to get the air out of the pump. The water cools the pump.

The pump is a Grundfos. You can bleed the system right at the pump using a flat-bladed screwdriver.

Always check your water level in the boiler as well. We flush our boiler every two years and refill with new water and add sludge protector. I assume you are too. Sometimes the pumps fail. We have had our new gasification boiler installed for 4 years now and have never had to replace a pump yet. Always have a couple extra on hand for our own use. He does replace pumps for customers from time to time. We love our radiant heat and have had an outdoor boiler for over 25 years. Just got the big new one 4 years ago.

Al!!! You can install a head pressure bypass valve and gauge for summer use. That way the hx won’t dry and the circulating pump won’t cavitate. 😎👍
