Hey Tim I've been doing ESL teaching for over 4 years. Two years in person teaching in Korea. And I've been doing online ESL teaching for just about 2 years. It has been quite the journey. I followed a similar path as you talked about. 1.5 years with Open English while building up my own independent students for about a year on Preply. Now I just have my own independent students. It is a grind but really rewarding once things pick up steam. Great advice! You seem like a very nice person.
Hello, I’m Canadian and have been teaching ESL in Japan for 12 years now. I wish to transition to online, remote teaching and editing/proofreading freelance work. How would you recommend starting out and finding my own students?
So thankful for you, Tim! Your guidance and humbleness is just wonderful to not just me, but SO many others. I continued to so enjoy your channel. Am so appreciative of your knowledge and guidance for it is a process. :)
Is there anyone who would like to teach English to Japanese students online? It does not matter if you are native or non-native English speaker. No need for a degree or any kind of certificate. All lessons are prepared in advance. For more info, reply to this comment.
Very informative thanks for posting. Most teachers, including myself, spend lots of time marketing on the major platforms to attract more students. The hard truth is it's a rollercoaster ride each month. Going solo is the sensible path.
It's so hard, I lack knowledge, resources, I don't know how to do ESL on my own. You suggested a company on another video, I applied but nothing. Right now I'm signed up to VIPlearn, Native, Accent but building something takes too long. Working full time for AMEX but I hate it, I feel hopeless. I've been doing ESL online for 5 years, VIPKID, MagicEars, BlingABC. I will keep listening to you..,.
Thank you Tim for sharing! Why did you choose Bangkok? Also, I am looking forward to travelling and teaching as a retiree in my 60s. But I heard that Korea does not hire or allow seniors to teach there in person. Is this true?
Honestly, I had to leave KL Malaysia for visa reasons and chose Thailand because at that time in the pandemic it was the easiest country in SE asia to get into! Now I really love it here. Not sure about Korea, but it's possible.
I am South African. I do not think my accent is popular therefore I think going solo is a waste of time. I am currently working for a company, but I also see that many companies do not hire South Africans these days, therefore I would be reluctant to go solo. Of course if I was North American or British then I would consider going solo.
@@onlineteacherdude1284 thanks for your opinion. I am currently registered for a business tefl. After that I may consider your course. I can only manage one course at a time. I study and teach but both part-time.
Hey! I think your best option is Stripe invoicing or integrating Stripe on your website with a checkout form or using a checkout form from Stripe. They are 2.9%. Paypal is much higher at around 5%. There would be others but you could ask your students how they can pay you and go from there.
Hey, thanks for the question. You will never regret investing in yourself. I make $50 / hour teaching my own students - so in financial terms it will be paid back fast if you are teaching at that rate. You shouldn't signup if you don't know if it's for you....my sales page makes it really clear who its for so you will know if its for you....that's my hope! However, the course is full now and the doors are closed do it but you can join the waitlist.
@@JOAJOA my income solely from online teaching has never been $65k - that would be nice though! I think you're referring to a video I did on the totality of my income for that year from various sources in my business. Just because I have shared what I make from online work in the past doesn't require me to share all the time. Some things are better left private and I choose not to talk about my entire income right now. I charge 45-50 / hour for classes now and I work around 10 hours / week. i also do a lot of other online projects that bring in income as well.
@@onlineteacherdude1284 the 65k still is income. Considering you’re in Thailand and working less, fair to assume you’re probably not making that 65k. You’re right you don’t have to share but it is inspiring to me at least and many to see videos like that.
@@JOAJOA I wouldn't say I am working less. I am teaching a little less but teaching is not my only income :) I still work very hard. Living in Thailand has nothing to do with my income. Thanks for your comments.

Hi Tim, any tips on how to access Chinese and Non-Chinese social media. I tried looking for student groups on Facebook but couldn't really find any.
Hi, I would suggest joining Xiaohongshu for Teachers Fbook group - start there!

Was hoping you did name the companies that you would recommend....
Quite difficult too since I don't really know who is hiring anymore. Maybe Cambly?

Don't let your accent deter you - lots of SA teachers are going solo, no issues there!

Hey teacher how much is your income from online teaching?
My income is a bit person but I charge $45- $50 / hour for teaching students.
