Having spoken with an organ builder who has tuned a Cavaille-Coll organ, and has included Basson-et-Hautbois in his own organs, I learned that Cavaillé-Coll quite literally built a Basson (in terms of the shallot/tongue and resonator scales) in the bass (below middle C) and an Hautbois from middle C up. Thank you for pointing out in the Récit at middle C where we can hear the difference in voicing at that exchange!

A wonderful demonstration of an articulately recorded instrument and an insightful view of how to configure the instrument. I can see the 'TH-cam' golden button in the mid to distant future, and it will be well deserved when it comes.

Well that was fun… my wife is singing at one of London’s German-speaking churches at the moment, and happened to have a copy of the “Evangelisches Gesangbuch” lying around, so I gave myself a full authentic experience at the end there! Wasn’t sure which verses to choose though, they all seemed to be in German.

17:18 From what I understand, the 1 foot stop was actually an important part of Cavaillé-Coll's medium and larger sized instruments. It served as a substitute for a mixture as in the 1868 incarnation of the Ste. Trinité organ, or a reinforcement of the cornet décomposé as at St. Sulpice. Cavaillé-Coll even put two 1 foot stops at Notre-Dame-de-Paris! In his later years, he included it in the Carillon stop which can be found at Caen, St. Sernin, and St. Ouen (where you might argue it provides that organ's most distinctive sound). Either way, the 1 foot rank was an important part of the Cavaillé-Coll tutti.

Yes, please do a video on your editing process. I've been using Resolve for a few years. I just upgraded to the full/paid version 17. You can get it for $295 with the key. If you shop around you can get it with the key AND speed editing console also for $295. I highly recommend the speed editor if only for the jog wheel.
Heatwave season indeed! I was just in Frankfurt for work about week ago and although not quite as intense as Houston, surprisingly warm! Will be in Hunsrück area all next week so hopefully a bit cooler up there! Hoping to be able to go to a service while I'm there to catch some good organ playing, and maybe talk them into letting me play a bit!
As a french, i prefer to hear this organ well tuned and not detuned ! Dont't forget that in france, before a pipe organ concert, we are always doing a tuning setting on the instrument !

Check out my Hauptwerk Organ Playlist - I’ve Details of everything there, from unboxing it all to the final finish at the organ builder’s! It’s mainly a self-made affair - the bench was a €1 special from eBay, the Pedalboard was a gift, the components were all provided by a supplier in the Netherlands and the casework was completed by a German organ builder friend. The table is, believe it or not, from ikea!

Now I understand a little bit how the complicated registration options on the St. Sulpice organ work, although I had the feeling that it had even a few more "tricks", so you could set up a registration beforehand, and then activate it with a foot switch... Still, I have a nice memory having been able to play that "monster" once 😁. Funny how they use the "Sonnette" register for tremulant, I thought that was the bell for the calcants, to start pumping...
Yep - the registration system at St Sulpice has its own Barker Lever action - a very ingenious system for its time. It's actually a lot easier to play and understand than you think! I've only played it the once - 20 years ago - but it was truly wonderful to try it out - such an original, historic instrument. I hope to get it reviewed on the channel one day!

About that hymn you played at the end; I've always known and played a version where the final line is repeated and is played slightly different. Is there any historical reason as to why it would have changed? The syllables in English don't seem to be any different than what it would be in German, so I'm curious to know. Very wonderful arrangement of the hymn and thank you for showing us this wonderful instrument!
How do organ manufacturers decide what to name the manuals? I always thought that they were named by the order from bottom to top. Thanks, and I do like your videos.
42:51 - Alas, as you may have learnt since this video was posted, the récit has artificial tremulant only-the real tremulant wasn't working when Grabowski was recording. It's a huge shame for the voix humaine, I agree. I love the tremulant on the positif, though, which was sampled acoustically.

Your organ would need a midi in/out socket and your computer has to have an input available. Most of the organists seem to use a desktop style computer. Check the requirements before buying any gear.
Finally, the Great Organ of the Nancy Cathedral will be restored to the state of 1861, as it would have been when A.C.C. finished his re-build! I am assuming its sound will bear some resemblance to that of the St. Sulpice organ, as both those organs retain some classical characteristics and A.C.C. worked on them at the same time
You are lucky - I unplug my Hauptwerk organ and computer if there is a chance of lightening - a direct hit would potentially fry you equipment. OUCH. Thank you Fraser this was wonderful - my envy level high. Maybe some day there will be a sale and can afford this beautiful set.
@@FraserGartshore -- I am a bit of an electronics guy,. -- Yes surge protectors are great but they are not so good at a direct strike on your incoming power lines. Such a strike could blow light and plug socks right out of the wall, -- absolutely love your work maestro. Thanks again.
I agree with the other Joe . As a rule I unplug my organ and computer when I'm not using them. And unplugging means physically removing the plug from the wall, not a switched power strip. Remember that lightning can jump thousands of feet so the small gap of a switch means nothing. Surge protectors are great, when they work. At high enough voltages I wouldn't bet my organ on one.
@@fjbrady neither do I - I even wish I could disconnect the speakers too - but that would require me to remove the back of the Rodgers 760 to do it. In fact I got this wonderful instrument from a church for FREE because it was struck twice and the insurance company who fixed it once at a cost of 5K and refused to do it a second time. Yes _ they never unplugged the instrument.

[I'm thinking there is a low frequency roll-off via You Tube at say ~ 120Hz] I've checked this about 3 times - Listening on Sony Xperia phone 'blue toothed' to a stereo radio - No oomph: the sound is there if a bit breathy, but little in scale or depth... Not 'a nice big rumbly sound'? - Which might be most people's experience on tinny speakers etc However back in my office through the Class A Amp and Linn Kabers there's more breadth an definition - but not earth movingly impressive? [32' machine gun understood at C0 16.35 Hz - also Bosendorfer Imperial]

Question. The Nancy organs appears to have 58 notes on each manual. Fraser's manuals have 61 notes. Does the Nancy sample set carry all the way to the highest C (note 61)?

@@FraserGartshore let's be clear, I don't want to be considered as a person who is just critical to everything, I do like sample sets like Prytanée, Dudelange, Nijkerk, and some others... but this one sounds like he sampled it and he did a really good job and after sampling it, he resampled it from an old speaker. I'm really convinced that the original samples (the recordings of the pipes were good) but I also don't know what he did during the mixing and de-noising process. I do love symphonic and modern music, I suggest you buy Dudelange, that one sounds like a real organ! Especially if you have a good audio card and quality headphones
Affected? Hardly. It’s the way I talk. I’ve been doing it all my life. It’s what one calls an accent. A mixture of where one was born, how one was educated and how one was brought up to speak. It was. The tremulant for Positif was added later.

The original organ only goes to top F (54 notes). The sample set is extended to top C.

@@FraserGartshore let's be clear, I don't want to be considered as a person who is just critical to everything, I do like sample sets like Prytanée, Dudelange, Nijkerk, and some others... but this one sounds like he sampled it and he did a really good job and after sampling it, he resampled it from an old speaker. I'm really convinced that the original samples (the recordings of the pipes were good) but I also don't know what he did during the mixing and de-noising process. I do love symphonic and modern music, I suggest you buy Dudelange, that one sounds like a real organ! Especially if you have a good audio card and quality headphones

Affected? Hardly. It’s the way I talk. I’ve been doing it all my life. It’s what one calls an accent. A mixture of where one was born, how one was educated and how one was brought up to speak. You too will speak with an accent. The politically correct bunch will call that diversity. I call it nature. Wouldn’t the world be an awfully boring place if we all sounded the same?
